CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.
In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.
In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.
Something felt off about this installment. On my notes I wrote that the artwork is a bit different and was questioning whether this was the same group that did the previous volumes. I didn't bother to check so we can go with - same group, Victor's just seeing things.
I enjoy the series and the dynamic between all the players but I feel that this is getting a little formulaic. The characters are being developed and the world growing but every issue seems the same: Watanuki volunteers or is volunteered for an assignment, find himself in trouble, gets out of trouble, learns a valuable lesson all the while pining for Himawari, making lunch for Doumeki and handling his chores.
Last gripe, this story seemed shorter than the previous ones.
The story is good so I still recommend, especially if you're into Japanese ghosts.
This volume prominently features the pipe fox spirit. Yay!
The situation with Watanuki's eye was resolved in an interesting and unexpected (to me) way. Sorry, Watanuki, it really doesn't seem like Himawari is the one you have a "hitsuzen" type connection with...
This is quickly becoming a favorite CLAMP series. I feel that lot of their earlier work lacks warmth, but this one is cozy, along with having a fun and respectful take on Japanese mythology and the occult. And--as always for CLAMP--beautiful art.
The story line about the eye continues with Watanuki running into a new evil spirit who teaches him something about himself and about thinking about the people in our lives who love us.
With that finally done, Yuko and Watanuki go out appliance shopping and then have a contest making snow creatures.
(01/09/2021) This volume continues from the previous one, with Watanuki missing his eye, and this time the Zashiki Warashi tries to help Watanuki but is kidnapped by the Jorogumo.
I really, really loved the philosophy here. Like, the idea that sacrifice is a terrible thing to do to others. The devaluing of yourself necessary is not good, and is hurting those who care about you. I agree 100% and I think it was shown through this story SO well. Great job CLAMP.
Every human heart is truly chained by love.
Also i loved Doneki giving half his eye to Watanuki. It has plot implications, but mostly I'm a sucker for THE BOND like when the said they can share the burden together? That's my catnip.
The short stories with the Raiju and the snow were a nice break after the dramatic arc we had. Cute and funny.

Bon manga.
xxxHolic is not the type of manga that I would usually pick up - somehow, stories about stores with special services have never really caught my interests. As it happens to be a CLAMP manga which is heavily interwoven with Tsubasa and also has ties to Blood C, I knew I'd at the very least have to give it a chance. The good thing is, apart from the ending, it's a pretty neat manga series.
Watanuki has always attracted ghosts and spirits and he wishes they would just go away. Fate leads him to Yuko's wish-granting shop, but wishes don't come for free. In order for Watanuki's wish to be granted, he must work in the store and becomes involved in all manners of the supernatural.
The art is easily recognisable as CLAMP's, yet it is different. Everything is in black and whites with no greyscales and the characters' eyes are rather empty looking, even the covers are anything but vibrant. But this is actually very well suited for the atmosphere of this series. I only wish that, similar to Tsubasa, the characters' limbs weren't so unnaturally long.
What I first thought to be a rather bland set of characters soon turned out to be a much deeper and very likeable bunch. It's odd, I was against every character from the start and I can't even put my finger on when it changed, but I ended up loving them all. I must confess, I preferred the first three-quarters of the story more - Watanuki becomes a more serious character after certain events and I just prefered him the way he was before. That being said, I can understand how and why he changed.
Although there is an underlying story that is interlaced with Tsubasa, the rest of the series is very much episodic. The different episodes all revolve around legends and myths and it's very interesting to read about them. Not only are the origins explained, but given the modern setting of this series, they are always shown with a contemporary sample. I am only guessing here, but I feel as though having visited Japan and recognising various elements increased my enjoyment of this series as it really is very heavy on Japanese-lore. This holds particularly true about the Jorougumo chapters - there's just something very unsettling about these joro spiders.
The story can be a little slow at times but it generally has good pacing. It's a nice balance between humour, horror and a bit of moral lecturing - in a good way. Unfortunately, as is often the case, the ending isn't exactly satisfying. In fact, it's not that much of an ending at all; would I not know that this series is complete with 19 volumes, I'd think there is more to come. Thanks to its episodic nature, this series can in a sense conclude at any time it wants to. Yet the underlying story is left hanging in the air and there's nothing in terms of closure. CLAMP has started a sequel (which is one of their many works on hiatus - surprise!) which may or may not remedy this issue at some point, but for that, one will need to wait for the sequel to conclude. Otherwise, there are a few glimpses of Watanuki in Blood C which I feel not that many people know of - have a look if you care to see more of what happened to Watanuki post xxxHolic!
Watanuki’s lost eye attracts some sinster interest from supernatural denizens of the occult world. The Zashiki-Warashi gets captured by one of those denizens, trying to get Watanuki’s eye back. It’s up to Watanuki and the pipe fox spirit, using the tools provided by Yuko and the Tengu to rescue the Zashiki-Warashi, while it’s up to Dômeki to do something about Watanuki’s lost eye.
One of the most interesting characters yet appeared in this volume, offering truths unacceptable to most people. The Jorô-Gumo, the matron of spiders tormented both Watanuki and Zashiki-Warashi with a smile on her face, all the while calling Watanuki cute. She reminded me of Seishiro in Tokyo Babylon and X/1999 in her deadly, yet amiable manner. It was quite intriguing to have a character such as she appear as opposed to the balanced neutrality which Yûko represents throughout the series. Watanuki’s confrontation with the spider matron as she threatens the Zashiki-Warashi are some of the most intense scenes we’ve had in this series, providing supernatual and physical action, along with emotional turmoil. Dômeki’s decision and the consequences of his action intensified the bond between himself and Watanuki in a way I’ll be interested to see play out. The other stories weren’t quite as gripping as the first, but Dômeki getting to see the fireworks with Watanuki even far away and Watanuki imagining what Himawari would say about it were hilarious. Overall, it was another intriguing, emotionally-driven story with a lot of magical action, taking place in a setting where the mystical and the mundane overlap in a compelling manner. I’m eager to read more.
I feel like the stories are repeating themselves but to be honest Tsubasa Chronicles was like that, too. Maybe this manga was always meant to be animated because it follows the anime formula. Main character does something brave, is saved, goes on being silly and in love with the girl. I really don't get our guy's fascination with the black haired girl that I don't care about enough to learn her name. She's pretty but barely seems to have some personality and she never really spends quality time with Watanuki. I mean, he tells her stories but she doesn't seem to go out of her way to be with him so Watanuki should take a hint and move on. Of course, I wonder if she's some kind of clone as well or send there by someone else, but we'll see.
In this volume, Watanuki learned that his life matters but we need to see how much this lesson will be carried to the rest of the story. Especially now that he has Domeki's eye.
Volume 8 of xxxHolic contains a tengu fan, fox-fire and an epic snowball fight. Watanuki is sent in Yuko's stead to when the Karasu-Tengu request her help to save the Zashiki-Warashi from the Joro-Gumo's lair. Zashiki-Warashi had entered her lair to retrieve Watanuki's eye, but us quickly over powered by the spider woman. Only though his quick thinking and the help of his pipe fox he is able to save Zashiki-Warashi, but looses his eye forever. Upon waking at Yuko's shop he makes peace with his lose, but is offered a gift from Domeki. The volume concludes with an epic snowball fight where their snow creations come to life and battle. Watanuki of course is on the loosing end again. Because it is never said enough 5 stars is never enough. xxxHolic deserves SO many more.
It doesn't matter how much Watanuki seems to hate and want to be rid of Dômeki, their is some fate at work connecting them. With one having the power to see/sense curses and the other to exorcise them, thay seem to make one well-fitted team. If only they got along. But the more time goes on, they are showing concern for each other. It's fun to watch! Watanuki's bad luck (especially when it come to things he wants or feels he deserves) is comical!
Watanuki is shocked to learn that his missing eye is sought after by the spirit world, and must face the Jorō-gumo to save Zashiki Warashi from its grasp when she attempts to retrieve it for him; Yuko takes on Domeki's wish, where the price will be paid should Watanuki fail to gain his eye back. CLAMP takes readers on a suspenseful adventure in this exciting entry, a wild ride with plenty of heart and humour. Can Watanuki rescue the Zashiki Warashi and gain back the use of his eye?
I'm getting so sick of Wata's shallow infatuation with that Hima girl, and with all the built up foreshadowing against their friendship I'm expecting a huge blow out when this plot point finally bursts. She's not even important in the plot, just third wheeling Wata's and Domeki's vastly more appealing dynamic.
I love the spider mini arc and am sad that it was only in the second season of the anime as I feel like it has some really important character development in it... I also really liked the symbolism of its conclusion.
