"You . . . you're . . . you're FLASH GORDON." -- Daranek, the purple-skinned prisoner-of-war

"You're damn right I am. Now, let's get to work . . . " -- Flash Gordon, the big damn hero

Although originating as a comic strip and low-budget movie serial series of the 1930's and 40's, these days the character of Flash Gordon will likely have more name recognition among my Gen-X set for the campy but unique 1980 film version and a less-remembered but still very good Saturday morning animated series running from 1979 to 1982 on NBC. Possibly taking all of those past interpretations into consideration, writer Adams and artist Conrad deliver an adventurous slice of sci-fi action/drama with the graphic novel Flash Gordon, Vol. 1: Escape from Planet Death!. With a notably catchy title gleaned straight from an old pulpy paperback and/or a forgotten B-movie, the story refreshingly avoids any unnecessary agendas or post-modernist updating to present our title hero immediately being thrown into an unenviable situation - captured during battle, imprisoned on a mysterious and harsh world, and seemingly framed for an atrocity he did not commit - that he has to work his way out of using both his brains and braun. An especially good segment featured a backstory on his longtime nemesis Emperor Ming of Mongo, darkly explaining how he earned the very appropriate sobriquet of 'Merciless.' While the exclusion of the usual valiant solid supporting characters Prince Barin and/or Vultan of the Birdmen (he of the "DIVE!!!" quote) was disappointing - although Princess Aura has a cameo appearance, flaunting a particularly deadly set of skills - I can only hope that the subsequent volume will bring the full ensemble cast back into the fold.

Unfamiliar with the world of Flash Gordon, I probably missed a few subtleties that will appeal to true fans, but nothing that detracts from the reading experience, even though it is clear that the action begins with an existing background that the reader is supposed to be familiar with. Then again, let's not forget, this is a pulp comic book, not a treatise on fluid mechanics, so connecting the dots is no great feat.

Otherwise, it's an enjoyable read, very pulp-ish in essence, but that's obviously the goal. No excessive complexity: villains/heroes. Action. Cliffhanger. Nothing that gives you a headache, with a very entertaining popcorn party vibe.

I can count on one hand the number of modern day comic book writers whose work I will always read. First up is Mark Millar and his MillarWorld books. Second is Geoff Johns and his work on his creator-owned label, Ghost Machine. Third is Jim Zub and his work on the new Conan the Barbarian series. And now I can safetly add Jeremy Adams. This guy gets comic books and he absolutely nails Flash Gordon. Artist Will Conrad supplies the visuals and together the pair deliver a fun, pulpy blast of sci-fi action goodness. Highly recommended.

Dare I say it? They are doing something FUN with Flash Gordon over at Mad Cave. Adams has the voice of the character. What comes thru most is Flash's virtue to always do the right thing even when it might benefit Ming. It's the frenemies buddy road trip across the galaxy you didn't know you wanted.

This is not my Flash Gordon, this is not my beautiful and wild planet Mongo.

Fantastic. Adams & Conrad are dynamic team in crafting this action pack romp into the world of Flash Gordon. I have always enjoyed the space opera and pulp adventures of space heroes like Flash, Luke Skywalker, Hal Jordan, Jon Stewart, and even Adam Strange. The plot was easy to follow and the pacing was really top notch. Conrad does a great job giving us some action packed panels. The book crackles with a high octane feel to the story. It was very interesting where Adams placed the reader in the story. After a exciting victory over his adversary Ming, Flash now finds himself in a new status quo with having to rely on his untruthful enemy and a close friend who has undergone a radical change. I could not put this volume down. I having read a comic series well crafted like this in a while. Adams is really growing as a comic book writer as he has now written two of my favorite DC Comics series Flash & Green Lantern. I always feel a great depth of fun when I read one of his comic book stories. Definitely pick up this series if you are a fan of superheroes and space fantasy. Here are a few Jeremy Adams titles I have read recently: Green Lantern, Vol. 1: Back in Action, The Flash, Vol. 19: One-Minute War, & Green Lantern Civil Corps Special (2024) #1 (Green Lantern.

Love this stuff. It's so fun, action-packed, full of great characters. Having grown up watching the immaculate, Queen-soundtracked film with my mom as a kid, I don't have a lot of experience with the original comics, or even know how to acquire them, but this one really captured that high space adventure I once loved.
Flash is still the innocent hero who will do the right thing even if it gives him a disadvantage, but he's also not so naive as to give too much of an advantage to his enemies.
The art is the best in the business. Lots of cool surprises and sci Fi stuff. Has the feel of planetary romance, sword and sorcery, etc. A cross between He-Man and John Carter. Flash Gordon approaching!

Not bad, with some very Flash-Grodonie moments, all dripping in a delicious pulp marinade. I wasn't super impressed with the writing or story, but still I smirked, as I always do, when Flash mentions how something way out in space is really just like playing football or working on the ranch. I personally thought that more could have been done with the aspect of Flash being a planet killer and no longer a hero of the people, which would have been a fun angle for our insidious Ming to exploit, rather than the lame blow to the back of the head level of complex plotting.
The art is great and the characters are rendered perfectly in a style that felt very classic. The color work was excellent in how it softly emphasized details, and dramatically highlighted our heroes.

I don't have much history with Flash Gordon, but fortunately almost none is needed to have fun with Escape from Planet Death! Flash is an interstellar knight, basically, battling the villainous Ming. An incident in one of their many battles sees Flash's lady love turned into a (possibly) cruel empress while he and Ming are sent off the Planet Death as prisoners.

Predictably, the foes must pair up to escape. Multiple battles ensue, with much delightful backstabbing. The artwork is terrific throughout, crisp and clear with a pleasant throwback feel. A random robot attains sentience towards the end - perhaps a nod towards continuity I'm not yet in on, but that was the only element that felt inexplicable. The rest is good, clean space adventure fun.

Really great start to a great series. MadCave has taken on several classic series and breathed new life into them. I really enjoyed this first part of the new Flash Gordon series. It does not try to retell the originally series but picks up sometime afterwards and then continues at a breakneck pace. The first arc is drawn by Will Conrad and it looks great.

Top notch for a modern comic, uses @&$!$@ instead of swears. Art is fantastic, fairly interesting plot and nothing objectionable, however it is very fast paced with not a lot of dialogue, rare is the page that has more than 30 words and most have far less.

Not as great as a golden era, but for taking a classic property it is well done.

This was a blast. Flash and Ming have to team up after Flash destroys Mongo and wakes up months later. Great art. Fun pulpy story. Really, really good.

Badly written and generically drawn. It’s so lacking in style that the ’80s movie should sue it for an offense against good taste.
