This is the first book by Owen Greer. I was actually contacted by the author on social media, he thought I would like his book, The Hunter. He was only partially right, I love it. I do hope there will be a second book in what could be a series. It starts in Afghanistan with a lot of background to establish what I will call the main character. That is Martin Devereaux, a Delta force operator there to rescue an interpreter and his family in the last days of the withdrawal in 2021. We get some background on why it's important for Devereaux to do this. Then things don't go their way, stuff happens and then we get to what the book is really about. I have heard that some think that a few chapters where to gruesome but I don't think so, they have a purpose in the story and I have read worse. ALthough the book is fiction there is a lot that rings true in this world we live in today. Where "Cover your Ass" is more important than doing the right thing. I will say this however, the book is dark and it is also filled with action and thrills. It is just what I want in a good story. I hope that there will be more great books from this author and I must thank him for the trouble of getting a book to me.

I found The Hunter to be a real page turner. It was brutal (maybe too brutal in one scene) fast paced, bloody and also emotionally moving. This was a military/covert operations thriller that will leave you on the edge of your seat!

Title: Compelling and Gripping: A Review of The Hunter by Owen Greer
Owen Greer’s The Hunter takes readers on a thrilling journey filled with suspense, nuanced characters, and unexpected twists. Set against the backdrop of the US withdrawal from Afghanistan and the global drug trade, the book artfully blends drama and action, making it a standout work in the military thriller category. Among its many strengths, the vivid detail of military weapons and tactics makes the novel both gripping and authentic.

Plot Overview (No spoilers!)
The story follows Martin Deveraux as he fights to survive after ISIS-K terrorists murder his Afghani interpreter friend and family. Greer masterfully builds tension as the protagonist navigates his escape and evasion from ISIS-K from Afghanistan through Pakistan and eventually into Mexico. At the same time, readers are drawn deeper into the world of military special operations and international crime. Each chapter leaves you eager to uncover what happens next, making it nearly impossible to put the book down.

Themes, Style, and Authenticity:
Greer delves into themes like morality, revenge, survival, and trust exploring them with depth and sensitivity. His writing style is vivid, descriptive, and fast-paced, immersing readers in both the action and the emotions of the characters. Additionally, Greer’s meticulous attention to the technical aspects of military weapons and tactics is a major strength. From the precise specifications of firearms to the intricacies of combat maneuvers, the vivid detail adds a layer of realism that enhances the reader’s experience. These descriptions are so immersive that they make the high-stakes fighting and survival scenes feel tangible, whether you're a seasoned enthusiast of military fiction or a newcomer to the genre.

Characters:
One of the book’s greatest strengths is its characters. Deveraux is portrayed with complexity, resilience, and humanity, and readers will find themselves rooting for him throughout his journey, even with his flaws. Supporting characters, like Amir Gul and John Babcock, add depth to the narrative, providing moments of raw emotion and intrigue.

Conclusion:

Complex characters, even more complex motivations; The Hunter is a compelling and unrelenting read. Through keenly observed detail, the author creates a world that is brutal and beautiful; unimaginable, but never unbelievable. This guy clearly knows his stuff. I can't wait to read the next one from Owen Greer--he's a man in full!

A very good book!

There is only one thing wrong with this book I couldn't put it down and another thing I liked about this good book it was written by an author from my home state! So I only got one more thing to say Mr Owen Greer you rock!

Greatly enjoyed this book, as an avid reader of Jack Carr and Tom Clancy I felt like this book hangs right in there with them. Can’t wait to see what comes next from this author!

The Hunter is an exceptionally fantastic book! It is dark, gritty, action packed, and raw. Definitely check your trigger warnings because this story can get dark fast. Some of the 'romantic' elements felt out of place but hold little to plot. Very reminiscent of The Shooter, Jack Reacher, and even the Bourne movies. The inclusion of Devereaux's ptsd makes the character feel real. It is also refreshing that the villains are actual villains and not moraly grey misunderstood type but straight evil. Martin Devereaux answers the question, "How will a man respond when his world burns down?"

The Hunter by Owen Greer is a truly remarkable debut novel. Greer crafts a narrative that’s equal parts action-packed and emotionally charged, exploring the roll of vengeance and the blurred lines of morality in a war-torn landscape. Greer’s protagonist Martin Devereaux has to fight not only the enemy but his inner demons in order to survive. I am definitely looking forward to Greer’s follow-up to this outstanding first book.

This book was sooo good! It checked all the boxes for me. Easy to read, fast paced, constant action, tough hero who isn’t a flawless superhero, the list goes on. I NEED more of this in my life! It was a real thrill ride! My word of caution to you though: if you are sensitive to sexual assault and violence in books, this one can be pretty graphic at points. The way he uses that though to fuel the book gets you very invested in the story though, so don’t let that stop you if you can take that.

This is a grippy and excellent action thriller along the lines of Jack Carr. It is faced paced, with a rich deep protagonist, well written action scenes often very violent and gruesome, and a plot that reads like a action movie.

This is a story of right and wrong versus duty. The story of revenge and the cost all tied together in a military based plot line wrapped inside more current world events and issues.

The story itself is of Martin Devereaux a Delta Force Operator on a mission to save his Afghan interpreter (and family) from Talban and ISIS forces in the midst of the Amercian troop pull out from Afghanistan in 2021. Things go side ways and they are unalived and Martin sets a course for revenge crossing lines that threaten to cost him his position, freedom and life.

Excellent! I hadn’t known about this author until I read a recent review on a Facebook group, I’m glad I did! My only disappointment is that as yet, there isn’t a follow up book! Please Mr Greer, type faster!

Phenomenal book. The story of Devereaux is told in a suspenseful and gripping way, that it makes you not want to put it down. Stayed up late a few nights reading it! What was most interesting is that I typically don’t read fiction and strongly prefer nonfiction - and this book shatters genres and appeals to both sides of my brain. I learned a lot about what it was like being on the front lines in Afghanistan, the psychological and other challenges service members face, and was entertained along the way - the story is so vivid, you can imagine being alongside Deveraux and being in the life experience. This book should be made into a full-length Hollywood movie! Highly recommend!

Repetitive and uninformed

I tried to give this book a fair shot but the repetition and incorrect information made it hard to read. Over and over the author used the term “SFOD-A” to represent the character being a Green Beret. Unfortunately, he got that from wikipedia or something, because while the ARE “Special Forces Operational Detachment - Alpha”, NO ONE refers to themselves as that. They are Green Berets, an ODA, or an A Team. Or just Special Forces. Over and over the author repeats things and they are typically wrong. Couldn’t finish.

A trully great book. It is a balanced mixture of technical details and gripping story. The flaws in the characters make this book a fresh and identifiable one, realizing that we all have troubles in our lives yet we can look forward to overcoming them and become better versions of ourselves. I look forward to the continuing saga and hope this is the beginning of a long series of books.

Couldn’t Put It Down!
This was such a fun read! Owen Greer nails the details — you can tell he really knows firearms and shooting. The realism adds so much to the story, and it pulls you in fast. If you’re into military fiction, action, or just love a good thriller, this one’s a must-read. Hard to put down!

Greer’s book brought me right into the story, descriptive in a way where I could clearly visualize all of the action unfolding. Rich characters, great dialogue, and well researched details - the story has stayed with me. I really couldn’t put it down. Looking forward to reading the sequel!

Great thriller with on stop action.
Martin Devereaux a trained black ops agent who is on his way to rescue and evacuate his Afghan asset and his
family, in the waning days of the American presence in Afghanistan, arrives to find his orders changed and he is told to only evacuate the asset and to leave his family behind. Martin refuses and proceeds with his evac plan. What happens when he arrives there and is confronted with advancing Taliban troops, sets him on a course of revenge against the Afghan mastermind behind the raid, Khalid Hassan.
But along the way, Devereaux becomes the hunted, by his own country.
Absolutely riveting suspense and enthralling intrigue.
Really really good read.
Hoping for the next installment.
