The Dragonwall Saga #4

Koldis the Green

Rate this book
The forest is dying, the kingdom is at war, and Claire’s magic is their only hope.

Claire understands that the key to defeating Kane lies in mastering her magic. She must venture deep within the Gable Forest, seeking the ancient knowledge of the elusive sprites. But the forest is not what it once was. A dark sickness is spreading, warping both the land and its creatures. She must master her growing magic before it’s too late. If she fails, both the forest and the kingdom will fall.

Meanwhile, King Talon and his inner circle find unexpected allies in the dwargs, who pledge their strength to reclaim Fort Squall. But the stakes are higher than ever. Talon needs a secret weapon to protect Squall’s End and stand any chance of reconquering the fort.

As things intensify, Claire and Talon’s paths converge. She’s not the same girl anymore—she’s more powerful, more dangerous, and determined to end the war. But can they turn to each other in the face of overwhelming odds? Or will their choices tear them apart?

Koldis the Green is the fourth installment of The Dragonwall Series, where the war is far from over and the battle for the kingdom’s future begins now.

Mrs. Mitchell is an author of young adult fantasy and paranormal romance. Her debut novel, Blood and Ballet, is a unique combination of two of her favorite things: vampires and ballet. She is currently working on a young adult epic fantasy series set in the fictional world of Dragonwall. You can purchase the first and second installments, Talon the Black and Reyr the Gold, through bookstores worldwide. Autographed copies can be obtained from her website store.

Mrs. Mitchell also has her Ph. D in physics with an emphasis in non-imaging optics; she is an illumination engineer for a large corporate lighting company in the United States.

She adores spending time with her husband and their three dogs (two Siberian huskies and an English lab). She also enjoys playing piano, reading, writing, baking goodies, eating chocolate, tea, wine, Prosecco, and especially bullet journaling.

Mrs. Mitchell offers “author reviews” for books that catch her eye, and you are welcome to submit your book request via goodreads messages. She reserves the right to leave messages unanswered if the book does not catch her attention.

Disclaimer: Please remember that these are my opinions and if you feel differently, that’s okay. Thanks!

Notes: POV = 3rd person, multiple POVs, with heavy focus on Esterpine, the Sprite realm, and the political and magical dynamics there.
Overall: The scope stays wide with new settings, lore, and political intrigue. The pacing slows in places due to long recaps and info dumps. The forest and Sprite culture add a fresh dynamic, though some plot elements feel inconsistent with the rules previously established.

Main Characters: I found that Claire is at her most dramatic here, with constant hyperbole that sometimes undermines her otherwise strong role. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the time we spent with her in this book. I feel like we spent significantly less time with Talon than we have in previous books but the action in this one made that a sacrifice that I brushed past easily. Koldis is one of my favorite shields, so it was really nice to get some more chapters focused on him.

Side Characters: The King Tree is oddly charming and memorable. Some things in this one feel off, like they’re plot armour and feel forced to me (but that could just be me). Cat’s arc works as a redemption shift, even if she is not truly redeemed. Her fit with the ship’s crew makes sense to me and I like her there, even if she never really received justice.

Plot/Story: I know that this book had to happen, that Claire had to get the training she needs for the next three books (I can’t believe there’s only three left! And the last two will BOTH be out this year!) I’m glad that things aren’t unrealistically easy for her. The revelations about Isabella’s cruelty toward the Drengr continue to amaze me, it really is shocking considering that she is known to be about balance and all that (but clearly, is more selfish than she is remembered).

Romance: The shield romances are hard to invest in since the rules make them doomed. Bryon and Tamara’s relationship is more satisfying, echoing the warmth of Bryon’s parents.

General: The “previously on” style recap at the start is frustrating. It might have been useful when the books were released far apart, but now it interrupts momentum for anyone reading the series back to back.

I don’t think that this series need introduction in my profile. I have read and reviewed all three previous instalments in the series and my love for Dragonwall is known to those who follow me some time now.

In this book, we see the story from Koldis’ perspective. We delve a bit further into the story and also into other characters that we find in the spotlight in this book.

The world building is once more amazing. I love the way it is presented and how magic works. I love the way Melissa is ‘feeding’ us pieces of the greater story and how these pieces slowly fill in the gaps and the background plot.

The romance is forever present in the series but I like that is not central-built but compliments the fantasy parts. Every book focuses on a different romance so I’ll leave it to you to discover by reading the book ;)

Incredible- in absolute awe of the work Melissa Mitchell provides! The ability to go onto book 4 (Koldis) and still continue to build a slow burn with not only the FMC and MMC but with other characters as well.

This series starts with what we believe to be multiple side stories or quests that start weaving intricately and beautifully. The characters continue to develop and grow on the reader.

This book (at this time) is my favorite in the series! So much banter, yearning, and moments that make the reader feel giddy, butterflies, warm and fuzzy inside. Followed by moments shock and relief. All of the things every book should do to pull you in.

This is a 5 star read-hands down 🙌🏽

Book 5 ( Beldeth) is on deck! (I would binge but Jovari is just preordered and what if there’s a cliff hanger…)

Oh, my God. I can't even.

I have found here a naturally badass FMC that does not come across as a try-hard. I think Claire might be... wait, let me think... yes, Claire might be the first FMC that I truly love. She is smart, she is strong, she is growing...

The development of Koldis here.... ugh, Koldis might be my favorite shield so far...

Spending time in Esterpine, the sprite forest is such a beautiful world... Walking around the forest, caressing unicorns, and singing vines to life... Yes, I am here for it.

Jeanine's story, I am looking forward to how it continues developing...

How unexpected the development of Caterina!

Des has come so far too!

I am deeply worried for each and every character as war looms big.

OMG this is definitely one of my favourite books of the series so far!! Mitchell’s writing is just getting better and better, it’s such a joy to read these books.
I was hesitant knowing that Talon and Claire didn’t have too many scenes together but OMG now I don’t even know why because the book was amazing and the scenes they did have together? impeccable !!

Need the next book to be fully uploaded already!!

5*

This series has me completely enthralled. The badass FMC became even more badass, I’m loving everything second of it. A few of the side characters got into my nerves, because I wasn’t that interested in what they were doing, but I still ended up enjoying the little extra snippets. I’m afraid that I’m building up too many expectations, but it has been so freaking amazing so far. I’m dying to know what will happen next.

couldn’t put it down

Yes it is a slow burn But you’ll soon be wrapped up with the side intricacies of all characters. Mitchell builds a world up through her characters and their views against good and evil.
