From bestselling author Sarah Deeham comes a new boss-assistant steamy standalone romance.
I. Quit.
I dream of uttering those two little words. Because after years as movie star Sebastian Blake’s personal assistant, I’ve had enough. My infuriating, impossible, and ridiculously hot boss may pay well, but it’s hard to have a life when I’m at his beck and call twenty-four seven.
It’s time to forget any inconvenient feelings I once had for him and go after my own dreams. I figure Sebastian won’t care. Except, he’s not letting me leave so easily. And I somehow go from personal assistant to fake fiancee — and sharing a bed with my boss.
I need her. Nobody else.
Emma’s my sounding board. My conscience. My right hand. Sure, she’s a sarcastic pain in my ass, but she makes my chaotic life run smoothly. So when she suddenly quits, I refuse to take no for an answer and use her two-weeks’ notice to convince her to stay.
Except…. She’s not cooperating. And when she suddenly ends up in the hospital, everything changes. I’ll do whatever it takes to care for the one woman whose job it always was to take care of me. Even if that means being fake-engaged. And not giving into temptation...
Sarah Deeham is the author of spicy slowburn romance novels to make readers smile and swoon. She is an American living overseas and currently makes her home in Kuala Lumpur with her husband, two children, and lazy golden retriever. When she's not sitting in a cafe dreaming up stories, she's a photographer and world wanderer.
Star-Crossed Assistant by Sarah Deeham Falling for Famous Book 5
Boss realising how important his assistant actually is to him is a favourite.
After Sebastian – movie star – ruins Emma’s – his long-term assistant – rare nights off it is the last straw and she realises if she doesn’t quit, she will never move on professionally.
Sebastian doesn’t like this and has several plans to make her stay but they are unsuccessful.
It was nice to see Sebastian look after Emma when she was unwell.
Once they got together there wasn’t much but filler – a scene with the girls from previous books and her setting up her business.
Overall, a good read, with enjoyable characters.
Movie star, boss employee, slow burn, secret pining, only one bed, fake fiancée, spice.
This is the fourth book in this impressive series, and this is Sebastian and Emma’s story. Sebastian is a movie star, and Emma is his assistant, who has had enough at being at his beck and call 24/7, and she resigns. Sebastian refuses to let Enna leave, and she somehow Emma goes from assistant to fake fiancée. This is a well written easy to read, slow burn story, with tension, boss / assistant, fake engagement, forced proximity, humour, witty banter, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to an entertaining, celebrity romance. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
I received an ARC of this through NetGalley at wow it was adorable. Emma Reynolds has been Sebastian Blake’s assistant for 7 long years. Emma’s boss may be hot and give her an amazing salary, but the trouble he causes her isn’t worth it and she finally quits. Sebastian isn’t letting her go that easy. They’re both too stubborn for that. One night, Emma unexpectedly ends up in the hospital and what do you know, now there is a fake engagement! We love to see it 🤩 This book was such a quick read. It was silly. It was cute. It had a little bit of spice and I definitely recommend. It was my first book by the author and I plan to eventually go back and read the others from this series!!
-fake engagement -friends to lovers -banter -slow burn 🌶️🌶️
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Ok, I am going to skip the “copy and paste” of the blurb from the book summarizing the plot. I will dive straight into my take on this. I did not dislike this book as much as I thought I would. The writing is not terrible, like *so* many other books in this genre. The two characters were not one-dimensional, as so often happens in the genre. (The supporting characters are pretty flat, but that might be a feature of the fact that they all showed up in their own books earlier in this series, so maybe the author did not feel the need to flesh them out as much. That would be the only way I would say it would have been helpful to have read the previous books in the series. Other than that, this works fine as a standalone. You don’t *really* need to know the other characters’ back stories to fully understand this story – but the vague references can be kind of annoying to a person like me who is obsessed with reading series books in order. Reading this out of order was a big step for me.)
The female main character had a certain level of self-awareness, which was refreshing. She understood the fact that her employment with the male main character was preventing her from growing as a person, and that she needed to be the one to institute change in her life. BUT … there were some parts of her that were really hard to swallow. For example, she is committed to a life of sacrifice so that her sister can graduate from college with no student debt. Nice, I guess … but realistic? Not so much. I get that the author is trying to give the FMC a sort of savior complex due to her childhood trauma (mom’s death, dad’s addiction, troubled childhood, etc.), but still. (Also, FWIW, she’s not doing her sister any favors by killing herself through overwork and not making her sister take on any of the financial burden of her own education. It’s a life lesson about choices: You want to go to an Ivy League school? Figure out how to finance it.)
There were some rather cringe-inducing moments, as well, when the FMC sort of broke the fourth wall by mentally acknowledging romcom tropes that were going on in the story (forced shared-bed scenario, fake engagement). It gave an “I’m really cooler than all those *other* hack authors” vibe. Not attractive.
Speaking of tropes: I didn’t really buy the need for the fake engagement. I understand the explanation given, but it sort of rang hollow. They could have gotten away with just claiming that the news that they were engaged was just so much gossip; they just needed to be willing to brazen it out.
When I started reading Star-Crossed Assistant, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’d never picked up a book by this author before, but the writing immediately pulled me in, and the characters kept me glued to the page.
I absolutely adored Emma and Sebastian. They were opposites in so many ways, and yet, they fit together so well at the same time. There was chemistry, and emotional depth, and spice, though the spice came later since this was a slow to burn romance. But man, the slow burn really worked here. It kept the tension up, and it was a great choice for this couple, because there was so much more to explore in terms of who they were and what they wanted.
Emma has been Sebastian’s assistant for a few years when the story starts, but she’s grown tired of his “fires” and his lack of boundaries. She wants to have more of a life, more a balance, but isn’t quite sure how to go about it. Or she isn’t until he pushes her too far by ruining the end of an important day for her.
Of course, Sebastian didn’t mean to ruin her day, and though he doesn’t explain his reasoning for doing what he did—at least not until later. He does make it clear to her that he is sorry for upsetting her, though, which is nice but also comes a little late for her.
Sebastian cares a lot about Emma, and it shows in everything he does, though not always in what he says because he plays things pretty close to the chest. But when she tells him she quits, he pulls out all the stops to keep her in his life. Yet he doesn’t fully understand how much she needs a change . . . well, he doesn’t until he’s practically hit over the head with the evidence of it.
You see, Sebastian is what you would call a lovable rascal. He’s rebel in a lot of ways, but he’s also doing his best to be better. He knows he needs to repair the damage he’s done to his career and reputation, and Emma has been a large part of that realization journey. She’s changed him, but he doesn’t realize quite how much until he’s on the verge of losing her for good.
Emma is a strong, intelligent woman, and a true lifeline for Sebastian. She makes his life better just by being in it, but the fact that he pays her to keep him in line and organized makes things a bit tricky. Lucky for Sebastian, he wakes up just in the nick of time.
Star-Crossed Assistant is a fun, delightful romance read filled with some amazing characters and even more engrossing scenes. I adored the heck out of it and will be reading more of this author’s work in the future because of it.
*Thank you to the author and publicist for an ARC of this book. I also bought the book on Amazon because I loved it so much.
This book was the perfect mix of chaos, tension, heart, and “oh my god just kiss already” energy and I loved every messy second of it.
Emma and Sebastian had that delicious slow-burn tension that’s been simmering for YEARS and the moment Emma finally decides she’s done being the endlessly available assistant… I was cheering. Because honestly? After dealing with Sebastian Blake’s dramatic movie star life for that long, the woman deserved a medal and a beach vacation.
Sebastian though… wow. This man does NOT handle Emma quitting well. At all. Watching him slowly spiral the second he realizes she might actually leave his orbit was both hilarious and kind of swoony. He thinks he can just convince her to stay like it’s another business decision, but the more desperate he gets the clearer it becomes that Emma isn’t just his assistant. She’s basically the glue holding his entire chaotic life together.
Then the fake fiancé situation hits and everything explodes in the best way possible. Fake engagement ✔️ forced proximity ✔️ sharing a bed ✔️ years of unresolved feelings bubbling to the surface ✔️. The tension between them was unreal. Every sarcastic comment, every lingering look, every moment where they’re trying so hard not to cross the line… I was eating it up.
But what really got me was when Emma ends up in the hospital and Sebastian’s whole attitude shifts. Suddenly the cocky movie star disappears and you see how deeply he actually cares about her. The man goes from dramatic boss to fiercely protective in about two seconds flat and it completely melted my heart. The way he steps up for her after that? Swoon city.
Emma is also fantastic. She’s strong, sarcastic, tired of putting her own life on hold, and watching her finally demand more for herself made the romance even better. Because Sebastian didn’t just have to realize he loved her… he had to prove he deserved her.
This book had so many of my favorite tropes packed into one deliciously addictive story: ✨ boss/assistant tension ✨ fake engagement chaos ✨ forced proximity ✨ the “wait… I actually can’t live without you” realization
And the chemistry between Emma and Sebastian? Absolutely electric.
I flew through this in one sitting and closed the book with the biggest grin. It was funny, emotional, steamy, and ridiculously swoony. If you love a boss who finally realizes the woman running his life is also the woman running his heart… this one is a must read. 💫📚💖
OMG you guys. I cannot even right now. This book. THIS BOOK. I think it might already be one of my favorite books of the YEAR. And guess what? It’s my first book by Sarah Deeham—and I am officially obsessed. Like, I can’t even… I NEED the rest of the series immediately. Emma Reynolds and Sebastian Blake? I die for them. I can’t even. Let’s talk Emma for a second—she is everything. She’s smart, she’s ambitious, she’s funny, and yes, she’s a little bit of a baddie, but she’s also a people-pleaser who’s just trying to do her best in a world that constantly tests her. I loved how she called Sebastian out, how she fought for herself, and how she finally took control of her life. She’s such a mood, such a queen energy—I loved every second of her POV. And Sebastian Blake. Ohhhh Sebastian. The man, the myth, the new book boyfriend we all deserve. He’s intense. He’s magnetic. He doesn’t always respect boundaries—but the way he cares about Emma? You feel it in every page. The slow burn between them? CHEMISTRY. PURE FIRE. The friendship, the banter, the tension—it’s everything I ever wanted. I could feel their emotions, their longing, their frustration, every single word. The plot? I was hooked from page one. Emma has been Sebastian’s assistant for years, crushing quietly, keeping him organized, dealing with his demands… until she snaps and finally says, “I quit.” She’s ready to start her own business with her sister—her organizational skills paired with her sister’s interior design dreams. And Sebastian? He’s in full panic mode. Everyone in his life has walked away, and the one person he never thought would? He can’t let her go. And that’s when the fun begins. The banter between them had me snorting out loud. The tension had me holding my breath. And the SPICE—y’all, the spice is so well-earned. Once they finally give in, it’s hot, it’s messy, it’s emotional—it’s exactly what a slow-burn romance should be. Honestly, I cannot recommend this enough. Boss x assistant? Check. Friends-to-lovers? Check. Fake engagement? Check. Forced proximity? Check. Slow burn that will make your heart ache and your stomach flip? CHECK. Emma and Sebastian will absolutely steal your heart. Sarah Deeham is officially a new auto-buy author for me. I loved every. single. word. I am so here for this series, and I’m counting down the seconds until I can read more. FIVE STAR CROSSED STARS for this one. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Where has Sarah Deeham been all my life??? I can’t believe I haven’t read this series before Star-Crossed Assistant. I’m ready to read the Deeham backlist now!
We begin our journey with Emma, the incredibly organized assistant to a Hollywood star who is more than a little fed up with putting her own dreams on hold. For seven years, she’s been on call 24/7 for her A-lister boss, Sebastian Blake. She asked for just one night off to attend her sister’s college graduation, but Sebastian ruined it by repeatedly calling until she had no choice but to return to work. That is her final straw, so Emma gives him her two weeks’ notice. Determined not to lose her, Sebastian uses every resource a multimillionaire has to try to change her mind.
With the stage set, we get a hilarious and deliciously romantic war to win Emma’s heart and skills as the best assistant in the world. The phrase “You don’t know what you’ve got until it is gone” definitely applies here. Sebastian is gutted by the thought of not having Emma in his life. He’s spent years suppressing his feelings because she’s his employee. It turns out Emma has been doing the same thing. In the two weeks leading up to her last day, Sebastian gets dangerously close to crossing the line… and then that line is obliterated in a way I never expected.
I adored both of these characters with my whole heart. I know people who have the organizational tendencies that Emma has, and I totally understand the urge to put everything in its proper place. While incredibly talented, she is also humble and down to earth with a delightful sense of humor.
Sebastian … what can I say? The description of the man makes me think of a dark-haired Adonis with eyes as blue as the summer sky and a body made for sin. While he was a bit clueless in the beginning, he matures and grows over the course of the novel, making him an officially swoon-worthy book boyfriend.
Caution: This story is a slow-burn, but when the spice arrives, it is explosive.
While this is a series, I didn’t feel lost at all, just curious about the other couples from earlier books that make appearances here.
From a mansion in the Hollywood Hills to a winery in Napa, this story sweeps readers into a heartfelt, slow-burn romance that makes it impossible not to fall in love with Emma and Sebastian.
I received Star-Crossed Assistant for free. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Trigger Warnings include: Substance abuse, rehab, and recovery play a role in this story. There is “other woman drama” before the main characters are together. There is no cheating or blurred lines. An MC has a medical incident on page. Sexual harassment, brief physical violence, hoarding disorder, pre-diabetes, blackout from alcohol, and mental health issues
Emma has been living her life for Sebastian. Making sure his life is easy, while ignoring her own hopes and dreams. Until she tells her actor-boss that she will no longer be his assistant, because it’s time for her to start her own business doing something she loves. It’s a wake up call for Sebastian. He’s a (slightly) stereotypical celebrity holding a silver-spoon with nepotism in it. But he’s more than who the tabloids say he is, and Emma sees him. And I was right there with her as he proved her was a better man, the man she deserved. I started to know him, understand him. And then I was cheering him on! They both had their own reasons to worry, to be hesitant. I enjoyed their friendly, comfortable banter. I loved being a part of their journey as they figured out the people they truly were, and how they became better because of each other.
My Favorite Quotes: • “You’re cute when you’re annoyed.” • “I don’t need anyone else. I need you.” • “You make everything you touch, everyone you’re around, better. You’re the best out of all of us.” • “I just want to be wherever you are.” • “You’re the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.” • “I’m not going to stop until you’re calling me God and coming all over my face. But that doesn’t mean I won’t make you beg first.” • “I’ll never not care.” • “Be a good girl and put your legs around my shoulders.”
7/10 Dirty Birdy 4/10 Fake Relationship 5/10 Forced Proximity 6/10 Friends to Lovers 6/10 Slow Burn 8/10 Workplace 6/10 Series
The Falling for Famous series just released book 5, Star Crossed Assistant. Sarah Deeham has once again brought readers a fun, romantic, and spicy story focusing on a celebrity and his personal assistant. It can easily be read as a standalone, but there are characters from previous books. Reading their stories does bring new depth to this story, so I do recommend you read them all.
Emma is over her job, over her boss, over it all. She works hard for her boss and while he pays well, she has no work/life balance. I appreciated her determination and tenacity, especially since she is supporting her little sister going to college. Being a big sister myself, if my parents had not been able to provide for my siblings, I would have done anything it took to do that for them. Emma does try to quit, but her boss is making leaving really tough. I will admit, how Emma did not really see that her boss has feelings for her, kinda threw me. I mean, it is evident this man is gone for her.
Sebastian doesn’t mean to be the type of boss he is, but he doesn’t know how else to get Emma’s attention. When she finally decides to quit, he is pulling out all the stops to keep her in his life. While he goes about this in totally the wrong way, I couldn’t help but love how much he cares for Emma. Don’t get me wrong, as a grown up, use your words and let the chips fall where they may, but in a romcom, his behavior was sweet. When he finally realizes what he is doing wrong though, he fixes it.
Overall this is a delightful read that made me smile. Emma and Sebastian definitely find themselves in situations where the chemistry is undeniable. The banter between these two is wonderful, with Emma holding nothing back and Sebastian just melting for her. I will admit, it was nice though to see Emma finally take a stand and Sebastian grow up a bit. Sarah did a great job developing their relationship throughout the book and boy did she make Sebastian work to win over Emma.
As always, review any author notes before reading.
What to Expect: ⭐Celebrity Romance 💕Boss x Assistant ⭐Fake Engagement 💕She Falls First ⭐He Falls Harder 💕Forced Proximity ⭐Workplace Romance
I got an advanced arc of this book through NetGalley, and had the chance of reading it before it was officially launched. It was light and fun read, and I overall enjoyed myself as I watched Sebastian’s and Emma’s love story unfold. I jumped into this book ready to simply love it, since it had some of my favorite tropes lined up, however, I must admit it wasn’t everything I was waiting for. The book is fun and light, and reading it was enjoyable, however, the pacing felt slightly… unnatural. The author advertised this book as a “she falls first, but he falls harder”, but I don’t think that’s quite it. Also, the pacing in which Sebastian notices his feelings felt a little lacking, and I think as a dual pov book, the author could’ve made better use of Sebastian’s pov, show us more of his process of realizing his feelings for Emma instead of telling us that he had loved her all along, although oblivious to it. I think Emma’s reaction to him also bothered me a little. The way she couldn’t talk enough about the effects he had on her body… it was just not it for me. And although this is mostly a personal preference, I would’ve appreciated the hot scenes more if they had come to realize each other's feelings first, instead of the whole “let’s not talk about it so we won’t jinx stuff” act in the beginning or whatever. I did appreciate the lack of unnecessary drama on this book tho. The way Sebastian was steadfast and stuck to his words and also how he didn’t back down when it came to conquering her. One of the things I hate the most is the misunderstanding and the breakup trope to as more drama to the story that most authors resort to when writing romances and this one had none of that, for which I was grateful and really appreciated. Overall, despite the points I didn’t appreciate as much, the book delivers everything you would expect of such a read: light and fun romance, a little cliche (but cliches exist for a reason!!!), a swoon worthy male MC (Sebastian didn’t disappoint as a man written by a woman 😌🙏🏽), and a fulfilling romance which leaves us all satisfied in the end because it gave us all we wanted.

I went into Star-Crossed Assistant by Sarah Deeham expecting a fun, lighthearted boss-assistant story, but I ended up getting so much more. I can honestly say I am officially obsessed with Emma and Sebastian’s chaotic, sweet, and incredibly steamy world!
The setup is every trope-lover's dream: Emma has spent seven years as the right hand to movie star Sebastian Blake, but when she finally reaches her breaking point and quits, she is ready to walk away and start her own life, but Sebastian? He is absolutely not having it. Watching a powerful, self-confident man realize he is a total disaster without his assistant was the highlight of my week.
But you gals, it is not just the banter (which is top tier, by the way). The depth in this story really caught me off guard. When Emma ends up in the hospital, and they fall into a "fake engagement" just so he can stay by her side, you see a completely different side of Sebastian. He is fiercely protective and cares so deeply that it actually made my heart ache.
I loved that there was no third-act breakup, just a couple actually being adults and sticking together. And the nicknames? No cringey pet names here, just "My Emma," which felt so much more intimate and real.
This, for me, was an easy 5-star read! Even though this is book 5 in the Falling for Famous series, it works perfectly as a standalone, though I am definitely going back to binge the first four now.
A massive thank you to Sarah Deeham and The Author Agency for the privilege of reading this ARC! The curtain rises today, March 18th! Do yourself a favor and go grab Star-Crossed Assistant on Kindle Unlimited right now. You will not regret it!

I discovered this series starting with Book 3 and have loved each of them since. I even have holds on Libby for Books 1 and 2 because every book just adds more joy, and I’m excited to see the origin stories of Chase and Olivia, and Poppy and Ronan. They're characters I’ve grown to adore with each installment.
Honestly, I think this one might be my favorite. Watching Sebastian finally realize he’s been in love with Emma this whole time was such a delight! He’s a total idiot (affectionately, of course), but he also has bigger challenges in his life, so we’ll forgive him.
Sebastian’s story turned out to be much deeper than I expected. My heart ached for him as he navigated the revelations that come with learning to let people in. Found family truly matters to him, and the people he surrounds himself with become the missing pieces to heal the holes in his heart.
Emma, too, had her share of struggles, with a childhood full of matching trauma that lingered into adulthood. While their experiences were similar (addict parents, growing up too fast) they stemmed from very different places (loving parent v. cold parents), and it’s exactly what made them the perfect complement to each other. It took these two “dummies” a little while (affectionate again!) to get there, but watching them finally connect was so sweet. Sebastian really is green flags with how detail orientated he is and how thoughtful he truly is.
This slow burn is done beautifully. Even though it’s friends-to-lovers (not usually my favorite), it’s executed so well that you’ll be grinning for these two by the end.
Thank you, @authorsarahdeeham and @theauthor.agency
Another book in the Falling for Famous series, but unfortunately this instalment was not my favourite.
I was not into the MMC’s manchild behaviour and felt that the FMC could do so much better, even if he was a celebrity billionaire and if she had a crush on him for years and years.
He kept pressuring her to change her mind, was in the way of her finally doing something for herself, kept going over her boundaries, and even went as far as to jeopardise a very important job interview because he was trying to be funny and get into her pants (also actively working on this at a dinner table with plenty people around with whom you have a business relationship… perhaps not!).
Still, story flowed nicely and was easy to read, but about halfway through I realised there was still half of the book to go. I could not really see how the story could develop over the remaining pages.
Loved the FMC’s talents in organisation and spreadsheets (side-eyeing her bad saving habits and having only a three months buffer, yes I know she was putting her sister through college). Very cute and fit in well with the story. “You are born to be an organizer. For example, what do you do when you’re stressed?” “I reorganize my bookshelves.” EXACTLY. (And I am more than happy to be bribed with interior design and stationery supplies, just so any eligible bachelor knows..!)
The medical mishap and the family mystery felt a bit much for a book already filled with a celebrity fake dating storyline. Also, knocking down a wall in a historical and I am sure heritage-protected house to please the missus is not cute. It is a finable offence.
3 stars.
I received an ARC of this book (thanks!) and these are my own opinions.
This book, oh my word! When I read the blurb, I immediately thought of the Hugh Grant/Sandra Bullock movie Two Weeks Notice. However, this book was so much more than that.
So Emma is an overworked assistant for rich, priveleged movie star Sebastian Blake. She’s at his beck and call almost 24/7. She’s supposed to get Saturdays off but when she tries to have a social life, Sebastian calls her up for something. He interrupts a date because he can’t find the remote (although to be fair he was rescuing her from a catfish). But Emma finally reaches her breaking point when he pulls her away from her sisters graduation party because he gets himself arrested for hitting a fellow actor. Emma quits and suddenly Sebastian doesn’t know what to do, he just knows he can’t live without her.
Emma’s final day working for him comes at around 41% following Sebastian’s many attempts to get her to stay and failing. The remaining 59% is what follows an accident, Sebastian taking care of Emma and her starting to see a different, more caring side of him. She’d always had a crush on him which she tampered down due to their professional relationship. Now it’s all coming out, and she’s finding it hard to resist him. Throw in a fake engagement and a one bed scenario at a mansion in Napa and Emma is all but undone.
I loved the dynamic between Emma and Sebastian, they were close given how long they had worked together, the banter between them was fun. Emma was sassy and didn’t hold back in telling Sebastian when he was being an ass. Sebastian was sweet and gentle when taking care of her but also playful and flirty when necessary.
Star Assistant by Sarah Deeham is an absolute delight from start to finish—a heartfelt, engaging story that completely drew me in.
Emma has spent seven long years as Sebastian’s assistant—years filled with chaos, blurred boundaries, and quietly putting his needs before her own. All the while, she’s harbored feelings for him that have never been returned beyond friendship. Eventually, the imbalance becomes too much. Determined to reclaim her life, Emma makes the bold decision to leave and finally pursue her long-held dream of starting a business with her sister.
Sebastian, however, isn’t ready to let her go. He pulls out all the stops—offering her more money, better perks, even her own assistant—but Emma stands firm. It’s only when she falls ill that everything begins to shift. Both Emma and Sebastian are forced to confront the true depth of their relationship, and Sebastian, in particular, begins to understand just how much Emma needs this change—not just for her career, but for herself.
What makes this book so special is how it balances lighthearted, feel-good moments with deeper emotional themes. It explores personal growth, self-worth, and the courage it takes to put yourself first after years of living for someone else. The chemistry between Emma and Sebastian is compelling, and their journey feels authentic and satisfying.
I’ve loved this author’s previous work, and this book is no exception. Sarah Deeham has a distinctive writing style that effortlessly pulls you in and keeps you hooked. Star Assistant is fun, heartwarming, and ultimately empowering—a story about love, but also about finding your own path.
Thank you @authorsarahdeeham for an early copy of Star-Crossed Assistant. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. 🤍
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 Release date: March 18th, 2026
🛑Read on with caution; review may contain spoilers🛑
I enjoyed Star-Crossed Assistant overall, especially the dynamic between Sebastian and Emma, but this definitely leans more slow-burn than I usually prefer.
Sebastian’s POV, in particular, left me a bit conflicted. For a large part of the story, it felt like he didn’t truly see Emma beyond her role as the one constant in his chaotic life. His realization of his feelings seemed to come very suddenly after she quits, almost like a wake-up call rather than something that developed naturally over time. While I understand the intention behind that shift, I didn’t fully connect with his emotional journey.
Emma, on the other hand, completely carried the story for me. Her longing was so clear and heartfelt, and I really empathized with her struggle to carve out a life and identity separate from Sebastian. Watching her choose herself was one of the strongest and most satisfying parts of the book.
Their chemistry was decent, and there were definitely moments that worked, but I found myself more invested in Emma’s personal growth than in the romance itself.
Still, this was an enjoyable read with a compelling emotional core, especially if you love slow-burn, boss-assistant romances with a strong, self-aware heroine.
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Star Crossed Assistant by Sarah Deeham is a deliciously slow-burn, dual POV romance that absolutely delivers on tension, longing, and emotional payoff.
Sebastian is a movie star with a reputation that desperately needs repairing, and Emma has been his loyal personal assistant for seven years and four months (a detail Sebastian never forgets). While Emma once had a crush on him, she insists she’s long since moved on. But after dedicating so much of her life to Sebastian, she’s left wondering what her future looks like—especially if he no longer needs her.
As Sebastian navigates his career comeback and a string of relationships, Emma makes the difficult decision to finally step away. But when she falls ill and is hospitalized, everything changes. In a moment of panic—and desperation—Sebastian claims they’re engaged just to stay by her side. From there, his actions speak louder than words: he chooses Emma again and again, in ways that make this story deeply satisfying.
The slow burn in this book is exquisite torture in the best possible way. Every glance, every moment of forced proximity, every unspoken feeling builds beautifully until you can’t take it anymore—in a good way.
Tropes: • Boss / Assistant • One Bed • Fake Fiancés • Forced Proximity • Slow Burn
If you love romances where the emotional tension simmers for as long as possible before finally boiling over, this one is absolutely worth the wait
I have read and loved the whole "Falling For Famous" series by author Sarah Deeham and I couldn't wait to read Emma's and Sebastian's story at last. And let me tell you: it was worth waiting for. This book tells the story of Emma and Sebastian. If you - like me- have read the rest of the series you will already know actor Sebastian and his very efficient (and hot) assistant from the other books, if this is your first book in the series, no worries, it can totally be read as a stand-alone. Emma has been working for Sebastian for seven years and while she used to have a huge crush on him she since has gotten over him and they are basically friends. But one day Sebastian's actions put her over the egde and she decides to quit her job. This leads to Sebastian realizing he can't bear to lose Emma (and not only because she is the best assistant he ever had) and he starts wooing her... This book was such an entertaining and fast-paced story and time just flew by while reading it. I could totally relate to both main characters and was rooting for them from the start. I loved their bantering and their chemistry and how they both had baggage from their past they had to overcome. I loved their love-story so much and pretty much devoured the book in one day. And when I finished reading it I wanted to read the whole series again (and I will as soon as my TBR pile has stopped growing ;-) ) I received an ARC via The Author Agency and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I received this as an ARC through NetGalley and loved it!!
The book follows Emma, an overworked assistant trying to keep her wild movie-star boss Sebastian (and her feelings for him that haven’t seemed to disappear) under control. After realising there is more to life than 24-7 phone calls and jail bail outs, Emma quits. Queue Sebastian’s spiral .. and this man does not take it well. When I say this man begs her to stay, he begs, but nothing works. She is determined to move on and start build the life she really wants. As a last ditch effort, Sebastian takes Emma out on her last night with him to a Premiere where 1 hospital trip and a concussion later, Emma finds herself with a new fake fiancée, who turns out to be crushing just as hard as she is!
I loved how witty, funny and honestly awkward this book got. People tend to leave the tension and those awkward moments out, I’m glad Sarah writes them in! It’s helps build up that slow burn that keeps you turning pages, hoping to finally get the first kiss!!
For those who haven’t read yet, please pick this up as soon as you can. It’s not overly serious but that’s what makes it so freaking good. A sweet, funny story that’s great for a cozy reading break!
Thank you for the opportunity to read this early!

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice level: 🔥🔥 Tropes: Boss x assistant, secret pining, fake engagement, single bed!!
Thank you to the author and The Author Agency for my gifted copy of this book.
Emma has worked as Sebastian Blake’s assistant for 7 years. 7 years of being on call non-stop, answering his every beck and call, and no personal time. But now, she has quit. It’s time to forget her inconvenient but admittedly hot boss and focus on what she wants. She expects Sebastian won’t care - she’s just his assistant - but he isn’t letting her leave and is doing everything in his power to stop her including making her his fake fiancé. Sebastian sees Emma as more than his assistant. Her quitting throws his entire world into a spiral but when opportunity presents itself, he declares them engaged and is able to keep close a little while longer.
I really enjoyed this book. The banter between Emma and Sebastian was great. I laughed out loud so much and that is always a good sign. I enjoyed that the book spent some time showing the star-assistant relationship before diving into these two having a “fake engagement.” I enjoyed their chemistry together and was glad to see them figure things out. There was some spice in this book but it didn’t overcome the story. Also, no third act breakup. I will shout that from every rooftop when it happens because I think it is one of the best thing in a romance novel.
If you enjoy light, funny, contemporary romance books with hot celebs and antics then I highly recommend you give this book a read!
Star-Crossed Assistant is the fifth story in the Falling for Famous series. It was my first story from this author but won't be the last. I absolutely loved this story and couldn't put it down.
Sebastian is a famous movie star and Emma is his assistant. She works very hard at being there for Sebastian any time he needs her. She is secretly in love with him and has been for a while now. She realizes that she is never going to have the life she really wants since she doesn't have time to date so she decides to quit her job. Emma also has plans to start a business with her sister. Sebastian is devastated and refuses to allow her to leave. He tries many things, including raising her salary and promising her more time off. Emma refuses them all and sticks to her plan to leave.
Sebastian doesn't do well with Emma's declaration to leave him. He has been left by people too many times in his life. He decides to try to do what he can to get her to stay. He cares too much about her.
I loved how strong Emma was. She was a determined person and wanted to live her life differently. She believed in herself and her sister. I loved how Sebastian and Emma had such great banter. Their relationship was fun to read and watch it develop. This story is one you don't want to miss. I look forward to more from this talented author.
Nothing humbles a self-assured movie star faster than his assistant quitting—and making him realize she wasn’t just running his life, she was the best part of it.
I loved how confident and almost smug he was in his own world… until she walked away and suddenly none of it functioned the same without her. What made their dynamic work so well was that even when he was determined to get her back in his life, he was very pushy at first and she did cave in here and there—but she stayed firm on her decision to quit. I really liked that she held that line, because it made her boundaries feel real and important.
And as things progressed, he learned to listen, adjust, and respect what she needed, even when it wasn’t what he wanted.
What I loved most, though, was how sweet it was that they eventually allowed themselves to be vulnerable with each other. She especially learns that it’s okay to accept help and lean on him instead of always carrying everything alone—it made their connection feel really grounded and safe in such a natural way.
Their slow realization that they’d both been in love with each other the entire time was so satisfying—nothing felt rushed or forced, just a progression that made sense for them.
Overall, everything flowed really well—the relationship timeline, emotional progression, and character growth all felt cohesive and satisfying.
I really enjoyed this story and found myself hooked on Sebastian and Emma from the start.
Sebastian is such an interesting character. On the surface, he has the perfect Hollywood life, but underneath there’s a vulnerability that makes him compelling. I especially appreciated the ADHD representation. It felt thoughtful and balanced, highlighting both the challenges (like impulsivity and lack of filter) and the strengths, such as his hyperfocus and spontaneity. I’d love to see more neurodiverse characters written this way.
Emma was the perfect counterpart to him. I loved that she didn’t let him get away with anything and wasn’t afraid to be honest, even when it wasn’t what he wanted to hear. At the same time, her own guarded nature and vulnerability added real depth to her character.
The dynamic between them was a highlight. The banter was *chef’s kiss* and had me smiling throughout. I’m always a fan of dual POV, and this delivered perfectly, especially with all the yearning on both sides.
For me personally, the pacing felt a little slow in the middle, and I would have loved a bit more happening to keep the momentum going, but that’s very much down to personal preference.
Overall, this is a slow-burn, tension-filled romance with great character development, plenty of chemistry, and just the right touch of drama. Definitely one I’d recommend!
Star-Crossed Assistant by Sarah Deeham is the fifth book in the Falling for Famous series.
Sebastian Blake is a movie star, and Emma Reynolds has been his assistant for the past seven years. Her life basically revolves around him and his nonstop chaos, and honestly… she’s just had enough of his crazy antics. Lately she’s been talking with her sister about starting their own business, and that idea keeps growing on her.
So one day, after one stunt too many, she finally quits.
Sebastian can’t accept it at all because he doesn’t really know how to function without her in his life. At first, he tries everything to get her back as his assistant. But then he starts to see how happy her new job makes her, and how much she’s glowing. That’s when he changes his approach… instead of being her boss again, he decides he wants to be something else in her life. Her boyfriend.
This is a slow burn celebrity romance with tropes like forced proximity, opposites attract, and he falls first. It’s such a fun read, with a good balance of humor and some steamy moments. Both characters felt really likable to me, with flaws and personal struggles that made them feel more real.
Their banter was definitely my favorite part, and the vulnerable moments between them were so soft and heartwarming. I honestly had a hard time putting it down.
Star-Crossed Assistant was a cute boss/employee to ex-boss/ex-employee to lovers romance. Sebastian and Emma have worked together for 7 years. Throughout these years, Emma has remained employed as Sebastian's assistant until one day she has finally had enough of his BS. She gives her two week notice that she is quitting and Sebastian tries to woo her to stay. After an eventful night at a premiere that ended up with Emma going to the hospital, Emma finds herself fake engaged to Sebastian.
Throughout this book, there is a lot of banter between Sebastian and Emma as they try to navigate this new engagement. As this is a romance, one can only guess how it turns out. There were some unexpected plot twists outside of Emma and Sebastians romance that were quite interesting. I also liked the fact that Emma is a career driven woman who wants to be more than a celebrities assistant.
Overall, this book was a 4/5 for me. The spice content was about a 2/5 for me, but it didn't take away from the plot at all. I highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy reading about Hollywood romances, fake engagements, yearning, "fuck-it" moments, and "it's always been you" confessions.
Thank you to the Author Agency for the review copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Thank you NetGalley for this advance copy for me to review with my honest opinion.
I didn’t even realize there were other books in this series, but I look forward to reading them all!
There was great chemistry between Emma and her boss Sebastian, but what I appreciate is that nothing happened between them until she no longer worked for him. I didn’t want him to take advantage of his position.
I’m glad he was able to see himself and some of his selfish tendencies in a new way and to change for the better.
This slow burn romance had me so hooked, I read most of it on a road trip and couldn’t put it down. I usually fall asleep on road trips and get carsick from reading, but I put that all aside so I could keep reading.
Their long weekend in Napa Valley was so precious. I want to see this book come to life in movie form.
Some things I learned from this book:
Take care of yourself and don’t let your work/life balance become unhealthy.
Take the time to get to truly know a person and if you really love someone, you’ll compromise and think of their needs.
Sebastian Blake is one of the hottest stars in Hollywood. Emma Reynolds is his long-suffering assistant.
When Sebastian pushes Emma too far, she finally quits. She assumes they will now go their separate ways, but Sebastian is ready to fight for her. There's nothing he won't do to keep her, but is this still about the job, or does it go so much deeper than that?
The slow burn is absolutely glorious, and the chemistry between them is ridiculous, in the best possible way.
Sebastian is funny, sweet, and a bit of a naughty man child in a lot of ways. Emma is lively and spirited and does well keeping him in line. I also loved her ambition and drive. She's a wonderfully inspiring female main character.
I adored this story, from the beta read to the ARC, and I can't wait to buy the physical copy for my shelf. The good news is, there are more books in the series, and my TBR just got a bit bigger!
You should read this book if you love: - Open door romance (plenty of spice) - Celebrity romance - Boss x employee - Fake engagement - Slow burn - Forced proximity - Dual POV
Star-Crossed Assistant will be released on March 18.
Thank you to Sarah Deeham for the advanced complimentary copy of this book. The views and opinions expressed in this review are my own.
This was such a fun and enjoyable boss–employee romance! I really loved the characters in this book. They were both very lovable and felt so real, especially because they each had their own struggles to deal with. Watching their personal growth throughout the story was honestly one of my favorite parts.
I will always love a strong FMC, and Emma was exactly that. She knew what she wanted, wasn’t afraid to speak her mind, and stood her ground when it mattered. That made her such a great character.
My heart really went out to Sebastian. Behind the famous face and that bright, charming smile, there’s always a deeper story, and learning more about his past made me feel so sorry for him.
The story itself was a little chaotic at times, but in a good way. It kept things interesting and made sure the book was never boring. There was always something happening that kept me turning the pages.
The fake engagement trope was done really well and added a lot of fun moments to the story. I genuinely enjoyed this book and I’m already excited to read the other books in this series as soon as possible!
Thank you to NetGalley and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-Op for the opportunity to read this sweet-heat romance by Sarah Deeham. Being a personal assistant to a world-famous movie star can be challenging, but it’s also nonstop. Emma enjoys her job, if not the inconvenient attraction to her sexy-as-sin boss, but the 24-7 on-call routine is getting old after seven long years. Sebastian may be generous, funny, and kind-hearted, but he’s also a playboy, demanding, and often little more than an overgrown child who needs constant care, and she's done. It's time for Emma to take her future into her own hands and pursue her dreams-even if it means leaving behind the only man who's ever made her pulse race. She quit. Sebastian didn't realize how much he was taking Emma for granted until she gave him two weeks' notice. Now all he can think about is how he is going to convince her to stay, and being his assistant has nothing to do with his desperation. Both Emma and Sebastian have dark backgrounds that shape their closed-off hearts as adults. I loved Sebastian's awakening. His stay in her apartment was hilarious and sweet. Fun read!
