A slice of life story about a rookie vice squad detective set in 1937 Paris. He's straight-laced and has some strange family problems. Not for everyone. Lots of sex ad nudity.

'Vice Squad Volume 1' by Zidrou with art by Jordi Lafebre is about a fish out of water who joins a new department in his police squad.

The book is framed by it's present which is taking place in the shelters underneath Paris as the Germans are bombing the city. Aime Louzeau is reminded of his time working in the Vice Squad. He didn't want to join the department, and he gets coerced into it. He is so straitlaced and his fellow officers, as he finds out, are corrupted by the crimes they are supposed to be stopping. Will Aime stay vigilant and uncorrupted?

The story is probably not going to be for everyone, and I'm not sure I'm that fond of it, but the art and story work very well together. I'm reminded of the Philippe Noiret film, My New Partner in tone.

Muy buena historia sobre la brigada policial que perseguía la prostitución a mediados de siglo en Paris. Aparece la ocupación nazi de Paris pero solo como trasfondo, y por supuesto la corrupción de la policia pasandompor los oscuros secretos de la gente y algo de gastronomia francesa. Todo eso en el primer tomo solo!

Vice Squad is surely very Parisienne and bourgeois and dirty and suffocating at the same time. It's hard to say what the plot is and while reading this, I kept thinking that this makes no sense. For me it felt like the comic consists of smaller stories, these sequences, even though that probably wasn't the case as such or at least I had hard time connecting them together. The year is 1937 and Aimé Louzeau works as an inspector in Paris, but isn't really enjoying his job and thus asks for a transfer. Instead of killings and such, his work is now about following pimps and prostitutes. I really liked the free sex, dirtiness and the looming war behind everything. Survival is washed down with perverse and worn acts and only European comic makers can do it like this. You can even smell the cigarettes and the booze through the pages. The devil's fingerprints scene was pure marvelous. What I really liked about the comic is that it shows how nasty things have other sides and some of them can be beautiful and a choice worth to make.

The art is superb and the thin line art with deep and worn colors just scream for the 1930s. The structure of the comic isn't necessarily the best, but the art saves a lot. It's hard to follow what is happening and when, since the comic keeps skipping forward in weird spins. I do hope the second part will somehow wrap this up, since the comic is almost all over the place. Yet, at the same time Vice Squad is very thrilling and the art makes you follow it keenly, so Zidrou surely knows what he is doing.

Mêmes dessinateurs et scénaristes que les beaux étés mais cette bd est plus pesante. On suit un jeune à son arrivée à la brigade des moeurs et sa découverte de ses collègues et de son boulot. Il porte un passé assez chargé rempli de non dit. Ils représentent bien les attitudes et comportements grivois des policiers qui baignés dans l'univers de la débauche y participent allègrement aussi. A voir si le tome 2 donne un souffle de libération à l'histoire ou continue à perturber et mettre mal à l'aise.

This was clearly not for me.
I did not like the drawings, the story left me completely indifferent when it didn’t annoy me and I found the characters pretty damn irritating.

Zidrou does it again. Er valt niet veel actie te bespeuren in deze strip, het leest als een lange introductie van de personages. Dit wordt echter met zoveel charme, een snuifje humor en een flinke dosis poëzie gedaan dat ik niet anders kan dan van deze strip te houden, zelfs al zou het vervolg eventueel tegenvallen. Zidrou is toch wel DE stripauteur van het moment, gezien het aantal stripparels die we de laatste jaren van hem onder ogen kregen.
Één van die juweeltjes, 'Lydie' (zie : http://www.stripspeciaalzaak.be/PHP/b... ) was getekend door Lafebre. Toen ik de pagina's van 'La Mondaine' voor de eerste keer zag in mijn stripspeciaalzaak wist ik het al : dit is weer een feest voor het oog. Wat kan die kerel tekenen.
Samen met 'Les Folies Bergères' (zie : https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... ) heeft Zidrou twee van de beste strips van 2014 geschreven. Merci !

Una novela gráfica que no debéis dejar escapar de Jordo Lafebre y Zidrou: los autores de Lydie.

Según la Prefectura de Policía de París, 13.152 judíos fueron detenidos en julio de 1942 durante lo que ha pasado a la historia como la "redada del Velódromo de Invierno". 12.884 judíos fueron hacinados en el Velódromo. 4.051 niños. 5.802 mujeres. 3.051 hombres. Casi todos fueron deportados a campos de concentración. Menos de un centenar salieron con vida...

[La Espada en la Tinta]

Zidrou nos lleva a la Francia de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, exactamente al año 1944 –como se puede comprobar por la portada–, y en las primeras escenas nos muestra a un gran grupo de personas metidas en un refugio antibombas; no son solo ciudadanos, sino que también hay presente un soldado del ejército nazi que trata de mantener una conversación despreocupada con nuestro protagonista: el inspector Aimé Louzeau de La Mondaine.

Ondertussen al enkele meesterwerken van Zidrou achter de kiezen en deze moet er niet voor onder doen, al is het 'eerste deel'-gevoel wel sterk aanwezig: weinig plotontwikkeling, vooral veel karakterschets. Benieuwd hoe het afloopt.
