L'amie inattendue

Rate this book
Tu lui as sauvé la vie. Tu lui as donné un foyer.

Even as a young child SL Harker would conjure up stories to share with her family. That love of books and storytelling never went away, but her skills have improved since then.

As a lover of twisty fiction, her books are fast-paced domestic thrillers with a little spice added in.

This was a fairly average thriller with a predictable plot. I thought Claire was too gullible and the relationship between her and Vanessa happened too quickly. Unfortunately, a lot of things happened too quickly.

Man, this book hit close to home. As an INFJ, I'm a human lie detector but paradoxically, I'm also a protector. So Claire's actions in this book may have some readers shaking their heads, but to me, they made perfect sense.

Claire is getting her life together after discovering a string of affairs by her ex-husband. While jogging one evening, she encounters a young woman on a bridge about to jump into the frigid waters below. Claire talks the young woman Vanessa off the ledge and decides to temporarily take her under her wing. There is something about Vanessa that brings out Claire's maternal, protective side.

Claire ends up offering Vanessa a room in her empty beach house, and at first, the women live in quiet harmony together. But when someone throws a brick through a window and Vanessa's moods suddenly darken and shift, Claire begins to wonder who she has let into her home.

They say, "No good deed goes unpunished," and that proverb shapes this entire story. The more Claire digs, the more she finds, and that leaves her with one big question...just who in the hell is in her house? A fun, fast-faced domestic thriller. Available on Kindle Unlimited.

I’m not sure how to review this book. It was short, quick, entertaining read but I feel like the author just wrote whatever came into their head at the moment. It seemed to be a jumbled, chaotic, choppy mess.

Pretty average, did have me staying up late to finish it, but nothing special, dragged on a bit in the middle, guess I’m just disappointed with the ending?

The New Friend has all the ingredients of a good psychological thriller. In addition to being actually thrilling, it’s a well written suspenseful mystery; it has characters who have dark secrets in their past and who are not who they claim to be; and it has a surprise ending. In this case even a poignant one.

Claire, age 35, had been married to Nick for ten years, but recently divorced him because of his serial cheating. Despite Claire’s humble and unhappy upbringing dominated by a monstrously cruel father, the divorce settlement has left her a very wealthy woman. But now that she’s newly single, alone and lonely, Claire is haunted by her teenage pregnancy at age 15 and the baby daughter she gave up for adoption. Her daughter would now be about twenty years old.

During an early morning jog, Claire happens across a homeless girl named Vanessa about twenty years old about to commit suicide. Not sure if it’s her latent maternal instinct or a natural human empathy for someone so young and desperate, Claire offers Vanessa a lifeline, a place to live, and her friendship. It seems that Vanessa is a writer of romantic fiction and is a natural storyteller. Her past was also filled with unhappiness as she and her mother struggled to survive in a world where she never knew her father.

It was not until after living with Claire at her secluded beach house for a short time and beginning to heal that Vanessa mysteriously disappeared. Claire was convinced that she had been abducted. Will I have your attention if I tell you that the leading suspect was someone close to Claire? Or that Claire catches Vanessa lying to her and doesn’t know who or what to believe? It’s at that point that this tale of resentment and revenge races to a violent conclusion.

And if you savor a good story, it should be racing to your bookshelf.

Surprise Ending

I enjoyed this book very much. It was a slow burn through the first two thirds I’d say, but when it did start to wind up there was a lot of unexplained twists.

If I had anything at all negative to say it would only be that it seemed a bit rushed at the end. As thought time was of the essence to connect all the dots before it ended. I honestly wouldn’t have minded if it were longer. But perhaps that’s a sign of a good read.

This was my first SL Harker book. I’ll be looking for more from this author.

A bit of a slow starter, and would say a little predictable. It also felt kind of rushed, it had potential to be a really good story but I just feel like it wasn’t quite done right? Good writing though and I did enjoy the intensity towards the end, though wouldn’t call that a massive plot twist, probably an overdone one if anything

Tantalizing thriller that keeps you guessing until the end.

Claire, the lead character, is a woman with a big heart, maybe too much. Vanessa is the girl she prevents from committing suicide and welcomes her into her home. The plot keeps you on your toes as just when you think you have figured it out, something new takes place and sets your mind moving into a different direction. There are limited characters which makes the book easy to follow. The writing flows well and keeps you interested in the outcome of the story.

Never a boring point

This was a simple and mindless read that had me interested from start to finish. I love how easy to follow dialogues were, and how concise the author was in delivering this ‘slow burn’ that didn’t feel slow. I thought Claire’s naivety was a bit exaggerated but I guess it was not unrealistic especially because I could understand her reasoning. Despite a grammatical and typographical error here and there, overall this book is to the point, not lacking clarity, does not have cliffhangers, and the twists and surprises aren’t overly dramatic.

I honestly didnt know what to expect from this book. It was in a facebook group someone said it was free on Kindle and you better snag it while you can because it was such a good read. I am glad I did snag it when I did and read it. It was for sure a good read! Was it my all time favorite no but I def. couldnt put the book down. I wondered what was going on.

There were alot of parts of the book that just seemed confusing, like why are you telling me this information? what does this have to do with anything. and then finally it all was put together at the end. I didnt expect the ending and that part i loved about it. I think if you want a good read, fast read, and a book that leaves you like what?!?! I didnt expect that. then read it!!!

I love thriller novels, however this one just didn’t …thrill me.

Claire as a protagonist just seemed to be too naive and too willing to fill the void of her divorce right from the start. While this may have been the author’s intent, it made Claire more of a daft character rather than one someone could empathize with.

I feel like this book also had too many different tragedy plot lines, none of which in my opinion, added substantially to the book. I could get behind the long lost adopted daughter red herring, but the plot lines and red herrings with Nick and Robbie just overall seemed unnecessary and poorly drawn out (especially at the end, Robbie’s excuse for being a complete pig was that Vanessa told him that’s what Claire liked? Seems like a cop out to me). Nick trying to get back with Claire after his new girlfriend dumped him also seemed fairly unrealistic. The man has cheated on Claire countless times. Why would he so willingly try to win her back? I didn’t believe for a minute that either of the men were guilty of the attacks or kidnapping of Vanessa.

I feel like Claire’s family story line could have been drawn out much better as well. I wanted more of her relationship with her mom. I wanted to see what happened after the fire and her father’s passing. But instead all we got were short snippets leading up to the fire and revealing her teenage pregnancy (which in my opinion, the mother was WAY too calm and cool with that as well).

When I read thrillers, I want to read something that makes me think. I want to read about characters that are realistic and that I could care about. Unfortunately the characters in this story just didn’t hit either of those marks, realistic or in depth.

A great 5 * read by a new to me author.

********************************

You saved her life. You gave her a home. You know nothing about her…

Divorcee Claire is learning to begin again after discovering her ex-husband's affair. The last thing she expects to find is a young woman precariously balanced on the edge of a bridge. Vanessa is homeless, and desperate, lacking options in her life. Claire takes Vanessa under her wing, saving her from the icy-cold waters of the churning river below.

Vanessa is grateful to Claire, especially when she offers her a room in her empty beach house in a quaint coastal town.

The two women find they have a lot in common and enjoy each other’s company immensely. Vanessa finds a job in the local town, and Claire takes up sketching again.

But their harmony is short-lived. When a brick comes crashing through a window, Claire must confront Vanessa about her past.

Did this sweet young girl bring something dark into Claire’s life? What if Vanessa has a hidden agenda?

I hovered between 2 and 3 stars. So, 2.5 rounded down.

A newly divorced woman, Claire, is out jogging one morning when she sees a young woman, Vanessa, about to jump off a bridge. She saves the woman, takes her for coffee and then to her house for shower and food, and then finally decides, since Vanessa is homeless, to invite her to stay in Claire's empty beach house. Claire got the house in the divorce but she doesn't use it because it's big, isolated and hadn't ever appealed to her before.

Claire then also moves to the beach house and together she and Vanessa become a fun, close partnership. Vanessa reminds her of the woman her daughter would now be who she gave up for adoption 20 years earlier. Meanwhile, Vanessa claims to be an author and using the time and space to start writing her next book.

Because of some vandalism and other disturbing incidents, Claire ramps up the security on the house and hires full time guard, Connor. But then her ex husband gets involved as a target of Vanessa and soon Claire begins to wonder who she let into her house after all.

If you can suspend belief that someone would invite into their home a young woman who they really know nothing about, giving them access to your house and your life, this is an interesting mystery. Unfortunately for me, I couldn't suspend that belief and it kept creeping into my mind as I read, and so the ending was not as big a surprise as the author most likely intended it to be.

There is growth for Claire, and some peace by the end of the story.

This was an enjoyable book that I read in one sitting. It did have an unexpected twist at the end, but overall it just didn't wow me. Hence the 3 star rating-just average.
Claire didn't have a career-she was just a wife supporting her husband Nick who had repeatedly cheated on her. Now that they are divorced she is trying to figure out what to do with her life. On a morning jog she encounters Vanessa whom she talks down from jumping off a bridge and they develop an unlikely friendship. I felt like this all happened too quickly. Claire talked her down too easily. She believed Vanessa's version of her life very readily and took her into her home to live. There were some inconsistencies in Vanessa's story that didn't register with Claire. There was a sense of unease throughout the book, knowing something was going to go wrong but not imagining the twists at the end.

Claire stops Vanessa from ending her life, and invites Vanessa to stay with her. After receiving a few advice, Claire decides to see if she can find online information about Vanessa but finds nothing. There seems nothing untoward about Vanessa herself, so Claire forgets about her research. But this proves to be an issue when weird events occur and it might be worth knowing who Vanessa really is.

The book is written in the present tense, so readers read the narrative in real-time. A personal pleasant way to read since nothing in the future can be foreseen and readers learn what happens at the same time as the protagonist.

I enjoyed reading this weird novel.

It started out Claire Callow saving a young girl from jumping in the ocean. She talks the girl from jumping in the ocean and talks her into coming to live with her at her Beach House. The girl's name is Vanessa Bird or so she tells Claire and Claire believes her.

But all hell breaks loose when she makes Claire move up to her Beach house where Vanessa has been living alone for a while. Vanessa gets a job in a diner on the Island.

Vanessa is making friends and getting to know the neighbor very well. Claire enjoys having her in the house with her because has someone to eat with her and she is not as lonely as she was!

Very well written thriller

The book was the perfect length. Author did a great job in describing the scenes. I felt like I was watching a movie. I really liked the character build up that helped in understanding the personalities. It really helped me care about what happens to the characters.
While reading this book, I started looking at vacation rentals near a beach. It also made me crave for some good food.
Another thing I liked about this book is that as a thriller fan you will have several guesses but you won't be able to pinpoint at one. The story had so many paths it could have taken.
It's a quick read. Give it a try if you like thrillers.

What would or how would you know if you would've turned out to be or not to be if your life was different than the life you have now. Could you really say that you would or wouldn't have taken the path you've taken or not? The what ifs and should've could've are endless. The characters are parallel, yet there stories are written on the same wavelength. The book is good and it's very enthralling at times and keeps you wondering about Claire's past, and Vanessa's motives.

fly through this book because it’s so easy to read. it’s fast paced and you kinda get an idea of where the story is going but still intriguing at the same time. there’s no “wow” factor on the plot twist but still enjoyable nonetheless.

also, i’m convinced this will never happen to me in real life because the chance of me jumping with the person i see self-offing themselves is higher than me helping them, let alone have them stay in my own home 🫠😅
