not my cup of ☕️

This was my first time reading this author, and honestly, I had high expectations. I started with this book, though now I’m not sure if I should have begun with an earlier one in the series—or a different title altogether. The trigger warnings at the beginning had me mentally prepared to question why I might enjoy something so dark. But surprisingly, the book wasn’t dark at all—it was actually very mild.
To be honest, I found it a bit boring and had to push myself to keep reading. The alternating past and present timelines felt overdone and ended up detracting from the story rather than adding depth. I’m also confused by the high ratings this book has received.
I might give this author another try with a different book, but unfortunately, this one just didn’t work for me.

deja vu

These books are all the same. The last 4 books by JJ had the same kidnapping story. Time to switch it up!

🥃 ARC Review: Forbidden Pregnancy by Jamila Jasper
Rating: 3.25/5 stars
Vibe: Dark, Gritty, Intense, Emotional
Spice Level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ (A dark mafia power-play featuring "breeding" tropes and a relentless, unhinged hero.)

Reviewed by The Bourbon Sipping Bibliophile

If you’re looking for a romance that walks the razor's edge of obsession and danger, Forbidden Pregnancy is a high-proof shot of dark mafia intensity. Jamila Jasper returns to the Buffalo Italian Mob Family with a second installment that proves some fires never truly burn out—they just wait for the right moment to consume everything.

🥃 The Pour The story centers on Myra, a teacher who wakes up in a literal nightmare: tied to a bed in a stranger’s mansion with a contract she doesn’t remember signing. Enter Michael Corsini—a ruthless, one-eyed mafia enforcer who is as wealthy as he is unhinged. He claims Myra agreed to carry his child, but the truth is buried in a tragic history rooted ten years in the past.

After a decade of pining and a brutal separation forced by Michael’s racist, patriarch father, a "chance" meeting brings them back together. Michael is determined to claim Myra’s body and her womb, creating a new legacy that defies his father’s blood-soaked rules.

🥃 The High Notes
The Devotion: There is something magnetically "tragic and beautiful" about Michael’s decade-long obsession. He views Myra as "too good for him," yet he’s willing to burn down the entire Corsini empire to keep her.

Generational Conflict: This isn’t just a romance; it’s a war against legacy. The struggle against Pino Corsini’s refusal to accept an interracial union adds a layer of genuine suspense and "societal resistance" that makes the eventual HEA feel hard-earned.

The Past/Present Narrative: The back-and-forth timeline builds a necessary bridge between who they were as young lovers and the hardened people they’ve become, providing much-needed context for their intense connection.

🥃 The Low Notes While the chemistry is "magnetic," the execution can feel "drama that is all over the place." The "Buffalo Family" universe is expanding rapidly, and the sheer number of POVs and side characters makes it feel like the story is "jumping all over the place," sometimes detracting from the central couple. Additionally, readers of the first book may find the plot beats—the kidnapping, the forced contract, and the meddling sister—feel a bit like a "duplicate" of previous stories. The pacing of the alternating timelines, while informative, can occasionally detract from the momentum of the present-day stakes.

🌺 Overall Forbidden Pregnancy is an "entertaining" exploration of a man who will go to impossible lengths for the woman he loves. It’s a reflection on "courage, identity, and the cost of choosing love" in a world that doesn’t always welcome it. While it hits familiar dark mafia notes, the sincere tenderness between Michael and Myra keeps the reader emotionally invested.

The Bourbon Sipping Bibliophile's Drink Pairing
🥂The Buffalo Bitter-End (A Spiced Blackberry & Basil Rum Smash)

Since we are moving away from both bourbon and gin, I’ve transitioned this pairing to a Dark Spiced Rum. The molasses notes of the rum perfectly capture the heavy, "thick" atmosphere of the Buffalo mafia setting, while the muddled fruit and herbs mirror the "bruised" but beautiful history between Michael and Myra.

The Buffalo Bitter-End Ingredients

2 oz Dark Spiced Rum: (The "Michael" element—rich, complex, and carrying a heavy "kick" of intensity)

1 oz Fresh Lemon Juice: (The "Trauma" element—representing the tart, stinging reality of their ten-year separation)

1/2 oz Simple Syrup: (The "Myra" element—the sweetness he’s pined for since they were young)

5 Fresh Blackberries: (The "Inky Secrets" element—representing the dark mafia world and the hidden truths of the Corsini family)

3 Large Basil Leaves: (The "Italian Heritage" element—savory, aromatic, and deeply rooted in their Buffalo roots)

Splash of Ginger Beer: (The "Explosive Chemistry" element—to add a spicy effervescence to their reunion)

The Method:

In a sturdy rocks glass, muddle the blackberries, basil leaves, and simple syrup until the berries are completely "broken" and the basil is fragrant.

Add the spiced rum and lemon juice, then fill the glass with crushed ice.

Stir vigorously with a long spoon, pulling the dark berry juice and basil bits through the ice.

Top with a splash of ginger beer for a sharp, spicy finish.

Garnish with a blackberry skewered by a basil sprig. Serve while reflecting on how "sometimes the one who breaks you... is the only one who can put you back together.".

2.25 Stars. (BW/WM). Kindle Edition $2.99/334 page e-book.
SETTING: Modern day Buffalo NY and Pittsburgh PA.
MAIN CHARACTERS:
1. Michael Corsini, male lead, is the enforcer for the Corsini Family and later becomes the second in command after killing his father.
2. Myra Geralynn, female lead, is a teacher of foreign languages, a 24-year-old virgin and the love of Micheal's life.
3. Cosima "CC" Corsini is Michael's 15-year-old sister being tutored by Myra in French. Twenty-five CC will drug Myra and Michael resulting in their having sex and becoming pregnant.
4. Luigi and Delphine Taviani is Michael's friend, Leandro's eldest son and his wife.
5. Leandro Taviani is the head of the Mob Family.
6. Pino Corsini is Michael's father and Leandro's underboss.

This is not a romantic story. Italian Mob Families discouraged interracial romantic relationships with black people. Pino Corsini was adamant about his sons not interacting with black women and rigorously enforced. When Pino discovered that Michael was dating and in love with Myra, he secretly had her beaten and threatened her life. Ten years later, Michael and Myra meet again and are drugged and locked away together. They make a baby and rekindle their romance. CC tells Michael about what their father did to Myra and Michael kills him. Myra and Michael marry and Leandro turns all of Pino assets over to Michael to include the underboss position.

Michael Corsini is a dark, complicated mobster with one eye and unresolved feelings for his younger sister CC’s former tutor, Myra Brent. For ten years, he pined for her while at a loss as to why she left him without a trace. Little did he know that his involvement with his family caused his father to attack Myra just for being herself. The ripple effect of this attack caused so much trauma that it took Michael and Myra 10 years to see each other again, and it was just a chance meeting.
Michael is really intense and dead set on winning back Myra’s trust and love. Myra tries to fight the magnetic pull from Michael, but it’s almost impossible to resist. And Pino, Michael’s father, is ruthless. It was such a rollercoaster ride trying to see how this would turn out. Overall, this was an entertaining read.

Michael and Myra

Here I thought Luigi story was interesting lol. But I think Michael topped that. The history with these two is so cute when they meet but then when time goes and she leaves for reasons unknown (until you dive in). But FATE had other plans for them. Michael knew he wanted Myra and he was going to have her. When she has a run in with Cosima(CC), Myra did not expect the outcome she did when she came across these siblings after 12 years. Without full detail, you already know how the Patriarch feels about the situation. Michael will do what he has to do to protect what’s his, and protect(by any means) is what he does. Hope you enjoy this book as much as I did! HEA guaranteed🍍

Deceit Can Run Deep! 🍍

At its heart is a romance that blossoms with sincerity and tenderness, made all the more powerful by the cultural and racial barriers it dares to cross. The chemistry between the leads is magnetic.

What elevates the story is its portrayal of generational conflict. The father’s opposition isn’t just personal; it’s symbolic of a broader societal resistance to change. His escalating hostility adds a layer of suspense that keeps the reader emotionally invested, even as the couple’s bond offers moments of warmth and hope.

This isn’t just a romance, it’s a reflection on courage, identity, and the cost of choosing love in a world that doesn’t always welcome it.

Way too many characters to keep up with. It takes more time to read who’s connected to whom than it does to finish the story itself.

This is a duplicate of the first book in this series (Forbidden Surrogate). FMC having an ex that left her for another woman that she knew personally, a meddling little sister, forced contract under the influence of alcohol/drugs, headed to some lake, unknown location to keep FMC locked up, mafia family not liking black people… it’s literally the same as the first book just different characters.

I did like the back and forth between the past and present, it lead up to where they are now. What I didn’t like were all the different POV’s besides the MMC and FMC. It made it seem like the story was jumping all over the place.

Pass the Popcone…

I truly enjoyed this episode of The Buffalo Family. And even the Philadelphia Family is a page and head turner.

From jump street, Michael & Myra’s struggles are not of the ordinary. No. The chemistry between Michael & Myra’s story is not just for themselves. No their entire existence is for the right to Love.

And to find out the little teaser trailer, I’m truly looking forward to seeing Renzo get his come-up’ns…

This issss goooooodddd. Please pass the popcone…

Beautiful Story

This was a beautiful story. I love the fact that Michael loved Myra for over a decade and never gave up on that love and thought she was too good for him. I like that CC always thought that Myra was made to be in her family and was good for her brother. I love the fact that Michael would go to the ultimate level to protect Myra and keep her and their baby in his life forever. I love that he would burn the world down to prove to her that his love for her was true, and that he would be there for her above all and forever. This was a truly beautiful story and proved that real love is meant to last through all.

Once again, my new obsession with Buffalo, NY and it's families has taken over. Michael Corsini piqued my interest with his involvement with Luigi Taviani in Forbidden Surrogate, but reading this story about him, his family, and the relationship with his father and sister makes the Taviani's seem like the Brady family. Michael and Myra and their romance is both tragically beautiful and intensely frustrating at moments. The story was riveting and once I started I could not put it down. Jamila Jasper has once again renewed my faith in fictional men who will go to impossible lengths for the woman they love. I cannot wait for the next book in this series! 🍍

I loved this so much.
I thought Michael was sitting in on CC's lectures because he had to, not knowing he was into the tutor, Myra.
He was hot, but Myra didn't care until she realized that he wasn't so bad.
The first kiss they shared was far from okay. she felt sparks.
When they had the chance...yeah. spice 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ with some dub con🌶️

when she said she didn't find him attractive, because he was white. This is what he says: “Okay,” I whisper. “Then close your eyes and think of Denzel Washington while I enjoy your sweet ass pussy, because I missed you.”
lol crazy right?

Cc needs therapy after pulling that crazy stunt. I enjoyed this book so much as well as the forbidden factor.🔥🔥🔥

Michael for his daughter is the guardian for his sister CC. His father hires a tutor for his daughter named Myra. She is a graduate student who tutors to earn extra money while in school. Michael is attracted to her and works to get her attention. Something happens that separates the two for 12 years and CC brings the two back together, surprise, surprise. CC drugs them both and they wake up in bed together with a signed contract to be together. All I can say that the roller coaster relationship began.

part 2

Nice follow up to the first book. In fact I enjoyed Luigi more in this book than in his own. At first I thought the set up was far too close to the first book, I really am going to need the sisters of these families to get out of the traffic game. I did like that the fmc and mmc had history and how it unfolded through out the book. I look forward to the next book and I hope one of these girls really does make a mob boss kneel.

Jamila Jasper is definitely one of my favorite authors!!!!

This book was soooo good!!!! I LOVED that it was set in Western NY (give us one book in Rochester, PLEASE?!?). There were moments where I laughed and moments when I was on the edge of my seat!! Can’t wait to read the next installment in the series.

The women in this family ...

Like the first book, the mob women do what they think is best for themselves and their brothers' lives are changed forever. This time, there is a familiar face caught in the trap as well and this man has no problem with that at all. Let's get it on ... There's passion, drama, betrayal, kidnapping that is worthy of a soap opera. Enjoy!

🍍 What a story. I enjoyed this story. The depth of love he had for her. Wow. I'm glad she didn't let her past trauma keep her from the unshakable love he had for her. Well done. Bring on Renzo

Not Bad…

But this book could have ended way before it did it felt like the author was adding stuff to make the book longer and it made it kinda boring. But it’s not bad I hope the other books are better.

This...

Storyline was kinda allover the place with constant recap about previous crimes committed, when the real crux of the problem could have been told to move the story to deeper plots...decent read...
