The last thing Delphine remembers is the burn of a clean shot of whiskey.

When she wakes, she’s bound and at the mercy of Luigi Taviani — a ruthless Italian-American crime boss with a reputation for getting what he wants at any cost.

He insists she signed a contract agreeing to become his surrogate. He claims he has the proof and won't let her walk away from this forbidden contract.

Delphine has every reason to fight him. She’s just an ordinary Black woman from Buffalo who works at a library, with nothing that should tie her to this man or his violent world. Luigi sees something more in her — something he refuses to let slip through his fingers.

He's possessive. Relentless about what he wants. And he wants her... Delphine knows she should run away from his dangerous blue-eyes.

Yet the deeper she’s pulled into Luigi’s dark orbit, the harder it is to deny the dangerous attraction blazing between them.

Disappointed

I waited patiently for this book because I really love the author. To say im disappointed is an understatement. I understand that she wanted to make a so-called relatable female, but she failed. She made her a pushover with no backbone. She couldn't stand up for herself at no point even after being drugged and kidnapped by his siste Angela. Her family was not supportive throughout her pregnancy. They ghosted her even her parents kept away with no contact. Then you had them in her wedding as braidmaid and all other BS. She couldn't even stand up to her best friend who slept with her ex. None of this is relatable. I'm sorry. You made her obey every command out of fear. Seriously, are you ok? This book had potential but failed miserably. I get the Italian family not wanting half breed, especially black into their family, which is true with many southern Italian. As a black woman, you made us completely weak in this book. You made her a lap dog even for her own baby daddy. We need to stop making these weak female characters already. I get why she did not expose the twins because she knew later on she would be able to blackmail them. The girl was afraid to talk back 95% of the time. You made it to easy for her to forgive Angela who fake befriend her to drug and kidnapped for her brother to knock her up which he had no idea of his sister actions. Come on, jamila, you are the freaking queen of these types of books, which is why im disappointed. If the others will be like this, im sorry I can't continue this series

I have read most of JJ's books. This book felt forced and extremely repetitious. The main characters either say or think the same things over and over. Delphine is seriously the weakest female character she has ever written, which is really sad because I believe she is also the oldest. Does this mean that supposedly strong black females just become weak willed saps as they age in her opinion? I sure hope not. We should all gain wisdom and make better decisions as we age, rather than just going whichever way the wind blows.

🥃 ARC Review: Forbidden Surrogate: Dark Mafia BWWM Romance by Jamila Jasper
Title: Whiskey, Wakes, and Wives: The Buffalo Mob’s Explosive Contract.
Rating: 4/5 stars Spice Level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ (A five-alarm fire. Trust me, the mafia’s secret weapon here is heat.) Reviewed by The Bourbon Sipping Bibliophile

Let me tell you, this book is not a slow burn; it’s a high-octane car chase through the darkest streets of Buffalo, and it ends with a high-stakes, forbidden contract. As a reader who lives for this kind of dark romance, I can confidently say Jamila Jasper delivered the over-the-top, possessive alpha, the high-stakes mafia setting, and the explosive BWWM chemistry that I crave.

🥃 The Pour
The premise grabbed me instantly: Delphine, a hard-working librarian, wakes up bound and at the mercy of Luigi Taviani, a ruthless Italian-American crime boss. The hook—she supposedly signed a contract to be his surrogate—is pure, audacious drama. I loved that even Luigi was thrown by his sister Angela's unhinged methods. It sets the stage for instant, undeniable chaos.

Luigi is everything I want in a mafia hero: intense, controlling, and instinctively knows that Delphine is the one he wants to keep, regardless of his family's expectations. Delphine starts off passive, which I admit was a little frustrating at first. She seemed to just go along to survive, which I can understand given the situation. But her eventual thaw, driven by Luigi's shocking, caretaker moments and their smoking chemistry, made the attraction feel desperately earned.

This story moves at a breakneck pace, throwing the couple into constant drama. The multiple points of view were a solid move, setting up the foundation for the interconnected standalones that I'm already looking forward to.

🥃 The High Notes
Alpha Supremacy: Luigi is prime mafia material. He’s obsessed, protective, and the dirty talk alone is worth the price of admission. I lived for his fierce, immediate protectiveness.

Off-the-Charts Spice: The reviews aren't lying. The heat and "breeding" dirty talk are absolutely scorching. This book earns every single chili.

High-Stakes Romance: The forbidden nature of Delphine and Luigi's relationship—due to his family’s expectations and the highly illegal start—gives the story real danger and emotional stakes.

🥃 The Low Notes
If I had to pour a complaint, it would be the pacing. While the story is fast and exciting, the development of Delphine and Luigi’s emotional connection felt too quick. Their genuine feelings seemed to click into place a bit too easily amidst all the mayhem. Also, Delphine's repeated forgiveness of Angela’s actions might test some readers’ patience—I would have liked to see her push back harder sometimes. The ending also felt like a rushed "happy for now," but it definitely left me ready for the next book.

🌺 Overall
Forbidden Surrogate is a wild, intense ride. It's dark, it’s explicit, and it's exactly what I reach for when I want a romance with zero hesitation and maximum impact. If you like your heroes completely unhinged and your heroines pulled into a world of sin by undeniable chemistry, grab a shot of whiskey and dive into the Taviani family chaos.

The Bourbon Sipping Bibliophile's Drink Pairing
I chose this drink because it pays tribute to Delphine's memory of a clean shot of whiskey, the dark world of the mob, and the forbidden nature of their attraction.

2 oz Rye Whiskey
0.5 oz Amaro (a dark Italian herbal liqueur, such as Montenegro or Averna)
0.75 oz Fresh Lemon Juice
0.5 oz Spicy Simple Syrup (simple syrup infused with chili or black pepper)
Rim: Generous Pinch of Smoked Salt
Garnish: Thick Blood-Orange Slice and a single Black Cherry

The Method (Mixing the Forbidden):
Rub the rim of a rocks glass with a lemon wedge and dip it into the smoked salt.
Combine the Rye Whiskey, Amaro, Lemon Juice, and Spicy Simple Syrup in a shaker.
Fill with ice and shake hard until well-chilled.
Strain the mixture into the prepared glass over a large, fresh ice cube.
Garnish: A thick, blood-orange slice or a single black cherry, submerged in the drink like a secret.

Forbidden Surrogate by Jamila Jasper is the first mafia romance by this prolific author that I have read in a while. The last series I read featured that unhinged Pagonis family, that family makes Luigi and his kin folk look like choir boys in comparison (but I digress😊). Luigi Taviani opens the Buffalo Mob Family series, and he has two problems; he has been tasked with watching his younger sister Angela (like he is her babysitter) and producing an heir as ordered by his ruthless father. Quiet hard-working Delphine is out on-the-town anticipating a stress-free evening when she strikes up an enjoyable conversation with Angela who is out with her handsome but intimidating brother. When Delphine surfaces again, she is in the care of Luigi (Angela a bit) and she has signed a contract to act as Luigi’s surrogate! Luigi is just as gobsmacked as Delphine but quickly makes the best of the unexpected situation. In fact, he makes the best of the situation over and over again. As with most of Ms. Jasper’s male characters Luigi is over the top, possessive and a tad (well, more than a tad) controlling. Delphine seemed to just go along to keep the peace; she was passive but eventually came to genuinely care for volatile Luigi. The couple doesn’t have a lot of time bonding and getting to know each other as they are dodging problems, complications, and just plain old mayhem. Luigi quickly and instinctively knows that Delphine is the one even though she does not meet the ethnic profile his father expected. Can he keep her safe when his family and the other FAMILES are against them? The story ends on a happy for now note, and readers and the couple are aware that more upheaval is coming! The story’s construction was interesting in that readers are allowed to see viewpoints from other characters, Angela, Renzo, Michael and Myra. Myra and Michael are featured in the next story Forbidden Pregnancy, while we get Renzo’s story in Forbidden Property. Bottom line, I enjoyed this story, parts of it was funny and it had some poignant moments; but I would have liked more of the “why” in Luigi and Delphine’s relationship development (more than that smoking chemistry😊, but he was a bit of a caretaker, so maybe that softened her heart).

Favorite Lines:
I reach my hand out to help Delphine up and glares at it like I slipped it between my ass cheeks first.
I toss and turn all night, her absence in my bed was strong as if we had been together for years.
I don’t know what emotional reaction I expected this news to provoke in me, but it wasn’t this insane protectiveness.
It’s not me. It’s my father. It’s my uncle Pino. It’s our entire family and how it’s built.

BWWM 🩶
Mafia ❤️‍🔥
Forbidden love 😍
Touch her & 💀
He falls first 🥰

So this was my first BWWM read & also my first book from this author, I truly enjoyed this. The spice was everything to me & the dirty talk of impregnating the FMC, SIGN ME UP!! 🤤 What they thought was just another night out in the town, turned their lives around & gave them a run for their money!

Luigi Taviani (MMC) has a dirty mouth & knows how to use it in many ways! After his first encounter with Delphine I immediately knew he was going to fall head over heels for her & he did. At first he was reluctant to it but his desire for her was stronger than his pride. Luigi gives protective, possessive, & obsessed vibes & I loved him for that.

Delphine (FMC) gave me two vibes either she was quiet or she would be overthinking certain things throughout the book. With this though she was not a bad character. I wished we would’ve gotten more from her character but I liked her overall.

I’m big on side characters & I really liked Angela even though she could be a lot sometimes 😂. Jamila Jasper did an amazing job explaining every trigger warning/tough topics in the beginning of the book. While I don’t have any triggers, it’s nice to see these were given in detail by her, as some may not find this book to be to their liking.

Kidnapped? Maybe. In Love? Definitely. 🤭

Luigi? Whew. He’s intense in all the ways I secretly love—possessive, protective, and not afraid to claim what’s his. He might be a little unhinged, but somehow that made him even more interesting to me. Jamila really nailed his character.

Delphine was super relatable. As a Black woman, I felt her when she described herself as “insignificant.” That part hit me. What she thought was just a random night out turned into something she never saw coming. And even in the chaos, she stayed smart and strong.

There’s a twist later in the story that helps everything make more sense (don’t worry—I won’t spoil it). But I will say this: Jamila does a great job giving you a heads-up about the dark themes upfront, so you know what you’re getting into. I appreciated that.

Writing-wise, it was solid. I’m picky about grammar, and I barely noticed any issues. The story flowed well and kept me locked in from start to finish.

Bottom line? I might need to take a trip to Buffalo to find my own Luigi 😂. It’s not your typical love story, and that’s what makes it so good. Dark, obsessive, a little wild—and absolutely worth the read. Definitely one of my favorites from Jamila, right up there with Biker’s Tribute.

This book started off really good, but it started to fall towards the end. The different POV’s from multiple people out of nowhere was confusing and didn’t need to happen. It pulls away from the initial story.

I wasn’t a fan of Delphine. There’s nothing worse when the FMC is such a pushover and just allows everyone to tell her what to do and she just … does it. No fight back, no speaking her mind, he tells her to get on her knees and she doesn’t fight it, she just opens her mouth to this man she doesn’t even know from Adam or Eve.

The redundant narrative regarding black people and their color became old. We don’t need to be reminded every other paragraph that yes she’s black and how Italians hate black people. It made me not want to finish the story.

And the abrupt ending? What happened when Luigi went to Pittsburgh??? They had their wedding night and then it jumps into a completely different story. It didn’t make sense. The story had so much potential and just fell flat.

I’m so happy to be back! A happy 4.5 star read!!

It’s been awhile since I’ve read a Jamilla Jasper book and I don’t know what took me so ong! I’m never disappointed.
This one might have been THE spïciest one yet! I mean wow!!! The absolute HEAT between Luigi and Delphine was fire! The scenes in this battle ok scorched my eye balls and rocked my soul. This story had it all! Intrigue, heat, passion and great secondary characters. Just wow!!
All in all another amazing read by Jamilla. My only gripe was the word misplacement at times and jumping from one person talking to another person talking without showing a change in character. Other than that? This was so good and I am into the next right now!!

This was so good!

Luigi and Delphine were like oil and water in the very beginning but it didn’t matter because they were combustible and hot for each other. Their personalities clashed however, they had chemistry and it took them a while to admit they had real feelings especially since race was always a bone of contention for Luigi’s family and his culture. I felt that subject was handled well and there was pushback from Luigi’s sisters, especially Angela who became a true friend to Delphine. I’m a fan of this book and I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

Delphine goes to a bar to buy a drink and bury her sorrows for being betrayed by her ex-boyfriend and ex-friend. She meets a lady named Angela who starts up a conversation and buys her a drink. The next thing she knows she wakes up in a car with Angela and Her brother Luigi. Delphine finds out Angela drugged her and she signed a contract to be a surrogate for Luigi. He tells her she has to honor the terms and let the breeding begin. While she is being held at a cabin Delphine and Luigi start catching feelings for each other and the fire begins. Buckle you seatbelt for this ride.

A Great Start

I loved Delphines and Luigi‘s story. I love how they both tried to fight their feelings for each other and neither one wanted to admit how they really felt about one another. I like how Angela stepped in and forced them together, even if her methods were illegal. In the end, Angela got the sister that she wanted, and Delphine got the best friend that she needed. This was a beautiful story, as is all of Jamila‘s stories. Way to go. I can’t wait for the next one.

a great read

Read this ion one sitting. It was a great story. The female lead was exactly who I thought her to be by the description of her physical appearance and the male lead was dominant and caring. While there were some pieces missing like how the female lead came to be in the bar where she met the male lead, the interconnected story was a treat.

Not what I was expecting.

Having read most of Ms. Jasper's books this one might just be my least favorite. The main characters felt forced on me... I don't know how to explain it but neither Delphine nor Luigi had enough depth for me to properly dissect. It felt like an introduction to the series rather than their own story.

It’s a dark romance for sure. She’s a push over I wish there was more push back but the smug as always was amazing and it’s giving all the dark romance vibes you need. I do wish the book was longer though like I want more of their love story. 3 1/2 out of 5 stars

A night of drinking turns into long-term commitment—and an unexpected love story.

I adored the dynamic between Angela and Luigi, but even more so the raw, real sisterhood between Angela and Delphine. Complex family ties, quiet emotional tension, and messy-but-meaningful connections made this a standout.

Medium spice but rich in feeling. Perfect if you love unconventional romances with heart.

Kinky mafia man

This mafia man goes from not wanting to fulfill his father's request for an heir to rushing to the finish line once the black queen is "chosen" for him. They both have crazy families but his almost seem easier to accept because hers is less in the picture. Love the preview of the next book in the series and the ending was satisfying.
