Dukes Gone Dirty #2

The Earl’s Tempting Ward

Rate this book
This surly earl expects obedience from his fiery new ward. What he gets is nothing but trouble.

The fire that claimed the Earl of Foster's father and brother left him scarred in every sense of the word. But despite the guilt and his mother’s hatred, Benedict took on the duties that came with the earldom. Including looking after his new ward—the orphaned daughter of his mother’s closest friend.

He expects a timid child to arrive on his doorstep, not a tantalizingly gorgeous young lady in need of a husband. The irritating beauty manages to rile more than just his temper, and he soon finds himself seeking her out for arguments that inevitably end with his lips on hers. His hands on her body. It isn’t right. It’s not what she deserves. But the temptation is too much. The only honorable solution is to marry the girl himself.

Only, Philippa has secrets of her own, and her past has her living a nightmare. She knows what her guardian has in store for her, but she's not looking for marriage to a good man. And despite his growls and his threats, Benedict is good. Better than he knows.

Better than she deserves.

This was a more intense read than I had expected. I must say that I am coming to enjoy these little stories by Bella Moxie.

Highlights
- Quite an emotional plot. It was not a playful guardian-ward romance but painful, poignant, and tender.
- I loved that the characterisations were flipped. The heroine was the one to mess up & run and then consequently grovel to the hero. Very, very unique.
- Phillipa & Benedict were so similar and evenly matched. Both of them were guilt-ridden, burdened and misunderstood, all the while they were struggling with their circumstances. I was glad they found each other.
- They had great chemistry & the sweetest connection.

My Recommendation
A quick, enjoyable read for sure. Free on KU.

I received an advance ebook copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for review.

The Earl’s Tempting Ward by Bella Moxie is the second book of the Dukes Gone Dirty series. Benedict, Earl of Foster has been scarred by the fire that killed his older brother and father. Benedict did not expect to gain the title, but he has taken on the duties willingly. Struggling with his guilt over the tragedy and his mother’s hatred, the last thing he wants to do is look after the orphaned daughter of his mother’s best friend. Expecting his ward to be a child, Benedict is shocked to find out that she is a beauty in the market for a husband. He finds her thoroughly irritating yet thoroughly attractive. When temptation wins out, he decides he must marry Philippa himself. Philippa is feeling guilt of her own regarding the deaths of her parents. Neither Benedict or Philippa believe they are deserving of each other’s love.

This novella was a lot heavier than I expected. I did enjoy seeing Benedict and Philippa grow closer and realize their worths throughout the story.

2.5ish rounded up to 3 stars.

I guess this book is similar to the numerous historical romance offerings that are available in the market nowadays. It's anachronistic and the historical details are well... lacking. One of the main reasons why I gravitate towards older historical romance novels would be the wealth of historical details. I read historical so that I can lose myself in that particular period of time. This book just feels contemporary to me (le sigh).

The heroine's attitude towards sex was just way too 21st century (using sex as a way to punish oneself, offering herself as a mistress and she is an heiress to boot - like, what?). There was absolutely no way a sheltered 18-year-old girl would know so much about sex back then.

It wasn't all bad, though. The writing style was easy to read and the smut was descriptive enough. I believe each book has an intended reader but this one is a miss for me. I'll stick to the older historical romance novels.

Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this e-book; this is my freely given opinion.

Wow... Bella Moxie has only recently been on my radar but each book/novella I have read of hers keeps getting more and more intense and dramatic, with a lot of angst, emotional drama, characters with a lot of depth and trauma that really pull at you, and a lot of hot, dramatic sex.

At this rate, if she keeps going like this, I am going to need to take some sedation and a couple of gin and tonics to get through them without tearing my own figurative guts out! As it was, I sacrificed sleep to finish this, since I started it in the evening, thinking to read a couple of chapters and then go to sleep... Nope. If sleep happened, it was not intentional, I wanted to finish this book!

Benedict was a character who caught my attention in the first book, the friend of Raff's who definitely had a story that needed to be told - I think in my review for book one, I stated I looked forward to Benedict's story, and boy, did Moxie deliver a story! He inherited his title after a terrible tragedy that took the life of his older brother and father; a fire on their family estate that he takes the guilt for. Not only does he feel the guilt himself, but his mother also blames him and does not hide it. Apparently he was the younger spare, who lived a rakish life and did not compare well to his older brother. It sounded to me like his parents put his elder brother on a pedestal and compared him to him, and as the younger son who could not live up to the shining heir, he decided to get attention by behaving badly. His behaviours led to the tragedy that lead to him inheriting the title, losing so much of his family, his mother hating him, and his physical scars.

So to put it shortly, he hates himself, hates his life, and thinks he deserves to suffer. He wants to hide away from the world.

In the meantime, his mother brings her orphaned goddaughter, Philippa, to live with them, with Benedict becoming her guardian. He thinks she is a young girl and is greatly surprised to find she is a young woman. She is a beautiful, sensual woman who was living in Italy with her parents until they died tragically, making her an orphaned heiress. The dowager countess wants to launch her debut in London Society, and insists on Benedict doing his part to help his ward, thus forcing Benedict out into Society as well. She is a bit wild, likes to play with fire, and teases and tempts Benedict as they are very attracted to each other. He figures best thing to do, to get her out of his way, is to marry Philippa off ASAP.

Philippa however, is also a broken soul. She feels deeply that she is undeserving of any happiness, including a happy marriage and family, as she blames herself for her parents death. It sounds like she had it drilled into her head before that she was wanton, wicked, and wild, and she believed it fully, and directly through her actions, her parents met their death. So rather than being a docile, well-behaved debutante, she actively tempts Benedict to ruin her.

Finally, Benedict gives in to her temptations... but instead of this leading to her ruin, he arranges to marry her. But neither Benedict or Philippa can go easily down the road to happily ever after, as they are broken souls with broken hearts, neither of which feel they deserve happiness and love.

They are such tragic characters and their stories and their angst tore me up inside as I read, and made me really hope that they could find redemption, peace, forgiveness, and maybe love and happiness down the road. It does sound like they perhaps are also the results of less than understanding, accepting, and loving parenting as well, and that moulded them into the people they were.

This was a very compelling story, that really caught me from the beginning, had me hooked, and wrung me out. Very intense in the emotional depth, trauma, and guilt... and also very sexually intense too.

4.75 stars out of 5... and I felt it needed another epilogue, further down the road - something to show some positive emotional growth to go beyond their deep seated guilt and self-hatred - at least for my peace of mind.

A new Earl and his ward both carry scars and pain. Guilt goes a long way in preventing any happiness. While seduction may consume them, it is the confessions to each other of their pain that leads to discovering
trust, love and happiness.
A dominating Earl takes care of his ward, a willing submissive.
An erotic romance.

After expecting a child as his new ward and discovering a beautiful woman instead, not much should surprise the new Earl.
However falling for the enticing lady and finding her a charming distraction was not on the cards.

A fun, steamy and chemistry filled romance that keeps you glued to the pages.
Very enjoyable

This is the second book in the series & yes it could be read on its own but this series is SO good I’d recommend reading in order. I loved both Benedict & Philippa both are scarred & riddled with guilt. They lock horns at every meeting but the attraction & sexual tension just increases with every meeting too. I became totally invested in their journey to a HEA & what a journey it was, so much so that I devoured this steamy, emotional read in a sitting. Roll on book 3

two broken souls heal each other.

I can never resist a guardian/ward romance and throw in a scarred, stern, broody hero? Be still my swooning heart! The hero blames himself for the deaths of his family and the heroine has her own heartbreak she is fighting as she believes herself to be unworthy of love due to her parents death.

Both are broken and afraid of love. Phillipa (h) thinks if she ruins herself then that will be a fitting end for her, that will be what she deserves. And she sets out to do just that, lying to the hero and telling him she’s not a virgin so he can assist her ruination. If only he’d go along with her plans and not make her feel so loved and cherished!

Safe-ish. Hero’s past is mentioned. Prior to the fire which scarred him and killed his father and brother, he was a manwhore and brought his mistress to his family home. Since the fire he has been celibate. Heroine is a virgin and belongs only to the hero, although she had a brief flirtation with a stable boy, thinking he loved her. It didn’t go very far. There’s also some minor OM drama, but nothing physical or emotionally intimate occurs. No OW at all. No cheating. No abuse. HEA but no epilogue

Pretty much the same song and dance as the previous book and novella. I really like the H and the h was ok but the plot became rather redundant (especially for a short book)😂 but overall decent. Plot 5(1-10? Steaminess 9(1-10)

By the gods, this heroine got me screaming at her blunt stupidity. I’m used to the hero’s messing up, being the ones to pull away and make a mess out of everything. This is why, probably, I had lots of fun yelling at her 😂.

It was entertaining!

But it was also annoying because by the end, ugh, what the heck was she thinking? Running away? With the guy that almost ruined your friends life? Is there anyone home up there in the head? Who is driving your brain girl? I want to talk to them.

The spice was great, but not as great as the first book (once again the library scene comes to mind 🫣).

3.5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Quotes (SPOILERS):

“I said you belong to me,” he growled. “But haven’t you figured it out yet, love? This thing between us—the vows we’ve already made. The acts we’ve already committed…”
Her lips parted at the urgency in his voice, and he saw tears lining her eyes.
He wet his lips. This moment felt heavy and fragile at the same time. Words had never been his strong suit, but this felt like the most obvious fact in the world. “Philippa, you belong to me. But I am yours now, too. Do you not see that?”
She blinked in surprise.
“We are one now, love. We are on the same side.”

Having read the first book in this series, which I thoroughly enjoyed, I was surprised by the content of this novel. Two broken people, each carrying their own scars, are thrown together amidst angst, hurt, and anger. Whilst Benedict's scars are obvious and the rumors that abound in society all have an element of truth, Philippa's scars are scorching her very soul, making it difficult to accept the good life she has been offered. This is a tragic tale, but fortunately, it does come to a worthwhile conclusion. I received a copy of this romance as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

OMG, this story is absolutely marvelous! I loved it!
The fire that claimed the Earl of Foster's father and brother left him scarred in every sense of the word. But despite the guilt and his mother’s hatred, Benedict took on the duties that came with the earldom. Including looking after his new ward—the orphaned daughter of his mother’s closest friend. He expects a timid child to arrive on his doorstep, not a tantalizingly gorgeous young lady in need who manages to rile more than just his temper. In this battle of wills, who would be the winner?
This is a short story full of great steamy moments and a lot of sexual tension. Philippa blames herself for the death of her parents. She believes to be naughty and broken so she looks forward to be punish for her sins. What better way to do it that be in the hands of a fearful earl who promised to bend her to submission? Benedict find himself stranded to a vixen who tries to seduce him in every corner of his home. But this battle of wills could only end with them naked in his bed and a ring in her finger.
If you are looking for an amazing ultra-steamy historical romance with a sexy earl who loathes himself and his seductress ward who promises to make you fall in love with her, this is definitely your book.

A wild ride! I am always drawn in by angst, and this story takes it to a whole new level. Fraught with angst, anguish and an astounding level of guilt. Never have two people needed each other more. Having grown to think herself utterly wicked and blaming herself for her parents death, Phillipa has taken self-hatred to a whole new level. She is determined to live a life of punishment to atone for her sins. Benedict has always been rebellious but when that leads to the death of his brother and father leaving him the Earl, he accepts his obligations and responsibilities as well as his mothers hatred and his own self-loathing as punishment. It is inevitable that these two come together to heal each other’s wounds. When they do come together their spark combusts into an inferno. Filled with passion and desire and eventually love that will bond them for all time. An intense and passionate story I couldn’t put down.

The Heroine
Phillipa has always had an adventurous personality much to her parent’s disappointment. Her mother & father verbally abused her and her father even beat her. But when she thought she was in love with the stable boy, who laughed in her face, her parents had had enough. Phillipa decided to run away, but the stable boy told her parents and they died in a carriage accident trying to catch her. She truly believes she is a bad person and undeserving of any happiness or kindness. At first, I wasn't liking Phillipa very much; she seemed childish and self-pitying, but, as the story went along, we learned more about how her parents treated her and her tragic love story. I can completely see how the emotional and physical abuse from her parents became so ingrained in her that she started to believe she was a bad person.

The Hero
Benedict has his own burdens; he is responsible for his father and brothers death. He was the spare son and acted as such. He brought his mistress to his family home, knowing she was crazy, and she set her brothers room on fire. His mother has not forgiven him and the scars on his face and body keep him shunned from society. I felt for Benedict; he made some poor choices and they ended in tragedy. It sounds like his upbringing was similar to Phillipa's in that he was ignored and not nearly as loved as his brother. He acted out to get attention and to hurt his family the way they had hurt him.

The Plot

After Phillipa parents die, she comes to live with Benedict and his mother. She sees a scared, angry Benedict and thinks he is the punishment she deserves for her past. She offers to be his mistress but Benedict declines because he is not going to ruin her. She all but throws herself at him, even lying that she is isn’t a virgin, but when he finally gives in to her advances and his desire for her, she is overwhelmed by his kindness and tenderness towards her. He demands that they marry, but Phillipa doesn’t think she deserves his kindness and a happy marriage, so she seeks to sabotage the relationship. But in the end, they both come to realize that they are not defined by their past and they can move forward together.

The Earl's Tempting Ward by Bella Moxie is book 12 in the Dukes Gone Dirty Series. This is the story of Benedict, Earl of Foster and Philippa. Philippa has lost her family and is sent to her mother's best friend to be the ward of her son Benedict. Benedict is scared from a fire that took his father and brother but besides the physical ones he has emotional ones. Benedict didn't expect his new ward to be a young women. This starts their story to love.

"She wanted to be consumed by him because that was the only time she felt sane and whole and...loved."

The Earl's Tempting Ward is a surprisingly touching novella.

Benedict is new to the title of earl. A second-son, now only son, responsibility is thrust upon him. Among them, is the ward his mother insists they take in. Benedict is surprised to find that their ward is not a child, but a young woman with a mischievous glint in her eyes.

"I'll show you just how much I love you. Exactly how you are. Good, bad, naughty, or wicked. I love you. All of you."

The first 1/3-1/2 of it, I wasn't sure how I felt about Philippa's behavior. But then I started to understand it came from a hurt part of herself. From then on, the story took a whole new meaning. I loved how Benedict loved her. He saw the heart of her and wanted to heal her, even when she pushed him away.

I received an ARC and am providing a voluntary review.

🌟I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK! 🌟

Bella Moxie has written a story you don’t want to miss! This is book 2 in her Dukes Gone Dirty series and although there are character overlaps from The Duke's Defiant Angel you can technically enjoy this book as a standalone, you will just miss a great book! This story and series is full of noble rogues who have decided it’s time to find a wife, get her breeding, and obtain their required heir and spare. The plan is they must all be married by the end of the season. The goal is to spend as little time with their future brides, do their duty, then return to Vestry Lane and their mistresses. No love is wanted. Their marriages will be business transactions and nothing more.

Well as with most plans - they change!

😍Just a warning this series is from Dragonblade Publishing’s “Flame” collection the hotter the better historical romance, this is a sexy, steamy, and scorching-hot read with multiple sex scenes. This story includes an Alpha male, a brazen heroine, and some low-key role playing, spanking, and domination. ❤️‍🔥

The MCs are Benedict, the Earl of Foster and his surprise ward Philippa.

Phillipa doesn’t play fair instead she taunts and teases Benedict. Watching the Alpha male try his best to be respectful and considerate, putting Phillipa’s well-being above his raging lust, is quite the tantalizing read!

“He’d be attracted to this woman no matter what. She had a figure that made his hands itch to grab her hips, bend her over, and fuck her senseless, and no one could deny her beauty. But it was that whiff of danger, the wicked gleam in her eyes—there and gone in a heartbeat—and the way she seemed to crackle with seductive energy. It was that which had him avoiding her. It was that air of mischief and curiosity that made him doubt his own willpower around her. It had been too long since he’d been with a woman. Not since the night of the fire. All it would take was one lingering touch, one poor decision… Hell. All she had to do was smile sweetly at him right now, and his manhood strained, begging for her touch.”

As these two go through their “courtship” the heat between them continues to build until one night Benedict stops refusing his tantalizing ward and claims her!

“You’re mine now, you know. You’re mine, and I’m never letting you go.” He felt her smile against his lips as she kissed him sweetly. “I am yours, my lord.” The hint of mischief in her voice had his cock stirring like a dog begging for a bone. He growled, loving her giggle as she shifted in his arms, pressing her soft curves into his hard chest. “It was awfully naughty of me to run off, though, don’t you think?” she asked, her voice so breathless he couldn’t help but nip at her neck. “Naughty? It was outright disobedient, love.” Her breathing grew shallow and her hands insistent as he tugged her onto his lap. His hard length dug into her bottom. “Oh dear,” she whispered. “It sounds like I’m in trouble.” He half laughed and half growled as he shifted her in his arms, his saucy little minx. “Oh, my love. It’s time we teach you a lesson then…” “Yes, please,” she sighed, her thighs already parting to straddle him. “Show me how I can make it up to you.” He tugged up her skirts and nipped at her lower lip. “I’ll do better than that, pet. I’ll show you just how much I love you. Exactly how you are. Good, bad, naughty, or wicked. I love you. All of you.” Her eyes were wet with tears as she leaned back to look at him. “I love you, too, Benedict. And right here with you…I have the family I’ve always wanted.” She swallowed thickly as she gave him a watery smile. “You are the family I’ve always deserved.”

I loved Benedict & Phillipa! They are absolutely perfect for each other!

I highly recommend this book and series and I am dying for the next book where hopefully we are going to watch the Marquess of Hayden, the most debauched member of the group of Rogues, fall hard! I wonder how hard he is going to fight love! 💞💖

I didn't like it. Specifically I didn't like the heroine. I thought from the book blurb this heroine would actually have backbone and not continue to be these childish shy creatures I've read from this author so far but she was. She hid it well but ultimately she was the same type. And I didn't like her. Didn't care about her history or her behavior.

The hero had all the potential to be interesting and probably was the only interesting thing about this book. But he didn't live up to his potential either.

Again, I guess it's a theme with this author's book to dance around the dom/master/daddy kink a bit even if it's obscure. Considering from the books I've read from BM we have the awful tendency for the hero to call the heroine a child when speaking to her and attempting to punish them like one. Then there are the heroines who even call themselves out of their childish behavior and such in their thoughts. So, for such a supposedly sexual story I'm just not a fan of all the references to the heroine being a child when she's not.

Definitely doesn't float my boat. So, my journey with this author ends here.

This book had so much potential but I felt the author did her characters a disservice by not fleshing out the full story of the main characters. It felt rushed and this impacted on the chemistry of the characters.

I abandoned this book the second it started infantilizing the heroine. The author did that in the first book too and I hated it. Nothing is less romantic then a man treating a grown woman like a child, and I certainly don't want to read any sex scenes with a character constantly compared to a child.

Benedict & Phillipa. If you want a forward seductive heroine then this is for you. Both our hero and heroine are dealing with extreme guilt. He brought his mistress to their family home (just to annoy his family) and she went psycho and started a fire in his brother's room. His brother died and his father died trying to save his brother. Benedict was severely burned and had visible scars on his face and body. She was a fiery redhead hellion and always managed to be getting in trouble. She was in a flirtation with a stable boy and when her father found out, he slapped her and told her she was filled with the devil. She decides to run away and asks the stable boy (who she loved) to come with her. He told her he was just trying to have sex with her and didn't love her. She gets on her horse and runs away but her parents follow after her. They are in a huge storm and her parents carriage gets in an accident and they both died. She is sent to her godmother's house (Benedict's mom) to become ward of Benedict's. Believing she should be punished for her crimes, she is consistently flirting and propositioning him but of his honor he didn't want to take advantage of her. She tells him that she isn't a virgin but he still tries really hard to stay away even though he is very attracted to her. Hearing screaming and thinking she's having a nightmare, he goes to soothe her but she's not having a nightmare...she touching herself. She finally gets him to give in to her desires and he tells her that if he does then she will be his. She agrees believing he means to take her on as his mistress. He finds out j/k she wasn't a virgin. The next day he's talking about their wedding and she tells him she doesn't want to marry him (he thought she didn't want to marry him because he was a monster but she didn't because she didn't think she deserved a good life). He won't budge. She decides to ruin herself by running off with Foley (the fortune-hunting loser from book 1). She arrives at their meet up place so they can run off to Gretna Green but he's hammered and "celebrating". She realizes that her actions today are what determines her future and not her past deeds. She rushes back to Benedict and tells him she loves him and he tells her he loves her.

Philippa wanted him as soon as she heard him say he would ‘spank her’ and that was before they had even met! Philippa had been raised in Italy and both her parents had died in a tragic accident which she blamed herself for. She was very outspoken and had lots of wicked thoughts about Benedict the Earl of Foster.

When Benedict made that comment, he was under the impression the girl his mother had said he was guardian to was a young child and they were discussing how he would not tolerated tantrums or misbehaving. Put on the spot after making the comment, he could not believe this stunning young woman was to be his ward!

Philippa and Benedict both had guilty feelings and in their own minds they had been the reason the people near to them had died. Philippa believed she wasn’t good enough for Benedict and deserved to be unhappy for the rest of her life but she wanted Benedict with a passion and tempted him every time they met.

Benedict tried his best to resist her, her antics were very wicked and very, very tempting and Philippa normally got what she wanted!

Be advised this is a really hot, steamy love story about two people who really did need each other and about coming to terms with their own guilty feelings to find their own HEA. I cannot wait to read the next instalment in this series.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I will definitely be reading more.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book and all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Benedict is the new book boyfriend! He made foolish choices and caused the death of his father and brother! His mother is bitter but there is hope for her. Relationships are all strained except his best friends! Benedict has painful scars as a reminder of his foolish choices I did not learn if the person responsible perished or not!
Just when Benedict is getting a handle on his loneliness and the repairs to his home because was a rake before: then comes Phillipa his new ward!
She is a conundrum to be sure! She carries anger and regret as a shield one moment and is a seductress the next!
I get she doesn’t want to feel anything just be numb but a man who is in constant emotional pain would not be first choice!
There is lots of chemistry enough to scorch pages but Phillipa is hellbent on destruction and she doesn’t seem to mind who she takes with her!
Benedict has learned his lesson very painfully and with Phillipa not even thinking she deserves anything kind well that sets them up for failure! Or does it?
When Phillipa does something very very stupid she endangers her life and Benedict and his friends!!
Can he forgive her and should he?
One thing for sure if people don’t think they deserve happiness they will fight like hell against it!
Will love win!!?? Can there be a HEA??

Usually the MMC is the one who makes stupid decisions that leave you scratching your head...

It started out very promising. Both Benedict and Phillipa suffer from survivors guilt, but it seems that Benedict is the only one who is capable of putting it behind him while Phillipa constantly seeks ways to punish herself. And I mean constantly. That's all she ever thinks about throughout the book. She's such a damn martyr! It's just too much. She even compares their tragedies and still comes to the conclusion that she's had it worse. This man is walking around with burn marks on his face and chest!

You'd think she'd spend some time thinking about Benedict as a person, but no. All she thinks about is how he can give her the punishment she thinks she deserves. Benedict ends up trying to "fix" her, but of course it's not that simple and she ends up making a stupid decision that leaves you stumped.

She's just plain selfish throughout and Benedict deserves better.

The love scenes were okay. Benedict keeps threatening a spanking, which never happens. For a BDSM-esque book, it doesn't really have much BDSM.

I guess this is bound to happen when reading multiple books in one series; they can't all be winners.
