But as the days turn into months, they each have separate reasons for wanting to move back to society, and the best way to the independence they desperately crave might be through a marriage of convenience.

However, settling into their homestead in Cheyenne, Wyoming, reveals a different reality for Kat. Her new husband becomes consumed by his inventions, leaving her feeling lonely and isolated. We are back with another banger book by Mary Connealy!!

This one follows Seb and Kat on their own journey away from the canyon, and we get a marriage of convenience as the cherry on top. They can't travel unmarried, it would be improper, so they absolutely must get married, yes yes. I will always support this logic in historicals.

We get to know both of them better, and see them fall in love. If you ask me though, they already were before they got married. Like, their little interactions in book one and here just proved it.

Compared to book one, the romance develops faster, but I'd also suggest reading that one first so you can not only see where these two started, but so you can follow the story that stretches throughout the series.

Relating to that, the other characters aren't forgotten, we see plenty of them too, and meet some tiny new ones (babies!!).

Toward the Dawn was just as action filled as Chasing the Horizon, I always like how adventurous Connealy's books are and I can't wait for the next book, which will follow Ginny. I hope that isn't the last one, because I don't want to part with these characters. Sniff sniff. I guess we'll see in October.

I really enjoyed this story! First, I must mention this is book 2 in the series and I recommend reading book 1 before reading this one, otherwise you may be very confused. Now, this story continues with the same characters from book 1 but with more of a focus on Sebastian and Kat. They agree to a marriage of convenience without really knowing much about one another. They soon find out though. Sebastian is an inventor and someone is clearly after him to steal his work. Kat is also worried that her uncle is after her to try and put her back in the insane asylum. We also get to see a family for our main characters from book one. And the cliffhanger from book 1 continues into this story, so we see what happens next. Trying not to give spoilers here. Overall, I enjoyed this story, it’s has great Christian content and I definitely recommend!

1870 Idaho, Wyoming and Missouri

Definitely recommend reading this series in order as events that happenin Chasing the Horizon are good background for Toward the Dawn. Kat and Seb met in most unusual circumstances in Independence, Missouri and then spent a winter with new friends in a very remote hideout. Seb and Kat are both going stir crazy and agree to a marriage of convenience to embark on their own path in a less secluded area.

Unfortunately, leaving the safety of the canyon leaves them open to being found by those that wish them harm. It's an enjoyable tale and I especially loved a glimpse at secondary character Yvonne. Hoping her story will fully unfurl in book three.

My gratitude to Just Read Tours for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

The themes of redemption and the Western frontier vibes were my favorite parts of this book!
I've decided that this author's writing just isn't for me personally. The pacing and action always seem chaotic and rushed for me, and the two main characters really irked me with their attitudes and actions for most of the book. I know Mary Connealy is a very well-loved author, especially in the western fiction space, so take my review lightly and don't let it dissuade you as I've heard this has been one of her most popular series. The clunkiness/characterization thing is probably just me!

Ever since the teaser at the end of Chasing the Horizon, I have been waiting very impatiently for Kat & Seb’s story. Both characters have kept their pasts pretty close to the vest, and it’s because we didn’t know too much about them, other than the fact that someone wants Seb dead and Kat locked up in an asylum, that my mind whirred with possibilities on how their leaving the canyon was going to play out long term. Throw in a marriage-of-convenience between them too, and my little reader heart gets all twitterpated!

I loved getting to know all the various layers to Seb and Kat’s respective backstories as well as watching their true personalities together – in close proximity with no one else to be a buffer. Seb is definitely the introvert of the pair, content to hole up in his laboratory with his inventions, though he does have a hidden backbone that surfaces (swoon!) when Kat is being threatened. Kat is the feistier one overall, and the various skills like hunting, shooting, and medical care that she’s learned through observing and helping others (including her doctor father) come in very handy in this story. Watching these two fall in love while also learning how to care for each other as a married couple is all kinds of sweet and entertaining – definitely a learning curve for two souls who are used to being isolated and responsible only for themselves individually. The added danger that finally catches up with them set my heart racing for an entirely different reason than the swoony romance did, but even in this element of suspense Connealy allows God to work in tender ways for Seb & Kat.

Bottom Line: Toward the Dawn by Mary Connealy combines wit, romance, friendship, danger, and the grace of God into an entertaining adventure with a heap of engaging characters. Not only do we get to follow Seb & Kat’s marriage-of-convenience and their fight for survival against those that want to harm them, we also get to check in with the rest of the group who remained at the hidden canyon compound. (AND I’m pretty sure there is a cameo from someone related to Connealy’s Montana Marriages trilogy which delights me!) Babies and injuries and familiar guests (including one just as wary of them as they are of her) start the stirrings of first steps in ending the ongoing arc with Beth’s evil father once and for all… and I can’t wait to see how it’s all resolved!

Toward the Dawn by Mary Connealy is a gripping adventure mixed with a tender love story and strong Christian themes. The book follows the journey of Kat Wadsworth and Sebastian Jones as they navigate the dangers of 19th-century America, all the while leaning on God.

What I loved about this book is how it naturally incorporates faith into the story. Kat and Sebastian’s reliance on God during their struggles is both inspiring and relatable. Their journey isn't just about escaping danger but also about growing closer to each other and to God. The way they extend mercy and grace to others beautifully reflects Christ’s teachings.

Kat and Sebastian’s marriage of convenience turns into a true partnership, showing what love and sacrifice really mean. Their witty conversations and growing bond add a sweet, distinctive touch to the intense storyline.

Mary Connealy's writing is engaging with unexpected twists and heartfelt moments. The blend of action and reflection makes this book hard to put down. Even though this is the second book in the series, Connealy provides quick recaps, making it easy for new readers to dive in.

The Christian faith content is genuine and woven seamlessly into the story, making Toward the Dawn a refreshing read. Kat and Sebastian’s challenges and triumphs reflect the Christian journey, emphasizing trust in God’s plan, even when the path is tough.

Toward the Dawn is a fantastic blend of romance, adventure, and faith. It's a story of hope, perseverance, and God’s guiding hand in our darkest moments. I highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys historical fiction with a strong Christian foundation.

I received a digital ARC of Toward the Dawn from Just Read Publicity Tours LLC, the author, publisher, and NetGalley. I am not required to write a positive review in any way or for any reason. My honest and unbiased opinions expressed in this book review are my own. My review focuses on the writing style, the pacing, and the story’s content, ensuring transparency and reliability.

I love these western historical's, it was such a wild time with little law and really unknown land. I really enjoyed Kat's story as well as the rest of the characters. Kat, with the help of another woman flees for her life with a wagon train headed west. Unsure of where her life is headed, all she knows is she needs to get away from her uncle and has done just that with the help of those who asked no questions when she came along and took her as part of their family. Having been in hiding in the canyon, Kat is ready to head back to society so when Seb offers a wild proposition, she is unsure as she hasn't really taken the time to know him and she has a past of her own she still has not talked about. Knowing this is her only chance, she agrees and off they head to Wyoming but when their lives are found to be at risk, they are not sure if it is Kat or Seb that is the target only that someone has found them and they are now at risk once again. Both have a past that could have brought upon them and in order to get to the bottom of things, they need to trust each other with their pasts and how they need to move forward. Who can they trust and who is out to get them? I really loved this story and bought book one and preordered book three so I can read about the rest of this group of characters. I really enjoyed Seb and Kat’s story. I had not read book one, but was able to follow along and learn the characters and backstory for this book just fine. These books are probably even better if you read each book, though, because as the author wraps up certain events in each novel, she leaves overarching potential trouble waiting to be solved in the future stories.

I really liked that this was a marriage of convenience tale. Seb and Kat may have lived in the same canyon for the past year, but they both were not forthcoming about their pasts for various reasons. I liked that they both acknowledged that they really didn’t know much about each other as they began to talk and get acquainted prior to entering a marriage of convenience. They were so sweet and had some hurdles to get through as a young married couple.

Of course, they also had to fight for their lives and try to find out who wanted them out of the way. I liked the way they grew closer as the book progressed and the way Seb’s eyes were opened to the way he had been overlooking Kat and leaving her to feel very lonely.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

After spending the winter snowed in a canyon, inventor Seb and runaway Kat want to return to civilization. Seb is hiding from someone who tried to kill him, while Kat is trying to escape the long arm of her uncle who wants her to return to an asylum. Solution- get married!
Thrilling chases, running from unknown bad guys and discovering the truth take center stage in this second book in the Western Light series. But much is going on inside the hidden canyon, too, where babies are born and a crazy person from the past makes an appearance.
Witty banter between Seb and Kat plus a sweet romance and a suspenseful plot make this a clear winner. Two themes were: Truth will come out and reconciliation is always best. The faith of the characters was evident and discovering how to get priorities straight was a helpful lesson.
I cannot wait to see how things play out in the final book.

I truly enjoyed this sweet marriage of convenience story with an intelligent hero, strong heroine, dastardly villains, and faith filled themes. I loved seeing the character development for Kat and Seb as they face danger while also learning more about one another in their marriage of convenience. Watching them settle the frontier and then face the villains that hunt them was exciting! Back in Hidden Canyon, I loved seeing our friends from the first book in the series face trials and find joy together. The sad truth of how mental health issues were treated over 150 years ago is heartbreaking, and I am so glad we have come so far. The deep topic was handled well in this book. Toward the Dawn will delight readers who enjoy western romance with touches of danger and mystery, and the faith elements preach the truth of the Gospel!

❤️ WHAT I LOVED: How Kat and Sebastian’s marriage grows from one of convenience to one of deep admiration and respect. Not only do we see them bring down the walls they have clung to for so long so they can grow together as husband and wife, but we also see them repent, put God first, and trust in His plan for their lives amid great uncertainty and adversity. We see how they offer each other grace and forgiveness and allow love to cover all things.

🏔️ READ IF YOU LIKE: Historical Romance Fiction set during the late 1800s on the Western frontier.

💭 OVERALL THOUGHTS: As with book one (“Chasing the Horizon), “Toward the Dawn” is a story of faith, hardship, endurance, and love. It is a nicely woven story that grabs hold of you from the beginning and keeps your interest held until the very last page with its well-developed characters, playful banter, heartfelt moments, unexpected twists, and dangerous encounters.

Though this can be read as a standalone, I recommend that you read book one so that you can be familiar with all the characters and have a better understanding of Kat and Sebastian’s journey before venturing out of the canyon.

Thank you, NetGalley and Bethany House, for my eArc in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Toward the Dawn is a beautiful journey of a read. It is book 2 of a series and I haven’t read book 1, so I think I might’ve gained a little bit of insight regarding this storyline, as the characters continue from book 1. Otherwise, I think I was able to follow along with the storyline pretty well overall!

This book features our main characters Kat and Sebastian (Seb), as they enter a marriage of convenience - I’m a total sucker for this - and it was beautifully written.

The settings were so surreal and I loved that there was a Missouri-environment included, given that I am a Missouri girly! The Christian/faith themes within this story made it even more enjoyable for me.

Mary Connealy is a go-to author for me. I can always count on some humorous moments and a little bit lighter read but also know there will be some high stakes and tense moments as well. And romance, we can’t forget the romance.

Toward the Dawn is Connealy’s second book in her A Western Light series, and we get the added bonus of a marriage of convenience between Seb and Kat—two people who held their pasts close to their chests in book one. Getting to learn more about both of this intelligent (and in Seb’s case, sometimes absentminded) couple.

I enjoyed catching up with Beth, Jake, and everyone else in their hidden canyon home and can’t wait to see more of everyone (and figure out what will happen with Beth’s maniacal father) in the series finale. If you are looking for a little bit lighter read that has some moments of depth, likable characters, a sweet romance, and a mystery to solve, Mary Connealy is a must.

all the drama of chasing the horizon continues in toward the dawn!

in this second book of a western light series, kat and sebastian become the focus. while they were introduced in the first book, they held a lot back on the wagon-train crossing. now, their histories and secrets come out, and as danger follows them (seb was shot and kat escaped an asylum, after all), they must figure out how best to move forward together.

toward the dawn is a solid historical romance from mary connealy. at first, i thought the relationship between kat and seb felt a little too easy-breezy, and i worried their romance wouldn't be all that interesting. they met in the prior book, spent time together over the winter (between the two books), and quickly agreed to marry. kat and seb are easy characters to root for, of course, so i wanted them to be happy—but i was quite glad when they had some relationship dynamics to work out (amidst the more life-threatening issues).

connealy blends their romance and danger with interesting bits of history and faith for a good historical read. i did reach the end, however, and wish it had been a little more fun, like some of her older books. everything in toward the dawn just feels so serious for these characters, and i wanted a little humor. still, for the right historical reader, this is sure to be a good book.

(but beware: this book sets up the next book in the series with plenty of intrigue—now, i have to know how it will all turn out!)

In this sequel, we pick up where book 1 left off--for the most part. It is after the winter has set in--so I'd say about 3-4 months after book 1 ended. We now get to learn about Kat and Seb. What IS Seb's top secret invention anyways? And just what kind of history does Kat actually have?

Seb was definitely a unique sort of bird. Not your everyday lead male character. I still really like Kat and I enjoyed learning more of her past. There was an unusual chemistry between them that I'm still not 100% sure I think worked.

The ending was unexpected, and yes, sweet Ginny's story will continue to move forward into the third book. I enjoyed meeting some of the first book's characters again and hope they show up in book 3 as well. I think I preferred book 1 to this one...but hopefully book 3 will tie up all the loose ends!

I absolutely loved this book! It starts right where the first book left off, so it's important to read them in order. Revisiting all the characters from the previous book was such a delight. The marriage of convenience plot and the thrilling elements had me hooked from the start. Getting to delve deeper into Kat and Seb's characters was a real treat, especially because they're so private. Their chemistry and witty conversations were simply delightful. While there's plenty of action, the story is still grounded in themes of friendship, hope, and love. If you're a fan of western stories with suspense, mystery, and a marriage of convenience, I highly recommend giving this series a try!

The second novel in A Western Light series, Toward the Dawn feature Kat Wadsworth and Sebastian Jones. The Holt, Rutledge and Collins families from the first book are also mentioned in this one. Kat and Seb are going stir crazy in the hidden cavern. Kat is ready to join society, and Seb wants to resume his work on his invention. They settle on a homestead in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Their marriage of convenience is changing into a true marriage. But lurking out there is the unknown gunman who shot Sebastian and Kat's uncle who put her in the insane asylum.

The Christian faith is interwoven into the story so seamlessly it feels natural. The relationship between Kat and Seb is a little faster than Beth and Jake's, but, then again, Kat and Seb have known each other a full year. The novel is thoroughly researched and the characters well developed. The romance is sweet. Together, Kat and Sebastian must face the dangers of their pasts to move toward a hopeful future and love.

I feel like this is worse than the first book. The writing is immature. There are so many plots from the first book that were just thrown in without it making sense or cohesively written in. I’m confused because a lot of the story is about the “marriage bed” but that adds no details to the plot. Idk how it was in the “Wild West” but I def wouldn’t marry someone I’ve known for a year but had no chemistry or romantic feelings for then to have strife because they don’t know each other or get along? Last, this book has mentions of Christ and God throughout but the whole story for both books are anxiety written about being caught. Truly if they trusted God they would pray and seek His peace, not manmade hiding. Not a fan of this series.

This was a riveting tale of a group of people connected because they all are trying to hide from someone intent to do them harm, and second, they have been snowed in a canyon for all winter and spring.

Two of the occupants, Kat and Seb, want out of the canyon. Seb is an inventor, and he has a growing need to get out and continue to invent. Kat really doesn't like being trapped anymore, especially since she is an escapee from an insane asylum. Yes, this series is quite interesting, and this is the second in the series. The author does an amazing job catching everybody up, but reading the first story really gives these characters the background they need to understand all that has befallen them.

Kat and Seb have also decided that it would be best for them to marry, for convenience's sake. However, as they get to know one another better and forge their married life, they begin to fall in love. I liked that their shared circumstances brought them together, and both realized that they needed to open up about their pasts, even finding out how connected they may be. Because, they have some bad people wanting to get a hold of them. And their pasts were unusual.

I found this a very different story with a character's lives that are shaped by their unique circumstances and yet still held onto their faith: inventors and women escapees who were put in the asylums for nefarious reasons. The forced hiding in a canyon where it seemed the world stopped for a time, until they emerge and find out that is not the case. Sometimes life can seem like that for me too. Especially after reading a book that has so captured my attention.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

This is my first introduction to Mary Connealy's writing. "Toward the Dawn," is the second book in the 'A Western Light' series, set in 1870. While I typically prefer to read books in order, I was pleasantly surprised at how easily I could understand the previous events without a detailed recap. The story begins slowly but gains momentum like an old-fashioned train. Once the action starts, it doesn't let up.

The story is told from multiple perspectives, which gives readers deeper and more interesting insights and increases the intrigue, which I enjoyed. The plot is filled with various events such as hidden canyon hideaways, a marriage of convenience, damsels in distress, many bad guys, kidnappings, and a depiction of the lack of women's rights during that time. The book mainly features devout characters striving to do what's right, with a focus on the journey of newlyweds Sebastian and Kat. They experience significant challenges and hardships, which lead to personal growth, and learning important lessons about themselves and marriage. This was very well written.

Fans of Western Romances with Christian values and exciting action scenes will eagerly dive into "Toward the Dawn."

The Story continues in Mary Connealy’s Wedtern Light series! I fully enjoyed Chasing the Horizon, and Toward the Dawn picks up just after Book 1 ends. Toward the Dawn is mostly from Kat and Seb’s point of view, but we get to see how other characters fare as well. All the characters have to continue in caution as they face their adversaries that caused Kat and her friends to be imprisoned in an insane asylum.

Here are a few things that I loved in the book:
- Twins
- Hunting Adventures
- inventions
- The marriage proposal

Toward the Dawn has exceptional characters that have many layers. I was mesmerized by Kat Wadsworth and her strength despite everything she went through. Sebastian Jones also has his own set of troubles.

The story had plenty of secrets, danger, and calls to action by Kat and Sebastian to handle impossible situations. The storyline was engaging and had me hooked from the beginning. Part of the setting for the story was unusual and different from other stories I've read. This book was as good as the first one and I can't wait to read the next. I highly recommend it.

This is a very interesting and exciting book to read! There's so much going on! There's a sweet love story that's filled with secrets! There's also murder, kidnapping, and attempted murder. There's new friendships and twin babies being born!

The characters are wonderful! They're so well written, even the perpetrators. I love how Kat and Seb start to work together towards a common goal. I also like how the community living in the canyon helps each other and truly acts like family.

I feel like this can be read as a stand-alone, but it would have made a little more sense if I'd read the first book. Mary Connealy does such a good job writing that it's easy to pick up where the story is heading.

I won a complimentary early review copy of the book from LibraryThing through Bethany House. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Loved this book. Ms. Connealy's stories typically have something in them that inspires a reader to research things. In this case it was not only the battery that Sebastian Jones was working on inventing, but a real life person (Elizabeth Packard) who devoted time on changing laws in several states allowing women to prove they were not insane when a family member (usually male) wanted them committed. I'm looking forward to more on this subject in the third installment.

When the first book ended, several characters were going to spend the next two seasons hiding out in a hidden canyon in Idaho. They had departed the wagon train in book one and followed Oscar Collins and his brothers to a secluded area that would keep Ginny and Beth safe from Thaddeus Rutledge and his henchmen. A parson from the wagon train had performed a marriage ceremony for Jake and Beth before they split off for Idaho. Not knowing who had shot Sebastian Jones in book one and feeling unsafe herself, Seb and Kat joined Ginny, Beth, Jake, Oscar, and Joseph in their "Hidden Canyon" location. This book (#2) picks up in the spring of 1870 after everyone has endured a long winter in the canyon.

Very little is divulged in the first book about both Kat and Seb. Kat assisted with Ginny's escape from the asylum in Chicago because she was in the right place at the right time. And Beth felt she owed Kat for her help by allowing her to join them following their escape. Seb came into the picture when Kat, Ginny, and Beth discovered him shot in an alley in Independence, MO. Kat, who had assisted her physician father for several years in Chicago, nursed Seb back to health. In this book, the reader learns more about these two and their histories.

After the entrance to the Hidden Canyon thaws enough, Kat and Seb leave and head east. He is anxious to resume "inventing" and she wants to stay clear of her deceased husband's uncle. This particular Uncle Patrick was the one who had her committed to Horecroft's asylum. Due to propriety and their own individual principals and morals, Seb marries Kat. It's a union they both want only to discover later how much their interests are very different.

The story goes back and forth between Kat and Seb's travels and activities, and what is going on in the canyon where they left Jake, Beth, Ginny, Oscar, Joseph, and the babies. It allows the reader to keep up with characters from the previous book and how the author ties both of them together before this book ends.

It's a very exciting story and one I wanted to give five stars. No real closure was provided to some of the villains, which I'm thinking will be heard from again in book three. And Huey Jessup? This guy turns out to be heroic and the author just sends him off to Montana to help his younger brothers with their ranch? Call me selfish, but I wanted more on Mr. Jessup.

If you enjoy western historical fiction mysteries and romance, then you might like this book. Ms. Connealy is labeled a Christian author but she doesn't have any qualms about having her characters pull the trigger on a bad guy. And the romance scenes are tastefully written.

Can't wait to read the next book in the series!

“Wouldn’t stepping into a marriage in such a reckless way be yet another sort of prison,” Kat ponders in Mary Connealy’s novel, Toward the Dawn.

~ What ~
The second book in A Western Light series, this 268-page paperback targets those interested in a historical romance about a young couple who marry for convenience as they search for answers to their past. With no profanity, topics involving theft, physical abuse, attempted murder, and death may not be appropriate for immature readers. The ending includes a teaser of the next book in the series, the author’s biography, and advertisements.

Set in 1870 in the Wild West, the continuation of this series involves Kat, who has escaped an asylum and travels with friends to Idaho to get away from her ruthless uncle-in-law, and Sebastian, an inventor who knows someone is after him and his ideas. When the two decide to marry for convenience and face the unknown, they must work together to resolve their pasts to find a future of love and true companionship.

~ Why ~
This story shows how the wildness of the West cannot be tamed just as greed and control can take over the human heart if unchecked. Kat and Seb’s relationship seemed realistic and well-written, considering they knew little about each other as they lived together hidden in the canyon. I liked the explanation of Seb’s obsession with inventions, Kat’s willingness to learn how to survive, and the expansion of train travel during the era.

~ Why Not ~
Those who do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ may not like this story that focuses on trusting in God and others to overcome adversity. Having not read the first book in the series, I had trouble understanding what had transpired regarding other characters in the book and how they arrived at Hidden Canyon. I found some of the tale repetitive.

~ Wish ~
Since this is a series and it appears there are the same characters throughout both books, it may be helpful to add a list of them. While I greatly appreciate the plan of eternal salvation was given regarding accepting Christ and believing in Him, it did not thoroughly explain confessing one’s sins.

~ Want ~
If you like a historical Christian romance about two individuals having to deal with their pasts as they look toward their future together, this one that includes mystery and intrigue may interest some.

Kat and Sebastian both have reasons to hide, but after a whole long winter stuck in a hidden canyon, they're both ready to face the perils of the outside regardless - and what better way than to do so together through a marriage of convenience? But their hopes for a normal life don't last long, when they are attacked at their new homestead. And their hopes of a happy married life don't seem to be faring much better, due to Sebastian's absorption in his inventing work, to the exclusion of all else. Will they be able to work out who is out to get them and put their pasts to rest before it's too late for one or both of them? And even if they survive the attacks, will they be able to achieve the happily ever after they hoped for?

I've read and enjoyed books by this author in the past, but haven't read any recently. That means that I haven't read the first book in a series - and maybe my feelings about this book might have been different if I had? As it was, while it wasn't a bad book, my overall feeling was 'I wanted to love it'. I found the pacing a bit odd, with a mix of deeper scenes (some feeling relatively trivial) and sections skimming (often quite briefly) over the top of their lives, through days, weeks or months. Unfortunately, that reduced my connection to the characters. The jumping back and forth between the hidden canyon and 'outside' caught me off guard at first, but I got used to it - though I suspect that just focusing on 'outside' would have worked better for the book, if not for the series. Overall, it wasn't a bad book but I really didn't love it - maybe there was just too much going on for the length of the book? Readers of the first book may do better because they already know the characters, but my feeling was that it was just okay.

Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from NetGalley. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.
