Mila Kiss Mysteries #1

Sister, Liar, Suspect, Sleuth

Rate this book
Mila Kiss wasn’t supposed to be here.

The plane ticket to rural Lancashire was meant for her sister — before her sister was murdered and her children vanished. Now Mila is on the run, carrying a locked tin box that holds the truth — and the key to her freedom.

But Farlington is not the safe haven she hoped for. The locals were expecting a meek mother of two, not a guarded, striking human rights lawyer with secrets in her eyes. Suspicion brews. Whispers grow louder. And when a body is discovered under shocking circumstances, all eyes turn to Mila.

With time running out, Mila must unravel the truth and confront the dark forces closing in. But trust is dangerous — and betrayal could cost her everything.

The story follows Mila, who is fleeing her war-torn country. She desperately hopes to find evidence to put away her sister's killer.

Mila finds herself in a Lancashire village and despite the good intentions of the villagers to do their bit. The reality of having a stranger amongst them is too much for some of them to bear.

The writing style was engaging, and I was quickly turning the pages to see what happens next. The author did a fantastic job with the characters. I love Mila, Nikolai and Fabien and lots of others! We really got to know them, and I felt all the emotions along with poor Mila.

The story is apt for the current political climate and the ongoing war in Ukraine. This aspect felt well researched and believable.

The author also captured English village life with the gossip, rural setting, and self-importance! Yet, also manged to create a swirling criminal underworld full of murky characters and corruption. The author brought these contrasting ideas together perfectly.

Overall, it is a really enjoyable cosy crime mystery.

Huge thanks to the author,  Bloodhound Books, and Love Books Tours for providing a copy of the book.

A cosy crime mystery with bite!

There’s a beautiful contrast between the slow-pace of rural life in the Lancashire village, and the violence of the Eastern European country Mila Kiss has fled as a desperate refugee - desperate not only because she’s been displaced by war, but, as we discover, because she has her own troubles. There’s a cast of memorable characters- Mila herself, her host family, the local landed gentry, and
the police characters who crop up later on and bring a welcome dash of humour. But my personal favourites were older refugee Nikolai, his unsuitable friends, and his disapproving son - the inversion of normal parent/child dynamics was drawn with both pathos and humour.

This book combines the fun of a cosy English village mystery, with the dangerous glamour of an international crime thriller- like Mila herself, walking in with her leather jacket and her tight jeans, heavy metal music blasting in her ears.

I really enjoyed this book! I found it so hard to put down and really felt the need to keep reading from the very beginning.

Short chapters are a major plus for me! They helped to build the suspense of the story but still held enough information in each chapter that you wanted to carry on reading to find out more!

Mila is a wonderful character who I connected with straight away. Her drive and determination to find the information she needs and to get justice for her sister is just compelling to read.

I love the setting in Lancashire too and the cast of supporting characters here are all fab! It really is easy to get drawn in and want the best for Mila and hope she gets her outcome.

I’m not writing anything else because I don’t want to spoil it - but this was a really great read. And I really can’t wait to read more from this author in future! A really fantastic book!

I absolutely loved this! It was a fantastic start to a cosy mystery series! The premise of the book was excellent. It was a very difficult to put this one down!

The story was extremely well written and flowed perfectly. There were no unanswered questions at all. The research into the book was excellent also.

I loved all the characters in this. Mila was brave, kind and determined. Fabien was a good man and he was loyal. Anna was sweet and cared deeply which I thought was nice. Nikolai was such a sweet old man. He made me smile. The rest of the villagers were very interesting. They were a great group but with very different opinions at times! It made for interesting reading! The rest of the characters outside of the village were all great too. The cast of characters worked really well together.

The book is written in third person from multiple points of view. I enjoyed this as it lets us follow the story with different characters perfectly.

I highly recommend this book. If you love a cosy read like I do then is 100% for you!

Lisa's vivid evocative writing skills and descriptions really brought the storyline to life and I just cannot wait to get hooked into her next book!!! I have just never come across a book or movie anything like this one and I doubt I will again!!!! I really hope this is brought to the big screen and if not why not? This book will suck you in and keep you gripped in the pages until your thrown out at the end with a racing heart!! An absolute must read that I wont be forgetting about anytime soon!!

Do not start this book until you have cleared your schedules as you will not be able to put it down!! The characters were all realistic and strong and I was completely invested in them throughout. Lisa's evocative descriptions really makes them jump out of the book and come to life in front of the readers eyes. I was completely invested in each and every one of the characters especially Mila/Sofia who I loved "being next to" and learning more about. Each of the characters all played their own roles perfectly and they all had their own unique and individual personalities with their own flaws, strengths and weaknesses. The fact that this is Lisa's debut novel yet she has managed to create these amazing, unique and strong characters is just absolutely amazing!!! All of the characters were multi layered with complex personalities which definitely made them all the more interesting to read about!!! Unfortunately, I really can not say anymore as I don't want to spoil it for future readers. Regardless of what I thought about who, each character worked perfectly to make this page turning psychological thriller!!! I just cannot wait to see what characters this amazing author comes up with next!!! I genuinely loved getting to know all the characters and was completely invested throughout!! An absolutely fantastic selection of unique characters that all worked together perfectly to create an absolutely chilling, gripping and addictive page turner!!! This book really is a truly unique page turner that I picked up this morning and had completely devoured it in a few hours!!! I am definitely looking forward to getting stuck into 'Mother Rebel Misfit Sleuth' when it will be published on the 11th June.

Overall an absolutely fantastic and gripping introduction to a promising new series!

I was instantly attracted to this book by the vibrant pink cover. The genre not being my typical go-to, the cover really stood out to me.
I was instantly gripped by the action, the tale of Mila coming to the UK from a wartorn country, and the prejudice she faced just seemed so timely.
I liked the fact that the country she had fled from was never named, so you had no biases based on real-world events.
The characters were all really interesting, I just felt like each one had so much going on that we had to glance quite superficially over their lives/problems because otherwise, the tale would have been huge!
There was always something going on, from the beginning, so it's very easy to race through the pages, not realising how much you've read.
There's some really tough subject matter in this, I can't give away the parts that really shocked me without spoiling part of the story, suffice it to say some characters have had an awful history which made me sad.
I'd definitely not shy away from reading more by this author in the future. I think this book has a huge appeal and will do really well.

I really enjoyed this book; it was a slow burn at the beginning but it's setting the scene for Mila
and her surroundings as a refugee in a small town in england. As all the key characters were
being described and their behaviours came to the forefront of the book i could visually imagine
the type of small-time people who they were (small town girly here) so the characters were
relatable and rather funny at times too.
It follows Mila trying to not only be left alone from all the town "busy bodies” she is also trying to
find closure in the world she left behind in Ukraine. You find yourself really routing for Mila as
the book continues down the mysteries and it evolves as she is strong, determined, kind of
sassy and 100% sarcastic FMC which I adored!
The plot kept me guessing all the way through and I was invested in what was going to happen –
without giving you spoilers its worth a read, just be mindful it's a slow burn – you need to get the
background and the current day characters in place before the dark centre starts to show.

This is a tough book to review given some of its subject matter - but what a great book to introduce me to this new author.

First of all, I was initially drawn to the book by its gorgeous front cover.

I loved the bright colours and the anonymous/ silhouette character - this really does stand out on the shelves.

It took me a little to really get into this, but I think that's because it was really not quite what I'd expected.

The pace soon picks up and the storyline had me hooked in no time.

The characters felt so relatable - even though we are dealing with different cultures, this really draws our attention to issues that are so current at the moment.

Mila was a really interesting character to explore and I feel that some of her story was held back here.

Having fled her war-torn country and ended up in a rural UK, we see how she navigates and adapts to her new life here - all the while doggedly fighting for justice for her sister.

This was really well written, keeping things exciting and full of tension.

I loved that once I got going, I actually couldn't put this down - the short chapters having me sneaking just another and another in-between jobs.

I hadn't realised until now, that this actually forms the start of a new series and we'll be seeing more of Mila in the next book ...and I can't wait!

What I love about cosy crime books is that they are so often completely bonkers, a bunch of amateur sleuths putting two and two together and coming up with 27. The other thing I love is that they are so totally implausible, real escape from reality fiction. And Sister, Liar, Suspect, Sleuth definitely fits into that category, so of course I loved it. At times there was almost too much going on, the search for Mila’s killer and children, the scandal surrounding Fabien and the search for the truth about his father's death, but it all came right in the end.

The writing was perfect for this genre. I really felt like we got to know the characters, odd as many of them were. I instantly disliked Chloe, I don't know why though, she just annoyed me.

I think Lisa has done a really good job of capturing how difficult it must be for refugees coming here too. The feeling of not really fitting in, and people being nice to your face whilst also thinking you shouldn't be here.

Overall, this was a fun, cosy mystery read which is just what I needed on a chilly Sunday afternoon.

I love, Love, LOVED this book! Sister, Liar, Suspect, Sleuth is the perfect balance of mystery, humor, and heart. I really enjoyed the funny one-liners sprinkled throughout the more serious passages. Even though this is a cozy mystery, themes of social issues are woven in, making this a deep, complex novel.

The main character "Mila Kiss" is someone I wanted to root for right away. She's tough but with a soft center. She's trying desperately to unravel a mystery in order to save her niece and nephew from a perilous situation. The side characters are also fabulous - Fabien and Elodie are fantastic! I won't spoil the ending, but I'll say that I was extremely satisfied with the outcome.

I listened to an interview with the author, and she mentioned that there would be a second book in this series. I will definitely be picking up a copy of the next book - can't wait until it's available!

The title of this book is about everything happening in the book. It is about war refugee Mila Kiss being taken in by a family from a village in Lancashire, but Mila is actually named Sofia and she is fleeing her country because she is wanted for the murder of her sister Mila.

Mila and her 2 children were due to leave her country and travel to the UK after getting a refugee placement with a host family. Sofia decides to use her murdered sister's name and paperwork to get to the UK to find evidence to expose Mila's real killer and get Mila's kidnapped children back.

There are a lot of characters and goings on in this book, but it is easy to keep up with who everyone is because the storyline is all connected. I managed to read it easily without getting confused, which I often do get with books containing lots of characters.

I loved Mila/Sofia's character. Even though she seems feisty, she's so likeable. I hated Chloe though because she was so unkind and her jealousy was awful!

Sister Liar Suspect Sleuth by Lisa Nicholas

Genre: Cosy Crime/Mystery
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Review

Sister, Liar, Suspect, Sleuth is the first book in The Mila Kiss Mysteries Series

Mila Kiss has arrived in a small village in the UK, fleeing her worn torn country, but Mila is not what she appears to be!

Wanted in connection with the murder of her sister, Mila must find the only person who can prove her innocence and save her family.

This book is a compelling story of crime, family, conspiracy, resilience and conflict.

Nicholas has written an engaging cast of characters and a story full of twists and turns, comedic moments and a lead female character that will not stop until justice has been delivered.

I thoroughly enjoyed being led through this well written mystery and found myself not being able to put the book down, the ending sets up the next book in the series nicely, which I am very much looking forward to reading.

This is a tense story about a woman's need to avenge her sisters death and get justice, all while fleeing a war-torn country, living with a host family, and dealing with social and economic prejudice.

Mila lands in the UK, but she isn't who her host family is expecting. They are expecting a mother and 2 children, but where are the children?

She has been accused of killing her sister. She's on the run, and she doesn't know who to trust when it comes to finding an important piece of information to help clear her name and get the person responsible held accountable.

The story isn't just from Mila's pov, which I think helps give an all-around idea of what's happening and their reasons for doing things, which keeps things interesting.

I really like Nikolai. He was a great character. I could give or take the others, but him I liked. He added that little bit of humour in this story with a mostly kind of tense theme.

I enjoyed it, and the chapters were short, making it quite a quick read.

Thank you to the author and lovebookstours for allowing me to be a part of the tour.

Firstly how amazing is this cover? You can't help but be drawn to it. I really enjoyed the book itself, it was a great cosy mystery read with a great premise, very well written with well developed characters. The words flowed off the pages and it was an effortless read. The collection of characters made this book, I loved Mila and how strong willed, tough & loyal she was & Nikolai was just the sweetest old man you couldn't help but love. I loved how different all the characters were, yet they worked so well together.

I always love dual POV's & it was the perfect way to get to know this group of characters. This was the perfect mix of crime, mystery, family dynamics, more serious elements such as human rights but also plenty of comedic moments.

This was a really intriguing read, entertaining, extremely thought-provoking at times and then laugh out loud funny the next. I loved it & can't wait to see what comes next.

I haven't have the fun of diving into a cozy mystery on quite a while now. None had quite grabbed my attention like this book did. The vibrant, contrasting cover and the brilliant blurb really promised an excellent adventure, and the author completely delivered on that.
I loved Mila. She was a strong woman, filled with determination and courage and this showed every time she took the right step in showing her innocence and in finding the culprit. She is clever and has great banter. I also enjoyed getting to know Fabien, as a very interesting addition to the mix and to see their interactions was interesting.
I loved how the author laid out the book, the way it transitioned from one segment to the next, giving us little breadcrumbs along the way, so we could piece together the story as well. Honestly, I thoroughly enjoyed this read.

I must tell you, at the beginning of this book I couldn't find a likeable character with a magnifying glass. Everyone was judgemental, temperamental, belittling, and just downright mean. I was SO tempted to give up, but I'm even happier that I didn't. Ms. Nicholas allows the reader to observe the growth her characters experience, and believe me, everyone experiences growth in some way. I hope Ms. Nicholas plans to make this the anchor book for a series. The writing style here is easy to read and follow, the characters are anything but boring, and the story is convoluted and compelling. This is the first book by Ms. Nicholas that I have read, but I will be looking for more of her work to enjoy. I received a review copy from Bloodhound Books and this review reflects my honest and voluntary opinion.

This was such a good read and I thought it was a story that really resonated especially currently with our protagonist fleeing from a war torn country, it just made it that much more thought provoking and evocative for me.

The book is well written with a story line that is so compelling and at times so heartbreaking and characters that are so well developed. This story and the people in it will stay with me for a long time to come.

There is some hard hitting topics in this book and there were times I had tears streaming down my face.
In all honesty I don't think anything I say about this book could do it justice but I would highly recommend reading it. I can't wait to read more by the author

Once I finished this book my first thought was "I really hope there's more to come" and it seems there is, so happy days! 😁 I think this story had a good, strong start that really sucks you in as we know right away Miss Kiss has secrets! and each chapter easily keeps your attention. The chapters are quite short so they're easy to read through and they unfold through multiple POVs, which I'm always a fan of. I think this has a really great bunch of characters, some you like and grow to love and some you can't stand! Along the way you learn a lot about everyone so you definitely get invested in their lives. I quite enjoyed the ending and I really want to know what every gets up to next! Overall a good, easy to read, enjoyable cosy crime mystery.

I don’t know if you know this about me, but I love a cosy crime. I like getting really invested and pretty much playing sleuth myself, trying to work out the whole who what where when why before the story reaches its conclusion and all is revealed. This book, however is a bit more complex than the average cosy crime. There’s a complete cast of characters and a few side quests. There is a lot going on but that actually makes it more interesting and a bit more exciting to try and fathom out. Lisa Nicholas’s writing is brilliant. Really gripping and tense in all the right places. Absolutely thrilled that this is a series and I’m already looking forward to the next instalment. Great read, found it hard to put down.

This cosy crime novel certainly has a twist to it and kept my attention until the very end. The ‘cosy’ atmosphere in the beginning introduced delightful and believable characters from village life but the twists described a darker side to the tale.

I particularly liked the introduction of topical international issues which was done without diminishing the cosy atmosphere.

The book encourages you to want to learn more about the main characters and Mila certainly fulfils all of the aspects described in the title.
The plot keeps you guessing throughout and I would strongly recommend that you pick this up as soon as it is published.

📖 Book Review 📖 Who is Mila Kiss? Beautiful, intelligent, intriguing, a refugee seeking asylum - a woman with so many questions surrounding her identity. The world is a scary place with war still wreaking havoc and Mila and her two young children seek asylum in the United Kingdom but suspicion arises when Mila, a human rights lawyer, arrives solo. Sister Liar Suspect Sleuth is a brilliantly written book layered with complexities that reminds us that life is not black and white, especially when in times of crisis and conflict. Lisa Nicholas delivers a whole new spin on cosy mysteries in this absolutely riveting and thought-provoking novel.

Fleeing her war torn country, Human Rights Lawyer Mila finds herself living in a small village in England, taken I by a well meaning family. However, Mila is hiding a secret. She was s wanted in her home country in connection with the murder of her sister. The person who is really responsible has taken her niece and nephew and is hunting Mila. She must find the only person who can prove her innocence in order to bring the culprit to justice, rescue the kids and clear her name. The book is well written and engaging. The aspects of the war are handled sensitively yet realistically. Mila was a strong character with a great sense of loyalty. I enjoyed this read.

I was first very attracted to the cover here, the bright pink and female silhouette made the book really stand out. After reading the blurb, I thought it sounded really good but possibly a bit too “busy”. This was not the case when actually reading though and it was easy to follow. There were short chapters which I liked & it kept the book at a good pace and really engaged me. The story was something original and I thought very cleverly intertwined.
There was a mix of different, consistent characters, which I enjoyed. I loved the DS & PC characters in particular- they were very funny & there was other humour throughout.

We learn straight off that Mila is not who she says she is, the reasons are then learnt as each chapter goes on, learning more and more as the book goes on.
Short chapters with multiple POV really does get you unable to put this book down.
Great characterisation whether you like the characters or not, even the villagers and their different reactions to a refugee arriving in their small Lancashire village from a war torn country, a well written book.
We see Nikolai right at the beginning with Mila and I just loved him straight away 😍
A cosy mystery with dark elements within, it was also fun with lots of humerous interactions throughout.
A great read for any crime mystery fans.

A refugee arrives at the Wilson’s family home minus the two children she should have been bringing to safety. The alarm bells start to ring with the villagers opening their hearts to them and questions are asked. The Wilsons daughter returning home from Australia to escape a failed marriage only adds to the chaos, add that to the return of her ex boyfriend and you have a perfect storm.
I wasn’t sure if this was a serious mystery or a comedic, tongue in cheek novel. An enjoyable novel if a little confusing which genre it fits into.

I have to say I was definitely intrigued about this book from the blurb. I wanted to find out what happened and why the female main character is framed for her sister’s murder. The book was written in third person, and with a lot of characters did get a bit confusing at times. It has mystery to it but I’d say it’s more of a crime themed book. You slowly find out answers the further into the book you got and kept me interested. I’d say it’s definitely worth the read. I give this book a 4 out of 5 stars. #ad #giftedbook #freebookreview

I absolutely loved reading this and definitely hope there is more to come.

From the off this cosy crime had me hooked. I love a good multiple POV read because I feel you get to know the characters for who they are rather than who one person perceives them to be.

I was so invested in Miss Kiss finding the person responsible for her sister’s murder, especially because essentially she was framed for it.

The short chapters are short and really well written, each one revealing a little bit more until the finale which I was so pleased wrapped up how it did.

This is very topical with the Ukraine war in the forefront of people's minds. Mila Kiss is a Ukrainian refugee sent through the sponsored families initiative to a family in rural Lancashire. The Wilsons are expecting a mother and two children so when single Human Rights Lawyer Mila appears all is not as it should be. The community looks into Mila's background while Mila herself is investigating a more serious situation in her homeland. Add to the mix the local landowning family and an unexpected death and we have intrigue, danger and humour. #bloodhoundbooks #sisterliarsuspectsleuth

We meet Mila as a refugee fleeing an unnamed war torn European country.
In a quiet English village residents prepare to welcome her.
But Mila is not what they are expecting - a human rights lawyer framed for a crime & searching for her nephew & niece.
This is a gripping story, at times very funny, which also makes the reader think about the expectations we have about refugees.
Highly recommended.

An intriguing story of conspiracy, crime and family. This book felt a little different to the usual crime solving stories I have read in the past and I believe this is because the basis of the story could genuinely happen. We all know about the conflicts overseas and hear of refugees being moved into the UK but to read a story about a crime solving refugee that only wants to find justice and look after her family really intrigued me and kept me hooked throughout. The plot twists surrounding the village of Farlingtons residents really keeps you guessing throughout with some strong characters like Chloe who comes across as a real mean girl. I'm still not sure I like Fabien's character but I would be interested to see if he really has changed for Mila.
