This mystery book is very intriguing, as the mystery kept me turning the pages till the very end. I love how genealogy is woven into the depths of this story and the main character, Susie Greene's life, as that makes it even more exciting. This book shows how exciting genealogy and tracing the stories of our ancestors can be, as that makes me want to get into genealogy research more to learn more about the background of my own ancestors. The author, Bessie Hubbard, has put a lot of depth into the characters and how they have woven the story together. I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this mystery, as it was a very interesting read. I also really like the added concept of a furry friend tagging along with the main character while solving mysteries. I love the parts about Susie's dog, Delfina, playing in the snow, and also how she's trained to be a search and rescue dog. I look forward to reading a sequel to this book, and to continue to follow along with the mysteries that Susie Greene and her dog Delfina are solving together. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who loves mysteries, as it was definitely an interesting concept for a mystery novel.

A very easy read, you will not want to put it down. Susie moved to Grand Teton, left the tech world after her grandparents passed on. Her parents were killed in a car accident when she was 12, and her grandparents took her in, living in California and they would go to Grand Teton a lot.

in her new hometown she is following her passion of genealogy and trainer Dalfina to be a rescue dog. You will love Dalfina smart dog.

One weekend she decides to go cross-country skiing something she wanted to do more of, so she packed up her and Dalfina and headed to the mountains where she rented a cabin.

It's breathtaking, she decides to take Dalfina out for a spin down the trail, all of a sudden Dalfina barks, she smells something, she's pulling Susie to go into dense part of mountainside. Dalfina found a spot and started digging, Susie started helping and they did find something,a dead male body!

Susie starts investigating uncovering feuding between founding families, the dead man was related to. Follow her twists and turns as she and Dalfina investigate, and becomes a target herself! Is her family a part of this trouble to???

You got to read to find out.

DIGGING UP THE PAST is the first book in the Susie Greene Mystery series by Bessie Hubbard. Susie is delving into her family’s genealogy and her dog Delfina is always by her side. They are both training for search and rescue and doing a good job of it uncovering clues and dead bodies.

This cozy mystery is set in Red Hollow, Wyoming and there are vivid descriptions. We get to see how Susie’s mind works as she gathers clues and information to figure out whodunnit. There are multiple stories being told with a lot of twists and turns and the chapter titles give some direction of where the story is headed. There are family and friends, small town living, gossip, connections, small businesses which are the hub of the town, some scary moments as well as pieces filling in the holes. There is closure when the whodunnit is revealed but there are some loose ends also.

DIGGING UP THE PAST is filled with clues and crimes to solve in this small mountainside town. Grab something hot to drink and settle in front of the fire to see if you can figure out whodunnit.

After Susie Greene’s grandparents pass away, she decides to follow her dreams and move to the Grand Tetons with her Border Collie, Delfina. Armed with a Master of Library Science and Information Science (focusing on genealogy), she begins to research her family's history, trying to reconnect. She and Delfina also become involved in search and rescue using Delfina’s skilled nose.
On a ski trip with Delfina, Susie follows the clue-sniffing pup to an area off the trail where her digging turns up a man's body
Susie's natural curiosity draws her to investigate the death and she soon finds that the victim belongs to one of the town's founding families who have been feuding for decades. He was investigating a murder that had been covered up for many years.
Susie uses her experience in researching and genealogy to uncover clues, but her search soon makes her a target.
I received this book as an Advanced Reader Copy and I am happy to leave this voluntary review.
I enjoyed this book and recommend it to those who enjoy cozy mysteries and genealogy.

Susie and Delfina on the Case . . .

Susie Greene and her Border Collie, Delfina, are an amazing team. The two of them race along on a Search & Rescue mission to find a missing hiker before darkness made the task more difficult. A muffled cry let them know they were getting close, but Delfina suddenly stopped. She sniffed around, then left the trail with Susie following until they found the hiker and the rescue trainer, Eric Matthews. The two “rescuers” made a very effective pair.

Susie and Delfina head out to enjoy a cross-country ski trip. She she rents a cabin and then they head out together on the mountain trail. But Delfina lets out some barks and leads her to an area where she starts digging! Unexpectedly, they uncover the dead body of a man identified as part of one of the town’s founding families who have an ongoing feud. Will Susie and Delfina find the clues to lead them to a solution to the murder victim’s death? Will the man’s family help or hinder her investigation? And will she end up putting herself in danger before she has a chance to solve the case?

I enjoyed this first in series small town mystery. Susie Greene is a search and rescue worker in Wyoming with a passion for genealogy and ancestry. While working one day, she and her dog partner, Delfina, find a dead body buried in the snow. Susie’s curiosity sees her digging into the life of the deceased and it leads her down a path of dangerous discoveries. The more information she uncovers, the more it seems someone wants the information, and Susie, buried.

I liked the idea of someone uncovering small town secrets by researching ancestry at the library. This mystery took off and the stakes were high! I was constantly worried for the safety of the MC but also was just as curious as her! 😂

This is the promising beginning as Book 1 of a new series. It has a number of thought lines.. Search and rescue, genealogy, some historical possible murder between two competing families, in addition to a recent murder that may be connected to past family conflicts, close friends in a small community, and of course a budding/possible future romance.
Though this first book spent quite a bit of time introducing the reader to all the players, there was plenty of action, some danger, and lots of information.

Susie is now living in the Grand Teton Mountains. She spends her time with her genealogy pursuits and search-and-rescue work with her Border Collie Delfina. While out hiking one day, Susie and Delfina discovered the body of a local man buried in the snow. An attempt by Susie to find the man's family leads her down a path littered with mysteries from the past. Can she sort out the lies and rumors from the past to find the truth and bring justice for the young man? Sometimes digging into the past can be very dangerous! Unique storyline and some endearing characters had me hooked! Maybe Susie will find more mysteries from the past in her next book!

This short and sweet little mystery was definitely a little predictable, but it’s the journey not the destination. I enjoyed the characters in this book and world they were in. Susie and Delfina take you through a small town mystery that opens them up to a few more mysteries to come. I will definitely be watching for the rest of this series.

Here’s a couple quotes I enjoyed!

“Maybe if you painted a fish, one would finally show up!”
“They taught her that even when loved ones are gone, the love shared doesn’t fade away.”

Susie has a search and rescue dog Delfina. On a weekend ski trip Delfina found a man buried in the snow Susie felt since she found him she had to investigate his death. She was more convinced to find the cause when she discovered he was a distant relative of hers. Delfina keeps finding clues which had people threatening Susie but she keeps pushing forward despite the risks. Surprise ending. A good read with exciting ending.

I liked Susie Greene and her search and rescue dog, Delfina, but Susie was probably the only fully developed character in the book. I liked the search and rescue aspect, which gave Susie and Delfina a reason for being off the beaten track and discovering the body. I liked Susie's genealogical research passion, which gave her a reason to continue investigating the murder. But there was too much exposition, especially Susie's backstory which, in my opinion was too much too soon.

Digging Up the Past is the promising start to a new series. Suzie and Delfina have found a new home in Red Hollow, but the town's secrets threaten that home. A feud going back to the beginning of the town has family ties for Susie that she knows nothing about. Delfina is Susie's border collie and they have a very strong bond that helps keep Susie safe. At times sweet with message of finding a home and at other times tense with all of the action to catch a killer, Susie Green is sure to become a favorite with cozy mystery fans!!

Enjoyable

As a genealogist, the plot was interesting. If only it was that easy. The characters were quite likeable. But, there was too much scenery description to follow. I found myself scanning to get back to the story. Why didn't Delphinia alert Susie of the prowler outside? A dog as well trained doesn't sleep that soundly. I'll try the next book though.
