With the galaxy-traveling aliens defeated, Nadya feels it's time that a new Leader be appointed to guide the Riss into the future. At last, they have the freedom to explore the stars with their own navy and their own home planet of Freeland. In the process of defeating the aliens, a friendly alliance between the Sadr Alliance of Stars (SAS), the United Free Nations (UFN), and the Riss nation developed. But the SAS and UFN navies suffered very heavy losses in the war. The Jahaba Peoples Union (JPU), its navy now larger and better equipped, sees an opportunity to conquer all three and to destroy the Riss they have always despised. Fear of conquest proves greater than loyalty for the SAS and UFN and it leaves the peace-loving Riss to stand alone.
I was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, and joined the military right out of high school. I served twenty-two years in the United States Air Force as a certified internal auditor. While in the military service, I lived in seven states and two foreign countries, and obtained two degrees: a BS in mathematics and an MS in computer science.
After I retired from the Air Force, I secured a position with Digital Equipment Corporation, located in Bedford, Massachusetts, as a software course developer and instructor. I worked twenty-two years at DEC and held positions as a course developer, course development manager, software engineer, and software engineering manager.
Today, I’m retired and live in Tucson, Arizona, with my wife of fifty-three years. My daughter and two grandchildren live in Maryland. I began writing several years after I retired, when I was seventy. My first two attempts remain in my desk drawer—good ideas, but poorly written. Subsequently, I co-authored, with Jeanne Tomlin, three fantasy novels: Talon of the Raptor Clan, Scales of Justice, and All My Friends Have Wings (young adults). Talon of the Raptor Clan was sold to ePress-online Books and came out in July 2009. Since then I have written two additional novels: The Laughing Hounds (urban fantasy) and The Riss Gamble (science fiction).
My hobbies for the past forty years have been kung fu and tai chi.
Waited what seemed like a long time for this (hopefully not) last book of the Riss series. Really well worth the wait! There were a couple minor continuity errors (like "leader Zhu" when leader Reese is correct; or mismatching Riss names to the correct human partner - Damaas with Cethlion for example). But basic continuity was well maintained not just with this book but throughout the series. I know, because I went back and re-read all the books in order before reading this one. I would be interested in the next series of Riss stories when they build their nation and the families, develop the technology for exploration, commerce, (new) alien contact and possible colonization. What philosophies will they have; What personal challenges? And did Bradshaw ( the love interest) get his own Riss so his lifespan and health was like Reese's? C. R. Daems stories are begging to be Whispersync(ed) and I, for one, would snap them up. For now, I will say "Thank you Mr. Daems" for my most recent and enjoyable "lost weekend".
Once again we are there. The last book of a series. Now I need some time to reflect on this excellent series of books, the wonderful characters who has become like friends over the last few days before moving on to the next book.
Long awaited book, enjoyed the series, I reread it again all five books, still find it very interesting. The author really stress on racial equality and behavior of ppl who is against racial unity.
Lots of action, hope there is more books from this author
And no copy editor needed in this book! Unlike 2-4...very few mistakes. A good read, with a satisfying conclusion. I like how forward thinking the heroine is, visionary. Has me thinking about my life a bit differently. Looking much farther forward than usual.
I am sorry that the story ends. Would love more books. I put this author right with Thomas DePrima and M.K. Eidem, Laurence Dahmer's. Will enjoy more of this author.
