EN This manga caught my attention from the very first moment I saw it. My expectations were high, and yet it still managed to surprise me in the best way.
It's a fantastic thriller that keeps you hooked from start to finish. The entire narrative revolves around the mysterious architecture of a house, and as unlikely as that may sound, the premise turns out to be absolutely fascinating. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear just how brilliant the concept behind it really is.
I loved it — and I'm diving straight into the next volume.

As expectativas eram elevadas e, ainda assim, conseguiu surpreender-me pela positiva.
I was with this until the architect made the incredibly random jump from "weird extra space in house" to "secret murder passage, also child must be murderer." There was literally nothing supporting that assertion, but it gets treated as truth throughout the rest of the book. I might read volume two if I find it at a library, but this isn't a series I'll spend more money on.

eng translation. i can’t do this man i need volume 2 translated right now
ok but actually i love how much of the mystery and uneasiness comes from learning just how bizarre these houses must be based off of a set of blueprints. three cheers for haunted geometry!!!
Strange Houses Vol. 1 is basically “what if every Airbnb you entered had emotional trauma built into the walls?” Uketsu really said liminal vibes and ran with it. The stories are short, creepy, and hit you with that subtle “okay but why am I low-key scared of my own room now?” energy.
The art is clean but unsettling in that quiet, psychological way—like something’s wrong but you can’t prove it. A few endings felt a little too poof, it’s over, but honestly? The ambiguity kinda works.
Overall: spooky, stylish, weird in all the right ways. Would I enter any of these houses? Absolutely not. Would I read Volume 2? Absolutely yes.
Moj utisak o prva četiri toma mange The Strange House (★★★★) 🏡This is really just the baseless drivel of a horror-junkie architect who reads too many mysteries! Please, don’t take it too seriously. Ponos do neba!
a murder mystery manga is exactly what i needed. it's really atmospheric though nothing important happened in this volume but i know it's going to have an interesting story, it has the vibes. going to continue. ★: 3.75
So good!! This was one of my most anticipated releases this year!! And it was everything that I was hoping it would be! I cannot wait for the next volume to release! Perfect for those who love murder mysteries! I couldn’t put it down. Highly recommend!
Somebody has a friend looking at buying a house. Somebody is asked to examine the floor plan and begins to learn that the house may have a more sinister history than first appears. And that’s just the start of the story… (or multi-story)
New horror manga! Hooray! In theory. After spending the earlier part of the millennium reading Mail and Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service, I was quite pleased to see something new and potentially interesting show up amidst this week’s releases.
Unfortunately, most of this story is about as interesting as the real estate listings that form part of its narrative. There are attempts to make it lurch to life with dramatic revelations (one of which is quite good, I must admit), but most of the conclusions are somewhat creepy yet mostly implausible, even for horror.
Much of this ended up reminding me of Monster, for some reason. Yet while that had some of the highest tension of any manga I’ve ever read, this is a lot of research into real estate with a payoff that doesn’t really work for me.
And that’s the problem - if you buy into this, you’ll be fine. But if you don’t? Eh, this won’t really be much of anything exciting. Urban horror mixed with modern folklore and murder should be an easy sell, but it’s merely okay.
The later introduction of a woman who may be connected to things and her story adds an extra layer of unease, but even the story notes that some of that all feels a little easy. There’s not really enough of the ‘can she be trusted angle’ either.
But she’s also the only compelling character, really - our lead is nameless (and almost androgynous in a way I cannot say was intentional but feels like it) and not at all interesting. Half the story is him/her/them bouncing off an equally boring guy with a theory that should be better than it is.
The geometry angle (thank you, thank you) is probably the most interesting and provides some really neat little moments, but even then the theory that develops feels more designed to fit the facts than anything sensible.
I don’t scare easy, so it’s not like I was hoping for sheer terror from this, but horror’s a mood and an atmosphere and this doesn’t really get there by the end, sadly. I’m genuinely unsure if I want to see the answer to the one lingering mystery badly enough to read another volume.
On a more contemporary level, compare this to Golden Gold, which was weird and creepy and started off with a terrific hook that made you realize it was going to get so bad. And then it kept getting worse. And it sustained it over multiple volumes (proviso - I ended up dropping the story, not because it was bad, but because I just had way too many books on my plate at the time). This is nowhere near that in execution.
2.5 stars - I mean, I didn’t hate it, but it’s not nearly as engaging as I would have liked it and it didn’t instil me with a desire to see what happens, which should be job one of any story, but especially a horror story.
This manga relies on atmosphere to invoke feelings of eerieness, and luckily does so quite well. It feels a lot like the novel House of Leaves, which also left me feeling unsettled. I worry the manga may have shown its cards a little too soon with regards to the central mystery, but as no definitive answers have been given yet, I'm eager to see how this might change.
Huh. I finished this book in record time, it turns out. That was goooooooood. I knew for the fact that it was going to be quite challenging to read this as a novel since I lack the ability to visualise, quite literally. So reading this as a manga turned out to be quite a good idea. There literally was nothing but speculations based on house plans but it was sooooo, so interesting and thrilling. I got chills, chilllls.
This was pretty atmospheric, and considering most of it was just speculations based on some blueprints, that's no small feat.
Of course, as a first instalment, there's much more promise than actual delivery of real content, but it does look promising, indeed, as a manga perfect for murder mystery lovers.
What is the deal with the fcking stairs😭 please that is not how you draw stairs in a floor plan, those stairs run in opposite directions in the 1st and 2nd floor🙂🙂
UH. Spannend. Sehr plot-driven also. Ich werde auf jeden Fall auch den 2. Band lesen.
I loved this!! I got told about this manga from my sister. She said I would like it and she was right! It was creepy and kept me reading from page one! I cannot wait to get to volume 2! It’s also based on a horror film and now I need to watch it! It was based around the house so not much character development yet but great story line, great artwork, and great ending!
