The Harden City Chronicles is a series of novels, novellas, and short stories detailing the lives and adventures of the citizens of Harden City. They are all gay, romantic, and erotic in nature.
This book is Part Two of the series, a short story called The Journal.
In The Rescue, the previous book in the series, Garth rescued an informant from a brutal death and wound up with the rescued man in his home. A relationship began to develop between the two men.
It was tough going. Garth is a middle class worker in Harden City, but Dean, the man he saved, is a resident of The Penn, the poor part of town. Harden City’s economic and social structure isn't kind to the poor, relegating them to the slums of the city and making it almost impossible for them to get out. Garth fell for Dean, but he knew it was a doomed relationship. If it became known that he was gay, Garth would lose his job and all of his assets – making him as poor as Dean. He wanted Dean badly, but Garth knew it would put his job and life at risk, including his ability to see his young daughter.
Considering the risk too great, Garth exiled Dean back to The Penn. And it was the greatest mistake of his life.
Now, a confused Dean wanders The Penn, fending for his life and trying to understand why Garth betrayed him. When he learns that Garth is hunting for him, he wonders if he’s trying to reconcile, or if he’s trying to silence him for good.
The Journal is a gay romance urban fantasy with erotica. Fictional Harden City has some sci fi and paranormal elements, but the relationship between Garth and Dean feels like the real world.
Will Dean allow Garth to find him? Or will he stay hidden in The Penn, scratching out a subsistence with the other poor citizens of Harden City?
This part of the story is in a whole new format then the first book. This is told via Deans new journal, not the one recovered by Garth in the first book. It's far shorter than I'd like. While I think plot points are introduced, there's no real build & climax pairwise. Coulda used something like that.
