If one of your favorite movies is “Sweet Home Alabama” but also love the action of the movie “Taken” then this is the book for you!
I absolutely loved Emerson and Sutton’s story of second chance romance! The beginning pulls you in with its sweet romcom feels and then sucker punches you with an action packed thriller twist!
Emerson is a swoon worthy MMC, and Sutton is one badass FMC! I want to be more like Sutton!
I love all K.M. Russell pop culture references throughout the book, they brought such cute comic relief! I loved finding all those easter eggs! If you are in the mood for a romcom with some action definitely add this to your tbr!!

The authors has put so much love, loss, heartache and joy into this book it will leave you thinking about it long after your done. Oh and did i mention the spice good lord had me blushing.
Where do I evens begin?!? This book had me in its grip straight from the get go.
Sutton is trying to climb the corporate ladder in New York. Building a life for herself that breaks ties from her small town home in Mississippi. She even feels that’s her stable, handsome, lawyer boyfriend is fixing to ask her to be his forever. But all this goes up in smoke when she gets papers back from her husband she left 5 years ago. Unsigned divorce papers.
So Sutton musters the courage to go back to Mississippi and face the man who let her down and chose his job over her time and time again, leaving her alone to deal with heartbreaking events.
But Emerson Scott is NOT just a man easily left. He has been waiting for Sutton to come home, to prove to her that she’s it for him. That he’s waited all these years for her, even though he’s kept tabs on her in the big apple and know she’s been seeing someone else.
Sutton isn’t easily convinced and regardless of what happens in Mississippi, she has a whole new life with Parker waiting for her back in the city… or so she thinks..
Pull The Trigger was a wild and emotional ride that has you in your feels! The tension between Emerson and Sutton is unreal! Being my first second chance romance, I can NOT wait to see what K.M Russell writes up next! Especially if it involves a certain grumpy widow and a fiesty animal shelter attendant.
This was easily a 5 ⭐️ read for me and I loved that it wasn’t consumed with spice but kept us readers WANTING MORE. I’m giving it 1.5 🌶️ out of 5!
—————————————————————————————— I was honored to be selected as a ARC reader for “Pull the Trigger” by K.M Russell. I received a ebook copy in exchange for an honest review. I attest the review above is entirely my own.
"When I say pull the trigger, you pull it. No hesitation. Do you understand me?"
Where do I even begin with this one? I’ve been begging Katie to read this book for the past two months, nonstop. The moment I saw the words “For fans of Sweet Home Alabama” on her Instagram post, I became her number one fan and stalker.
From the start, this book was everything I hoped it would be. It made me feel giddy and comfy—just the kind of book I needed after recovering from the flu. But then it took an unexpected turn. While I was prepared for the action-packed elements of the Reapers Guild, what really surprised me was the way Katie portrayed our FMC, Sutton. This girl is a total badass! Everything I thought I knew about where the story was heading towards the end turned out to be completely wrong. Katie had me in a chokehold for the last 30% of the book; I couldn’t put it down.
By the end, I was absolutely hooked and would have immediately picked up the next book in the Reapers Guild series if it had been out already.
You’ll fall in love with all the characters. Emerson, our MMC, has just the right amount of stubborn, golden retriever energy. Sutton, our FMC, is fearless, determined, and such a strong character—I’m so glad Katie wrote her this way. Sutton is no damsel in distress, and it’s easy to see why Emerson loves her so much. Garrison and Lilia bring an extra level of fun to the story, and secretly, between us, I’m crossing my fingers that we’ll see more of them in future books.
Katie Russell is a fresh, upcoming author to watch, and I’m officially a forever fan!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - 5 Star Rating Multi First Person POV (Emerson & Sutton) Spice Level: 🌶️🌶️ Age Rating: 16+
🖤 𝓻𝓮𝓿𝓲𝓮𝔀 🖤 This is a little spicy and action packed version of Sweet Home Alabama, if our main mmc was a contract killer. From the beginning, it draws you in as a cozy, romcom, then it swivels into an action thrill-ride that has you on your toes until the end. This book will give you all the feels, as it is a spicy second chance romance that will grip you, wanting more when you reach the end.
🖤 𝓹𝓵𝓸𝓽 🖤 Sutton is working her way up the corporate ladder. She has made a name for herself and is ready to tie the knot with her lawyer boyfriend. But when divorce papers come back unsigned by a love from the past, she’ll have to revisit Emerson in order to get them signed. But he has other plans, as he’s been keeping tabs on her new life and wants to prove that there is something still there between them.
🖤 𝓬𝓱𝓪𝓻𝓪𝓬𝓽𝓮𝓻𝓼 🖤 Sutton is a straight badass FMC. Emerson is a . They met and got married after six months, but he was never home and she began to feel alone. She had made the decision to leave him to jump start on her career. The chemistry and banter was 🔥🔥🔥 between them and I lived for it. Garrison and Lilia were great supporting characters and I wouldn’t mind reading a story about those two :)
🖤 𝓽𝓻𝓸𝓹𝓮𝓼 🖤 🖤 second chance 🖤 dark romcom 🖤 contract killer 🖤 personal growth 🖤 feisty banter
🖤 𝓬𝓸𝓷𝓬𝓵𝓾𝓼𝓲𝓸𝓷 🖤 Overall, if you’re looking for all the comfy vibes of Sweet Home Alabama and the action from Hitman, this book is definitely one that you should add to the top of your TBR today. A really fun second chance romance that will grab you until the end!
Sutton is just your average independent girl - she lives in New York City, she makes good money in her job, she has a good boyfriend by her side, and she’s thriving overall. No, she wants him to propose. But there’s one thing stopping her, she’s already married…and in walks Emerson.
Emerson screwed up six years ago and forced Sutton out of his life. He is in love with her to this day and doesn’t want to get a divorce. Can the two make amends, or will Sutton and Emerson finally get divorced?
Would you believe that all of that happens by only 30% of the book? The wild ride that occurs after the “second chance romance” trope plays out is absolutely insane. You’re going to have to trust me, because I would be remiss if I spoiled any single second of it.
This book had me in a chokehold. I was constantly thinking about it when I wasn’t able to read (parent responsibilities, and all that fun stuff). I think that Sutton is my spirit animal in some capacity. The moment the author brought up Sutton‘s elder emo personality I knew that second she I could be best friends. That chapter alone made the book for me lol
I definitely think that everybody should check out the content warning before beginning to read the book, there are some sensitive topics that could trigger a reader. That is not to say that the book isn’t worth being read, but obviously your mental health matters.
For the first half of this book I was so into it. I absolutely adored Sweet Home Alabama, so when I saw a book featuring the draw of that movie I was excited for it. Add in an assassin? That is until 50% of the way through and it went off the rails. Why? Why do that? My interest for this story left after that... Don't take my word for it. It could totally be a "me” situation but I don't like it when romances or plotlines change mid book. And I have come to realize that I hate secret societies, especially when it involves the main characters, so....
This was my first read of K.M. Russell’s but I can say with 100 percent certainty that it will not be my last, because this book absolutely swept me off my feet. I feel in love with these character instantly, they were so relatable and easy to love that you’ll end up wishing they were your real friends, the plot kept me on my toes and constantly guessing at what was going to happen next, and the romance… oh my word I can’t even talk about how great a romance story this was without feeling like I’m giving away half of the story!! So, if you’re looking for a book that’s the perfect blend of hilariously sassy banter, a black cat FMC who just wants to find where she fits in this world, a German Shepherd of a MMC who wants nothing more than the girl he’s been in love with since the second he locked eyes on her and give that girl the world, a hate to love you enemiesish to lovers, second chance swoon-worthy romance, just enough spice, and a plot so full of heart-stopping drama that you’ll forget you have work in the morning all in hopes of see what’s going to happen next then be sure to grab a copy of Pull the Trigger immediately because it is one that is not to be missed!!
The state of my mental health as I read "Pull the Trigger" ...
1. Progressing from laughing to crying to throwing up @ 40%
2. Hating everyone who told me this was such a GOOD book (while also remembering the author’s promises at the beginning...) @93%
3. Staring blankly at the wall for a solid five minutes @100%
Every now and then I read a character that just seems to literally be inside my head....like the author interviewed me and asked me how I felt about the subject at hand and then wrote my thoughts right into the character. That happened for me in this book, and I am quite certain I will never forget Sutton and Emerson.
I would love to dive into the details of why, but I refuse to ruin the experience for anyone who hasn't read this book yet. Please be mindful of the trigger warnings before diving in, but if those pass your literary boundaries, then I highly recommend this book! I am so thankful for the ARC opportunity and can't wait to get my hands on other work by this author. I am quite certain I will be thinking about this book for a long time, it's just that good.
I loved the mixture between the comfort vibes of Sweet Home Alabama and the intense suspense vibes we get in dark romance. Sutton finds herself engaged, but still needing to take care of the past. And when she goes to take care of it, some ugly sides of her fiance surface. In the meantime though, she faces her current husband. Needing those papers signed that he refused to sign...twice. Emerson is the perfect definition of a doberman bf. Protective, loyal, and possessive a bit. 😆 but also sweet. To her.
Honestly I wasn't expecting things to unfold as they did. Definitely kept me on the edge to figure out what happens.
But seriously, Sutton was simply badass, working alongside Emerson. Even though it was tough for her being in that situation again..but what she did...badass 👏🏻👏🏻 Love her and Emerson together. Love Garrison and Lilia, omg those two were so hilarious when they were in the same room. I need a book for them. 🤞🏻
💚Age Gap 💚Second Chance/Estranged Marriage 💚Whirlwind Romance 💚Black Cat x Pitbull 💚Small Town x Big City 💚Dark(ish) RomCom 💚Sweet Home Alabama Vibes 💚Personal Healing 💚Feisty Banter 💚Secrets
Sutton meets and marries Emerson within 6 months. The kind of romance one can only dream about until she starts feeling neglected and often left home alone. Emerson is constantly busy and away on business. He feels terrible about because he can't reveal his secret. He can't be truly honest with her about what his job actually entails. Sutton does her best to move on and later becomes engaged. Just one small problem. She's still married!
There was so much to enjoy and keep the reader interested! I loved Garrison & Lilia as side characters so much! I found this read to be very intriguing and kept me thoroughly entertained. Definitely recommend check this out book out!
Sweet Home Alabama meets Taken!!! To say I loved this book would be an understatement. It had all the lovey-dovey feels of a southern small-town second chance romance with the actions and brutality of a thriller/dark romance. Our malevel main character was 100% written by a woman because he was perfect! Emmerson radiates german shepard energy from the very beginning. Strong and protective, but also incredibly sweet and loyal. Did I mention the southern accent because that was icing on the cake. I enjoyed Sutton's character development as a woman in her early 20s, which changes her mind about what she wants out of life. Sutton felt lonely and wanted a change but then had the confusion of what if she wasn't actually who she wanted to be. Lilia and Garrison need rivals to lovers to book! I loved their parts of the story sooo much! This book was a fun and exciting read from start to finish!
give me all the sweet home alabama vibes! i finished this book and basically had to watch the movie. i had all the feels in this book, laughing uncontrollably to crying uncontrollably and everything in between. so thankful to be chosen as an ARC for this book...thank you! such an amazing story, i highly recommend this! you will read and reread!
sutton thought she had bigger plans that what the little town of holden springs, mississippi had in store for her. she met and married emerson after about 6 months of knowing him and then he was gone. gone all the time for work, she felt alone. so after being married for about 6 months she left him and high tailed it to NYC...where all her dreams were gonna come true. or so she thought. the man she was gonna marry did not turn out to be the prince charming she thought he was and thankfully emerson and her best friend lilia were there. between finding out what he really did for a living and finding out what her new ex fiancee dabbled in...she was shook. she rose up to the challenge to be the bad a$$ we all knew she would be.

When I saw that there were ARCS available for a dark and twisty Sweet Home Alabama I did not hesitate, and I was NOT disappointed! A little warning that the beginning is very, very Sweet Home Alabama. However, as soon as things shift back to the city the dark comes creeping in and things get interesting.
I did knock off a partial star for a little predictability, but I don’t feel like it affected my experience in a way that I will not continue this series. I absolutely adore the characters and want to see how they evolve through continuing this case.
I laughed, and cried, and laughed while crying. I’m invested in these characters and this storyline and I can’t wait to see where it goes. Thank you for allowing me to preview it!
Have you ever imagined what would happen if instead of a sweet southern boy, the male main character of Sweet Home Alabama was a for hire hit man searching for scumbags who torment women? Then I have a book for you! Emerson tried his best to make things work with Sutton but he couldn't figure out how to put his job second. He's going to learn how because thanks to some unsigned divorce papers she's back in his life.
What I loved about this book, besides the obvious dark mafia vibes and spicy moments, was that Emerson and Sutton already had an established love story from the beginning. We didn't get their initial story and it worked so beautifully in this book. As always, Katie delivers an impactful and hard to put down read ❤️
2nd chance romances will always be one of my favorite tropes and when I tell you this one did not disappoint I mean it DID NOT DISAPPOINT! Oh my gosh this book was so beautifully written *Chefs Kiss*
When the description of Pull The Trigger is this, I mean how could it go wrong?!? "Just imagine, if you threw Sweet Home Alabama in blender with a contract killer, red flags, emotional trauma, and a pure fucking chaotic plot twist. You get this book."
Out now on Kindle and KU! Go snag it up you won't be disappointed‼️
And as always please check ⚠️ warnings! 💜💜 Mental Health Matters💜💜
I honestly enjoyed this book. I didn't expect it to turn into an action-packed thriller. It started out like a cozy romcom, then bam! I could not put this down! Honestly, this would make a great movie. Seriously! You get sucked into this book within the first chapter. You better get comfortable with a drink and some snacks because you're not moving until you finish the book. This deserves all the hype! Don't sit on this one. You won't regret reading this one! What I would give to read this book again.
Before we get into this review, can we just acknowledge Lilia is the bestest of best friends ever?! Never doubt that girl has got your back!
I was glued to this book like flies in molasses! Dark Sweet Home Alabama vibes however, Sutton is no sweet southern belle. Sutton is a full-blown tornado! But despite the destruction to his heart, Emerson can't let her go. And he's willing to burn the world down to have her in his arms again.
I absolutely ADORED this book. Sutton and Emerson's second chance at love is a rollercoaster of a ride that will bring out all the emotions. Katie really knows how to take you from laughing, to crying and yelling at her, to kicking your feet out of giddiness.
I highly recommend you read this book if you enjoy:

Pull the Trigger is easily Russell’s best work to date. Deeply moving, especially spicy, and full of all the turmoil anyone could ask from a dark romance, it serves us a delicious slice of “Sweet Home Alabama” meets Haunting Adeline. Expect gut wrenching twists and turns, a badass FMC who never stops growing, and a second chance love story you’ll be thinking about for weeks afterward. Five stars.

When you think you're getting a sweet Sweet Home Alabama retelling......and then a demonic cult makes a quick and dirty appearance and things get real crazy real fast.
This story is full of great banter, crushing revelations, and heart-racing action.
Don't let the sweet-ish beginning fool you....this story is more than meets the eye.
This book took me a little longer than I wanted to read because of my stupid work and my stupid responsibilities.
I was hooked - beginning to end, I was hooked. I knew there were some plot twists, a couple that I had figured out (hence the four stars - I love to be totally shocked), but this was an exciting, spicy, fast read.
Pull The Trigger is an amazing dark romance book with a second chance romance you don't want to miss. Sutton and Emerson are married but some secrets keep them apart until suddenly Sutton meets someone new and wants a divorce. Emerson doesn't want to let her go, Sweet Home Alabama anyone? This book will keep you hooked and in suspense the entire time! Read to find out how.
I got the privilege of being an arc reader for this book and I’m so glad I did absolutely amazing. Think sweet home Alabama but with a twist and so much better. She’s a kick ass herself in her own way. He’s a hitman. There’s some banter and definitely funny parts. Had really good world building and character development really helps you understand the characters and why they act how they do.
Emerson hid some things about himself from Sutton which caused her to leave but I didn’t really have much sympathy for the way Sutton handled things after she left. She was such a pill. I felt Emerson could have done better.
This book was absolutely amazing the entire way through. Sweet Home Alabama meets millennial meets dark humor. Literally everything I love!!! I highly recommend you read this immediately!! Cannot wait for book two!!
I enjoyed this book and was hooked from the beginning and couldn’t wait to see how it ended and wanted more after i finished it. If you like sweet home Alabama vibes you will enjoy this book. It was very well written, I can’t wait to see what Katie releases next.
Talk about a wild ride. This book had me flipping pages like my life depended on it. The tension, the twists, the characters who keep you guessing… it all comes together in such a satisfying way. Fast-paced, exciting, and just the right amount of drama to make it impossible to put down.
Did I enjoy this book? Sure thing. Would I recommend it to others, sure! However I almost feel like I read 2 book in one. The book started like a replica of Sweet Home Alabama just as described and all of a sudden I feel like I was reading a John Wick or Taken kind of movie. I don’t even know how to describe what I read. It was truly enjoyable and Emerson and Sutton had crazy chemistry.
