This was an enjoyable, fun read. A new virus hits and it gives you super powers!
It was easy to pick up just read, it flowed well and made me want to keep reading.
The MMC Chris Taylor was likeable. It explores our morals and what we would do if we suddenly had superpowers, the whole good vs evil.
Some of the deaths were quite gruesome. Also, the death of the dog was not pleasant, so bear that in mind if you don't like that sort of thing.
I did find it had a lack of female characters. The one which was briefly written about got a 'superpower' which made my eyes roll!
Overall an enjoyable take on the virus pandemic theme.
It was easy to pick up just read, it flowed well and made me want to keep reading.

So when I read this blurb, I have to admit I was intrigued, a pandemic, with a virus that gives people superpowers like what in the sci-fi is that! Now, for some people, it might put you off with the pandemic and being a few years out of it, but honestly, what a gripping read this was.
I did struggle near the beginning with the dogs death, like I love dogs, and that was pretty brutal to read ( if you've read, you will know 😭) I think I had to step away for a bit from the book before I went back into it. However... apart from a few other graphic scenes, what a journey this was! Once I got past a certain point, i found that The Hero Virus was fast-paced, gripping, and rollercoaster of a read and a credit to Russel Dumpers writing! The only thing I wished was that it didn't end like that! Although I am secretly hoping that there will be a 2nd book for that reason

Great book! The author's style of writing is very easy to read and you feel as if you are reading every day of the character's life. I enjoyed the questioning of human nature, and the proof of just how messed up we can really be.
The story had a Covid-esc feel to it, which was a horrifying blast from the past but kept me enjoying the underlying theme of the book.
Fantastic action/fight scenes and I loved learning about all the different skills that people got from the hero virus.
Would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for something different to your usual hero story and fast paced to add to their tbr, it kept me guessing!

Chris Taylor is the main character and he is at a low point in life when we first meet him, dealing with grief from being recently widowed, he finds companionship with his Labrador Herodotus. Life takes another ugly turn when Herodotus gets sick and dies but Chris is also sick but survives his illness to discover he now has incredible power! Chris realizes that he is not the only one, as the virus ravages it's way through the population, it kills many but leaves survivors with powers. The real problem is that people are more than willing to gamble their lives at the chance at survival, that also includes criminals of all types that would make them a force to be reckoned with!
Chris is suddenly faced with a new life, can he become a hero? Can he rise up and save the world? The pandemic world was little tough to read after living through one. The plot was continuously propelled forward with action and more introductions of powers and fighting. I found the book to be very exciting and entertaining. It feels like reading a mature super hero origin story, if you like comic book heroes, pick this one up!

I'll be the first to admit that sci-fi isn't a genre I have ever picked up before, but never let it be said that I judge a book by its cover (genre)!
When I read the blurb, it intrigued me, and I have to say that I immediately invested in the story.
The main character, Chris Taylor, is in the throes of grief, with only his dog for comfort and company. When suddenly, his companion was cruelly taken from him, I was in bits!
But then, and this is where the sci-fi bit starts, Taylor wakes after a bout of illness with super strength unlike anything anyone has seen before.
I won't go into all the details because you must read it all for yourself, but wow! The way the virus that Chris contracted mysteriously begins to spread and its effect on those who get it is all a bit crazy!
It's like reading about COVID on steroids! None of us wanted that, but people were clamouring to get infected by this new Hero Virus, and no amount of cordoning off areas worked.
I know it's fiction, and sci-fi at that, but I was picturing the rather famous places written about, and as unimaginable things happened, they were playing out in my head.
I'm glad I spread my genre wings!

The premise of the book sounded quite intriguing. A pandemic where people are actively seeking out being infected. After everything the world has been through over the last few years you'd be forgiven for thinking, great, another pandemic, but this is so unlike anything we've seen in recent years, so I'd definitely say don't let the idea of it put you off.
There's a couple of places in the book with some quite disturbing graphic detail. There's a particular instance near the beginning that felt unnecessarily descriptive and nearly put me off.
Once the action gets started, the pace doesn't let up. You will be flicking through pages at a rate of knots.
The ending wasn't wrapped up, and for me, that's frustrating. I like things to be tied up neatly in a bow.
This is a sci-fi action thriller, and while it's not something I ordinarily would reach out for, im glad I gave it a chance. I'd definitely recommend and would read more by this author.

This was a fascinating journey exploring humanity, flawed characters, ethics and morals, and what happens when a virus that gives superhuman abilities begins to spread.
The main character Chris Taylor is drowning in his grief, he has lost his wife, is struggling day to day, and has suicidal thoughts. He believes he is being kept alive for some divine purpose yet to materialise, and until then is living only for his dog.
Events begin to spiral when Chris becomes ill and finds himself with unexplainable superhuman powers and becomes ground zero. His doctor friend runs some tests and it soon escalates to a national health emergency to try and contain the unknown virus and understand it.
With new abilities appearing from the infected, it becomes a battle of containment and to avoid anarchy.
This story leads you on a contemplative journey that makes you think about pandemics, what it would be like to be superhuman, and the darkness of humanity, greed and power.
The story is filled with plenty of suspense, intrigue, action and high stakes, and is a great blend of sci-fi, fantasy and thriller.

This is the second book of Russell’s I’ve read now and I really did enjoy this one. It wasn’t what I was expecting at all (to be honest I wasn’t sure what to expect) but this was so interesting and quite thrilling. I was crying right at the start of the book to! Absolutely devastated kind of cry too! As the book went on I was more and more intrigued about how things turned out and how things became quite intense at points. And I am a bit of a science girlie so I loved how the explanation of how viruses formed and worked through the body was explained quite well too. It also ended in a completely different way to what I was expecting and I was sitting on the edge of my seat. In the last couple of chapters. This is for the people that love a good sci-fi/thriller type read. There’s plenty of action and never a dull moment throughout the book. It’s worth the read for sure and I hope you guys enjoy it. I’ll pop a link up in my stories and save it as a highlight so you guys can grab yourselves a copy if you fancy it. I’d definitely recommend you give it a go!

Set in a dystopian world. MMC Chris Taylor contracts a new virus which gives him super human strength. The virus starts spreading fast, no matter how hard the government try to contain it and all hell breaks loose.
Chris is already struggling with severe depression following the loss of his wife, then he is hit with loss after loss and crippled with guilt. You’re taken on an emotional rollercoaster of despair with him.
I really enjoyed the concept of this story. It’s definitely not your average super hero novel. It shows how lethal humanity can be when they want something they can’t and definitely shouldn’t have. It’s dark, gory and action packed.
Overall, this was a solid 4 stars for me. I did really enjoy it but the only thing stopping me from rating higher was I had to google a lot of the adverbs/adjectives as they were definitely not in my vocabulary, so that disrupted the flow of the book for me.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the cover and blurb of this book. I liked the writing style and the story. I did like Taylor the main character. I really felt for Taylor. I loved Herodotus the dog. I liked Nate. I really didn't like Tim at all. I did like the fight between Tim and Taylor. I do hope there is more to come as I feel it isn't the end.

Turns out being ill has never been so good!
I inhaled this book! Science, violence, twists, turns, friendship and carnage, addiction, politics, power and a pandemic.
Fast paced and fascinating but also full of side effects and a very high body count, the hero virus is a rollercoaster ride!
Anyway, I’m off for a lay down - I’m not feeling so good….

A virus with unknown origins gives humans superpowers but just how far will people go to get these?
This theme is the central storyline for this book and it also deals with how much power can corrupt people.
Really well paced, great dialogue and although cliché
at points this book was highly enjoyable and I read it all in 3.5hours, I didn’t want to put it down. I was invested!
My only criticism is that the only power given to a woman that was discussed with any detail literally made my eyes roll. It felt like a cop out. Be aware that there is a particularly brutal dog death and suicidal thoughts in the book too.

Science-based superheroes with a heady dose of reality fill the pages of this incredible spectacle.
The characters are great, from the scientist Norbury wanting the next big discovery, to the main hero, Gen1 Taylor.
Marvel or DC fans unite, this is simply amazing.

The book was fantastically paced, every chapter always leaving me wanting more and I flew through it in only a couple of days. The plot is very clever and raises some thought-provoking questions about powers and the greater good. The characters were excellent and all very believable.
The one warning I would give is that this reads very much like a thriller so people who are used to fantasy and sci-fi may have a bit of a shock when they start. Even so the writing is superb and this is well worth a read!

This is the first book that I have read by the author. I was hooked from the very first page and kept reading until the end as I wanted to know what happened. I loved the author's writing style, which took me through a rollercoaster of emotions, especially being a dog lover and Chris's dog dies at the beginning. All sensitive subjects were handled with care. I found the story easy to follow, fast paced and had a great mix of characters. Overall, a brilliant novel that I highly recommend to other readers.

This thriller/sci-fi/action story follows Chris Taylor, a man who feels he's lost it all and is struggling to continue with life. Recently widowed his only companion is Herodotus, his faithful Labrador but when the worst happens and his dog gets sick and dies it turns out to be a new beginning for Chris as he's also ill but he recovers from the virus to find he's received incredible power.
Chris is still getting used to his power when the situation escalates quickly. The virus spreads, killing many but giving powers to those that survive.
The authorities desperately try to contain the situation with Dr Norbury and his team rapidly working on a cure.
Trying to stop a pandemic seems an impossible task when people are willing to risk their lives to gain powers and if those abilities are strong and in the wrong hands then the situation is going to get a whole lot worse!

Just when Chris thinks he has nothing left to live for he wakes up one morning completely transformed. He has gained super powers.
Dumper has written a fun, entertaining and heartwarming superhero novel. It has action, mystery and intrigue.
Dumper has an incredible talent, also seen in his last novel, for creating larger than life but very believable characters.
Taking what he sees and hears from the real world and transforming into a very powerful message through his writing. You never feel like you are being talked down to, it feels like a guided tour.
‘The Hero Virus’ shows us the greed, the jealousy and the power that the human race has. It goes above and beyond to show us how far humans will go to make themselves feel special and be better than anyone else, even if that means hurting people you love.

Warning! The dog dies! This isn't a spoiler because it's in the synopsis - I just never read them! However, it happens early on, and I soon got past that tragic event as the story picked up pace and, despite the murder, death, blood, guts and gore, I absolutely could not get enough, I was eager to find out what happened, and those pages just weren't turning fast enough!
I had no idea how I'd feel about this book, Russell is a new-to-me author and the subject, a little outside my comfort zone. There definitely aren't any cute bookshops and happy-ever-afters in The Hero Virus! Think thriller, crime and suspense with a dystopian undertone, the world looks like it's going to end, and that might just well be due to just one man. I enjoyed it from beginning to end, it's fast-paced, entertaining, has great character development and I didn't know how it was all going to end. At one point I thought there might be a sequel coming. The author wrapped it all up nicely though, but there is definitely scope for another book if the characters fancy another outing! Oh, and that last sentence..... I thought that might happen!
I'm looking forward to going back and reading Russell's first novel, Britannia Rises - I just hope that no dogs die!

I had no idea how I'd feel about this book, Russell is a new-to-me author and the subject, a little outside my comfort zone. There definitely aren't any cute bookshops and happy-ever-afters in The Hero Virus! Think thriller, crime and suspense with a dystopian undertone, the world looks like it's going to end, and that might just well be due to just one man. I enjoyed it from beginning to end, it's fast-paced, entertaining, has great character development and I didn't know how it was all going to end. At one point I thought there might be a sequel coming. The author wrapped it all up nicely though, but there is definitely scope for another book if the characters fancy another outing! Oh, and that last sentence..... I thought that might happen!

This was a fantastic read. As it was a new author for me, I didn’t quite know what to expect but I loved it! I thought the whole concept of a hero virus was quite clever. It was, however, something that could be manipulated and used for all the wrong reasons as demonstrated so well in the book. I really liked Chris, the main character. He had strong Reacher vibes for me and constantly battled with his conscience over his actions. I felt that the book made a strong statement about the state of the world we live in today in many ways. Dr Norbury with his desire to create super soldiers and Tim with his desire for more power were prime examples. What I would say about Tim is that even though he became addicted to gaining powers and did lots of unspeakable things, I felt his plan of wanting to make the world a better place for everyone wasn’t completely misguided. I felt like each of the three main characters Chris, Tim and Dr Norbury, all thought their actions would lead to something better for everyone. There was plenty of action, fighting and gore, but it wasn’t offensive or too descriptive. The writing was excellent and presented in a smooth, easy flowing style that was very enjoyable. I liked this book even though it’s not my usual genre. I could easily see this book being played out on the big screen.

In The Hero Virus, we follow Chris Taylor, a man who's lost it all after becoming widowed, and is struggling to cope, so he takes solace in his his faithful companion, his trusty dog, a Labrador named Herodotus. But tragedy strikes again when Herodotus gets sick and dies. Chris also gets sick, but recovers from the deadly virus to discover he now has extraordinary powers. It isn't long before he finds he's not the only one with such powers. The virus killed many, but also left some alive with incredible powers.
Whilst the authorities try to contain the situation, there are some that are willing to risk their lives in order to gain powers, and things begin to get out of control.

So all in all, an enjoyable read. It's a Sci-fi/ action thriller with a fast paced storyline and not a dull moment to be had.
I found Chris to be a well rounded, relatable character and the world in which he inhabits was believable and easy to imagine in the mind.
For me, the ending just great, and probably leaves the story open for a second novel, which I hope will happen.

To say I underestimated this book is also a huge understatement.
The book follows Chris Taylor who is hanging onto life by a thread and then what is left of his world is also taken from him leads to discover that changes his whole world, and the world around him.
A virus everyone wants, and what lengths will they go to get it? Who can you trust?
A truly unique and interesting storyline that’s fast pace grips you from the very start and takes you on a ride of superhuman abilities, betrayal, twist and turns in a dystopian world where everyone wants what Chris has!
Written in a third person POV the book
I absolutely bloody loved this book.
The pacing was fast from the start, but didn’t miss connecting us with the characters, I was crying within the first 10 chapters!
This book has it all emotions, action, humour, intrigue, dystopian vibes with the superhuman elements and virus story had me turning page after page. So well written and gripping, I’d have liked to have seen more female characters play more of a role in the story to balance things a little but it didn’t take away from an epic cleverly written sci-fi dystopian read. I would highly recommend this book to anyone!

Have you gotten your bearings after the last pandemic yet?
Now imagine a new pandemic. With a new virus that everyone wants, and most are willing to kill for, to be infected.
Chris Taylor has had a couple of rough months. I would, too, if those things happened to me. My heart just breaks for him in the first few chapters.
After contracting a virus, Chris finds himself feeling good.
Actually, he is feeling more than good.
"Other than flying, he was, in fact, Superman.“
Realising that this is not entirely normal, he sees a doctor friend, and before we know it, the authorities swoop in, lead by Dr. Mike Norbury. Uuups. How did that happen?
We follow Chris on his journey to his destiny. For better or for worse, what a journey it is!
I enjoyed the pschycology in this book. How different people react to the same thing. Will they use it for good? Or will they be selfish? Will they try to do bad, bad things to gain whatever they want to gain?
I would like to think I would do good with my power.

4.5 stars rounded up. I was very lucky to receive an ARC of this book from the author, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Having interacted a little with him since receiving the proof, it is very clear that his work is a reflection of his own love of reading - the writing is artistic in places, and the plot moves very quickly; no time is wasted.
I loved the premise of this book, which is like if The Boys and Covid-19 had a crossover episode. An immense amount of story is contained within the book's pages: it would easily be an entire series of a - highly binge-worthy - television show.
I made a note of one sentence from the early chapters of the book, which is not a spoiler: "Had one of his forgotten tasks, undertaken in the past four days, been to replace all the cutlery?" Out of context, this means very little, but in context, this was one of the funniest lines I've ever read.
This was an entertaining, quick, easy read, with a depressingly realistic idea of what a hero virus would end up doing to society.

I've been wanting to read a new genre, and this sicfi action thriller is just what I was looking for.
Chris has recently lost his family they were tragically killed. He wakes up every day not understanding his purpose of life and has suicidal thoughts.
All he has his loyal labrador beside him. He takes out every day for his walks and does the same route. One day, his dog finds a stream of water and contracts a virus. Sadly, he doesn't make it !
Chris goes back to the same location and has contracted this virus and wakes up after a few days, and he has gained super natural abilities.
This virus is spreading quickly and needs to be contained. Dr. Norbury and his team try to find a cure. Many lives are lost, but many are willing to sacrifice their lives to gain these powers.
It's a great fast-paced book with short, snappy chapters. The characters were complex and well developed throughout the story.

This is a new author to me and I really wasn't sure what to expect, but the cover and premise really had me intrigued.
Our main character, Chris, feels he has nothing to live for after recently losing his family - but he carries on to care for his trusty Labrador companion.
When the dog becomes ill and dies, Chris takes solace in the fact that he has also contracted the same new virus.
However, Chris recovers and discovers that he's gained special powers - now everyone wants the virus and will do anything to get it....
This was such a unique concept and I loved that it deals with a pandemic in reverse.
As we all know from recent events, a new virus can cause panic and chaos - but here, instead of avoiding the virus, everyone is out to try and catch it!
Chris was a very relatable character who was out in a strange situation and I loved the way his story developed.
This was really well written and I found it really easy to read and get sucked into.
Not being one of my favourite genres, I wondered whether I'd struggle to get to grips with it, but it was really easy to connect with and follow the storyline and the science involved.
The chapters were nice and short which had me racing through the book and grabbing just another chapter each time I sat to read.

This book was amazing. On a very surface level you could call it a book about superheroes. But actually it deals with many, many topics; from life, death, humanity, fate and addiction. One minute I'd be chuckling away at something then I'd be caught up in a huge action scene and then I'd be having deep thoughts about life and humans 😅 it was such a fun ride.
Chris Taylor, recently widowed and not wanting to be alive anymore, has one thing in his life now... his faithful Labrador. When his companion suffers a violent demise he really has nothing to live for. Then he becomes ill and wakes up days later... feeling better than ever?! and he now has powers!
Enter the hero virus... the more people the virus starts to effect the more other people want to get infected to get the powers and they will stop at nothing.
How do you stop a pandemic when there are people who will kill for the virus? How do you stop people getting effected when they're willing to die for it? How do you stop the infected when they're super powered?
I loved the ethical conundrums in it. I loved seeing all the wild and wonderful powers some people got and what they chose to do with it. I also really enjoyed the characters, particularly Chris and Norbury and Tim (although not sure I was meant to like them all 😅 but they were interesting)
I could easily visualise a world where this was possible... and that's actually terrifying. I loved the ending and I thoroughly enjoyed the writing style. I'll be keeping an eye out for more from this author for sure.

This book definitely gets you thinking! The main character loses his wife and faithful dog within the first few pages and he falls into depression, using a magnum to decide how his day starts.
A mysterious illness that leaves you confused on waking, sometimes losing 3-4 days to then find out you have an ability. Unsure if that's a good thing to have or not! The people involved in this all want to be infected with the virus so they can see what ability they receive. Some of them are useful, some not so but some people had telekinesis amongst others. The power the virus gives is crazy! Power mad people, gambling with their lives - bearing in mind there is no cure as yet as it's a new strain.
Individuals are stronger once infected, others see that and want in on the action. I binged the last half of this book and it's taken me a bit of time to think of a review as I keep thinking about the book! I really liked how fast paced this book is and enjoyed the concept. I can imagine how power crazy people would get over this virus!

This is about Chris who has recently been widowed and is hanging onto life by a thread. One day he takes his dog for a walk and he soon discovers he has contracted a mysterious illness that gives him superpowers. This has to be one of the best sci-fi/ sci-fi horror books I have read, Chris is such an interesting character, the side characters are just as brilliantly developed too. With the virus spreading Chris lives through the effects of people dying to contract the virus and misusing it for their own gains.
I loved the way this was written, it was logical and the realism of human behaviour in this situation with the fantastical superpower virus was a really great combination. When the story got going I was hooked it was incredibly difficult to have to put this down when real life needed me 😂 Chris changed so much from the start to the finish as the events unfolded, I really enjoyed going along the journey with him, to see him going from this down in the dumps man to finding his purpose in life.
I loved the way this was written, it was logical and the realism of human behaviour in this situation with the fantastical superpower virus was a really great combination. Book review The hero virus 🦠 by Russel Dumper
The lovely Russell send me a copy of his new book to read and I cannot praise it enough. It was absolutely fantastic!! I really enjoyed reading this book which was quite different to my usual reads. Just from reading the blurb I knew this was right up my street, who doesn’t dream of having superpowers!? I know I did as a child. Chris Taylor, recently widowed and his life falling apart contracted a virus alongside his dog who sadly didn’t make it. Chris is struggling in life with nothing left to live for when he realizes he has a unique gift, after contracting a virus that gives him super human strength. New cases break out, all with different gifts in each of the cases. This book is full of twists and turns, science and power! It was really fast paced and I couldn’t wait to see what happened next. Things escalated quickly which led to power battles and more and more people wanting to catch this virus that will do anything to get it.
What a fantastic author, I really enjoyed Russell’s writing and his vivid descriptions. It was very clear to picture everything is such detail. I cannot wait to read more from you, thanks so much for reaching out. It has been an absolute pleasure reading! Definitely a 5 star worthy read ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
