Karamsar dünya görüşünün yanı sıra bireyciliğiyle de nam salan Schmidt, gündelik dili dönüştürerek kendine has bir üslup, ayrıca sözcüklerin gerçek anlamlarını ve birbirleriyle bağlantılarını ortaya koyduğunu düşündüğü kendi yazım kurallarını yaratmıştır. 1949’da yayımlandığında büyük heyecan yaratan Leviathan ya da Dünyaların En İyisi, yazarın ölmüş bir Alman subayın günlüğü şeklinde kaleme aldığı öyküsüdür.

İkinci Dünya Savaşı’nın son günlerinde, kayıp asker ve sivillerden oluşan bir grup insan buharlı bir trende buluşur. Bazıları Tanrı’ya inancını korurken kimi de yazgısına boyun eğmiştir. Ancak cepheden; insanın kötülüğünün damgasını vurduğu bu dünyadan kaçma çabası umutsuz bir girişimdir. Dünyayı Leviathan adlı canavar yaratmış, onun yırtıcı doğası insanoğluna geçmiştir.

1951 tarihli Kara Aynalar’da ise Üçüncü Dünya Savaşı’nın yol açtığı kıyametin ardından sağ kalan bir adam yeryüzünde tek başına dolaşır durur. Bütün kurallar askıya alınmış, bütün yasaklar kalkmıştır. Yedi yıllık yalnızlıktan sonra, bu nükleer savaştan sağ kurtulan tek kişinin kendisi olmadığını fark eder.

Arno Schmidt, in full Arno Otto Schmidt, (born January 18, 1914, Hamburg-Hamm, Germany—died June 3, 1979, Celle), novelist, translator, and critic, whose experimental prose established him as the preeminent Modernist of 20th-century German literature.

With roots in both German Romanticism and Expressionism, he attempted to develop modern prose forms that correspond more closely to the workings of the conscious and subconscious mind and to revitalize a literary language that he considered debased by Nazism and war.

The influence of James Joyce and Sigmund Freud are apparent in both a collection of short stories, Kühe in Halbtrauer (1964; Country Matters), and, most especially, in Zettels Traum (1970; Bottom’s Dream)—a three-columned, more than 1,300-page, photo-offset typescript, centring on the mind and works of Poe. It was then that Schmidt developed his theory of “etyms,” the morphemes of language that betray subconscious desires. Two further works on the same grand scale are the “novella-comedy” Die Schule der Atheisten (1972; School for Atheists) and Abend mit Goldrand (1975; Evening Edged in Gold), a dream-scape that has as its focal point Hiëronymus Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights and that has come to be regarded as his finest and most mature work.

Schmidt was a man of vast autodidactic learning and Rabelaisian humour. Though complex and sometimes daunting, his works are enriched by inventive language and imbued with a profound commitment to humanity’s intellectual achievements.

This was my third (and fourth) encounter with the workѕ of Arno Schmidt. I’m reading a two volume collection of stories/novellas/novels called Geschichten aus Deutschland (Stories from Germany). In it the stories are ordered chronologically by the time they are set. But I rather read them in the order of publication. I figure, especially with Schmidt, that you’d achieve a better understanding that way (I actually made a mistake and read Scenes from the Life of a Faun first and found it had to follow.

These two stories, however, are much more readable … almost like ordinary novels. And it turned out that they make a great pairing if you read them both in succession. I think Schmidt’s prose is unbeatable especially when it comes to neologisms and efficiency. I know he even changes up a few gears in his later works, but even in these early ones the style is simply superb. It’s a “love-or-hate” style though [so you’ve been warned!], and I don’t know how much of it survives translation … (not too much I’m afraid).

İki öyküden oluşan kitabın James Joyce tarzını çağrıştıran, lakin bütünüyle kendine özgü bir tarzda yazıldığını söyleyerek başlamak istiyorum yorumuma. Yazarın okuduğum ilk, başarılı çevirmenin ise Mutsuzluk Zamanlarında Mutluluk'tan sonra okuduğum ikinci kitabı.
Kitap için iki öykü dedim aslında ama bunlardan ikincisinin daha çok novellayı andırdığını ifade etmeliyim. Yazarın Friedrich Nietzsche başta olmak üzere Arthur Schopenhauer gibi pek çok isimden esintiler taşıyan kitabında her ne kadar Nietzsche'ye ara ara sert eleştiriler yapsa da kitabın ilk öyküsünün "üstinsan" ikinci öyküsünün ise "son insan" üzerine olduğu açık. Nietzsche okurları bu iki deyimin ne anlama geldiğini bilir. Bilmeyenler ise bunlarla ilgili olarak Böyle Söyledi Zerdüşt kitabına göz atabilir.

İlk öykümüz, bir tren yolculuğunda karakterlerimizin ağzından evrenin hikayesini anlatır. Burada son derece güçlü bir ironi saklıdır. Zira felsefenin, bilimin yanında yukarıdan bombaların yağdığı gerçeği vardır.
İnsançocuğunun yaşadığı dramı çok iyi özetleyen bu öyküde, muhteşem bir tasvir yeteneği göze çarpar. Yere düşen bombaların havada oluşturdukları etkileri öyle güzel anlatır ki yazar, adeta bir senfoni orkestrası dinliyormuşsunuzcasına çok yönlü tasvirlerle mest olursunuz. Aslında anlatılan şey nihayetinde trajiktir fakat yazarın tarzında muzip bir umursamazlık vardır. Derin bir karamsarlığı ustaca gizleyen bu muzip tarz kitabın ikinci öyküsünde de hakimdir. Bir atom savaşından sonrasında geçen distopik bu öyküde her şey sanki yolundaymışçasına bir umarsızlık vardır baş karakterde. Bununla birlikte, içten içe dünyanın bu sessiz halini seviyor hatta bu şekilde mutlu gibidir.

20. yüzyılın en önemli Alman yazarlarından biri olan Schmidt Savaş döneminde 36 yaşındadır. Muhtemelen de bu Savaşın karamsarlığında rolü büyüktür.

Leviathan, Arno Schmidt's short novella (18 pages), takes place on May 30, 1945 where the narrator, a German sergeant, and a number of other men, women, and children, leaves the city of Berlin in a train's freight car.

A point of historical context: the Battle of Berlin took place from April 20 to May 2, 1945, and it ended with the fall of Berlin to the Soviet Red Army. On April 30, down in his underground bunker, Hitler committed suicide. Winston Churchill would later write, “The bodies were burnt in the courtyard, and Hitler’s funeral pyre, with the din of the Russian guns growing ever louder, made a lurid end of the Third Reich.”

This gloomy ragtag bunch hunker down in the ice cold freight car as it haltingly rumbles along, the train intermittently the target of Russian bullets . . . and eventually worse. Günter (the name I'll give the narrator/sergeant) reflects, “Actually it's madness for us even to want to pull out; it may be that 500 yards ahead the tracks have been blown up.”

There's quite the assortment of German humanity represented here. Anne Wolf, a good-looking gal Günter had a crush on back in his schooldays. A pious (natch!) pastor offering prayers and proclaiming the goodness of the Lord. The pastor's wife and seven children (“at least somebody has trust in God!”). Several oldsters, one geezer knowledgeable of Schopenhauer and another cursing the Führer, “Hitler, the no-good bastard!” Two boys in Hitler Youth uniforms (“didn't want to help us “flee” at first, naturally”).

Icy winds sweep in the freight car (the door doesn't close completely). The freezing German gaggle are caught in the grip of fear and pain. Yet, Günter finds the energy to discuss cosmology with the old Schopenhauer enthusiast. And when the pastor chimes in with “God is infinite”, Günter retorts, “You're mistaken as well; there was once a demon of fundamentally cruel and diabolical nature, but he too no longer exists.” Günter then elaborates on the nature of the universe with his knowledge of mathematics and physics. A reader familiar with these areas of study and Gnosticism will find this section of the novella especially piquant.

And, oh, those Hitler Youth. Günter sees them as “true children of the Leviathan (Thou art my beloved son . . .); evil iron and deadly fire: ah yes, they've turned out well.” Echoes of what the German author would write in Dark Mirrors: the monster Leviathan passed on its predatory nature to us humans. The full title of this novella is Leviathan or The Best of Worlds. Arno Schmidt's irony runneth over.

Blood and violence aplenty as we turn the pages. Likewise, with Günter's philosophizing: “Nietzsche shared much of the blame, too, the power-worshiper; he taught Nazi-tricks, really (“Thou shall love war more than peace . . . “), the garrulous bastard; he's the father to Breker's professional soldiers, who would starve if you took away their rocks and clubs, because “they just never learned better.” He and Plato were grand malefactors (and ignoramuses besides : cf. The natural sciences).”

Toward the end of the tale, Anne comes over beside Günter, who feels as gaunt and drained as Harry Haller. This reference to Harry Haller the Steppenwolf proved too strong for me (I LOVE Hesse's novel). When I spotted Harry Haller mentioned as I flipped through Collected Novellas (published by Dalkey Press), I simply had to read Leviathan as my next Arno Schmidt. I'm glad I did. Leviathan is a powerful, moving work of fiction offering keen insight into one of the darkest chapters of European history, a work worth any reader's time.

Nichilista? Altroché!

Difficile guardare al futuro con ottimismo per chi, come Arno Schmidt, ha partecipato alla II Guerra mondiale nelle fila dell'esercito tedesco, avendone vissuto in prima persona gli orrori e le aberrazioni. Il cinismo è la cifra di un autore che non nutre più alcuna fiducia nell'uomo e nell'umanità e che sembra solo attendere ed auspicare la fine della storia.
Leviatano è un libro durissimo, il resoconto diaristico di due giorni di viaggio in treno di un gruppo di sbandati slesiani in fuga dall'esercito russo. Una scrittura per frammenti: immagini, gesti, colori. Parole appuntite come spade, verbi ripetute, frasi secche e condensate all'osso che si alternano con ritmo sincopato restituendo perfettamente l'atmosfera cupa del momento ("Il lungo crepuscolo. Trascinare. Buio bisbiglia, al modo di un pittore che mescoli incerto un colore notturno. Trascinare. Giallo polveroso. Trascinare. Rosso fuligginoso. Trascinare. Da una finestra sul vuoto ammiccò pieno il primo astro; grasso, sfacciatamente giallo, un banchiere. Trascinare. Il cielo si fece chiaro e promise freddo in arrivo.")
I protagonisti sono uomini e donne che si aggirano intorno ai binari di luoghi spettrali come morti-viventi, sonnambuli che galleggiano in un presente fragilissimo, sospeso tra un passato troppo lontano e un futuro inesistente. L'hic et nunc di Arno Schmidt è provvisorietà, pura sopravvivenza senza margini per la speranza. Nulla sembra avere senso: Dio, le leggi che regolano la materia, i principi della fisica e della filosofia, le cose del mondo.
Un mondo alla fine del mondo, dove vivere o morire è solo questione di fortuna.

Rezension bezieht sich nur auf „Leviathan“.

Es ist immer schwierig, das erste gelesene Werk eines Literaten zu bewerten. Ohne Kenntnisse über das Gesamtwerk und die behandelten Themen steht ein Einzelwerk isoliert da, lässt sich nicht einordnen. Auf der anderen Seite bietet eine unvoreingenommene Herangehensweise natürlich auch Vorteile, man kann das Dargestellte ohne Kenntnisse und Vorurteile interpretieren.

Alles was ich über Arno Schmidt wusste, ist, dass er über die deutsche Nachkriegszeit schreibt. Mehr nicht. Der Rest der folgenden Rezension ist unvoreingenommene Interpretation.

Der Titel: Leviathan oder DIE BESTE DER WELTEN. Der Leviathan hat zwei Grundbedeutungen. Er steht einerseits für das Seeungeheuer der jüdischen Mythologie. Der Leviathan wird dort als bösartiges Seeungeheuer dargestellt. In der christlichen Lehre wird er schließlich zum Symbol des Teufels, der gleichzeitig für Chaos, aber auch Sünde steht.

Aus diesem Sinnbild leitet sich schließlich die zweite Grundbeutung ab, nämlich der Leviathan als Metapher für den Staat bei Thomas Hobbes. Der Leviathan ist die Ordnung des Staates und steht im Gegensatz zum Naturzustand (der durch ein weiteres Ungeheuer, den Behemoth, verkörpert wird).

Der Titel Leviathan mag zu Beginn nicht klar sein, ich werde später noch einmal darauf zurück kommen.

Die Form: Arno Schmidt hat für dieses Werk eine interessante Form des Schreibens verwendet. Die Beschreibung der Geschehnisse in der Welt werden ganz normal dargestellt, das Innenleben und die Gedanken des Erzählers sind in Klammern gesetzt. Diese duale Struktur funktioniert erstaunlich gut und besitzt auch sprachliche Distinktionen. Während der Stil der Erzählung meines Erachtens expressionistisch-realistisch stattfindet, so steckt in den inneren Gedankengängen sowohl schwarzer Humor als auch ein zynischer Blick auf die Welt aus den Augen eines offensichtlichen Misanthropen.

Einen besonderen Blick bietet die Einleitung ins Werk in Form eines englischen Briefes. Da schreibt ein Jonny an seine Freundin Betty am 20. Mai 1945 (also knapp nach Kriegsende) aus einem zerstörten Berlin über das Ende des Krieges in Europa.

Dieser kurze Brief ist interessant, stellt er doch die einzige weitere Quelle der Erzählung neben dem aus der Ich-Perspektive erzählenden Erzähler dar. Damit wird quasi noch vor dem Beginn der Geschichte eine Erweiterung der Perspektive vorgenommen, vor allem da Jonny auf Englisch schreibt und Amerikaner ist. Diese nur im Brief vorkommende Figur stellt somit eine positive Alternativwelt zur dreckigen Realität des Erzählers und des deutschen Volkes dar.

Der Inhalt: Die Rahmenhandlung ist schnell erzählt und findet chronologisch ablaufend innerhalb von weniger als 48 Stunden statt, beginnend am Nachmittag 14. Februar 1945. Der Erzähler trifft zu Beginn auf einem Bahnhofsgelände ein. Berlin ist umkämpft. In einem Waggon befinden sich bereits eine Reihe von Schutzsuchenden, Soldaten und Zivilisten, darunter Anne, in die der Erzähler scheinbar immer noch vermisst ist. Es gelingt, eine Lokomotive wieder fahrtüchtig zu machen und die kleine Gruppe macht sich auf den Weg. Unterbrochen wird die Reise immer wieder von Räumarbeiten, einem Angriff auf den Zug und anderen Unannehmlichkeiten. Am Morgen des dritten Tages schließlich will der Zug ein Viadukt überqueren, dabei bricht jedoch die Lokomotive ein. Da hinten am Zug ein Schwellenreißer angebracht war (der die Schwellen der Schienen zerstört hat) gab es auch kein zurück mehr. Die Gemeinschaft ist gestrandet, es gibt keinen Ausweg.

Zur Sprache: Die Sprache wechselt fließend von einer nüchternen Betrachtung der traurigen Realität bis hin zu mehrsprachigen Introspektionen voller Sprachwitz. Auch die zynische Weltsicht und die Abscheu des Erzählers wird in der Sprache sehr gut transportiert.

Metaerzählung: Das spannende an der kurzen Erzählung ist meines Erachtens die Interpretation des Titels. Hierzu dient meines Erachtens eine Metaerzählung, nämlich die Dialoge zwischen dem Erzähler und einem alten Mann. Der Erzähler erklärt dem alten Mann seine Thesen vom unbegrenzten Raum, seiner Ausdehnung und der anschließend folgenden Kontraktion. Diese wissenschaftliche These steht eng im Zusammenhang mit dem laut Erzähler nahenden Leviathan. Der Leser kann sich bereits denken was damit gemeint sein kann, aber der Erzähler wird noch deutlicher, indem er von mehreren möglichen Leviathanen („es mag viele Wesen seiner Größenordnung und unter ihnen auch gute, weiße, englische geben.“) spricht, aber ihrer (also der Deutschen) sei der Teufel:

„Um das Wesen des besagten Dämons zu beurteilen müssen wir uns außer uns und in uns umsehen.“

Hier schneidet Arno Schmidt offen die Schuldfrage an (die auch an weiteren Textstellen immer wieder auftaucht). Auch die unterschiedlichen Figuren tragen das Ihre dazu bei, etwa die beiden Hitlerjungen mit ihren Panzerfäusten, die die ganzen „Pazifisten und Verräter“ ins KZ schicken wollen und die an einen Geheimplan des Führers denken (ebenso wie die Soldaten). Die Zivilisten hingegen verdammen den Krieg, aber es ist zu spät. Das Urteil ist bereits gefällt, Deutschland gerichtet.

Ein interessanter Zusammenhang mit dem Leviathan bietet ein weiteres Symbol, das in der Handlung regelmäßig auftaucht: der Schnee. Der Erzähler erzählt davon, dass es immer kälter wird, der Schneefall wird immer dichter. Schnee als gefrorenes Wasser ist das Element des Leviathans. Die Abkühlung deutet also gleichzeitig das nahende Ende der Gemeinschaft (das man kommen sieht) als auch das Nahen und Erstarken des Leviathans an.

Lediglich der Untertitel des Werkes bleibt mir mehrdeutig. Was genau Arno Schmidt mit der „besten aller Welten“ meint ist nicht eindeutig. Ist damit in den Worten des Erzählers die Welt der Zukunft, nach Verschwinden der Menschen, gemeint? Oder ist die „beste aller Welten“ bereits zeitlich nahe, nämlich mit dem Untergang des deutschen Reiches als tabula rasa?

Wie dem auch sei. Eine kurze Erzählung wie die vorliegende derartig interpretierbar zu machen und gleichzeitig sprachlich interessant zu schreiben ist eine Kunst, die Arno Schmidt in diesem Fall sehr gut gelungen ist.

"Leviathan" was good (feeling a strong 3/5 - weak 4/5), but holy! "Schwarze Spiegel" (The Black Mirrors) was just near perferct, imo - beautifully written, witty and suprisingly touching.

Diese zwei Aufsätze von Arno Schmidt begeistern durch einen Bruch mit so vielen Konventionen von klassischen Kurzgeschichten. Aus dem Moment herausgerissene Szenen mit sprunghaften Übergängen und willkürlich platzierte Denkeinschübe schaffen eine sehr exklusive Art von Literatur.
Gewisse Philosophie Basics und lateinische Sprechbeherrschung sind jedoch zu empfehlen :)

Die beiden Erzählungen lassen einen etwas verloren zurück. Die erste Erzählung handelt vom Leviathan als die weltbeherrschende böswillige Chaosmacht, die riesig aber begrenzt ist. Sie lässt einen nachdenken über die Abgründe der Menschheit. Auch schwarze Spiegel strotzt nicht gerade vor Fröhlichkeit. Ich fand die Geschichte aber unglaublich berührend, wie sie unterschiedliche Facetten des Gefühls von machtloser Einsamkeit in einem hervorrufen konnte.

Half a story half a philosophical treatise.
both of them are nothing special however. I was looking forward to this text and the edition with the original handwriting and the typeset version is really cool.
However the story is flat and seems to serve the philosophical content more than itself. But this might be a bit unfair, it‘s not that bad, there even is a small love story of sorts but the best part was the open ending which is quite the opposite of a happy ending. This bring me to the philosophical part. The ending really helps to drive his point home that there is no god, and the Leviathan is in control, always. The Leviathan is basically all the bad in the world. But it doesn’t feel nihilistic - there might even be a possibility to fight the Leviathan when it becomes small enough…
Then there is a lot of talk about four demeaning reduced to three and the universe and everything in it but it‘s too much to just make a point about something in the story.
It is a strange balance because the story part seems so concise at times while the philosophical part does not.

dünne hohe Ruten beben im Wind, der über'n morschen Schnee seufzt, eine Kiefer federt gleichmäßig hin und her, man huschte und kauerte hinterm Gesträuch. Ich sah die Sterne, winzige lodernde Gesichter, kalkweiß und hellblau, Ursa majoris, die kleine, dazwischen der Drache, die Lichtschleier am Horizont murrten unaufhörlich, wie gut, dass es noch eine Unendlichkeit gibt.

Um das Wesen des besagten Dämons zu beurteilen, müssen wir uns außer uns und in uns umsehen. Wir selbst sind ja ein Teil von ihm, was muß also Er erst für ein Satan sein?

Zur entgültigen Klarstellung: das wahrhaft schöne, wenn auch nicht originelle, Liebet euch untereinander, als lebendig wirksame Praxis, hat stets selbstverständliche Billigung und Förderung aller Redlichen erfahren und wird es immer. Nie aber die wertlosen erkenntnistheoretischen Ambitionen der Christenfibel, nie der völlig willkürlich aufgebaute Machtapparat der Kirche und dessen beispiellos fürchterlicher jahrhundertelanger geistiger Terror.

Hat mir bis auf wenige (nachvollziehbare!) Ansätze überhaupt nicht gefallen. Vielleicht fehlt mir da einfach der Draht zur Philosophie, aber ich hatte den Eindruck, der Autor erwartet, dass man in seine (verquere) Gedanken blicken kann, dass man alle Andeutungen verstehen wird und vor allem, Latein, Französisch und welche Sprache er auch sonst so verwendet haben mag, versteht.
Ein einziges Durcheinander wirrer, zusammenhangsloser Satzfetzen, die aneinandergereiht wurden und teilweise nicht mal vernünftige, abgeschlossene Sätze bilden.
Leider reißen es die wenigen guten und verständlichen Stellen auch nicht mehr raus.
Gut, dass es nicht mehr Seiten waren, sonst hätte ich es frustriert wieder in die Bibliothek gebracht, ohne es zu Ende zu lesen.
