Unsure of her future within the Amish community, Beth Peachy arrives in Lancaster County to care for her ailing grandmother for the summer at her lake house. Yet with dementia threatening to steal away Mammi's memories, Beth's visit quickly evolves into an urgent quest for the answers to questions that her relatives seem determined to avoid. How can Beth possibly make a lifelong vow to the Amish church when her own family is concealing so much of the past from her?
Beth's childhood friend Danny Lapp faces his own dilemma as his ex-Amish older brother turns his back on their wholesome family upbringing, dishonoring his Plain heritage. Struggling to find some sort of connection with his brother despite their deep difference of opinion, Danny is determined to find a solution before church leadership becomes involved. As Beth and Danny reconnect and seek to help each other in the search for answers, they find themselves stirring up not only surprising revelations about the past, but questions about a possible future together.
Bestselling author Patricia Johns's latest novel is a can't-put-down mix of romance, family secrets, and life within the cloistered Amish community.
Patricia Johns has me fully invested in the lives of the Amish of Shepherd’s Hill. The stories keep getting better and better. This time, I was drawn into the lives of Beth Peachy, her grandmother Mammi, and Danny Lapp. But if you read the first book, don’t worry, you’ll still hear quite a bit from Tabitha Shrock and Jonas Peachy.
This novel is filled with family secrets, questions about roots, and emotional moments that not only pull you into the story but make you reflect on your own life. I liked that Beth’s struggle isn’t with God but with her community itself and whether that is where she wants to remain for the rest of her life. Danny’s love and devotion to God, his faith, and his family were touching and a testament to the way he was raised.
This story held me captive until the very end. As I turned the last few pages, my heart raced, eager for answers. If you want to read a book that captures your heart, then pick up Still Waters.
I was counting down the days for this book to arrive in the mail. I just had to return to Shepherds Hill!
This time, we’re following Beth Peachy as she returns to Lancaster County for the summer to care for her grandmother. Beth is at a crossroads... torn about whether to be baptized in the Amish faith. Her heart is full of questions, not just about her own beliefs, but also about long-buried family secrets her relatives have kept from her. Until she gets answers, she can’t make a decision. And then there’s Danny. He's already baptized, steady in his faith, and grappling with the pain of his brother's walking away from the church. Beth doesn’t want to add to his heartache with her uncertainty, but she can’t pretend to be ready when she’s not.
Still, I absolutely loved watching Beth and Danny reconnect. Their friendship slowly blossoms into something more, and even though defining their feelings is risky, it was the sweetest thing to watch.
It was wonderful to return to Shepherds Hill and catch up with the familiar side characters and the close-knit community. I'm especially eager to keep reading this series to see where things lead for a few characters whose stories feel far from over! The next book can't come fast enough! Total page turner, I am loving this series!
I received a complimentary copy. This review reflects my honest opinion.
Still Waters is the second book I have read written by Patricia Johns, and it did not disappoint. It is book two in The Amish of Shepherd’s Hill series, and it could be read as a standalone, but we get to revisit characters from the first book.
This book follows two different Amish characters: Beth Peachy and Danny Lapp, who have been friends for years. Beth is trying to learn more about her family history, but her Mammi (grandma) is being very closed about the past, while also dealing with Dementia. Beth is helping her Mammi as they get ready to move her in with Beth’s mom. Danny is dealing with his own family secrets when he discovers his brother, who has left the faith, has started talking about the Amish faith and twisting the truth on social media. I enjoyed the pacing of the book and trying to figure out the family secret.
I loved getting to check in with Tabitha and see her doing her veterinarian work as an Amish woman. She is having a hard time relating to the Amish woman, having returned after divorcing her husband. She is starting to find her place within the community, but is also having to face some hard aspects of being divorced.
Patricia Johns did a great job intertwining faith throughout the book.
*I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, which I received from the author. A positive review was not required. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
I’ve been thinking off and on about Tabitha Schrock since I finished Green Pastures – she’s such a unique character for a young Amish woman. Her layered history and different role in the community (a female veterinarian!) make it difficult for her to find her fit in Shepherd’s Hill, but her resiliency and warm heart are so admirable – not to mention her confidence in God’s grace. So even though Still Waters is primarily focused on Beth Peachy and Danny Lapp, I very much enjoyed getting to spend more time with Tabitha on these pages too. And ohhhhhhhh Jonas Peachy, you’re killing me!!! Jonas (Beth’s cousin) is in love with Tabitha but she can’t marry as long as her ex-husband is still alive, even if the jerk did cheat on her. Ugh I am solidly team Tabitha + Jonas but I also understand the complexities of their friendship, and wow Patricia Johns is doing such a great job of keeping me invested in their story arc across this series. I have no idea how she’s going to resolve this in a way that doesn’t make me want to throw the book across the room but I’m definitely along for the ride, come what may!
BUT… as I said… this story is mostly about Beth Peachy, her grandmother, their mysterious family secrets, and Danny Lapp – the boy across the lake and the childhood friend who claimed Beth’s heart long ago (and vice versa). I really liked getting to know Beth – she’s witty, smart, bighearted, and naturally curious. Like Tabitha, she has some unique interests and talents for an Amish young woman, and it was fun to see these two form a friendship as their paths crossed. Danny is such a sweetheart, and his enduring affection for Beth made my heart smile… even if he is a terrible letter-writer. I loved these two together, their history, and the contrast between Danny’s wholehearted embrace of the Amish life and Beth’s questions and uncertainties. Their respective (and complicated) family issues kept me further invested in their story, especially the mystery surrounding Beth’s dad that she can’t get her grandmother to talk about. It’s not a short read per se but it felt like a quick one regardless, thanks to Patricia Johns engaging voice and steady pacing, and I couldn’t put it down until I knew how things would play out for Danny and Beth.
Bottom Line: Still Waters by Patricia Johns is heartfelt, layered, and full of characters who feel like real people you’d want to sit and talk with over pie. But it’s not just the endearing personalities or compelling layers that make Still Waters such an absorbing read – it’s Patricia Johns’s storytelling voice too. She writes in a way that makes the pages glide by, balancing heart-tugging emotion with the perfect dose of humor and depth, and of course a little bit of swoon too. Honestly, the suppressed feelings between Jonas and Tabitha have my heart all tied up in knots over this series. So I was even more thankful for the sweet love story between Danny and Beth in this second book! Their romance, plus the explorations of family and faith, make this a book you’ll want to dive into as soon as possible.

Author Patricia Johns, is relatively new to me. I enjoy Amish fiction and was excited to read her current novel Still Waters, the second book in The Amish of Shepherd’s Hill series.
Beth Peachy came to help her aging paternal grandmother get ready to move in with her family. Beth has visited her grandmother many times and has made friends over the years. She is looking forward to seeing Danny Lapp again, it has been a while since they had seen each other and both are young adults now. Beth has been struggling and is not sure if she wants to remain a part of the Amish community. Her faith is strong, but she is not sure if she would be better able to pursue the thing she enjoys outside the community she was raised in.
Beth is hopeful that she can find out more about her Dad who had recently died. Questions that only her grandmother Mammi, who has dementia, can answer. All families have secrets, but time is running out for Beth to get to her questions answered.
Tabitha Schrock, first introduced in Green Pastures the first book in the series, has returned to her Amish roots. She is still trying to be accepted by the community, but with patience and perseverance she is hopeful that she can rebuild her life among family and friends. With her unique perspective Tabitha may be able to help Beth make the best choices for her life.
Still Waters was a lovely read. I enjoyed the characters and relationships with family, friends, neighbors, and the community. It was interesting to see the dynamics of the relationships and how the past has impacted the present. Even those secrets long ago hidden.
This story is made rich and full because of the characters and the relationships they have within the Amish community. The mystery that is unraveled makes the story even more interesting. The story draws you in and it was a very satisfying read. Faith is a part of the character’s lives and story. I appreciate that this is a clean novel. I loved reading this book, I didn’t want it to end. I highly recommend Still Waters by Patricia Johns. I look forward to reading many more of her books.
I would like to thank Patricia Johns and Bethany House Publishers for the opportunity to read a complimentary copy of Still Waters. I was under no obligation to give a favorable review.
I really enjoyed this story by a new-to-me author! First of all, Amish is a favorite genre I like to read in and secondly, I love the message of trying to find our place in the world but discovering the truth that wherever God has placed us is where we’ll find home.
Beth Peachy has a lot of unanswered questions that make her feel restless for something she thinks she longs for: freedom & opportunities in the English world she doesn’t have being Amish. Her family has never shared stories of her family, especially her Daet (dad), and she longs to know his history. She’s determined to find those answers when she stays with her Mammi (grandma) for the summer to help care for her. But will those answers satisfy her, especially when she begins to harbor feelings for a certain Amish man she’s known since childhood. Will love be enough to make her stay?
Danny Lapp is wholeheartedly Amish & content with Gott’s (God) lot in his life. He loves his family, his place within his community, and is firm in his faith. There’s only one thing he longs for; the love of a good woman and eventual kinner (children). That woman happens to be Beth—his childhood friend who visited with her family during the summer months. Can he convince her to commit to the Amish faith & his heart before it’s too late?
There’s also Danny’s brother Zach who has left the Amish faith & Tabitha the Amish veterinarian who came back to her Amish faith & life after her English husband died. These made for great secondary characters who added so much to the story! I didn’t read the first book, but I had no trouble keeping up because the author gave enough backstory to Green Pastures . The ending was so surprising and satisfying that I can’t wait for the next installment! This certainly won’t be my last book by Patricia Johns, I already love her writing voice. She kept me engaged the entire book and longing for more.

From the gorgeous book cover to the last page readers will be delighted with this second book in The Amish of Shepherd's Hill series by Patricia Johns. Still Waters was hard to put down, and I quickly became enthralled with the characters and the setting. Beth Peachy is a young woman who is in a place in her life where she isn't sure of what lies ahead for her in her Amish community. When the opportunity presents itself to go to Lancaster County to care for her grandmother who has dementia, she finds herself questioning things about her family especially about her father and the secrets they kept from her. As her grandmothers' memories begin to fail Beth knows the secrets that are kept in the shadows must soon come to light to help her discover who she really wants to be. Beth reconnects with her old friend Danny Lapp and the two have issues in common. Danny is dealing with his brother Zach who has decided that the Amish way of life is not what he wants, and he begins to try and sway his own family to his new way of thinking. Danny wishes to remain Amish and dealing with his brother causes him a great amount of stress and frustration. Beth is dealing with her own issues of not remaining in the Amish faith. As the two navigate through treacherous water, they search for unanswered questions and grow closer together. Will Beth chose the Amish life or will she leave Danny heartbroken. This book is powerful in the subject matters dealing with dementia, and choices that are made when people are young and having faith that life can produce beauty from ashes. I loved the dog in the story as well. What blessings those furry creatures are especially when they show up at just as the right time their owners need them. I was so deeply moved by the storyline. Thank you, Bethany house and Patricia Johns for the opportunity to read Patricia's second book in The Amish of Shepherd's Hill series. Most definitely a five-star review!

Tabitha Schrock is the town veterinarian. She came back after leaving the Amish. Jonas is a single man that is longing for more. He has been spending time with the town veterinarian. My favorite quote is "What was my dad like as a child?" Beth asked. That was an easy enough guestion to answer, wasn't it? " He was a sweet boy." Mammi said, tears misting her eyes." Story of family and love. I recommend this book. Still Waters by Patricia Johns is a 5 -- star book. I am looking forward to reading more books by Patricia Johns. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions shared here in this review are my own.
A beautiful quote that I wish I could use for my review alone:
“When one person went Englisch, it broke a lot of hearts. It shook up a whole family, and it left people frustrated and aching. Roots mattered, because when you tore them up, a lot of damage was done. But when they continued to push deeper into the ground, they found everything they needed — nourishment, comfort, meaning, belonging. That choice for the church wasn’t a game. It was everything that mattered.”
Family matters, friendship and truth. Sometimes it is good to get the truth out, no matter how hurtful it is. It will give the body peace and comfort. Or supposed to.
This was an incredibly beautiful story. I just finished it. It made my afternoon go by fast because I really enjoyed it
Patricia Johns has done really well with this book. Especially with the heartbreaking subjects. I wanted to cry for Mammi. Changes can be difficult for people. I definitely understand that part. What Mammi’s going through really breaks my heart.
Beth is who I was worried about. I love her character. She’s grown up outward, but what about on the inside? I agree with her about her parents treating her a certain way because they think she’s still a kid, but is she really? Why send her to her Mammi if she’s not ready?
It’s not good to hold secrets, or is it? I don’t blame Beth for trying to figure things out.
Oh yes, I did NOT like Zac, Danny’s brother. I didn’t like the things he did or said to his family. Especially his Mamm. How awful.
Y’all just have to pick up this beautiful story to find out! This story had everything that I love about the Amish people. I enjoyed feeling lime a part of their community. I hated saying goodbye.

“Still waters ran deep … Notice how still the water is. If the surface is like glass, the water is deep. Don’t be fooled. Lakes can seem almost bottomless.”
Beth Peachy is at a real crossroads in her life. She’s torn between staying in her Amish community or stepping out into the wider world. While she’s in Lancaster County caring for her ailing grandmother, she knows she’s where she’s supposed to be for now — but she can’t help wondering what comes next. The simple Amish life just doesn’t seem to fit her dreams anymore, and she’s struggling to figure out where she truly belongs.
Her childhood friend Danny Lapp is wrestling with his own challenges. His brother has left the Amish and has been pretty outspoken about it, which hurts Danny deeply. Even so, Danny still loves his brother and wants to keep that connection alive.
As Beth and Danny spend time together, they find comfort in being able to talk honestly about their doubts and frustrations. Patricia Johns does such a great job showing the emotional side of their journeys and the very real questions they’re facing. It’s easy to relate to both of them as they try to make sense of faith, family, and their futures.
I also loved seeing Tabitha Schrock again — she was in the first book, Green Pastures, and I hope her story continues in future books. Like the first one, Still Waters focuses more on the emotional and spiritual growth of the characters than on the romance. It’s a heartfelt, thoughtful read that complements the first book perfectly. I’m already looking forward to what comes next in the series.
Many thanks to Bethany House Publishers and to NetGalley for this ARC to review. This is my honest opinion.
Still Waters by Patricia Johns is a fascinating Amish novel. It explores the ways and faith of the Amish people. But it also explored and compared the lives of the non-Amish with those of the Amish. Some Amish have jumped the fence to the Englisher ways only to return back to their community. One such character featured in this book is the vet. She was raised Amish and left the community, became a vet and divorced her cheating husband. Then, returned to the Amish community she left and became their vet. Though she cannot marry since she divorced. Another such character is the brother of an Amish man. He questions and dislikes the ways of their Amish community. He leaves only to live together with an Englisher. Overtime, he mistreats his family, falls out with this live-in girlfriend, and returns back home to his Amish community until he figures himself out.
One the main characters is deciding whether to leave behind the Amish community to continue her education or to stay and become Amish fully. Her childhood friend, Danny, has already committed to the Amish ways of life and faith. All these years he has secretly loved Beth. But he cannot be with someone who doesn't want the Amish way of life. Dilemmas are plentiful in this book. However, it shows that despite the decisions, dilemmas, grief, and loss also comes love, hope, faith, and second chances. Family and faith were huge themes. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this Amish fiction novel. Patricia Johns writes well.
I received this copy from the publisher. This is my voluntary review.
Still Waters by Patricia Johns is another great one by this beloved author. Ms. Jones always tells a special story in a special way, but as soon as you begin to read, you are drawn into the story and it never lets you go. Because her grandmother is showing signs of dementia, Beth Peachy, returns to Lancaster County to aid her grandmother in preparing her house for sell. Beth is in that time period when a young person is faced with deciding whether to join the Amish Church and become a true member of the Amish community, or leave the church and community. Beth has unanswered family questions that need to be settled in order for her to make her decision. Her grandmother’s illnesses puts a lot of pressure on Beth to find these answers sooner rather than later. Her childhood friend, Danny Lapp, has decisions of his own to make. With this reuniting of friends, we get to see the growing relationship between these two. We also get to have a closer look at the friendship between Tabitha and Jonas, who we met in Green Pastures, which is the first book in this series. You are given a very realistic storyline and beautifully described characters. True love, friendship and forgiveness can be seen clearly throughout the story. This is a must read. I was given an ARC by the author and publisher, but all opinions are my own and I was not required to give a positive review. Get you 5-star read today.
Still Waters is a beautiful story about love, family, redemption, and forgiveness.
Book 2 of “The Amish of Shepherd’s Hill” mostly follows the day-to-day of main characters Danny, Beth, her Mammi, veterinarian Tabitha and Jonas.
Veterinarian Tabitha is trying to find her way within the Amish community after divorcing her English husband and coming back to her community. She is unable to be married again according to her Amish faith but finds herself getting closer to her friend Jonas as their friendship deepens. I like how they interact and help each another especially with the animals. Tabitha has great insights with being a part of the English world and then coming back to rejoin the Amish way of life.
Beth is staying with her Mammi over the summer because of her Mammi’s health issues. Beth loves being Amish but struggles with the strictness and rules of limiting education and life experiences. Beth struggles with the hard questions of what she wants for her future and asking questions about her dad and heritage.
I loved the relatable characters with their experiences, questions, and doubts that we probably have all had in our lives. The Author did a beautiful job with creating the story, setting, and characters. I can’t wait to read book 3 in this series!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions and views expressed are my own.
STILL WATERS runs deep - it is a glimpse into the heart and soul of faith minded people and the struggles they face on a daily basis and it is this internal struggle that speaks to me (that speaks to all of us). Patricia Johns’s writing style is captivating, her words describe feelings and emotions that are relatable to everyone on some level or other. As a reader, I find joy in the books I read. I also long to escape to a place that takes me away from the real world for a bit. This book gave me that while also making me reflect on things in a way I wasn’t expecting.
STILL WATERS is the story of two couples - Beth and Danny and Tabitha and Jonas. We watch their relationships unfold and feel like we have a front row seat to every single emotion they feel. I teared up a time or two and found myself questioning a lot of things while reading this book. But the one thing that was constant was the underlying power of love in all of its varying degrees. I wasn’t sure where Patricia was taking us until the very end and was not disappointed in the least. She gave me what I needed for one couple and had my heart in tatters for the other. I look forward to the next book in the series where I hope to see more of these wonderful characters and this special place.
I’m giving STILL WATERS the judy.ann.loves.books stamp of approval, TBR and Enjoy!
I recently started to read from author Patricia Johns. And I must say she is a favorite. This story is the second book in the series. And the cover is sweet with the cutie doggie on it.
This story touches dementia and a loving grandmother with a secret hidden deep inside her. But Beth is at a race to get answers to questions nobody in her family want to answer. And it seems that the lake has kept them well is it ready to share what it holds. Can she get her answers to her family's past history? Will she be able to decide if to join the Amish church or not?
Tabitha a veterinarian. Comes to help out. I just enjoy stories with animals. And studying veterinary assistant classes I enjoyed Tabitha. And sweet Goldie.
Danny is Beth's friend. He too has a secret. His brother. Can he understand Beth and can they both help each other when they join together and find more answers. But will an answer show up for a question that appears to about them?
I truly enjoyed this story. Family, Forgiveness, Faith and Love. Everything you need in a story that captures your heart in every page that you turn. Author Patricia Johns has mastered a story like no other. A great penmanship that will tug at you.
I received a ARC from the author publisher. All stated here are my own. I was not required a positive comment.
Beth is visiting her grandmother as she had in years past. This time she is helping her grandmother clean her house to sell. Due to her grandmother's declining dementia she is unable to live alone. Beth makes it her mission for the summer to find out family secrets before it's too late.
Danny has spent his childhood summers with Beth. Now that he is an adult he is trying to figure out his life. His brother Zach has left the Amish and is trying to take his siblings with him to the world.
Jonas is a single man that is longing for more. He has been spending time with the town veterinarian. His parents are pushing him to settle down.
Tabitha is the town veterinarian that came back after leaving the Amish. She isn't able to get remarried due to her divorce from her worldly husband. As she has came back to the Amish fitting in has been challenging.
This is the second book in the series and it is as good as the first! The continuation of the story goes deeper in the town of Shepherds Hill. We meet new characters and secrets come to light in this small Amish community. I highly recommend this story!
A complimentary copy of this book was provided by Bethany House Publishers through Interviews and Reviews via NetGalley. All opinions are mine alone.*
A powerful story that presses to the heart that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.
Beth has taken on the responsibility of caring for her grandmother who has dementia. The plan is to pack up the house and move her grandmother home with her mother and siblings. Beth is also taking the time to figure out what her future holds.
Danny and Beth used to be close friends and as he sees her as a grown woman those feelings have turned more than friendship. Danny struggles with Beth’s decision to learn more about her dad’s past. A past he never disclosed before his sudden passing. Danny is also struggling with his older brother’s decision to become English and the effects it has on his family.
Love takes flight as a past lie starts to come light. Should the past stay in the past?
This is part of a three book series but can be read as a standalone with no issues. You have the continuation of Tabitha’s story from, Green Pastures, which I haven’t read (yet).
A clean romance that can be read by the entire family. Perfect for books clubs. Discussion questions are included.
Still Waters is the second book in The Amish of Shepheds's Hill series by Patricia Johns. This is a well written and easy to read contemporary Amish fiction story. This story follows after the first in the series with similar wonderful characters.
This is such an enjoyable story to read. The story focuses on Beth and her grandmother as Beth spends time with her to prepare her home for sale and move her to be with family. The author does an amazing job of introducing the topic of her grandmother's struggle with dementia and how Beth tries to deal with it. I enjoyed the mystery surrounding Beth's father and how Beth longs to know her family history. I like how the author brings back Tabitha and how she helps Beth, not only with her grandmother but also with Beth's feeling of the Amish and English. I especially enjoyed the growing relationship between Beth and Danny. This is a wonderful story that focuses on family, faith and relationships.
I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this book from the author, this is my honest review.
Still Waters is the second book in The Amish of Shepherd's Creek series, but can easily be read as a standalone novel. There is enough explanation in this book that you wouldn't miss much, but I will always recommend reading the series in order!
Beth Peachy is struggling with staying Amish or going English. She doesn't mind the rules as much as she wants more. More education, more freedom, for things to be easier. When she goes to Lancaster County to care for Mammi, she reconnects with Danny, but still struggles with what is right for her. However, to have a relationship with him, she would have to stay Amish.

Surprising storyline family secrets complicated dynamics dementia rep
I don't know what else to say without giving spoilers. I enjoyed this story and was sad when it ended. There are still parts of the story that will be carried over into the next book, and I am here for it. Thank you to the author and Bethany House for the opportunity to read this book. I was not required to provide a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Still Waters by Patricia Johns is a charming work. The writing displays a strong command of craft, with well-developed and believable characters throughout. I appreciated the Amish community at Shepherd’s Hill for their mutual support through all circumstances. Still Waters focuses on Beth Peachy and Danny Lapp. Beth is currently in Shepherd’s Hill assisting her grandmother, who has dementia, with preparations to relocate to live with family. During this time, Beth seeks to gain further insight into her late father's childhood while considering a decision regarding baptism. Danny's family urges him to marry, but he is only interested in Beth. It was nice to catch up with Tabitha to see how she is readjusting to Amish life and her community. I enjoyed the mystery and was eager to learn more. Still Waters is the second book in The Amish of Shepherd’s Hill series. It can be read as a standalone, but I recommend reading Green Pastures first which features Tabitha Schrock and her sisters. Still Waters is an appealing Amish tale with baptism doubts, dementia difficulties, divorce dilemma, romance miseries, brother trouble, suppressed secrets, and a caring community.
The story is set in a Pennsylvania amish church district, called Shepherd's Hill. Beth Peachy is one of the main characters. She went to Shepard's Hill to help her Grandma pack up and move with her parents. She is not yet baptized, many doubts are in her mind. "Was it here amongst the Amish who know her best, or out there with the freedom to follow her passions?" She dreams her future, but she longed to know her past, about all her father's past. Nobody mentions it. It seems it is a mystery and this intrigues Beth. This story is about family: abuse and rescue, mystery and true, silence and heavy souls, trust and help, ill and support... so many topics that occur also in English families and something to think about. Recently (13 november) it was Kindnes Day. I think all the days of the year could be Kindnes Day. A supportive partner, family and village can help live better. I received a complimentary copy courtesy of Bethany House Publishers through Interviews & Reviews and NetGalley.
Patricia Johns delivers a heartfelt and engaging story in Still Waters. With her trademark warmth, she weaves together themes of love, family, and second chances in a way that feels both real and relatable. The characters are layered and easy to connect with, and the small-town setting adds an extra dose of charm to the story.
The pacing is steady, and the emotional depth keeps you invested from beginning to end. While a few parts were slightly predictable, that didn’t take away from the overall enjoyment. Johns has a talent for making her characters’ struggles and triumphs resonate with readers.
A touching, uplifting read perfect for anyone who enjoys heartfelt romance with a message of hope and healing.
Thank you to NetGalley for a copy of this ARC in return for my honest feedback.
Another great read by one of my favorite authors. This is a read that is full of emotions, you'll find yourself with tears in your eyes. A faith based read with people that are there for one another. A young woman has come to help her grandmother get ready to move, and also for answers about her dad. I loved the compassion shown here for a women with some dementia, a horrible disease. Then I loved the freeing of giving forgiveness, and we are given that in this book! The guilt, but the reward is so great, and put in that position I would do the same! This was such a beautiful read to get lost in, and I can't wait for the next book in this series, and for an answer for some that I now care about! I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Bethany House, and was not required to give a positive review.
Still Waters by Patricia Johns is the 2nd book in her, The Amish of Shepherd’s Hill series. Can be read as a stand-alone but you would be missing out on a wonderful book, Green Pastures. Beth Peachy comes back to Shepherd’s Hill to help her grandmother who has dementia. She is hoping to uncover the secrets surrounding her father that only her grandmother knows. Struggling with the restrictions of her Amish Faith and coming back to the sweet and handsome boy across the Lake Danny Lapp, who is grounded in his Faith helps guide her. Danny,She was all wrong for Him, but she was knitted in there… My favorite verse, He maketh me to lie down in green pastures. He leadeth me beside the still waters…. Must be in your TBR pile. Loved the depth of characters! Still waiting for a happy ending for Tabitha Schrock! Thank you for this Arc, this is my honest review. #PatriciaJohns #BHPFiction
“Behind the scenes in every good family, there were hardships no one imagined.” A family mystery. A sweet romance. A mother’s love. Journey back to Shepherd’s Hill, where life is simpler, but not necessarily easier. And questions are just waiting to be answered. It was wonderful to visit with Tabitha again and have her unique perspective influence Beth and Danny’s future. It’s a faith filled Amish love story, every bit as sweet and enjoyable as you would expect from Patricia Johns. It just might be my favorite yet. I highly recommend getting into this series in preparation for book 3 next summer. I think you will love it as much as I did. *I received a complimentary copy of this book courtesy of the author. Author Patricia Johns gives us a story of second chances. I enjoyed Beth; she’s devoted to family as she cares for her Mammi. Yet she is struggling with choices about her future. Danny is strong and determined to remain Amish, while he struggles to have a relationship with his brother who jumped the fence. Both are well written, true to life characters.
Full of emotions as Mammi deals with dementia, Beth deals with Danny, and Danny deals with his brother, Johns writing kept me turning the pages as they all worked through where they belong in this world. I highly recommend it!
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review. All thoughts are my own.
Still Waters is the second book in patricia John's The Amish of Shepherd's Hill series. This story focuses mainly on Jonas and Tabitha Schrock, a woman who left her Amish community to get education to become a vetrinarian, and also got divorced from her unfaithful husband. Tabitha is now back in Shepherd's Hill as the local vet, and she's become Amish once again, so can never remarry, unless her ex dies. This story also focuses on Danny Lapp and Beth Peachey, who were childhood friends.
I found it difficult to "get Into" this story until about the half-way point, or so, and then it got pretty interesting to me. I liked the ending and am looking forward to the next book in the series releasing in 2026.
Who would have thought anyone in the Amish community held such deeply hidden secrets? Beth never understood why her dad or her grandmother never spoke of his childhood and was determined to uncover the truth, no matter what. Would it have anything to do with her indecision to join the community? And what about the strong feelings she held for her lifelong friend, Danny? Would it be a determining factor in her decision? This story was very well written, held my interest start to finish and one I highly recommend without hesitation! #BHPFiction
There are many family secrets in Beth's Amish family. When she goes to stay with her grandmother, will she learn the truth? Beth's grandma has dementia and her memories are fading away. Beth needs to learn the truth about her family secrets so she can move forward in her own life. This is a really good read by Patricia Johns. This is book number 2 in the series. It's a beautiful story about family, faith, love, forgiveness and second chances. I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed are my own.
If you are looking for an amazing book that draws you in from page one, look no further. Such a well written gentle love story with some real life issues like dementia, it is guaranteed to touch your heart in so many ways. Patricia Johns is an exceptional writer that always surrounds her characters with God’s love while showing their strengths and weaknesses as they come full circle in their faith. This series is a definite must read and I can’t wait to see what the author has in store for us.
