I read everything I can from Seth! This is a wonderful introduction to narrative analogy. It’s rigorous while easy to read and inspires the reader to go and do likewise. I do think the chapter on typology is muddy, and I fear it will lose him some readers. But the book is so good I can’t dock it a star!
It’s rare that a book on hermeneutics can be termed a page-turner, but this one fits the bill. Postell’s work is intelligent, but not overly academic. It’s a great read, and highly engaging. His example parallel passages are illuminating and well chosen. I highly recommend this book.
Note on docking one star: While the Star Wars analogy works for the most part, it’s a little too played up/out for my taste, and I think that Postell is a little too hard on typology.
A great introduction to the world of narrative analogy. Not only does he make practical what is often reserved for the seasoned biblical scholar, but he also writes in a way that captures your attention to see Scripture the way he, and others like him, do. His bibliography is also phenomenal, which provides many opportunities for further reading. I’ve already recommended this book to a handful of people, and I imagine I will continue to do so!
