I really enjoyed this Advent book by Cynthia! It was an insightful read that invites you to rediscover the Nativity story through the presence of the Holy Spirit. She shines a spotlight on the Spirit who was at work from creation through the unfolding of God's redemptive plan. This paired scripture, reflections, prayer etc., to guide you through the season. It stands out among devotionals, keeping the Holy Spirit at the front of the story. Would recommend. Thank you to the publisher for a gifted copy, all thoughts are my own.

“But the Spirit was there. The Bible tells us He hovered over waters and chaos prior to God the Father’s words that gave birth to beginnings. And He hovers over every page of the Christmas story.”

Years ago, when I was a teacher for the AWANA Cubbies program at our then-church, I asked an adorable little preschooler to tell me the story of David & Goliath. With an old-man-worthy sigh of wisdom, he sat up on his knees and began, “A long, long time ago, there was nothing…” At which point, I thought to myself, “How far back in the Biblical narrative is he going?” Until he added, “Nothing but sheep!” Ah. Okay. So not as far back as I feared there for a moment. And perhaps not entirely accurate but it made me smile nonetheless. Well, in the first devotional of The Spirit of Christmas, gifted author Cynthia Ruchti (whose words always feel like a warm hug to my heart) DID go back to that long ago beginning where everything was formless and void. I loved how she traces the Christmas story from the garden to the nativity and beyond, tuning our hearts to see afresh (or for the first time) the presence and influence of the Holy Spirit in each moment of the familiar narrative and in our Christmas seasons today.

Oh, how we need the message in this Advent devotional, perhaps more than ever. It’s not heavy – Ruchti’s winsome writing voice brings a smile to our faces and elicits a few chuckles as well – but it’s profound. Gently profound. The kind of depth that sneaks up on you and lingers long as you ponder it in your heart with the same Spirit who hovered over creation, the nativity, the cross and the tomb… and now lives in those of us who follow Jesus. The Spirit whose presence is the focus of this little devotional. The Spirit who develops in us evidence of Jesus that the world so desperately needs today: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Each day’s short but meaningful teaching left me with points to prayerfully consider, and I look forward to reading it again in the days before Christmas to keep my focus on the spiritual even during the temporal activities this season. I also loved the ‘Holy Spirit nudges’ scattered throughout the book, reminding us to be sensitive to His promptings of people who might need tidings of comfort and joy.

“Jesus came in an unexpected way to an unsuspecting people, wrapped in in-expressible hope.”

Bottom Line: The Spirit of Christmas by Cynthia Ruchti is a tender and hemmed-in-hope Advent devotional that draws our eyes to the often-overlooked presence of the Holy Spirit in the Christmas story and in our own celebration of the holiday. With her trademark warmth, subtle humor, and soul-stirring insight, Ruchti invites readers to experience familiar Scriptures in a new light, weaving reminders of God’s redemption plan into each short reflection. Both accessible and deeply meaningful, this little book offers encouragement for the season and points us back to the Spirit who still breathes life, joy, and peace into weary hearts today. A wonderful gift for friends and family… and yourself!

Each year I search for a book to prepare my heart for Advent and help me focus on the most important things. This year, The Spirit of Christmas will be that book. I love how Cynthia Ruchti focuses a narrowed lens on the Christmas story to highlight the Holy Spirit’s presence in ways I’ve overlooked but that now seem so obvious. My biggest take away is to be more aware of the Holy Spirit not just in the Christmas story but in me, and to recognize and listen to holy nudges that prompt me to see and serve others. I look forward to reading The Spirit of Christmas again for Advent, slowly, savoring the messages and discussing it with my young adult daughters who will read the book, too (a tradition we started a few years ago). Finally, the book is beautiful inside and will make a lovely gift.

This book opens eyes to the move of the Holy Spirit amid the Christmas story. The author shares with readers a fresh angle, one often unnoticed yet fully deserving of our focus Great for personal devotion time, but this perfectly sized little book would gift well, too. The Spirit of Christmas is a beautiful reminder of how present and active the Holy Spirit is throughout the Advent story. From the very beginning in Genesis , the Spirit plays a vital role in God’s plan—yet in our shortened bedtime retellings of shepherds in the fields and wise men traveling, this truth is often overlooked. Cynthia Ruchti brings that richness back to the forefront.

Blending personal stories, poems, Scripture, and history, Cynthia gently guides readers deeper into God’s longing to be with us. I especially loved the “ponderings” at the end of each chapter—echoes of Mary’s own pondering—as they invite you to pause, reflect, and hold each truth close to your heart.

Each chapter is short, meaningful, and filled with gentle insight into the intentional gift we were given at Christmas. This book is a must for your Christmas season—an invitation to slow down, pay attention, and remember the Holy Spirit’s faithful presence woven throughout the story of God with us.

The Spirit of Christmas: Discovering His Presence Throughout The Advent Season
By Cynthia Ruchti
A book review by Emily Shanahan
The Spirit of Christmas: Discovering His Presence Throughout The Advent Season is a 26-day Advent devotional written by Cynthia Ruchti, published by Chosen Books. The Spirit of Christmas outlines the movement of the Holy Spirit from the literal Genesis of creation all the way until the birth of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. Unlike most modern-day Advent devotionals, which focus only on the birth of Christ as recorded in the Gospels of Luke and Matthew. This Advent devotional highlights various Old Testament Messianic prophecies, culminating in their fulfillment through the arrival of Jesus Christ.
The structure of The Spirit of Christmas is delightfully engaging. Each day opens with a scripture, followed by a devotional thought from Cynthia, then a family activity meant for the young, and the young at heart alike. This is followed by a Christmas song and prayer. The devotionals are deep enough to provide spiritual meat for an adult, yet simple enough for a child to understand and interact with.
I met Cynthia Ruchti when she gave some online talks about how to find a literary agent and tips on writing a strong book proposal as a Christian author. Cynthia and I both share a love of purple, tea, books, and Jesus. Even though we have not yet had the pleasure of meeting each other in person, we have built a friendship with each other through social media and email.

Most devotional style books present the reader with a relatable anecdote, a scriptural reminder, and a feel-good word of encouragement. This little treasure, however, has a depth and richness saturating every page that wakes the reader up to new insights and calls them to action.

Cynthia Ruchti’s exquisite writing presents the story between the lines of the gospels, showcasing the work of the Holy Spirit which compels the reader to respond with softened heart and joyful acceptance. One of Cynthia’s superpowers is reaching into the what-ifs of an unknown and communicating the potential heart and thoughts of a character. She did that so beautifully with the way the Holy Spirit’s presence is woven through the Christmas story, gently reminding the reader of what the Holy Spirit can do with a surrendered heart.

I am not the patient reader who is content with reading one excerpt a day, so I devoured the entire book in an afternoon, and it’s been sticking with me all week. Oh! What lovely writing, and powerful encouragement! I now have a mental post-it on the front of my brain saying, “She said yes!” What if I were, like Mary, to receive with trust that which the Lord has called me to? What could the Holy Spirit do with ME when I respond with a humble heart?
_____
The book itself is the perfect size to keep by the bedside or to tuck into a purse, and the cover feels almost fabric-like in its softness and texture. I started with the paperback, and finished with the audiobook, and very much enjoyed the gentle storytelling voice of VO artist, Kathleen Li. (For y’all crazies that listen to audiobooks at a million times speed, you will be sure to appreciate Kathleen’s clear diction and steady tone.)

Cynthia Ruchti does not disappoint in this enticing devotional centered on the Holy Spirit and His role in the Advent season. I opened the book expecting a short thought with a prayer and a few thought-provoking questions. The writings for each day tell like a story, from day to day building on the familiar history known to those who follow Christ’s story. This is very intriguing. Cynthia allows us, invites us, to explore real feelings of each person, yet stays within the Gospel itself.
Her questions and prompts further this plan. No pat one word answers here. I read, thought, put the book down and thought again with both mind and heart. It is quite evident the Holy Spirit was and is intimately involved in Jesus’ conception, birth, and family. This is a unique perspective. And one much needed in our world. All of us, believers and onlookers, need to grasp the power of the Spirit. Because He changes lives, He draws people closer to the Father, He inhabits our praises.
Maybe you, the reader, have been involved in an Advent devotional for many years. Perhaps you, like me, have never attempted such a feat. Might I recommend you buy Cynthia’s Spirit of Christmas this year. Disclaimer: I have not finished it yet. I’m holding off to read it during Advent. This year, it starts Sunday November 30 and walks (sprints, runs) through Wednesday December 24.
My prayer is that this devotional will give my dry Christmas bones life again, through the power of the Holy Spirit.

If you're looking for a new Advent devotional, I highly recommend The Spirit of Christmas by Cynthia Ruchti.
Each year, I search out a new Advent devotional to focus my heart and mind during the Christmas season. This summer, I purchased Ruchti's latest, The Spirit of Christmas. Everything about this devotional was well thought out and beautiful. From the cover design to the interior design, from the featured Scripture passages to Advent prayers, and from the author's touching words to the additional notes and resources for supplementary reading, activity, and devotion time, this is a purposeful way of getting into the spirit of Christmas.

The Spirit of Christmas leads us to think of the third member of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit. It shows the reader how the presence of the Holy Spirit was there long before Gabriel's announcement to Mary that she was chosen to bring God's Son to the world. It tells the story of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament and the New Testament. This devotional connects dots throughout Scripture that provoke new thoughts and new ideas on how to approach a story we feel we are familiar with. It will touch your heart and mind, uplifting you during a season of love, joy, and peace.

Soon, the Christmas season will be over, but give yourself a chance to experience The Spirit of Christmas early or make sure you have a copy on hand to prepare for next Christmas. It is always the right time to explore the presence of the Holy Spirit.

I enjoy using an advent book for my devotional in December. This year I was blessed to read an advance copy of The Spirit of Christmas by Cynthia Ruchti. Cynthia is an awesome writer, but this is the first of her non-fiction I have read. She has a talent for breathing fresh insight into topics which many writers avoid. I really enjoyed her touch of humor added to this insight of looking for The Holy Spirit throughout the story of Christ Jesus coming to earth as a baby.
I love her reminder of God sending His son to be the restorer of relationships. All of her stories she purposefully hems in hope. Once again, I found this in her advent devotional.
“The Holy Spirit has always been in the business of restoring, reclaiming, refurbishing, renewing and recycling. Christmas is one of His display rooms of that concept. Broken world? God knows, and He takes the scrapped and salvaged pieces to make us sit up and take notice of a baby who has flawless skin and a flawless heart and who changes everything…”
I appreciated at the end of each reading she offers ponderings and a prayer. Her family Christmas activities to make room for The Spirit were thought provoking and practical. She also included Holy Spirit Nudges at Christmas.
This is a unique Advent book and I look forward to sharing it with those at our house this year.

It’s almost Advent Season, and I want to recommend a unique devotion book to celebrate this significant time: THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS, Discovering His Presence Throughout the Advent Season by Cynthia Ruchti.

Our traditional Christmas devotionals focus on Mary, Joseph, and the Christ Child, along with the shepherds, the wise men, and maybe the little drummer boy. Rarely mentioned is the one who was always there, even from the beginning—the Holy Spirit. In Genesis, we are told that the Spirit was there, hovering over the waters. He was there when Mary received her news. He’s always been there; but in our hectic celebrating, we may never have noticed. When we pause and listen, we’ll find that He still hovers with us in 2025 as we celebrate the Savior.

I love the size of the book (5 x 7 inches). The format is simple but effective. Each day opens with a scripture, followed by a devotional thought from Cynthia. Then there a deeper thought to ponder, space to record responses, and an ending prayer.

This small but impactful book opens our eyes to the moving of Holy Spirit within the Christmas story and our daily lives.

This wonderfully unique Advent devotional invites readers on a 26-day spiritual journey to explore and experience the presence of the Holy Spirit throughout the Advent season!

I love how this book opened my eyes to the power and presence of the Spirit in a new way by highlighting core Scripture verses spanning from the Garden of Eden in Genesis to the Cross in the New Testament, with special focus on the Christmas story in between. This book will transform your perspective on the Christmas narrative! Cynthia, with her warm and often humorous voice, gently guides readers to see the Spirit’s presence hovering over every page and moment.

The Spirit of Christmas explores topics such as the Spirit’s prophetic promises of redemption and Jesus’ birth in the Old Testament, as well as the vital roles of the Holy Spirit in our lives today as believers.
There are also spaces for reflection, beautiful prayers, and practical applications designed to help you celebrate the Advent season with a renewed focus on the Spirit’s active work within and around us.

The Spirit of Christmas is such an uplifting devotional. Being reminded that the Holy Spirit was there through the whole Christmas story is comforting as it is a reminder that He is here with you too, working in and through you, just as He did with Mary, Joseph, Simeon, Zechariah, Elizabeth, and so many others.

Cynthia Ruchti did an amazing job writing daily devotionals that were both uplifting and educational. I love her style of writing as it is very similar to mine. She injects a little humor here and there with asides in parentheses which I do a lot. It is obvious she has done her research and is able to convey her point in such a way that both new and lifelong Christians, and everyone in between, can understand. When I wrote notes on the ponderings, I made sure to date them because this devotional should be done year after year, and I like to see how I answer based on where I am mentally and emotionally at that time.

Not only are there “ponderings” sections that make you dig deeper, there are “nudges” that give you simple ideas on how you can bless others this holiday season.

It is a beautiful book, and I highly recommend it. 5 out of 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Do you like having a special devotional for Advent? My devotional this year was The Spirit of Christmas by Cynthia Ruchti.

Unfortunately, I did not receive this book until a few days after Advent started so I was behind from the beginning. I still enjoyed the book but I struggled to keep up with a busy month. I think I would like to start over and read the book better from start to finish.

The Spirit of Christmas includes 25 readings--one for each day of the Advent season. Of course, the book could be read any time of the year but the focus is on the Christmas season and the birth of Christ. As you would expect, every day starts with a Scripture verse. Each day's reading is 3 or 4 pages long, followed by a section called Pondering, which includes questions to think about related to the day's reading. Then the reading concludes with a prayer.

The Spirit of Christmas book is a small size so it is a good size to take along and read on the go. Or it easily fits on your nightstand or slides in your Bible case or book bag.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

I love Advent devotionals and was so excited to dig into this one. I loved the focus on the Holy Spirit’s presence throughout Scripture and the Christmas story. This emphasis made the devotional feel unique and invited me to notice the Holy Spirit’s role during Advent in ways I hadn’t considered before which I did appreciate.

At times, some of the connections to the Holy Spirit felt stretched to fit the theme and lacked a strong biblical foundation. For example, two consecutive devotions imagined how Mary might have told her mother about her pregnancy and speculated about the Holy Spirit’s role in that conversation. In addition, some of the author’s imaginative or lighthearted stories and jokes felt distracting to me and pulled me out of the sacredness of Advent, such as a mention of Mary craving BBQ chips during her pregnancy. I personally would have preferred greater depth grounded in Scripture rather than imaginative or modernized storytelling.

The book is beautifully formatted and I especially enjoyed the beautiful Advent prayers at the end of each devotional, which I found meaningful and well written.

In her advent devotional, The Spirit of Christmas, Cynthia Ruchti shares how the Holy Spirit is present throughout the advent season and how He can be part of our celebration of Christmas today. Through a series of twenty-five devotionals, Ruchti explores how the Holy Spirit, the person of the Trinity that is the most forgotten, shaped all the different parts of story about how Jesus came into the world as a tiny baby. You are reminded that the Holy Spirit is not just a small part of the story of Jesus’ birth; He is a central character to the story and understanding His role can change the way you see the whole season, if you are willing to let Him work. Including insightful reflections, advent prayers and practical tips on how to invite the Holy Spirit into your advent season, this devotional is beautifully written with a fresh perspective on advent that is worth reading. Cynthia Ruchti captures the heart of Advent beautifully in this thoughtful and inspiring book. The Spirit of Christmas isn’t just about seasonal traditions—it’s about slowing down and truly experiencing the presence of Christ during the busy holiday season. The reflections are heartfelt and written with warmth, weaving together Scripture, stories, and encouragement in a way that feels both comforting and uplifting.

I especially appreciated how the author ties everyday moments and familiar Christmas imagery back to the deeper meaning of the season. It’s the kind of book you can read straight through or savor one section at a time during Advent.

The only reason I didn’t give it five stars is that a few sections felt a little repetitive, but overall, it’s a wonderful devotional companion for anyone wanting to embrace a Christ-centered Christmas.

It's been a joy to journey through it heading into the Christmas season. Starting with the creation story (which surprised me!), Cynthia takes us through the familiar passages, pointing out the evidence of the Holy Spirit "hiding" in plain sight. It's given me so much fuel for thought and, more often than not, sent me to Scripture to dig deeper (which is the best sort of result of reading, in my book). And now I have the privilege of sharing some of it with a Sunday school class throughout the month of December

If you're looking for a thought-provoking devotional this holiday season, something to help you see the familiar story with a new lens, I highly recommend it!

This Advent devotional is a bit different from the rest. It highlights the presence of the Holy Spirit -- being wound all the way through the Christmas story -- whether we ever noticed it thefe before, or not. This definitely brought outnrw aspects about Christmas that I hadn't considered before. Ruchti also brings in elements of humor to her words, even yet while telling a serious message. She has a fun writing style.

I'm not exactly a fan of every single topic she chose to dive into; some of it becomes too technical in dissecting the Christmas story, but she does share a good message overall. I would personally only recommend this book to adults though.

In her new nonfiction book, Cynthia Ruchti points out that too often we hear the retelling of the Christmas story with less enthusiasm than we should, that the words are so familiar that they seem to be lifeless and rote. To combat that, Ruchti takes us through the Advent season focusing on each event, proclamation, and person, as well as the prophecies, and in doing so, she helps us discover the presence of the Holy Spirit at each step. Each day's reading ends with a pondering (something to do or think further about), an advent prayer. This book is definitely more in depth than many advent readings, but it is worth the time. This devotional was such a blessing to me during the Advent season. It gently shifted my focus and helped me slow down and truly reflect on the Christmas story in a deeper, more meaningful way. loved how it highlighted the often overlooked work of the Holy Spirit opening my eyes to details had never noticed before.
Each day felt thoughtful and approachable, with Scripture. reflection, and practical application that fit naturally into a busy season. It was faith building without feeling heavy, and it kept my heart centered on what truly matters as Christmas approached. This book became a quiet, steady companion throughout Advent, and am so gratefull read it.
A beautiful, spirit filled read that I would absolutely return to again.

It isn't even CLOSE to Christmas time, but I'll make an exception for Cynthia Ruchti. 😉

I loved the depth in this little devotional, as well as the glimpses of humor. Things I had never before thought about now have my mind whirling.

There are practical applications in this book, and even projects you could do.

I could easily see reading this to the kids, too.

It's the best when an author allows God to speak through him or her. Thank you, Cynthia, for being that willing vessel.

I had never read an advent devotional before and this was written beautifully. The little bits of humor placed through out made it feel more personable and more relaxed and relatable. It truly did capture the essence and spirit of the true meaning of Christmas and I couldn't be more grateful for it especially during this time in my life. This is my first time reading Cynthia's work and I can't wait to read her other works!

I'm so thrilled I was given the opportunity to read this ARC book and I owe a big thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to do and give my honest review.
