Daughter and heir to the throne, Mancella Cliff yearns for a life without
bloodshed. But as a child, she emerged from the Broken Citadel with the power to
summon animals—only after killing them with her bare hands. Her father, ruler of the realm, wants her to summon him an army, and isn’t afraid to lock her in a room full of predators to get it. Now her magic is a constant reminder of the horrors he has forced upon her to strengthen their realm’s power.

Silver is a charming thief struggling to survive in a world torn apart by Mancella’s father’s reign. When a mysterious benefactor recruits him for the heist of a lifetime, a chance to rob the castle, Silver relishes the opportunity for a real future—and revenge. But he’ll have to manipulate Mance and earn her trust to pull it off.

As the deception and carnage mount, Mance must find a way to save her realm without becoming the ruthless monster she’s been bred to be. A page-turner of a YA romantasy with deception, betrayal, family trauma, high stakes, and surprising twists! This was a very pleasant surprise and the audio narration was EXCELLENT! The performances really heightened the experience for me.

Animal lovers be aware- the magic of the main character relies on her being forced to kill them in order to gain power. She doesn't want to and is being forced by her father, but some scenes are difficult to read.

Mancella is the powerful heir to the throne, but people don't know that behind the vicious facade is a hurting and abused young woman. And at the start of the story, she isn't aware of how oppressive her father's policies are on the people they govern.

Silver is a thief and con artist tasked with gaining Mance's trust for specific reasons. But he finds that she isn't the monster he thought she was. And sparks begin to fly between the two of them...

This was a gripping narrative with high stakes and I was genuinely scared for the characters at points. The ending is wild and I need to know what happens next! This is a fantastic debut and I look forward to seeing more from the author. I received an audio review copy of this book via NetGalley, all opinions are my own.

“And that, just like he can never stomp the flowers out fully, I won’t let that spark of goodness in me die completely either.

No matter how many beasts we bury in my heart.”

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ The winner for the most villainous of father's goes to Mancella's father! 🙅🏻‍♀️ A man so cruel and pure evil that every time he appeared on page, I was visibly outraged and frustrated on behalf of Mancella's helplessness, because the man had no filter - no qualms - no moral compass whatsoever over his actions! I swear, I despised him on sight and he has no signs of redeeming himself in any way! 🤬

If you let someone else set the rules for you, then you’ll be stuck in the game they want to play.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ I did like the idea behind The Beasts We Bury is a very interesting one. To imagine a young girl having the ability to harbor the souls of animals into her body, but only after she kills them, by engaging in a battle to the death, in order to strengthen the magic that is needed to strengthen their kingdom is a compelling concept. And for how sixteen-year-old Mancella is the unfortunate destined soul who has been tasked to bear this unfortunate burden does not certainly come without a price.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ One that comes with even deeper claws that wish to sink into her soul and spirit in the face of her delusional and power-hungry father, who asks of her to do the one impossible thing that she knows she'll never be able to come back from, if she chooses to go through with it. 😟 But it will take more than a little liquid courage and the help of a young man, Silver, who has his own reasons for seeking out Mancella's help, that will have her face her greatest enemy - that may or may not be a wolf in sheep's clothing.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ It was easy to stay connected with the story; at times vicious, at times coming-of-age, at times a sweet romance amidst a fantasy setting of political intrigue, there was a little bit of everything that managed to keep it afloat. Mancella is at a really crucial stage in her life that will not only decide the fate of her family's realm, but her own well-being, as well. The danger of what she is expected to do is a crippling one, and it serves as the root of much of her actions, as well as Silver's involvement with her.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ I liked how we felt her rage and her compassion - her survival instincts kicking in, as well as her considerate heart of not wanting to hurt any living creature or a life of violence, but compelled to. Who was a beautiful creature at times, but could be a fast, sharp, savage predator when the time called for it. I still felt, though, at times, that there was something holding it back from being really good; maybe because it is Young Adult and also a debut, there was some hesitancy in either going completely dark or being too graphic, so it made the tone feel rather uneven. But, when you felt the tension and darkness, then it did resonate with me. ✨

Nothing in your life is going to change unless you change it.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Silver's story-line could have used a little more oomph . I know he is there to be Mancella's love interest and her ally, as also one with his own agenda, but he needed a little more to really engage with him. 😕 And while I did think their romance was a bit too on the nose instant, they did share some sweet scenes together. 😊💓 He had a strong sense of loyalty to Rooftop and Vie, which was nice to see, but also a strong level head and conscience. Granted, the slight outburst of emotion at one moment was a bit unnecessary, but what happened afterwards was a nice segue from what could have been a more annoying contrivance. 🥲

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ What stood out for me the most was Mancella's resistance and her affiliation with the helpless animals she had been tricked, coerced, or forced to kill in order to satisfy the hunger of an even crueler father. 😢The guilt and pain with every kill was palpable, as well as the lingering memories that now coexist within her of their skills and their pasts. It is a deep rooted connection that continues to lend a helping hand on numerous occasions. She was a capable girl, just unfortunately at her wits ends at perils not in her control.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ And the twists! Some were a bit expected, some not so much, but I enjoyed the slight moment of surprise when they happened, even if they hurt. But, definitely the highlight was Mancella's father - he was just the epitome of rotten, such a scoundrel that was hell-bent on destroying his daughter for his own gain that my blood boiled at how hard she was fighting to survive and do the right thing. 'Your dad’s a real scumbag, you know that?' 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️ Understatement of the century!!!! 😡 So many of her enemies were from within - so much judgment that she had no control over - it's no wonder she felt closest and safest with those she harbored inside of her.

If you think my animals are my only weapon, then you have vastly underestimated me.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ A few points of improvement that I felt could have made it a more enticing and gripping YA fantasy were a little more details into the world-building. It felt lacking that there was no name to the Coast Realm or Land Realm; I don't know if it was meant to be quirky, but it made it feel rather simple. 🙍🏻‍♀️ I also wish there could be more substance and development to the supporting cast; it felt like very limited interaction between everyone save Mancella with her sister and father, and Silver, well, with really only Mancella and Guerre. To make it feel like a more dynamic duology, especially with what's to come, I think it could help to have a little more insight into the other key players. 🤷🏻‍♀️

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ The extra .25, however, was rightfully earned by its ending; I did not see that coming in the slightest and well done to the author for having it play out in a totally unexpected way. 🤌🏻 🤌🏻 You know how in movies the background music changes when something is about to happen; very rarely have I read books that emit that same feeling. But D.L. Taylor brought that here. I heard the wisp of change and it was enough to convince me that I have to return for the sequel to the duology. I want to see Mancella's strength and resolve shine in her new role, along with certain characters' she's recently acquired to join her collection. 🥺 I want to see how Silver's role will change now that he does not have much to fight for, and haha, okay, actually he might just have the toughest job now, and it's gonna be interesting to see how it will unfold. 🫣

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ And also kudos for an absolutely smashing of a gorgeous cover! It perfectly captured the essence of the plot - the details of the flower merging with the jaguar - stunning! 🤩🪻

Am I strong enough yet?

It had an easy-to-follow world, underdeveloped tho because of that. Usually, I have to struggle through world-building but this was straightforward. The magic system was also too simple, and not all that exciting.

This is off to a negative start lmao

It doesn’t get better. I guess take this review with a grain of salt because it has my only trigger in it (on-page animal killing and torturing) but also, I was bored through most of it, so it wasn't just the trigger/dislike of the animals.

The cover is pretty, if that counts as something positive?

My main problem with this was that the author centred the entire book around killing animals. You can say it's something else, but no. Like…what? She doesn’t even mention it causally, it’s graphically detailed in the first few chapters and then more and more throughout the story in flashbacks and memories. It’s disgusting. Who even thought this would be a good idea? Having a character's power come from torturing and killing animals. Because she can’t kill them humanly, no, she had to brutalize them first. It’s pretty much universally accepted in the book community that animals are off-limits.

And the FMC, who’s supposed to hate killing animals and is only forced to do it, yeah, that doesn’t ring true. She feels bad and then eh, it’s done. She only started fighting back (and I say that lightly since she had the backbone of an invertebrate) when killing humans was brought up. She was also stupid. So there’s that.

I was expecting a glittering monster, but she’s … just a girl.
Which means I can break her.

Silver, the MMC, was boring and naive lmao. I have nothing to say about him, I've literally forgotten everything about him and his friends. I guessed what he was actually involved in from the start and the fact that he didn’t? Nope.

One of the most unique and underrated YA fantasy books I’ve ever read. As a whole the book is solid: great pacing, complex characters, intriguing politics, lovely romance. But the stand out feature is clearly the magic system. The magic system in this book is so damn cool. From page one I was obsessed with the main character and her powers, and in every battle scene I was on the edge of my seat. I don’t want to spoil too much, so I’ll just say to pick this book up!

while this had caught my attention at first, i quickly lost interest when we switched povs from our fmc to our mmc; i just didn’t necessarily care for his plot. i did find the magic our fmc had interesting: she is able to summon animals that she killed with her own hands — very dark and traumatizing, but interesting nonetheless.

as for the audio — the narrators were find but inflicted dramatic tones too often.

i’m sure this book will find its audience but it’s not me

I DNFed this a few chapters in. I wasn't engaged with the characters. The characters seemed rather simple, and the world building was not what I needed it to be. I like the premise of the FMC collecting the souls of the beasts she kills, but I needed more depth to the rest of the story.

Audio 🎧 Narration 5/5 ✨

Mance, heir to the throne, longs for a reign and life without bloodshed but ever since she was young, she emerged from the arena with the power to summon animals- but only after killing them with her bare hands. Her magic is a constant reminder of the horrors her father (the Prime) has forced upon her for power. She lives every day in fear of what he will make her do next.

Silver is a thief struggling to make ends meet in the world torn apart by Mances father. One day a man full of intrigue, presents him with a job that could change his life, and also a chance to bring down the Prime and his castle. But first he will have to manipulate his daughter Mance the heir.

Mance must find a way to save her realm without becoming the ruthless monster she's been bred to be. And when Silver discovers that his actions are fueling the violence that Mance wants to prevent, he'll have to choose between his ambition and the girl he’s falling for.

This was an ok read. It started off kinda dark with some animal brutally, I wasn’t sure I would finish it. It wasn’t over the top or anything- just I love animals and I didn’t like the way this magic system was presented. It did get better the more I read- but I wasn’t excited about it. The characters were just ok and nothing truly ever got me invested in them. I also felt like there were a good bit of holes throughout the book- and things seemed a bit hollow. The romance was weird and not fully fleshed out. I also thought the ending was super confusing- especially if this ends up being a standalone. The narrator did a great job on it though. Except for the beginning just hitting me in my feels with the animal violence- this was a clean read- but unfortunately because I didn’t really enjoy it - I won’t be recommending it.

Instantly hooked from the start. I wasn’t too sure if I was going to enjoy this one because it is "dark" fantasy and because of the animal cruelty, but I really enjoyed it (not in a "I'm crazy" way). Mancella feels for the animals and doesn’t want to hurt them, but she is forced to kill them and take their power/strength for herself. Mancella’s father wants her to be violent and powerful, but she wants peace and love. I love when I feel a connection to the characters and feel for them as if they’re real.

This was quite the entertaining read!

A girl with the power to summon animals but only those she has killed with her bare hands. A boy who... lives on the outskirts and pretends to be a servant for some reason. These two MCs come together and Mancella fights for her right to the throne.

If u couldn't tell I disliked the main love interest and other main character. He lacked backstory and substance. He was just there to push the plot.

I loved her power to summon animals and how she used them in such unique ways! It was really well thought out and explored which I really loved.

I just feel this book can definitely be read as a standalone and doesn't really need a book 2? It's only the epilogue that reveals a second book on the horizon but if u didn't read it then it's a read single book.

Thank you to MacMillan providing Advanced Reader Copies at YAll Fest this year so I had the opportunity to read this book! This came out on 2/4 :)

3.5 ⭐️

This was a well written YA fantasy with some romance on the side. Though I do think Mancella and Silver’s relationship was progressed appropriately and I liked the flow of their story, I didn’t think their romance was the most important part of the story as a whole. The story about a woman standing up for who she is and what she believes in was the much bigger story here.

Mancella, her family, and the kingdom have been under the tyrannical control of her father her whole life, but she’s always been a fighter. In this world, the corrupted magic decides who the “worthy” people are and gives them special abilities, and the king only allows Mancella to be his “Seconde” because he’s been controlling her magic. Silver enters the palace with plans to steal from the royal family and win him and his friends the freedom they need to live their lives safely away from the king and his unfair rules. When he realizes he needs Mancella to complete the job, the two must decide what lines they are willing to cross for what they want and eventually, how they feel about each other.

Overall, I really liked the characters. Mancella was a strong female lead and Silver was a likable counterpart. Their banter and relationship was believable and enjoyable to read. I liked the side characters as well and felt like they added to the story. I thought the elements of the story were so rich and cool, but a lot of the time I didn’t feel the distinct desire to pick the book back up. I’m not really sure what attributed to this as the writing was good and I liked the story. I had figured out some of the “surprises” pretty early on but not all of them. I do wish we got a little bit more background on their world, especially about the magic system but it wasn’t necessary to understand the story, it’s just such a cool idea that I want to know more. In the end, I enjoyed this and would recommend for a YA fantasy with some darker themes (trigger warning for animal death and child abuse) and a touch of romance.

The Beasts We Bury really surprised me—in the best way. It’s dark, emotional, and super atmospheric, with a magic system that’s as disturbing as it is original. The main character, Mancella, can summon animals… but only by killing them first. Yeah. It’s intense. And that magic isn’t just a gimmick—it’s tightly woven into her identity, her trauma, and the way the world around her uses and abuses power. Her struggle with it is raw and compelling.

I actually really liked Silver’s POV, too. He’s a thief sneaking his way into the palace with secrets of his own, and his chapters brought a different energy—clever, tense, and grounded. The banter between him and Mancella was one of my favorite parts. It added a spark of levity and tension that balanced out the heavier themes, and I was definitely rooting for them (even when I wasn’t totally sure I should be).

There are some intense, dark moments in this book—especially involving animal death—so heads up if that’s a dealbreaker. But the writing is strong, the pacing kept me pulled in, and the whole vibe felt fresh and different.

Highly recommend if you’re into morally gray characters, slow-burn tension, and magic that bites back. I’ll definitely be picking up the sequel

This was really good! It starts off with a bang (with a lot of triggers so be weary). I loved our characters, it's a quick paced book which is what I look for in a fantasy, there was always something happening in the plot. The plot itself was good, I enjoyed the premise of the story and the magic system was well done.

I might have to dive more into some daker fantasies in the future!

the narrators were both great, I think this story really did well having two different narrators!

This was honestly a disappointment for me. It had a really cool premise, and the ideas in world building were very creative. However, the writing and character building was not strong enough to execute all of the author’s ideas. Every other character, besides the protagonist felt pretty too dimensional, even though the love interest had his own POV chapters. He still could’ve been flushed out a little more in my opinion. I did really like our main character though and respected the journey she went on throughout the novel. The dark and complicated themes explored throughout the book were interesting, but the light tone of the writing didn’t mesh with them at all. I didn’t hate this book by any means I am very easy to entertain, but I also definitely didn’t love it. I know there is going to be a sequel and I’m not sure if I will continue with the series, but you never know.

Wow. I started this with no real expectations, but man it was sooo good! I really related to Mancella and thought she was an amazing MC! I also don’t know what the hate is for about Silver. I thought he was a 5/5 and don’t know why everyone is hating on his POV. I thought he had a lot of depth. The romance wasn’t rushed or overpowering but was also satisfying if that makes sense. No PG-13, open door scenes, only kissing but it doesn’t feel juvenile. There is quite a bit of violence and animal abuse/pain, which did make me cry a bit ngl 😭. The poor kitten (iykyk)! So I would probably say 15/16+ because of the violence. It isn’t glorified but it is very present. I will write a better review of this book later but it gets a solid 4.5 ⭐️ from me!! :)

bardzo przyjemna lektura 💫
mam jednak kilka zarzutów:
1. CZEMU GŁÓWNA BOHATERKA JEST AŻ TAK ŁATWOWIERNA XD
jako dziedziczka tronu, jak mogła zaufać silverowi już przy pierwszym spotkaniu i się mu zwierzać 😭
2. komunikacji brak.
połowy sytuacji dało by się uniknąć zwykłą rozmową..

sama książka jednak była bardzo przyjemna, a motyw ze zwierzętami i magią był zdecydowanie powiewem świeżości w romantasy <3

This... was a book. I guess if you like books that use the violent killing of animals more for the shock factor than for any relevant plot or character arc, this book might be for you. Which makes this book sound much worse than it is, really. It's not that bad, I promise. There just wasn't anything here for me, personally, to get invested in. It had interesting parts, but these parts were working to *create a story* more than they existed on their own merit. It could have been better, is what I'm saying.

That being said, I do think there are people who will like this book. Certainly much more than I did. So I'll be digging into that in my full review at Gateway Reviews on March 7, 2025. Stop by if you want!

I can’t believe more people aren’t talking about this book! The Beasts We Bury is perfect for readers who want a YA fantasy with an original plot. I am a little disappointed with the romance (it definitely leans towards the fantasy side of fantasy romance), but overall, I think The Beasts We Bury is a solid read. 3.75 stars rounded up!

In a genre flooded with new releases and overdone tropes, this book stands out. The Beasts We Bury isn’t your typical cut-and-paste YA novel. It has a unique magic system, secret identities, and complex characters that feel like real people. I especially love how the characters navigate the challenges that come with their magic. The FMC, Mancella, can summon the spirit of any creature she kills in a fair fight. I think the author does a wonderful job showing how Mancella grapples with the ethical implications of her magic and her father’s attempts to use her for her power.

And speaking of Mancella’s father, it’s been a while since I’ve read such an unlikable character. He’s the definition of morally gray! Her father is obsessed with gaining more power, which makes his predicament at the end of the story so satisfying. I’m happy (and impressed!) by the author’s ability to pull that plot twist off.

While I love this book’s magic system and character arcs, I have some issues with the romance. I think part of the problem is that I struggled to connect with Mancella. She comes across as entitled and brash—two of my least favorite qualities in a character. Luckily, this book alternates between her POV and that of a street boy posing as a servant. Silver encompasses so many things I like in a MMC: he’s clever, resourceful, and willing to do anything to protect the people he cares about. I also love his witty dialogue! I think the romance between him and Mancella needed more page space to fully develop (, in particular, seems ill-timed and unrealistic), but I still like the idea of them together.

Overall, I enjoyed The Beasts We Bury. 3.75 stars and a solid recommendation! I’ve never read a story with a magic system like this. I think this book is an excellent fit for readers who want a fresh, fantasy-forward YA story. This book comes out on February 4th; make sure to preorder your copy!

This was an exceptional YA fantasy debut that's set in a world of battling kingdoms and sees a power hungry king forcing his daughter to kill animals in order to absorb their powers, grooming her to be a powerful successor and weapon he can wield against his enemies. Full of secrets, betrayals, action, romance and great on audio. I can't wait to see what happens next!! Highly recommended for fans of The witch and the vampire by Francesca Flores. The cover of this really caught my attention and then the synopsis I was like sign me up!

I really didn't know what to expect during my entire reading journey. I thought one thing just to be shocked! The twists wow. Also, the magic and world building was really good!

I really felt for Mancella throughout this book. Even with everything she has endured she has such an open heart. Also, Silver deserves an honorable mention too. He's just trying to create security for him and his friends which leads to some hard choices.

This was a dual narration and both narrators were spectacular! Each character was distinct and easily identifiable.

Thank you to NetGalley, Macmillan Audio, Macmillan Young Listeners, Henry Holt and Co. (BYR), D.L. Taylor, Brenda Scott Wlazlo (audio narrator), and Jake Chronister (audio narrator) for the opportunity to read and listen to the audiobook of The Beasts we Bury in exhange for an honest review.

What a gorgeous and meanigful cover. The flowers are something the main female character, Mancella Cliff, loves, as they represent a sort of freedom and rebellion she doesn't really have when it comes to being next in line for the throne. The animal shape, jaguar-esque, represents the unique magical power that Mancella has, and the way the reader gets to see her use it for the first time. In this world, there is a place called The Citadel, where the children of Primes (the various regional leaders) are forced inside with the hopes that they will reemerge with a new power. While Mancella's older sister, Mara, seemingly comes away with nothing, Mancella is able to kill an animal and have it become a part of her, able to summon it for her use at will. A kitten to cuddle, a horse to ride, or a jaguar to fight for her. This makes her a better candidate for the next Prime, instead of her older sister.

In the world around them, people suffer and struggle. Mancella learns a disturbing truth about how children are treated at the local Academy, and she now knows she must take action as the soon-to-be Prime. She finds out about this from Silver, an orphan boy who once attended the Academy, only to find a somewhat better life as a thief. If he can pull off enough jobs for his benefactor, he might just be able to get a home for his friends and himself to live in. He must disguise himself as a palace servant and steal the impossible (the royal seal; a sacred sword, etc.), and each task becomes more daunting. While he hates the Cliff family for their horrendous and uncaring rule, he gets to know Mancella, and she is nothing like the current Prime, her father. Along the way, Silver becomes attached in a way that may be too deep to pull himself away from.

I was rather enthralled with the craft and story being presented here. There is so much to explore with power dynamics in multiple ways: leadership and war, friendship and family, and literal magic power and the control one or others might have over that. The one thing that pulled me out of the enchantment of this tale, only here and there, was some of the dialogue or events. There were awkward encounters that felt unnatural or placed more for convinience to push the story forward, rather than explore a natural encounter. This was only a few times, but holistically, the narrative was thoroughly enjoyable, engaging, and hard to put down.

With excellent writing craft, alternating first-person perspectives, and an interesting world with a unique form of aquiring magic, this makes for a great enemies-to-lovers romance for young adult readers.

i received an advanced listening copy from the publisher as part of their influencer program. this did not affect my rating.

content warnings: animal death, child abuse (forced to train as soldiers, punishment resulting from this), abusive parent

mancella cliff yearns for a life without bloodshed. as the heir to the throne, though, this is not possible. to strengthen her power, her father forces her to kill animals with her bare hands.

silver is a thief struggling to survive in a world torn by mancella’s father’s reign. when he receives a chance to rob the castle, he sees it as an opportunity to have a real future and get his revenge. as the two work toward their own goals—silver with the heist, mancella with saving her realm—they must decide how much they’re willing to give.

this seemed like such an interesting book. i’ve never read a book featuring powers like mancella’s. (on that note, if you are highly sensitive to animal cruelty/death, i would avoid this book.) i also typically like when there’s a thief/rebel who ends up falling for the royal they were sent to take down. while i did end up enjoying these aspects of the book, unfortunately, the plot just did not do it for me. it was okay, but pretty basic, so it didn’t quite captivate me like i’d hoped it would. with that said, i can see the author’s potential. i’d be willing to give her another try should she write more books.

narration: there were two narrators, brenda scott wlazlo and jake chronister, to reflect the dual pov in the book. i thought the narrators did a good job of narrating this book!

The Beasts We Bury started off pretty strong with the introduction of the unique but brutal magic Mancella possesses. Mancella and her family were really well developed. But I think the weakest spots of the book were Silver and the romance. Silver in all honesty was very bland. He had the personality of a sheet of paper, and the only time he looked semi interesting is when Mancella was fawning over him. Speaking of that, the romance felt extremely forced. I don't think this book needed the romance at all.

Despite the negativity I feel toward Silver and the romance, I thought the book was good. The pages kept turning. Mancella really carried the book imo. I thought she was strong and fierce. She went through a lot and came out stronger and better despite her hardships.

Not sure if I will read the second book.

3.75 rounded up to 4 ⭐️. At first, I was unsure about the premise of this plot when I began the story. It took some time to really get the feel of this strangeness of magic in this world, but once I did, I was really eager to see how the FMC would cope and grow in her character amidst the challenges she faced, especially her self-serving, cruel father. I was really pleased with the friendships she developed in uncommon places and how those ultimately favored her triumph in her situation. The story flowed well and stayed engaging. I like to express thanks to NetGalley and MacMillan Audio for an ALC of this YA title.
