Unfortunately she loves her best friend, who loves the girl she hates most, and Twell is left frustrated & heartbroken.

When Twell is requested alongside several other teens to develop her skills for the protection of Como, she reluctantly agrees to the training, and finds herself thrown into all sorts of mental and physical challenges.

When Como is attacked, life as Twell knows it is changed forever, with devastating consequences. With no choice but to fight, Twell risks her life to protect those who have survived, coming up against unexpected dangers she could never anticipate. Will she survive, and if so will she be matched to a stranger when the one she is growing to love is destined to another?

Kate O'Leary, has loved reading and writing ever since she was young enough to try and get through the back of her cupboard into Narnia, or through her mirror into Wonderland! In high school she entertained her homeroom reading out chapters of her first novel 'Miranda' about a teenage girls adventures with her horse Rusty.

After school Kate studied Children's Literature, and her first drafts of Twell were awarded in writing competitions. Kate's writing interest is firmly embedded in dystopian fantasy, being continually fascinated with future direction of our world and the concepts of free will and moral vs. lawful obligations. Twell's adventures will continue to explore these ideas in the Como Chronicles Trilogy.

Kate lives in the beautiful Adelaide in the South of Australia, surrounded by beaches, rolling hills and wineries and horses, as well as some good rocks to climb when she feels like scaring herself!

NnnnnnnnnnOooooooooooooo....not Silver eyes! Can't believe it ended there revealing the wrong eye colour when in fact I wanted them to be brown *hystetically waiting now to read the next book* What a cliffhanger!

That above paragraph might not make any sense to those who haven't read this book but for those who have, you all know what I mean. I'm dying to know the outcome of that ending and what's install for Twell, Jonaz, Mira and the rest of the characters in this hearstopping story set in another world.

Filled with X-men like action, our characters possess powers that will help in the fight against a terror that is hell bent on stealing their planet for water. These aliens already have slaughtered their people of Como in the past and for generations they have lived in peace, under the watchful eye of the Governing Body, which was put in place to keep everyone in line and basically tell them how to live their lives. Hence, lack of free will is necessary for order and restraint in Como, creating a place free of violence. Because of this citzens are even matched by the Governing Body according to their DNA, making love matches very rare and often times forbidden. Freedom of choice is the biggest sacrifice for Peace. Which doesn't go over too well with out main protagonists. I mean, who would want the government telling them what to do all the time, even when it came to love?! Not me, that's for sure.

I was taken quite by surprise with this book, not really having heard anything about it until the author approached me about reading it in exchange for my review, which I would love to thank her for. I don't do R4R's much when I do the story has to be captivating and exciting, and that it is. I thoroughly enjoyed the read and couldn't put it down. If you too love some action set in a dystopian/sci-fi alternate reality, with some romance thrown in for good measure, then I highly recommend this read. I'm looking forward to the next instalment especially after that ending.

I really enjoyed this. Twell for all her flaws - and she is flawed - is an engaging heroine. The plot kept me interested, the story world is believable and the relationships between the characters developed in unexpected ways. This is a great young adult fiction that shows maturity in how certain themes are developed - I especially liked Twell's growing understanding of how her own character needs to change and the reflections on war. (As an aside I found it personally interesting that I did still like Twell and cared about her journey despite her bratty behaviour - some clever writing there).

If you are after YA dystopian/fantasy I'd recommend this over Twilight or Hunger Games or Divergent. The heroine starts as a very authentic teenager who grows up and in good ways as well as in her ability to fight.

I received a copy of this from the author in exchange for my honest review and was pleasantly surprised. I am glad I read this.

Just a perfect new Dystopian book that you must read now!

Twell is in love with her best friend. Unfortunately he loves the girl she hates the most. She requests then to develop her skills to protect the new world of Como, she goes into training with mental and physical challenges and meets Jonaz, an infuriating guy that likes to provoke her. Then Como is attacked and everything changes.

This book is one of the best YA I’ve read so far this year, it kept me on edge and I just finished screaming for more. Kate O’Leary is an amazing writer, you just devour the book and I’m more than looking forward to the next one. Please let it be soon!

I am a total geek for evolved mental powers- Zenna Henderson's "The People" books made me wish that I was gifted, and I read them again and again. Kate O'Leary's book totally would have been one that I devoured over and over as a teenager. Twell is just trying to fit in to her engineered, tidy world, but her telekinetic gift sometimes comes in handy, especially when the infuriatingly handsome Jonaz is showing off. Her biggest worry is that she'll soon be partnered with a stranger whom the governing body deems most genetically compatible, while she nurses unrequited love for her best friend. But when Twell and several of her classmates are singled out for military training due to their special abilities, her gifts are no longer a game- they are a weapon. Their innocence is quickly stripped away by violence and war, and the enemy, so long faceless to this generation of Comians, are disconcertingly young and a lot like Twell and her mates. I love how you are never sure who you can trust, and the feeling that the governing body is very carefully giving them only the information they need to know to foster their feelings of patriotism...but is it really the truth? The last few chapters had me literally sitting on the edge of my seat. I cannot wait for the next book!!

This book has to be one of the most underrated yet fantastic dystopian books I have ever read. Seriously? Why do people not know about this? I can see this as a TV show or movie... Enough about that. The writing is fantastic and the ending is evil! I need book 2 like NOW! Go pick up this book if you haven't already.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my review in any way and the thoughts expressed are my own.

This sci-fi dystopian follows Twell Anar, an average High School student gifted with telekinetic powers. She lives in Caran on Como, a beautiful planet controlled by The Governing Body (The G. B.). Twell’s world is full of strict rules but she’s so used to it she doesn’t question it. Years ago, the Comians fought against the Abwarzians who attempted to steal Como’s water. In the process, many children were orphaned and new rules were put in place, including the law that allows the government to choose your job and your partner based solely on your DNA. Abwarz is a dried-up planet, desperate for water, making the Comians nervous of another attack. The Abwarzians have been demonised, heightening the people’s fear. This story follows Twells story but also the story of her people and their planet.

Twell has never openly displayed her powers in from of people except for her friends and her guardian, Shay. Despite her best efforts she’s been noticed and enrolled in specialist training to develop her abilities. It’s interesting that though every Comian is gifted with some low-level abilities Twell and her fellow trainees still hide theirs. I think this mostly stems from their desire to get some privacy from the G. B. who monitor everything they do, even tracking their location. Talk about Big Brother! We see Twell develop, gaining confidence in herself and her powers and making new friends with her training classmates. Her classmates are entertaining and make a good supporting cast.

Of course, there’s a love triangle. . . Twell loves Chaz but he’s dating Mira, a real bitch in the beginning. Jonaz is the school playboy, with a new girl every day. Twell can’t stand him but as they get to know each other she finds herself drawn to him, though she knows better. It was disappointing to read about such a stereotype, girl hates boy at the start but by the end they get together, let alone two. Can’t someone just hate someone else without dating them by the end? Still, I was entertained and eager to see if Twell got together with who I expected. To make her love life even more complicated, at the end of the year the G. B. will assign her a partner who she’s expected to marry and eventually have children.

As with many dystopians the government monitors everyone and censors what they deem too controversial. To make this novel more unique the government has taught the people they are pacifists with no violent desires whatsoever. Twell’s conflicted throughout the novel, she knows what she’s supposed to be like but her temper repeatedly gets the better of her. This makes her feel like even more of a freak. I like that Twell isn’t some meek girly-girl who gets along with everyone and never wants to hit anyone. It makes her feel more well-rounded, more real. She is a very flawed character but over the novel she develops and grows, learning more about her world, her late parents and herself. The Abwarzians have dried up features and are thought to be filled only with hate and greed but of course, the Abwarzians aren’t nearly as simple as that just like the Comians.

The G. B. want Twell and her friends to join a new team they’ve created called The Army of Powers in anticipation for the next Abwarzian attack. The training is brutal and the trainers are almost sadistic, especially Raze who seems to have it in for Twell. Just reading about the training made my body ache. They’re just lucky they have someone with a healing ability. On that note, it’s interesting how the boy who can heal people could reverse it and cause horrible pain, it’s something I hadn’t thought of before and was a unique take on it. Plus, the boy had an interesting backstory around his powers.

I did find it frustrating that many of the characters’ names started with 'm’. It made it very hard to keep track of who was who, especially when trying to figure out who had which power. The paragraphs were very long which made reading feel like a chore, especially by the end. Even so, I was entertained and eager to see what would happen. I’m especially keen to see what happens in the next book thanks to the cliff-hanger. I can’t wait to see Twell’s reaction to her husband! I give it a 4/5.

Wow, I really enjoyed this one and I'm super eager to start Book 2! I found the plot and characters intriguing, and both kept me flying through the pages. Twell, to be honest, is a bit of a brat. But I love stories where you get to see characters transform and mature. And while she is bratty at times, she still comes off as a character you like. Don't ask me to explain how that is possible; all I can say is that she grows on you.

I felt like O'Leary did a good job of world building; and the story, as well as the emotions and questioning Twell journeys through were believable. The relationships with friends/frenemies really engaged me, and I am looking forward to seeing what is ahead for Twell and the others.

That was just stunning, so much drama, anguish, terror and amazingly love in one awesome story.

This was my first read from Kate O'Leary and I have to say I was extremely impressed, her main characters have such a raw edge to them for such young people, they have a wonderful mixture of maturity and teen drama which melds well together in both a humorous and serious way all at the same time due to the world they live in and Twell and her powerful friends are held to a higher standard because their DNA gifted them with special powers.

I found the customs described in this world fascinating, where everyone is just meant to do whatever the governing body says from partnering, to family to jobs I totally understand Twells need to rebel and I'm yelling 'go for it'.

I'm seriously looking forward to book 2

Twell is a young adult novel set in a new world. After earth, Como is born and their rules are very different to what we know. Twell is struggling through her day-to-day life at school; coupled with the fact that she is living with a guardian because she doesn't know her parents and the fact that in only a few moons, she is destined to be partnered with another como male and reproduce. Twell is stuck between a rock and a hard place and hates the fact that there is no choice awarded to her. Things only get worse when she and a group of other teens are called aside and told that due to their powers, they are being asked to come together to train to prepare for a war the governing body suspect is coming. Again Twell doesn't really have a choice in the matter and while she goes back and forth about what is right and what she wants to do, it soon becomes clear that without her and the rest of the team, there is no hope for Como.

Twell is a well written, fast paced book. Twell herself is a fantastic character who, to me, reflects the epitome of a strong female character; she knows her mind and she's not afraid to show it. The author develops the world in a natural way letting the reader in on the new world without bombarding with too much information.

Although reading something so future-centric and almost sci-fi isn't normally what I'd go for, I couldn't resist this and I know I'll be picking up the next book in the series.

Twill and the army of powers
Twill lives in Coma a new world and has neglected her telekinetic powers as she just wants to be normal. But life was not normal for Twil,l she will be genetically partnered with a boy by her next birthday that she does not know or even love. This seems all wrong for her as she does love someone.. her best friend and who is in love with her enemy which has left her heartbroken and looking for what to do next. Twill and some fellow class mates are given an opportunity to develop their powers to help Coma. They soon realize their gifts are going to be used as a weapon.
The description the author uses has your imagination picturing this new word and the twist and turns will keep you wanting more. Twill is a girl with determination, she faces the unknown and fights for her country and for her life. This fantasy story has a bit of everything that will keep you totally entertain and wanted more at the end. Lucky as this is just book 1 and you have 2 more to read. I recommend this great book. This is my honest review of this book that I have voluntarily decided to review.

This is the first book by this author that I have read. It is also the first book of the genre I have read. I won a copy of the book in a giveaway, and when I first started reading it, I wasn't sure if I would enjoy it or not, but I actually loved the book, so much so that I went and bought it and the next book in the series.
It follows Twell, a young girl who was orphaned as an infant. Twell lives on Como and has special powers that their governing body says can help their world against attack. So Twell and some other gifted teens start training in preparation for joining Como's army.
The book has a bit of everything. A bit of young love, suspense, action, and a small cliffhanger, which is okay since book two is out.
Looking forward to getting stuck into book two now.

I think this is a great YA series. The personal drama angle continued in this one, with Twell caught between her love for Jonas and her growing attraction to her GB-sanctioned match Avin. As she ships off to be trained in the Army of Powers, her problems intensify and part of her challenge is working out what she believes and what she should fight for, with other strong personalities trying to inform her choices. I like the themes that drive this, and the nuanced discussion of the ethics of war, but there are also lots of interesting plot twists which sustained my interest throughout. And that ending was totally unexpected. I look forward to the next book.

As a Gen-X guy who's never read a dystopian fantasy novel, besides Orwell's 1984, and watching Avatar, I'm kinda blown-away by Kate O'Leary's, Twell & The Army of Powers.

The first few pages held my absolute attention, and by page forty-eight, I was hooked, not going anywhere, strapped-in, and enjoying the ride.

I have to admit, I was a little apprehensive and skeptical of a fantasy novel with a teen heroine being 'good', yet, in contrast, I found myself liking, Twell, and actually loving her attitude, her little quirks, her rolling eyes, references to fashion and decor, especially right in the middle of the most intense situations, when least expected!

What I love about O'Leary's writing style, is her ability to blend the characters thoughts with dialogue, plus inject subtle, yet clevery designed prose, to what may-or-may-not be lurking around the next page. I didn't just read, Twell & The Army of Powers, the author helped me imagine.

Twell's, got heart, soul, passion, and grit. My vivid imagination ran merrily away picturing myself as a big Hollywood producer pondering which mega-talented teen actress I'd cast to play her, when adapting, Twell & The Army Of Powers for the big-screen.

My intentions of reading, Twell, were out of pure curiosity, before I handed the hard-copy over to my squad of dystopian-fantasy-devouring book-savvy teen-nieces, but actually turned into me falling in love with Twell's character. Now I'm eagerly awaiting the next explosive installment!

It seems, Kate O'Leary ain't just a pretty face, and neither is, Twell. If I had to write a review in one sentence, I'd say; "This novel is killer, from start-to-finish, refreshingly G-rated, funny, fun, timely, relevant and a story with an important message.

I'd recommend, Twell and The Army of Powers, to teen boys, girls, and their parents, or anyone who likes to hope and imagine.

Enjoy!

Taking control of everyone and everything is what dystopia is really about. You can’t have one without the other. That being said, I highly enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read the next in the series!! Talk about angst and drama! I’m totally upset (not really) about the cliff hanger ending.

Being in love with her best friend and not being able to have him is painful for Twell. Her best friend being with someone she hates is downright heartbreaking. My heart broke for her throughout this book. While she is resigned to adhere to the ways that the governing body imposes, she has a rebellious side. The threat of war has Twell and other young people with powers forced to become soldiers. Her life is pretty much turned upside down after that. She is forced to grow up too fast and is finding out that things are not as they seem.

First off, I didn’t think that this book would be so emotional. I can relate to her pain about unrequited love. The Governing Body of Como gave little information to satisfy my curiosity on the upcoming war. You don’t know who is friend or foe, and when truths are revealed, you find yourself feeling sympathy for a character that you disliked so much in the beginning. The plot twists are endless. Just when you think it’s over, you are slammed with something else. I am really looking forward to the next book because I just have to know what will happen next.

Great world building and character development!
The emotions run high in this book and made the characters believable in every way.
I liked the heart racing declaration of affection shown towards Jonaz and would love to see him and Twell together!!
I can do romance that isn’t entirely a “Love Triangle” (kudos to the author), but more of a unperceiving matter.
I would definitely recommend this book to lovers of dystopia and fantasy!

Twell and the Army Of Powers is a YA dystopian novel about a future in which the Governing Body dictates every choice in a person's life, including who they will marry. Twell is fast approaching the time for her partnering and she dreads it. She has a rebellious spirit she must constantly hide in a world where conformity and obedience are the only acceptable behaviors. But when the threat of war looms over Como and the Governing Body gathers up Twell and other young people with powers to train as soldiers, everything in her life is flipped upside down.

The titular character, Twell, goes from being a mostly ordinary teenager to a soldier over the course of the book. This is handled in a very believable manner. Her character grows and changes as the story progresses and each moment of it feels real and natural, not forced as is often seen in stories of this nature. As she learns truths about herself and those around her, as she suffers through traumatic experiences, she remains herself even as she changes. She's forced to grow up too fast, made to understand that people are not always as they seem to be, and that there are two sides to every war.

This is a powerful book full of emotion, both negative and positive. Each character is unique, interesting, and believable. The story flows in a wonderfully natural way, with moments levity interspersed with the harshness of realty. Scenes of romance and action are perfectly balanced to make this a nice roller coaster ride of ups and downs with a few surprising twists along the way.

I'm sorry to see this book end and I eagerly await the sequel. If you enjoy YA dystopian, you should definitely give this one a try. It's brilliant.

Twell and the Army of Powers was a wonderful book! The dystopian twist with the story was oh so interesting and the story itself kept me reading to the very end. I am seriously having trouble finding words on how freaking amazing this book is. My mind is blown that not more people know about this book, and with that, I recommend this to everyone. It's seriously on my top 5 list, without a doubt.

The story itself was really great, especially for a dystopian novel. I loved the way that the story evolved, and the abrupt and very shocking twists and turns that the story took had me gaping at the book. Seriously, this book blew my mind. Things that I never could have predicted by what I had read up until that point happened, which threw me completely off guard, and had me hooked indefinitely.

I love that the main character wasn't the generic "no good at anything and scared of everything" girl but she wasn't a "I'm a badass and good at everything" girl either. She was just a normal girl, who got scared, had bravery, got jealous, and all of the normal emotions of an average teenage girl.

The book itself was really well written. I loved the inner monologue of the main character. I also really liked the world that they lived in. It was imaginative and absolutely perfect for a dystopian novel. I have fallen in love with this book, and I'm sure you will too. I can't wait to read the next book, Twell & The Rebellion. Awesome job, Kate! I am definitely giving this book 5 out of 5 stars!!

Twell and the Army of Powers is the first book in the Como Chronicles. It gives us an in-depth view into the lives of those who live there, how their lives are regulated, what is forbidden, and what isn't. Twell is the main character, and the story is told from her perspective, yet is still rounded out enough that you don't feel like you are missing out on anything.

Twell is a bit of a brat at the start of the book, and I mean that in the nicest possible way. Her character grows in ways unforeseen, by her own actions and by the 'gentle' advice from her friends. All of the characters have grit though, whether you like them or not. There is not a weak character among them, and they all grow and change throughout the book.

There is so much I want to say about this book, but won't in case of spoilers. Things happened that I never saw coming; my heart was broken on more than one occasion; it jumped into my mouth as I desperately held onto hope (even knowing that the author wouldn't make it so easy). The story is concise and gripping, thrilling and action-packed, ending on a cliffhanger that had me shouting out "NO!" even though I had already suspected the outcome!

This is a fantastic Young Adult Dystopian story with a dash of romance, that is guaranteed to enthral the reader. Absolutely recommended by me.

* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and my comments here are my honest opinion. *

I read this a LONG time ago (like, right when it was released!) so it kills me to find I haven't written a review yet!

Twell is a girl in future, living on the planet Como. She's a little immature and always quick to judge, but at the same time she's very likable. Twell is also in love with her best friend.... who is completely smitten with a girl Twell despises. Not that it matters anyway because in order to ensure the strongest race, the Como Government does not allow a couple to just BE together, instead they are matched genetically.

The other thing about Twell? She has super powers. Tekelenesis to be precise. She's not alone either. And when the Governing Body sends a representative to school to enlist Twell and a number of her classmates who also have various super powers Twell is thrown into a war she doesn't want to fight.

We get to watch Twell grow a lot in this story. Starting out as an immature school girl who takes her powers for granted and ending up a warrior, fighting for her people.

If you like futuristic, dystopian stories with romance, this is a good one to read.

* DISCLAIMER: I do work for the company that published this book and I designed the cover, however my opinions are 100% my own and true. I like this book!

Stick with it! It gets so much better!
I really enjoyed the story! It starts rather slowly, but really picks up around the halfway mark. Twell starts out as a bit of a judgmental type...But really grows into who she is, and it's fascinating to watch/read as she transitions from childhood into young adulthood. Mira, another character, starts out seeming like really an obnoxious prat (as does Jonaz), but learning about who they are, why they are who they are, and watching them grow as well, was an excellent example of not judging people. The environment and world were well built, while keeping it interesting. The story was definitely worth sticking it out through the slower beginning, just to see where they all ended up!
The writing was mostly immersive and I cant wait to see what happens in the next book!

Note: I was given a free copy, but not in exchange for a review. I wrote the review because I read the book, and all books should have plenty of reviews to look through!

Twell lives on the planet Como, she is a descendant of ancient earth and has evolved with a special power. When Twell reaches 180 moons (this is how they measure time) she will be DNA matched with a selected partner, which she feels very troubled by.
The planet is attacked by a neighbouring planet who want to steal their pure water sources. Twell along with many others are enlisted into the Army of Powers to train to fight to protect their world.
Twell is torn between the boy she loves, the laws of her planet, the war and her upcoming partnership. Will she follow her head or her heart ?
I absolutely love this book, I can’t wait to read book 2 (Twell and the Rebellion). This was a really well written and descriptive book, it kept me gripped, captured my imagination and I connected well with the characters. A really good read.

What an amazing story ! Kate O'Leary is now my fave author. I have a habit of seeing books as movies when i read them but this one had me wishing there really was one i could watch. You cant help but love Twell for all her feistyness (is that even a word?) yet she is vunerable, Kate O'Leary makes you feel like you ARE Twell because you understand her so much !
I dont want to give anything away but the world of Como with its familiar yet alien technology and super controllling Government (also familiar!!) makes you want Twell to succeed in becoming who you just know she can be......
Really well written, with a few Aussie slang words thrown in which made me laugh, and totally engrossing. I cant wait to see what this author does next because if its anything like TWELL, ill be the first in line to buy it !

The daughter of one of my teachers wrote this book and so that was how I stumbled across Twell. My friend, (another avid reader) read it first and then loaned it to me, saying I would like it (but that it would also have a slow beginning), however I still took on the challenge. I disagree with her, although it didn't have a straight into action beginning, I was still hooked! It was sweet and full of explanation and I understood it all perfectly. The book continued into an epic story of Twell and her other friends, training in the army of powers on their planet Como. This book was very interesting and while you can tell it is a first book and is a little bit cliché, it was still fantastic and I CANT WAIT TO READ THE NEXT ONE! Good job Kate O'Leary

I really loved this book! Earth has been destroyed and a new world colonized with space pods, peaceable people and a secretive governing body! Twell is a beautiful young woman with special powers who would love to just fit in. Unfortunately, her world is on the edge of war over the natural resources on her planet. Forced to join the Army of Powers she must learn to use her gifts to save her planet and the lives of those around her. Strong female characters and a fast moving story make this book hard to put down. This story has a well built plot and interesting world building and I will recommend it to my friends.

I don't usually reads books but after reading some raving reviews I decided that I would give it a go. I'm so glad that I did because the creative power of this book had me hooked. I loved reading every single page and didn't want to put it down. I liked the characters and how I was taken to a completely different world while reading this superb book. When I reached the end I was in suspense to know what was going to happen next. I'm looking forwar to reading the second one. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone which is why I gave Twell and the army of powers ( the como Chronicles book 1) 5 stars.

It's a page turning delight!
Book two was excellent. The first two chapters were slow, and once I hit chapter three, I couldn't put it down. I found myself alternately cheering, booing, and questioning everything.
I choked up a little at one point, and couldn't stop reading. Now I impatiently await the third installment, anxious to learn the resolutions to the world problems, Twell's problems, Comian problems, and I'm sad the next book isn't out yet. Bravo to the author for a story well-told.

Note: i received a free copy from the author. Not in exchange for a review tho. I just like leaving reviews, and this story definitely deserved a good one!!

Wow. I loved this book. At first I didn't know what to think of Tell, but I wanted to read more and more about a little over halfway through. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the book in the beginning too but I didn't feel the compel to read and read like I did further in. I liked almost all of the characters and felt sad for them at tines because of stuff that happened. I couldn't believe some of it. I was sad when this book ended. I absolutely can't wait to read the second one! This book is worth the read.

This book is truly exceptional book, and it needs as much notice as it can get so more people aren't missing out on it. I love the author and how she took you to another world in the book. The author made characters that are easy to like or dislike. There splashes of suspense, some mystery, some romance and some comedy. It's a very well rounded book. Looking forward to book two. This is such an addictive read, I couldn't put it down, the anticipation of waiting for book two is killing me. Kate Oleary has done an incredible job of capturing teenage angst, it brought back those teenage feelings of excitement and emotion. The story is engaging and confronting. The characters likeable and believable. I can most certainly see this becoming a movie. Bring on book two : )
