Music brought us together. Love tore us apart.

Growing up, Wilder Ashburn was the hero I worshipped.
I was the pigtailed pest who never left him alone.

Everything changed the day I gave him a poem.
For the first time, he saw me...
And then he reached for his guitar.

From that moment on, we were entangled.
Bound by music and a shared dream.

Along the way, we made
To always stay the same,
To never let anything come between us,
And above all, to never, ever fall in love.

But it turns out our promises were poison,
Corrupted long before spoken.
And for us, there is no antidote.

Falling in love was as inevitable as stardom,
And it would destroy us both.

What To Expect:

- Heavy Angst

- Childhood Best Friends

- Musical Soulmates

- Anxiety + Addiction Rep

- Dual POV

I can appreciate the addiction rep, but this was very lust driven and I didn’t believe the love story - this will definitely be for someone else, but sadly wasn’t for me

This book wrecked me emotionally, in the most personal, gut-wrenching way. I saw so much of myself in Eva that it hurt. Her pain, the shock and unknowing, her resilience, the way she clung to hope even when everything felt impossible… I’ve lived through that. Reading her journey felt like reopening old wounds and healing them at the same time.

And then there’s Wilder. His portrayal of addiction is one of the rawest I’ve ever read. It wasn’t romanticized or sugar-coated... it was messy, heartbreaking, and so real. You want to love him, you want to shake him, you want to hate him, you want to save him… but most of all, you just see him. His pain. His talent. His slow unraveling. It was devastatingly beautiful.

The writing? Stunning. Lyrical. Honest. This book doesn’t hold back, it digs into the darkest parts of love, trauma, and self-destruction, and somehow turns them into something achingly poetic. The chemistry between Eva and Wilder is electric, but it’s the emotional weight behind it all that really pulled me under.

And THAT ENDING, or should I say cliffhanger?? I’m screaming. Counting down the seconds until the next book. If you’ve ever loved someone who’s broken, or been the broken one yourself, this book will hit you like a punch to the chest.

Color me intrigued… obviously I need to run to book 2 after that ending.

Didn’t love the MMC in this one ngl.. kind of made the book hard to get into at times. The FMC was solid and I loved her dad. The MMC’s addiction / mental health issues were v accurate and interesting

Sadly this wasn’t for me. I just didn’t feel the love between the characters at all. I definitely think I needed more emotional depth as it felt very lust heavy. I would’ve loved to see the characters relationship in the past more.. once the spice hit, I found myself skipping through because I just felt.. nothing.

Look, I never grew out of my Tumblr phase, so a rockstar romance is always going to hit so good for me 😌

This is tumultuous love at its finest! It may at times feel star-crossed, but I have hope for them… they’re musical soulmates! They have to end happy 😩🙏

Wilder, my broken boy 🥺 god, I just wanted to hug him anytime he trembled 😭 he’s neurotic and considers himself “poison,” so in his messed-up way of trying to protect the people he loves from his darkness, he’ll choose all the worst ways of distancing himself. You’ll hate him at times because he really is an asshole when he wants to be, but you can’t help but sympathise with him.

Evangeline Sullivan is a law unto herself: impossible to subvert, immune to external force. She’ll never need me like I need her. As more fragments of my soul break free, flying into her keeping, I decide it doesn’t matter. She can have them. Every last piece of me. I’d rather be lost in her than found anywhere else.

Evangeline, even with her fear of the dark, is so strong she’s fearless in going her own way and making a name for herself on her merits. Even in the face of a man like Wilder, she will still stand ten toes down on an “it’s not my job to fix him” mentality, which slay, yes girl - personally, my self respect goes out the window for a pierced 🍆 but love that for her 🙌🏼 she deserves better

I don’t want to stay. Not in the dark—not even for him.

This was my first time reading anything by L.M. Halloran, and it definitely won’t be the last. Her writing is so beautiful, to the detriment of my Kindles highlights. Trying to narrow down 100 highlights for 5/6 slides for IG edits has me sad having to part with them 🥲 everything was just so poetic and had me in my feels 😩 and how she writes addiction and mental health is just so real and feels handled with care.

Need to include this quote because holy hell 🥵

“This is what you wanted, huh? Me off the leash? Fucking your cunt like it’s mine?” She nods. “Good. You are mine. Do you understand? My dirty, needy girl. My little toy. No one else’s. This pussy only comes on my cock, my mouth, my fingers.”

Gut wrenching. I loved it 😌 Both delivered beautifully from fuck yous to I love yous. The shakiness of someone having a breakdown will never fail to make me cry, and as a ♋️ this is the shit I live for

The story build up gave off lust more than love. All interactions had undertones of them just wanting to constantly go at it. For childhood best friends to lovers I expected more romance or build up of their relationship but all I got was sexual tension.

Eva seemed like she had no self worth, she was okay being a virgin and watching Wilder flaunt his sexcapades in front of her for years until she cut him off. Then when they do have sex Wilder tells her he’s in an open relationship and had already got the go ahead from his girlfriend to have sex with Eva!? And she just accepts this and has sex with him 😭 nothing scream love than “my gf said it’s ok for me to fuck you once to get you out my system”. He showed no respect for Eva. Also, him dumping his gf wasn’t even his idea his friend had to tell him to do it! (The gf who he’s been with for 6+ months and also lives with). I just couldn’t connect to them as a couple and there wasn’t much redeemable in their relationship.

There’s also a scene where he has to stop her from giving him a BJ and remind her that they are in her place of work AT A SCHOOL with kids in classes around them. During this scene she’s thinking of how turned on she is and has a little memory flash back of when they were kids. Like why? Why would you combine the smut with childhood memories? This is why it just fell flat there was no depth to their relationship other than pure lust.

Also sick of the whole virgin & manwhore trope. At least Eva in this didn’t give her virginity to Wilder but fucking hell she may as well of done since she tells him no other man has made her orgasm and she’s pretty much inexperienced anyway 🙄 justice for the FMCs who don’t have good sex outside of MMCs!

This follows Eva and Wilder, who grew up together and have always shared a special connection through music—each other’s muse. But as time goes on, Wilder’s actions push Eva away, and they grow distant. Can they find their way back to each other, or will the challenges they face keep pulling them apart?

What an emotional gripping read. Two characters destined for each other—soulmates. Eva couldn’t resist her feelings and always gave in. She also couldn’t see what was really going on with Wilder. Time and time again, Eva would pick Wilder up, and he would find a way to push her away. Both were battling emotions fueled by passion and a connection that was undeniable. This story explores addiction and mental health through a character barely holding on to the one person who could pull them out—but it’s never that simple. The challenges they face begin to crack the foundation of their bond.

I’m a sucker for angsty reads, but I wanted more angst. I felt like Wilder got away with too much, and Eva gave in too quickly. I was hoping for more groveling, especially after everything he put her through over the years.

Lastly, the audiobook is fantastic, and I highly recommend picking it up in that format. The narrators truly brought the characters to life and captured their emotions beautifully. I’m looking forward to the next book in this duet.

The story was okay, but I really wished for more depth when it came to the characters. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel any real connection or empathy for the two main ones – they just didn’t click with me emotionally.

The three stars ⭐️ are honestly me being kind, because it was a nice enough read for in between heavier books. But if I’m being totally real, it leaned more toward a two-star experience for me.

Ahh I’m literally obsessed with The Perfect Song Duet! It’s a rockstar romance and WOW… Wilder will make you 𝘴𝘸𝘰𝘰𝘯!! 𝙁𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩 𝙑𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙚 is book 1 in the duet and it’s filled with pure unfiltered raw love mixed with mental health obstacles, life crippling addiction, heart wrenching moments, and two characters who will claw their way into your heart. Eva and Wilder are childhood friends and have loved each other since she was in diapers and it has always been them against the world, until fame and popularity alter their lives when their band takes off. This book ends on a gut wrenching cliff hanger that will force you to dive into book 2, not even second guessing anything else you have to do. This book is a spicy rockstar romance but don’t be deceived, your blood pressure and heart rate will very likely hit new heights! 😩

it's been so long since I stayed up all night reading a book I literally couldn't not put down. I have never read this author before, but I wanted a rockstar romance with so much crippling angst it hurt, and when I stumbled upon the ARC sign up form, it felt like fate. Not only was one of my favorite authors saying this was a must-read (hi Brit!), but the blurb had my needy hands grabbing for more. And when I was accepted for the ARC, and it was downloaded on my Kindle? Nothing could stop me.

I will preface this by saying Wilder is someone I would usually hate. He's toxic, he's manipulative, and he's often cruel because he can't stand anyone to get too close. He has the fuckboy personality down to a T and all of that would have been an immediate turn off, if he wasn't in so much pain. From the very moment we meet him, you can tell he's running from demons he's not ready to acknowledge, demons he doesn't fully understand. Every cruel barb, every twisted word, every ounce of pain he inflicts, he feels on himself twice as much. The only time he ever feels somewhat comfortable is around his Evangeline. You can't even begin to describe what she is to him -- they have always known each other and even though he's always felt a kinship to her that he doesn't feel for anyone else, he doesn't really see her until one day they write a song together, and then it's like looking at the sun; she burns so bright you can't help but stare, and when you close your eyes for reprieve you still feel her glow. They form this attachment together that goes far beyond friends, lovers or anything else you can really define. They are truly the other half of one another, but Wilder is so afraid of eclipsing her light, that he keeps shoving her away -- not even realizing it that he's hurting her far worse than he thinks. They do this push and pull dance for years, until they FINALLY are on the same page.. but what happens when you finally have everything you never let yourself dream you'd have? What happens when you get the one thing you love more than anything else in the world, but yet it doesn't quiet your demons? Do you hold on tighter while your world spins around you, or do you crash and burn?

I saw so much of myself in Eva. She's not naive, she's not a doormat, she's not letting some asshole with good cheekbones and a huge pierced 🍆 ruin her because he can -- she just believes in Wilder. Believes that he is the man she's always known he could be, believes that if he could just see what's in front of him he wouldn't be so scared, and she believes their love might be the thing that can save them both. Her belief is her strength, and even though there were times when she had to walk away and place boundaries for her own sanity, she never stopped believing in him. Even when her own family was telling her not to trust him so blindly with her heart, all she saw was the boy she's always been in love with. She didn't see the rockstar with the drug problem neither of them could admit, she didn't see his mood swings as an obstacle, she didn't let their past deter her -- she just saw him. And for a little while, that was enough; them living in this blissful limbo where nothing bad could touch them, and just finally being in love like they always wanted .. but we all know love isn't enough. And the drop hurts like hell.

Eva and Wilder are messy, chaotic, toxic, trauma bonded, and forever intertwined, but they are also soul mates. They have their own traumas and obstacles they need to overcome, but beyond all the pain, these two are magic together. It's what kept me up all night reading in the first place - underneath everything else, you can not deny the love these two have for one another.

I definitely got my wish when I said I wanted something so angsty it hurt-- my chest physically aches and I am in tears knowing that for now I have to say goodbye to these characters that I love so much. I know the road back won't be easy, but I truly can't wait! This is the kind of book that makes the pain feel beautiful, and honestly, that's the highest compliment I could give.

Now, the writing blew me away. Like I said, I've never read this author before, but she had a new fan for life. The poetic way this was written with such tenderness and care without romanticizing anything was just beautiful. As soon as I started, I could not stop, I just had to know how it ended .. and even though I knew it was going to be a cliffhanger, it still hurt so good!

I also want to commend our author for how she handled the unwavering look at drug abuse and how it wasn't glorified whatsoever and how addiction firmly has you in its grasp, even if you can't stop the road you're on. The way she talks about anxiety is truly beautiful, too.. I could literally go on and on, but this is a book I'll always come back to. One that deserves to be read and appreciated by everyone.

Go one click this book. Even if rockstar romances aren't your usual go to, trust me, you won't be disappointed.

**I received an ARC of this book and these are my honest opinions **

เป็นเรื่องที่ ‘ไม่มี‘ ทุกอย่างที่คาดหวัง
- tension
- angsty
- emotional roller coaster
- characters development

"Falling in love with Wilder Ashburn will destroy me."

This. Freaking. Book.

Have you ever open your kindle and, within mere pages, felt your soul shift — like something inside you just knows you won’t walk away from this story the same? That something fundamental is being rewritten in the quiet spaces of your heart?

This was that book for me.

First Verse is the first in a duet, and let me just say: I wish I had book two in my hands right now because I need more Wilder and Evangeline immediately.

From the very first chapter, I was undone. The chemistry between them crackled — not just romantic, but magnetic — pulling me into a storm I didn’t want to escape from. It was intoxicating.

They’re messy, raw, imperfect — and I loved them all the more for it. I wanted to scream at them, hold them, shield them, understand them. And somehow, I did. Their pain, their longing, their confusion… it all echoed somewhere deep within me.

Wilder. I don’t even have the words. He’s one of those male leads you need time with — to unravel the fears, desires, and insecurities that shape how he sees the world, and more importantly, himself. He was such a pleasant surprise. Getting to know him on a deeper level made me care for him so much, and I’ll be rooting for him forever. He’s the kind of MMC who becomes completely obsessed with the FMC — and yet forgets that self-love matters too. I cannot wait to see him step into that journey in book two.

Eva. My obsession with this woman deserves scientific study. She owns my heart, entirely. I get her — her insecurities, her beliefs, the reasoning behind her actions. She’s one of those characters who loves with everything she has and still tries to find light in the darkest places. Ugh. I just wanted to hug her so badly.

This book was genuinely one of my favorite reading experiences. I’m so grateful that my path crossed with it.

First Verse was also my first book by L.M. Halloran, and I’m now obsessed with how addictive and lyrical her writing is. There’s something so poetic, so intense about her storytelling — it adds this beautiful, distinctive flavor to the whole experience.

Some books don’t just stay with us — they become part of us. Because of the flaws they expose, the truths they whisper, and the way their characters speak straight to our souls.

First Verse was one of those rare books.
And I’ll never forget it.

1.5 ⭐️ Going into First Verse, I had high hopes. With comparisons to The Words by A. Jade and Drive by Kate Stewart, two books that sit proudly at the top of my favorites list, I was expecting an emotional rollercoaster filled with angst, tension, and heart-wrenching slow-burn romance. Unfortunately, this book fell flat for me.

The story had all the elements that usually hook me instantly: rockstar vibes, childhood friends-to-lovers, “it’s always been you” energy, and a friends-to-lovers progression. On paper, it should have been a perfect fit. But in execution, it missed the mark. What I crave in these types of stories is the build-up, the tension, the emotional push and pull, the angst that makes every small moment feel significant. First Verse didn’t deliver on any of that.

Instead, it leaned heavily on spice scenes that, frankly, I found myself skimming through. Not because I dislike spice, but because without the emotional depth and connection leading up to them, they felt empty and gratuitous. The emotional stakes were never truly there for me, which made the entire relationship feel surface-level despite its “deep” history.

I don’t know if the issue was the book itself or if my taste in books has evolved, but either way, this one didn’t resonate. It lacked the emotional intensity and depth that made The Words and Drive so unforgettable. I wanted to feel something - longing, heartbreak, anticipation, but instead, I felt detached.

Disappointing, to say the least.

🌶️🌶️🌶️

First Verse is the first book in the Perfect Song Duet, and it ends on an emotional cliffhanger, so be prepared. This was my first book from L.M. Halloran, and it hooked me from the start. I am not the biggest fan of rockstar romances, but I loved how emotional this story was.

Wilder and Eva have been best friends their whole life, but they started falling in love in their teen years. However, they made a pact to never cross those lines. They wrote music together and they were very dependent on each other so Eva decided to leave his band because she wanted more. They have not communicated for the last few years, and now Wilder is ready to go after her. The years apart were devastating to him, and he knows how important Eva is to him. Unfortunately, he is also struggling with mental health and addiction.

I really appreciated how the book dealt with mental health and addiction. The author handled this with responsibility, and it felt authentic.

Wilder and Eva had amazing chemistry, and I could just feel the love they had for each other. They were a beautiful and heartbreaking mess, but I loved them.

FAN. FREAKING. TASTIC.

First Verse isn’t just the best book I’ve read this year—it’s a story that branded itself onto my heart. It’s rare to find a book that feels this alive. Every page pulses with emotion. Every scene aches with something just out of reach. L.M. Halloran didn’t just write a romance—she wrote a masterpiece that cuts deep and lingers long after the final page.

Evangeline and Wilder? They don’t fall in love—they collide. From childhood shadows to center-stage spotlights, their connection is inevitable, explosive, and impossibly tender—even as it’s tragic and toxic. Their love feels like destiny, but it’s wrapped in addiction, obsession, and years of emotional landmines. It’s one of the most complex, haunting, and deeply intimate love stories I’ve ever read. And the few others on that very short list? They were also written by Halloran.

Eva is stunning. Not just in talent or beauty, but in quiet strength. She breaks, but never bends. Her emotional journey—through grief, loyalty, heartbreak, and survival—is art. I saw myself in her. Her hope, her resilience, her knowing that love isn’t supposed to fix everything, but still clinging to it anyway... it hit me hard.

And Wilder? Oh, Wilder. He is chaos in a leather jacket. A poet with a fuse in his chest. You’ll want to shake him, hate him, save him—and in the same breath, ache for him. Halloran writes addiction with brutal honesty. There’s no glorification, no soft edges. It’s messy, painful, and devastatingly real. And yet, you can’t stop loving him—even when he’s on the verge of losing everything.

The chemistry is volcanic, yes—but the emotional intimacy is what undid me. Eva and Wilder don’t just love each other—they see each other, even in the darkness. Maybe because of the darkness. Their music becomes a language of survival. Their love, a beautiful kind of ruin.

The writing? Halloran’s prose is lyrical, poetic, and razor-sharp. It doesn’t just tell a story—it sings. There’s a rhythm in every line, a heartbeat in every paragraph. I highlighted entire chapters. I reread passages just to feel them again. This book is layered with meaning, and not a single word is wasted.

And that ending? It destroyed me—in the best, most necessary way. I sat there wrecked, reverent, and undeniably certain I’d just read something unforgettable. First Verse is the kind of book that redefines what it means to feel through fiction. And this is only half of Eva and Wilder’s story. I’m equally certain Last Chorus will be the crescendo that wrecks me all over again—and I can’t wait.

I’ll say it loud: this is my top read of the year. One of my all-time favorites from L.M. Halloran—and that’s saying something, as she’s long been a one-click author across every medium and platform. If you want a story that devastates and rebuilds you, that doesn’t just tug your heartstrings but sets them on fire—First Verse is your next obsession.

A rockstar romance will always be a favourite of mine, it’s so underrated (in my opinion) The way I’ve been waiting patiently for this book though 🤭 I knew I would love it but DAMN, I’m kinda obsessed. The way that LM Halloran writes always has me in a chokehold and this one was no different.

I was hooked from the prologue, and quite honestly didn’t want to put this down. Eva and Wilders story is messy, beautiful and full of emotions that had me getting all those angsty vibes I just love in a read.

The anxiety + addiction rep was written so well. It was real, raw and heartbreaking to read how the MMC struggles with the darkness inside him, that he tries so hard to escape.

“𝙄 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙀𝙫𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙣’𝙩 𝙛𝙞𝙭 𝙢𝙚. 𝘽𝙪𝙩 𝙨𝙝𝙚’𝙨 𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙢𝙮 𝙛𝙖𝙫𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙚 𝙝𝙞𝙜𝙝.”

There’s always something about that tortured MMC that gets me and Wilder was no different, kinda wanted to hate him at times but also love him 🥺

First Verse is book one in a duet and let me tell you, I need book two IMMEDIATELY after that cliffhanger 😭

Wow, that was tension, angst, spice, and rockstar drama done right! Wilder and Evangeline had sizzling chemistry, a broken past, and a rocky, passion-filled present…but what will the future hold? Wilder always called Evangeline his muse, but will the rockstar lifestyle bring them closer together or drive them apart? Is their passion for one another enough heal their haunting past? Secrets. Lies. Mental Health issues. Broken trust. Hate. Love. Conditions. This book held every note for a perfect song. I can’t wait for the rest of their story because it definitely isn’t over yet. Oh, and he’s pierced. 😏🍆✨

Austin Stone and Isabelle Ruther absolutely nailed this duet audiobook performance! The raw emotion was spectacular. A SOBBING Wilder (Austin) tore my heart to shreds. But seriously, they both did amazingly! LM Halloran couldn’t have picked a better duo than Isabelle and Austin for these roles. The audio definitely heightened the experience for me. 1000% recommend.

I loved this book! The emotion, the tension, the timeline—it all hit exactly how I hoped it would. First Verse is the kind of angsty, heart-squeezing story that pulls you in and keeps you tangled in its chords.

Wilder and Eva’s connection feels timeless and raw, beginning with childhood innocence and evolving into something intense and complicated. Their shared love for music is the heartbeat of the story, and you can feel every note. The “we promised we’d never fall in love” trope gets taken to new heights here, and the fallout is as beautiful as it is brutal.

Isabelle Ruther and Austin Stone did a fantastic job bringing both characters to life. Each POV felt authentic and emotionally charged. You could hear the pain, longing, and tenderness in every word.

L.M. Halloran poured her heart into this one and I can’t stop thinking about how much it truly impacted me and became invested in what would happen to Wilder and Eva (Evangeline).

What struck me was the realistic way that Ms. Halloran portrayed the aspects of mental health and the emotional states of the characters. Their chemistry was electric, but their relationship riddled with complexity. Internal struggles that led to doubts, fears, anxiety and addiction.

One of my favorites so far this year! I can’t wait for Last Chorus to complete this phenomenal story.

Not for meeee. No chemistry bt the characters at allll. So lust driven. And wilder calling Eva “fairy” actually made me want to crawl out of my skin and die (second hand embarrassment)

Ahhh!! I was SO keen to read this as soon as it was released and it did not disappoint! I loved the Breaking Giants duet and though I didn’t realise it was Gen 2 before reading it, I was so happy for it 🩷

Eva and Wilder grew up together as children of 2 breaking giants rockstars and they have always had the influence of music. They begin writing songs and start a band in their teens before mixed feelings and coming of age divides them. Eva has always loved Wilder, while Wilder has always struggled with his inner demons.
They reunite 6 years later, when Eva is on the cusp of making a fresh name for herself in the music industry. They realise their feelings for one another, yet Wilders inner struggles drive them apart everytime.

OMFG! The angst! And the ending!! I am going to be hanging out so badly for the 2nd book coming out in a month to know what happens between them next!

Childhood best friends to enemies to lovers. Rock star romance. Low angst and way too little drama for my taste. I was a bit disappointed tbh.

The connections between Wilder and Eva was palpable and in the spicy scenes they were very connected and obviously had this unbearable bond between them but the over all story was kinda like reading a YA, for me personally

This deals with addiction, fame, mental health and young love. Complicated feelings and also very simple ones. It’s all uphill until it’s not.

But I’m on to book two where they are 7 years older so hopefully I can relate more to the grown up versions of them.
