300 years under the Spanish colony. 100 years since the U.S invasion. But there was a time my little island, known then as Borikén, was home to a peaceful community called Taínos. The true owners of our land, long gone now but never forgotten. My heart hurts reading this.
This book gives a light overview of the history of Puerto Rico. It’s definitely not in depth, and it glosses over some aspects, but it is eminently readable. Like all of the Captivating History books that I’ve read so far, it’s clear, concise, and easy to read. The book is not for historians or history buffs who have already read about Puerto Rican history, but I learned a good deal from it. For example, I didn’t know about the influence of Ponce de Leon. For someone like me who doesn’t have a lot of knowledge about the subject, this book is definitely worth the read.

Very good book for a general understanding of Puerto Rico’s rich history. I wish they spent more time on the Great Migration in the 1950s exploring how aviation probably made this migration even possible and maybe exploring the living conditions in the barrio a bit more. I did really enjoy all of the information regarding the combination of religious influences from the African, taínos and European peoples creating a cultural fusion still practiced today even on the mainland diaspora communities. I’d recommend to anyone first learning about the history of PR for a quick read!
I liked this guide - it helped give me a better understanding of Puerto Rico that I lacked. I liked learning of the original peoples that inhabited the island before imperial conquest. It was interesting to read about the many attempts Puerto Rico has made for independence and recognition of fairness and equality, from a Spanish colony to an American territory, an area of history frequently brushed aside.
This book provides some fascinating information about Puerto Rico that spans the wealth of the country from the Tainos, Spanish Conquest, American Invasion up to how it has evolved to modern times. I learned some great tidbits about the country and the people. It is well written and makes for a great reference to have on hand.
