Summary: Dr. Casares and the American Academy of Pediatrics conjure with every ounce of professionalism that can be mustered. "My One-of-a-kind-body" is a one- or two-day read that follows five young people as they come to grips with bodies and minds that are changing rapidly. With big changes come bigger questions. "Am I too big?" "Does everyone else sweat like I do?" "Will my disability hold me back?" "What if I am the only one who does things differently?" Kids are going to ask these questions, it's what they do, and all of us (kids & parents) want to be sure we are receiving and giving the right answers. Dr. Casares removes a lot of the trial and error with a beautifully illustrated, quick read with safe, inclusive language and journal-style panels that allow young folks to see, hear, and feel the information being imparted on them.
The Genre: The author had to climb two mountains in the writing of this book. Non-Fiction and Children's Health lay firmly in the domains of no-nonsense critics and parents, but cover to cover live up to the demands.
The Characters: Moving through the pages, we meet: Greta, Juan, Natalia, Hayley, and Troy. Very real, very diverse kids with growing up as the thread that binds them together as each learns to develop positive habits and mindsets for each new bodily development.
The Plot/Theme: "Unity through diversity" is the beat that drives this book forward. Diverse people, bodies, homelife, and community expectations underpin the acts in each chapter.
The Pace: Easy-to-understand concepts, fun illustrations, and reader feedback keep the audience engaged and wanting more.
The Prose: Dr. Casares & Co. provide sections of easy reading for a self-paced experience that kids can digest without feeling patronized.
The Impact: As our communities struggle with acceptance and DEI, this book is a timely resource for kids and parents. READ IT WITH THEM!
The Recommendation: I think every school, library, and household should have copies of this book. Love and Acceptance are good, but thoughtfully communicated, professionally endorsed. Love and Acceptance cannot be argued with.
Pros: Beautiful transitions, illustrations, and glossary.
Such a fun and useful book! Really fills a need for body-positive guides for kids who are right in that age range where they’re ready to learn some more complicated and medically accurate information about how bodies work and also will benefit from a message of loving their bodies, and respecting other people’s bodies, imperfections and all. As a physician, I’ll be recommending this book often and know that it’s going to help a lot of people, especially to counter the too-pervasive messages that kids can get from our wider culture these days about having to look a certain way. Highly recommend!
This is a wonderful book on promoting body positivity! My only gripe keeping this from five stars is that I would have paired this up with a parent tracker/journal. Then when the child is finished with the book, the adults can see how far or near to the mark they are with understanding how their charges see themselves in the mirror. Otherwise a great read for parents and kids!
