Two years ago, Jamie Mainwaring and Remy Remington had nothing in common except missing boys and a blazing hot mutual distraction. When the case was over, so were they. Although they went their separate ways, life—and death—keep the men connected.

This series set off an overwhelming assault on my emotions. I found it incredible, the entire series was because each book had it's completely different set of quirks, which really kept it interesting.

So for lovers of deep undercover Police work that's quite nasty, especially in book 1 which had me a nervous wreck from anxiety, through to the other twists and turns that continue on until the finale in book 4 which I also found rather dark. I found book two quite funny even though terrible things happen, and book 3 left me a sobbing mess. I think each reader will get a something different personally from each book.

You get one hell of a rough ride but with such amazing amounts of romantic tenderness thrown in too. Mind you there are a few Trigger Warnings throughout the series but especially this final book.

I found the writing exceptional due to the way Laura Harner told this story. It was almost aloof, for a better word. Leaving out clues and not having solid direction keeps you on edge, thinking about horrible scenario's about to play out on her AMAZING MC's. I loved the fact that there is no little hints you can pick up on early and go, I saw that coming. You're flying blind in all 4 books.

It made you think or rather made your mind race with hideous ideas of what was to come. The storylines and sub-plots were masterfully conceived and left you reaching for the jesus bar because you had no idea where things were going. It's like you brace yourself as you're about to take a right hand turn, but are slammed into a vicious left with a loop thrown in.

Mind you it's not like this constantly throughout the entire series but when Laura Harner decides to slam the brakes on, only to find they don't work whilst travelling at a high speed, it's not a great idea to read before bed.

To do something like a series you must begin as you intend to go on, and that is exactly what Laura Harner has done with Separate Ways. In the last book of the series she ties up all of the loose threads and gives us a rollicking good time, with angst, thrills, chills, and plenty of twists and turns. Did you know there was a whole community right under your feet as you stroll down the Strip in Las Vegas? That and many other surprises are in this story.
You really don't know how this is going to turn out until you get to the end and then you think, well of course, it couldn't end any other way. Not everyone lives to the end of the series or this story. But there is an HEA for someone that is very satisfying. My only regret is it is over. I have a serious book hangover that makes it difficult to start another book. Maybe I'll take a break and watch some TV... Nah. Too many good books on my Kindle begging for attention. See you on down the bookshelf.

Wow. What an emotional roller coaster ride this series has been. Enjoyed nearly every minute. 5 stars and 5 ♥♥♥♥♥

After what happened in the previous book, and the fact that some of us were practically ready to commit murder at the ending (not pointing the finger in anyone's direction **coughs** JR), it feels as though it's been a long old wait for this, the final book in the series BUT I know it hasn't really, Ms Harner has had the new Pulp Friction series to keep her busy, and other stuff waiting in the wings no doubt.

I'm not going into great detail for this one, it's your loss if you haven't read the 3 stories so far (and if not, why the hell not??), but suffice it to say that the Child Prostitution ring of the first book rears its ugly head again, and the Saudi Arabian Ministry of the Interior has a helluva problem with one of its junior officials, who seems to think it's perfectly OK to severely beat and sexually abuse vulnerable young men. Tobes, who is under the mistaken assumption that Remy slept with Jamie after Mig's funeral, has a huge row with Remy and storms off. Once Remy sleeps off his 3 day hangover, he starts to track Tobes down and it would appear that Las Vegas is the destination. Who else turns up in Las Vegas, what happens to the sleazy abusive Saudi Arabian, and how all the ends are neatly wrapped up in this story, is for you to discover.

My favourite lines "Would forever work for you??". [Turned into a puddle of goo several times when that line appeared, and again, only readers of all the stories will get the significance of it.]... AND

Family had nothing to do with the sperm and egg or how you were raised. It was about who had your back - even when you were an ass. It was all about who you couldn't stand to lose - who you couldn't watch walk away without shattering into a million pieces. The quality of love could be measured in the pain of the loss - or the effort it took to maintain. That was what he needed to tell Toby. And Jamie.

Many thanks Laura for introducing us to Remy and Jamie and allowing us to fall in love with them. I would also second Sam's comment about a spin-off for Toby...and if possible a little catch up with one of my favourite couples??

This is the fourth and final book of the series and what an explosive ending. After the road that led these men here, you would think they'd be entitled to a little downtime, but nope. Laura makes them earn every bit of the finale with blood, sweat, and more than a few tears.

She also pays homage to my favorite character (for those who haven't read the series, I won't say anything to spoil it for you) in the most beautiful of ways.

Thank you for this story, Laura. And for letting me come along for the ride.

"When their gazes locked, Remy's chin raised and his lips parted slightly. In that moment, Jamie saw a man whose world had completely unraveled, who needed comfort, a friend, someone to help him through the loss of his one true love. God forgive me, but I can't be that man and survive with my heart intact. Then Remy mouthed the words guaranteed to haunt Jamie for the rest of his life.
'Please don't go.’”

I honestly wasn't so sure I would survive the end of the previous book. This 'Separate Ways' series has been everything I could've ever hoped for, and then more. At the end of book one I was stunned to see Remy walk away from Jamie. At the end of book two, my jaw was hanging open watching Remy and Miggy together, and Jamie walking away. And, at the end of book three, I was in tears with Miggy's death and Remy's world collapsing, and Jamie leaving. Frankly, I was afraid to read this fourth and final book. I had no clear idea whether the author was going to let these two men have their happy ever after or if it was all going to end up with my head in a box of tissues. I love you, Laura Harner, but you've gutted me with this series.

Remy is alone. Toby disappeared only telling Remy he'd be back sometime. Jamie has gotten tagged by Interpol again to help in a case of a sadistic lowly Saudi Arabian prince beating his stable of young boys to death in Las Vegas. Turns out Toby went to Las Vegas to try to find his friend Pepper. So, when Remy uses his investigator software to track down Toby, he's mighty surprised to find both him and Jamie in Sin City. Of course, Remy heads off to find Toby and bring him home, and figure out what Jamie is up to.

Jamie and Remy have a lot of talking they need to do. There are a lot of hurt feelings, miscommunications, guilt, anger, and love that they need to resolve if they're ever going to get to a place where they'll both be happy. While they're dealing with each other and a potential for a future, they're trying to find Toby and Pepper, since Pepper has been identified as being with the psychotic prince. Easier said than done since Toby's pride won't let him call Remy and, instead, he falls back on what he knows how to do to make money. Oh, Toby.

I'm speechless. Literally. I can't believe what happened. I couldn't, in a million years, have seen how the author took this series and ended it. I loved it.

I went into this book still mourning Miggy, but also hopeful for Remy and Jamie. And now Toby has gotten mixed up in some rather unsavory things while trying to help his friend Pepper. Wow, what a wild ride this was. We truly come full circle here.

When this series started, neither Remy nor Jamie was fit for a relationship. They both had some stuff to work out and Remy needed to learn how to not run away. They have come so far and they finally get their HEA. But, boy do they have to work for it!

I am smiling.

3.75*

This book was a culmination of everything that had been happening since book one in the emotional department, and all the bows were tied, the Ts crossed and all that.
My lack of more enthusiasm comes from the fact that I got to like a secondary character a lot for 2 whole books, therefore, the me that wanted the MCs to get their HEA in book 1 wasn’t the same at the end of book 3 *shrugs*
But it was overall a good series to read.-

I gave this book four stars after my first read-through but after having re-read it, I think three stars is a more fitting rating to encompass how I feel about this book.

This book picks up immediately where Moving Mountains ends which is crucial because Moving Mountains ends on a hell of a cliffhanger and I in fact started reading this book right after finishing Moving Mountains because I had to know what Jamie's response to Remy's unexpected plea would be.

For the most part, I enjoyed the book. It had the difficult task of finally getting Jamie and Remy together after everything they have been through and I loved how these two tackle that particular situation. I loved how hesitant and sweet it all was and I loved that these two really took the time to acknowledge and work out everything that has happened since they met. The whole coming together was perfect and just seeing Remy put his heart out there was the best part of this book.

The plot tied in pretty well with the story, it felt like coming full circle in a lot of ways with Pepper and Toby in trouble. I really sympathise with Toby. He makes a lot of bad choices but I understand where he's coming for and it's almost worth it to see him reconcile with Remy. From my earlier review of the book, I just discovered that I felt very differently about Pepper the first time around, I was less sympathetic to Pepper this time around. It was kind of obvious this time around that Toby was hanging on to a version of Pepper that no longer existed.

I truly feel that there is just a whole lot of bad things happening in this book which considering that the last three books roughly cover a span of about three months means that there is a little too much that these characters have suffered through and they really deserved to catch a break in this book.

The ending of this book drags a lot, there is a lot of unnecessary drama happening that was really not needed. I also feel like the ending would have been a whole lot better if it were simpler. I feel like this book was actually pretty good but that ending left a lot to be desired.

In conclusion, all I want to say is that I really liked reading about Jamie and Remy and the fact is they stayed with me even after seven years.

Thoughts After the First Read
This series has been a roller coaster of will they or won't they?
In Continental Divide, we met Remy and Jamie and we fall in love with them. One thing that they definitely have is chemistry, it practically oozes out of the pages of the book. But they don't make it and they go their separate ways.

Then an ocean cruise happens...
A secret is revealed.
Jamie's mother dies.
Miggy dies.
And Jamie and Remy separate again...

This book starts off right where Moving Mountains left off. And for that I am eternally grateful, I personally couldn't have waited another moment before seeing them together again. And Laura Harner manages to pull off their romance without it feeling too rushed or too much like a means to an end.

As Miggy remarks there is an air of 'What If' surrounding Jamie and Remy. And in this book they finally tackle that question and decide that they want to try for forever. At the end of the first book, I had no idea why either of them didn't want a relationship but after meeting these two in this book I realise how much these two have grown as people, I mean I always thought Jamie was the sensible one but this time we see Remy being the sensible one, talking about his feelings and fighting for their together.

Near the end, there was a touch and go moment that really threw me for a spin but I am glad it got settled.

This book also focuses on Toby and the interactions between Jamie, Remy and Toby really emphasize the journey these three characters have undertaken since the first book.

This book was awesome all around and this series was a journey well worth the time.

It is done. Are you OK? I’m not OK.

I started book 4 with hope. I was heading out the door to visit family when I finished book 3, and just wanted a quick peak at what book 4 had in store. It was a terrible idea for my emotional state.

My messages to Kristen were as follows: “As every book, it (book 3) ends with Remy taking Jamie to the airport to leave. Then after Jamie goes through security he looks back and Remy mouths ‘Please don't go’. Book ends. So I'm all omg this is it Jamie stays and we’re all happy. But NO. Fourth book starts. [redacted for spoilers] And I cursed the heavens! Fell to my knees. Sobbed to the gods of love and novels. Died a million deaths.”

I then went to visit my in-laws, play with my nieces, and feel some emotion other than pain.

This book starts off with everyone making mistakes. Literally everyone. And then finally, finally, Remy pulls himself together and sets out to make things right.

Everyone heads to Las Vegas. Toby to find his friend Pepper. You remember Pepper? He was also trafficked back in the day. Oh god, poor Pepper. ☹ Jamie to deal with diplomats. Remy to find Toby and Jamie.

After everything that has happened, Jamie is not OK. Remy is so sorry.

Toby is making poor choices.

Celine Dion is singing “My Heart Will Go On”.

We revisit old memories, start to heal, experience more tragedy, and deal with the fallout.

My messages to Kristen (includes a very light spoiler): “Book series is done. It's been a journey, a rollercoaster of pain and joy, love and loss. My heart has been shattered into a million pieces, but as of the end of the final book, a soothing balm has settled over my soul and I feel complete. I am whole. Holy sh** balls this woman can write. I think I'm ruined for other books. I literally don't know what to do with myself right now. I think I need a long vacation to think about my feelings. I just considered reading more of her books but I swear to God I will die and cannot emotionally handle reading any more of her series. If I ever seem like I might read her work ever again, stage an intervention. What am I doing with my life? Why do I even exist? I AM A WRECK. I HAVE SO MANY FEELINGS. They're together forever. And I am a broken mess. Like they're fine. It's all good. BUT I'M NOT FINE.”

I looked back through my messages with Kristen to write these reviews (obviously), and like clockwork every 2 months or so for over two years I have randomly messaged her things such as “I wonder if Jamie and Remy are OK?” or “God Jamie and Remy went through so much” or “I’m worried about Jamie and Remy”.

It’s true. I have never read another book by this author again. This book series was too good and too emotional and so freaking much. I’m not sure that’s really what she was going for, but after 2 and a half years, I think I might be ready. I’m going to try Altered States and see what happens. I read the prequel and it was good. Stay tuned.

This book...this book was just so damned perfect for me. It took me on the most incredibly emotional roller coaster ride. I cried tears of heartache for Toby, for Pepper, for Remy and Jamie, Jamie's brother and his wife. There was frustration and rage, joy and sorrow. I wanted it to end and never end at the same time because part of me was afraid of what the ending would bring for these two men.

Remy and Jamie's lives have intersected time and time again throughout this incredible series and always the end has been the same for one reason or another one of them has left the other behind. Something that neither of them has truly wanted. So this time around I was determined to be prepared for that to happen. I truly spent most of this book curled up in a comfy chair, box of kleenex handy, teddy bear gripped tightly to me (or puppy when he was in need of some attention).

Remy keeps telling us that he doesn't know how to do the relationship thing, to talk feelings and yet in the middle of this story he gives Jamie the one question that resonates through to the very end, "Would forever work for you?"

I didn't expect that a story could be more heartbreaking than Moving Mountains had been, if you haven't read it you may not want to peek at this spoiler, I was so very wrong, but there were also some very happy and hopeful moments.

While the ending of this book feels like it is also the end of the series, I felt I had been left with something that was so wonderfully right and complete but at the same Ms Harner has left a window of opportunity open just in case Remy & Jamie decide to whisper in her ear again.

At the end of it all Moving Mountains and Prevailing Winds were definitely two of my favourite reads this year. The only reason I haven't included Continental Divide and Oceans Apart in this list is because I didn't read them this year.

'Separate Ways' was definitely a series worth getting my box of tissue, favourite bear and curling up with.

5 star review by Amber

This has been such bittersweet ride but the ending was so incredibly worth it. This final chapter starts right where book 3 ended. Remy is torn between being upset that Jamie left and dealing with the grief of losing Miggy. On top of that Toby leaves in a fit of temper under the misassumption that Remy defiled Miggy’s memory by jumping into bed with Jamie the night of his funeral.

Remy reeling from the fight with Toby and Jamie leaving; buries his sorrow in massive amounts of alcohol. When he comes to, after 3 days, he decides to go after Toby who is in Las Vegas, which also happens to be where Jamie is doing his own investigation.

Throughout the mystery of looking for Toby, Jamie and Remy build on their attraction that has been growing for a couple years now. There’s still a lot of fear between the two because of their past but you can see they’re at a stage in their lives where they feel willing to try to make it work out.

They do end up tracking down Toby after they decide to make a go at their relationship. Due to unfortunate and tragic events they are separated yet again. When they part, however, it does feel different. Like maybe they will come back together and they will get their forever.

What I love most about this series was that no matter how much distance was between Remy and Jaime, when they came together, that love and connection was still as strong and intense as it was in book 1.

Something that was uniquely different in this book was the incredible emotion Jamie and Remy let themselves feel and show to one another. The soft kisses, sweet touches, loving words were just as meaningful as the slamming against the wall intense make out sessions.

It was so incredibly amazing to see these two finally get their HEA. Great read…highly recommend to those who are truly invested in Jamie and Remy’s happiness.

4.5 forever stars for the whole series

Before talking about this book, I wanna say something about a particular topic.
I learned about the whole Laura Harner plagiarism issue only a few days ago, when I read a review about book 3 in this series, just after I've finished reading it.
It was a huge issue, I can say it. Very bad. And very sad.
As I know, the book in this series are not involved in the plagiarism. So, I had already read 3 books, and what was left was the last book.
I read it. I had to.
But this is my last read of a book written by Ms Harner, that's for sure.

Now I wanna talk about this book, with objectivity.
I really liked it. It was like after 3 books of preliminaries, now we get the big love scene.
Everything was said, between Jamie and Remy. Everything falled into place.
This is one of the most believable love story I've read in my M/M romances, because it shows that love isn't always enough.
If you're not ready, love is not enough. But if it's true love, you'll find your way back, sooner or later.
This book is not perfect, don't get me wrong. For example, I didn't like the fact that when Ms Harner doesn't know what to do with a character, she decides to kill him
In book 3 it happened with Miggy, and now with another character.
It's too easy, don't you think?
Anyway, I really liked the whole series.
And that's why I'm angry with Ms Harner. This series is her original work, and it's good.
So why, for God's sake, she felt the need to plagiarize other authors' work?
It's not like she hasn't a talent as a writer, so I don't understand.
Well, i suppose we'll never know.
Goodbye Remy and Jamie, it was a pleasure to meet you.
And goodbye Ms Harner. I would like to say it was a pleasure, but I can't.

And a final note for the people that removed me from their Goodreads friends because I "dared" to read and rate Ms Harner books, without warning me about the plagiarism issue:
I can do better without nazi people around me. LOL.

From that review: "rom the moment they connected in London over missing boys, to the betrayals on the ocean cruise and the devastation of the events in Phoenix, the relationship dynamics between these two has been fascinating to watch as the men connected, fled, reconnected, and separated again and again. What has made it so endlessly addicting is that we understood why the separations had to happen, the mental and emotional changes each character had to undergo in order to make a relationship (any relationship) work, and all the obstacles that life and their jobs as well as nationalities placed in their paths. It wasn't just one thing that kept them apart….but a boatload. Harner carefully built up wall after wall between these two wonderful characters. Walls made up of Remy and Jamie's childhood issues and abuse, requirements of their individual jobs, and even personal outlook on long term relationships and ties. Throughout each story we waited for the barriers to start to fall. And they would start breaking down, a few bricks here and there. Only for us to watch the walls firm up again at the end of each story. Frustrating, authentic, and it made great reading."

Finally, we come to the end of Jamie and Remmy's story. As I said in each review, it's very difficult to review them as their own books because the arc of their story itself creates the structure for the books, though each is well written on it's own merits.

Prevailing Winds brings everything back to where it started. After Miggy's death, Remmy and Toby can't seem to right their ship and Toby tries to move forward on his own. A series of missteps places him right back where he started, with his buddy Pepper and engaging in the world's oldest profession to try to protect and support both of them. The harsh realities of young runaways and how they end up trapped in that world are so realistically portrayed in Toby's story that it shatters the heart to read.

When Toby goes missing in Las Vegas, Remmy gets his wake up call and is hot on his heels in Vegas, trying to fix what his grief and miscommunication screwed up. But, it turns out that Toby is in over his head with a man Jamie is already in Vegas to deal with and when Jamie and Remmy end up face to face, they soon realize that they are together again to save a young man. This time, both are in the right place, ready, and tired of running from the one person and the one thing that has consistently gotten them through. But first, they have to protect the only family Remmy has left.

Jamie leaves Remy at the airport, thinking that the two cannot reconcile their relationship. Meanwhile, Toby saw Jamie leave Remy's room after the funeral for Miggs, angered by this, he runs away to Las Vega in search of Pepper. Toby falls back into the old street habits. He begins to realize how good his life was, but thinks he can't go back because Remy will not want him.

Teaming up to find Toby, forces Remy and Jamie to face their feelings for each. Both know they need to stop running away, look at what they have, and decide if it is enough to be together.

I have loved these characters from the beginning. Their relationship has had more twists and turns than a mountain road. But like every road, it had to end. I was happy to find that their road ended in love forever.

"Would forever work for you?" Yes, yes it did. I give it a Vegas strip full of stars.

You get what you need"

4.5 stars--Oh, this is one of my favorite series. I was hooked from the start and waited, not always so patiently, for the next book to come out. The time between books was not short, but I had no trouble remembering these stories from one book to the next. These men, their families and friends have been tucked away in a corner of my heart for a couple years now. They are impossible to forget.

Although there were times I wasn't sure it would happen, I'm thrilled that Jamie and Remy finally got their HEA. In all honesty however, there were a few times when I felt that Prevailing Winds was not quite of the same caliber as the previous three, but there were many more moments in the book that were achingly perfect.

I loved this book and can't say enough about the series as a whole. In truth, I'd love to see more written about Toby--hoping his story is one Harner will share with us in the future, and if Remy and Jamie play cameos, so much the better!

I am so sad this series is over :( I have adored Jamie and Remy right from the very beginning and this was a fitting end to their saga.

I won't dissect it, I refuse to, but I laughed and cried and oh Remy you wonderful man.

This time we were also treated to Toby's POV which only added to my love for these books. Will he get his own story? I hope so at some point (I realise this is the last in this series but you know, a girl can hope right?)

Jamie is and will always be one of my favourite characters and I will miss him and Remy and their adventures.

Recommended if you have read the series and if you haven't why the hell not?!!

Incredible!

I re-read all of the books in this series leading up to release day, so I fell in love with Remy, Jamie, Miggy, and Toby again. I am so happy with this book, it had the same intrigue and suspense as the first three, but this one really spent time with Remy and Jamie, I love their love story, Thanks Laura for another wonderful story, you never fail to make me happy. I'm a Phoenician too, so it's great to read about the Valley.

Well, it was a merry, harrowing tale but I made it. I didn't want to read this one because I was sure Jamie and Remy would not get their happily ever after.

I made myself finish even after Doctor Li tore my heart out.

I heartily recommend this series. You won't get guns blazing action or particularly intriguing mysteries but you will fall in love with Remy, Jamie, Miggy and Toby. You will get emotional, heartbroken, happy laughs, real tears and a great read.

Sadly, I feel I have no other choice than to reduce my ratings for all Laura Harner books. The evidence of plagiarism for some of her books appears incontrovertible and she has even apologized for it. This, for me, taints her entire body of work. I can no longer trust the integrity of any of her writing.

This in no way reflects upon the integrity or quality of any author with whom she collaborated.

Hmm. I wish I'd stopped after the 2nd book. But even with my total dismay at events in the 3rd, I expected to get pulled back into Jamie & Rem's relationship. I didn't. This one just felt rushed and perfunctory. It's strange to me, because even as much as I personally hated the 3rd; it was still gripping and I was never bored. Not so with this one. It just didn't have the emotional charge of the others either good or bad.

This book starts where the last book finished off. Jamie is walking away from are my at the airport again. However, it's not long before their paths cross again.
I am happy to say that the 2 men do get their HEA, thanks goodness as I don't think my heart could have taken another heartbreaking ending.

Finally the series got where I was hoping it would go. Took a long time to get there but they made it. I like the series, my only complaint is that there seems to be so much build up and then the end is so sudden. Almost too simple in this book. It was my happy ending even though it took a lot longer than I had hoped and I can understand why.

Can I just say this series was awesome!

Loved how the MC went through some life changes and weren't always a couple. They had to grow and struggle to be men the men that could completely love each other...

What a brilliant series. Loved all the books. Remy and Jamie *sigh*. I think it's better to see the 4 books as one long novel. I hated the ending in the first 3. Tearful or what. Good story line . Loved it!

OMG!! what a wild ride. This series was soooo good. I laughed, I cried (a lot) and honestly had no idea where this story was going. But it was certainly worth the rids. I can't wait for the audiobook versions.

Words cannot express the love I had for this series! I loved Remy and Jamie so much. While the middle 2 books were hard to read (lots of angst), the journey these 2 men go on is epic and the ending is perfect! Give this series a chance. You won't regret it.

“Would forever work for you?”

Oh my goodness! Finally, Jamie and Remy realize how much they love each other and stop making excuses to be a part. What a fantastic ending to this series but I do hope we get a story for Toby.
