Murder in the Script

Rate this book
Meet Lowan, a telepathic alien working as a private detective in the 1930s!

A movie is being filmed in Milford Falls—and Sonny Herrara will kill to prevent it. The film’s producer tries to hire O’Malley for set security, and Lowan steps in to investigate. Secrets abound among the cast and crew, and the script may solve a six-year-old crime which sent an innocent man to prison—if Sonny’s threats and sabotage don’t stop the production first.

S. E. Grosskopf’s writing is strongly influenced by the old pulp fiction magazines and Golden Age radio dramas of the 1930s-1950s. If you like fast-paced action and mystery with a dash of urban fantasy and quirkiness, then you’ll love these books. This is the ninth book in the series. The books follow chronologically. Reading them in order is recommended.

Murder in the Script is one of my favorite books from the Lowan series. It starts out with a criminal’s threat against a new production company filming a movie in Milford Falls that prompts the movie’s screenwriter to ask O’Malley (Sen) for protection, but it soon spirals into a series of sabotages on set, culminating in a murder. Lowan, with his abilities still compromised by his injuries, works with Marx to investigate who is behind the sabotage, and also brings in his neighbor Jane to help with the movie.

I love how twisty and surprising this mystery is, and I love its characters.

Lowan has to rely more on Marx and the others as his rib injuries limit his physical movements and mind reading capabilities. Despite what he’s going through (even losing color vision), he is still his very kind, patient self. I especially love how he helps Marx. Some of my favorite parts of this book are when Lowan defends Marx after he's accused of breaking a camera, and when Lowan talks to the producer and screenwriter about Marx.

Marx is on forced (and unpaid) leave after what happened in the previous book, so he gets a job working on the production company’s crew while he helps Lowan investigate. Unfortunately for him, his job on set is more dangerous than one would expect, and it is not limited to being a crewmember! I love the scene where Marx stands in for the lead actor, resulting in a very satisfying fight with a criminal to rescue the co-star. I also love how protective Marx is toward Lowan, especially after his injury.

Rita helps Lowan by trying to get her brother to do a news story on the film, and she also gets to deliver good news at the end. I love how supportive she is of Lowan and the others.

Jane reappears with many funny scenes. She humorously continues to drive Lowan crazy, but she’s also very helpful, both in providing medical care to him and others and in helping with the movie in several ways. I love her first appearance on film!

Sen is as dangerous (and big) as ever. I think his scene with a certain tree is very funny.

This story is very well-written with a multi-faceted mystery, a rich historical setting, lovable characters, exciting chases and fight scenes, and a dash of humor.

Murder in the Script is an action-packed mystery with the added bonus of "watching" the movie being played out. Very cleverly written, this latest book in the series keeps you guessing until the end!
