Afoot and Afield: Los Angeles County: A Comprehensive Hiking Guide

Rate this book
Bathed in Pacific breezes and girded on the north by the 10,000-foot Transverse Ranges, the sparsely populated rim of Los Angeles County offers near-wilderness getaways easily accessible to most residents of the metropolis.

Jerry Schad is your knowledgeable and reliable guide for the 192 trips in this book--ranging from gentle family walks in Griffith Park to strenuous treks over the spine of the San Gabriel Mountains. Whether you see solace from the crowds, a cardiovascular workout, or a new perspective of the natural world around you, this book provides all you need to know.

Besides updating all previous hikes, this revised edition includes 17 new trips in the foothills of the Santa Monica and San Gabriel mountains. New icons have been added for routes suitable for mountain biking and allowable for pets.

Go on a hike in LA. LA has lots of nature. It's not all concrete jungle. People actually choose to live here. One of the reasons is they can escape to a variety of natural places.

This book gives very detailed and helpful information that will keep you quite busy trying to explore all of the different trails and wilderness areas in your backyard. Most people only think of beaches, Disneyland, and Universal Studios when they think of LA.

Spring time is especially nice, when everything is green and the skies are clear(er).

There's something for everyone in this book.

I use this book frequently, and have found it to be an invaluable source of hiking knowledge for LA newbies. I wish there were more info on plants and better directions (maybe in graphical form) to trailhead parking. I do like, however, the seasonal/smog hike recommendations.

A bible of adventure awaits within these pages, providing hikers of all levels destinations with a variance of landscape, challenge and beauty. Probably the most dog eared book in my library.
