English title: Today, The Villain Couple is Settling Scores Again
I started this story because of the summary, which sounded hilarious, and I wasn't disappointed. The two main characters cracked me up at times because of how shameless they were in their dedication to saving money. The story was also interesting, as they work together to solve various cases which have a common thread running through them that's related to the ML's past.
The premise of the story is that the FL transmigrates from modern times into a novel as a villainous female supporting character called Jian Huan. When she first arrives in this world, she's completely broke with nothing except the clothes on her body, so she decides to hit up the antagonist of the novel, Shen Jizhi, who she's been betrothed to since childhood due to their families being friendly. In the original story, Shen Jizhi offers her 100,000 spirit stones to break their engagement, so Jian Huan can't wait to collect this money. However, once she meets Shen Jizhi in person, she realizes that the 100,000 spirit stones isn't so easy to get, as the ML is dead broke himself with a pile of debt to pay off on his irresponsible master's behalf. The FL has no choice but to join the line and become the 21st creditor and wait for her turn to collect money XP
I seriously can't get over the ridiculous antics of the FL and ML. There were so many moments that had me cracking up, like when the ML settles for a cup of bitter tea for 1 spirit stone, which is a symbolic item on the menu that no one actually orders, rather than shelling out more money for nicer tea, or when they try to split on the cost of the teleportation array by using an invisibility talisman. I don't think I've ever read a story before where both main characters were equally broke like they are here, so that really adds to the humor.
The story was engaging enough, as the FL and ML solve a number of cases such as finding some kidnapped children and investigating why a merchant family's ships are disappearing. There are traces of demonic activity in each case, and eventually they realize that the demons have secretly been building up their presence in the human world and confront them in a big battle at the end.
Like I mentioned, the real draw of this book for me was the FL and ML's hilarious attempts to save money, so I'm including some examples below so I can reference them again in the future whenever I want a good laugh:
The moment when the FL realizes the ML is dead broke XP
Fifty thousand was the bottom line, absolutely couldn't go lower than fifty thousand!
Shen Jizhi glanced at her and took out a pouch from his robes.
Jian Huan's eyes lit up at the sight, watching him intently.
She knew about this!
The Mustard Seed Pouch that every protagonist in cultivation novels carried, capable of holding countless items.
Shen Jizhi's spirit stones must all be stored inside, and thinking of this made her excited.
But a moment later, Jian Huan fell into a long silence as she stared at the three lonely spirit stones in Shen Jizhi's palm.
He stated the situation with an expressionless face: "This is all I have."
Jian Huan's eyes widened in disbelief: "...You have such a big Mustard Seed Pouch and it only holds three spirit stones?"
Shen Jizhi looked at her strangely: "This isn't a Mustard Seed Pouch."
"..."
Realizing something, Jian Huan asked weakly: "So it's just a regular pouch?"
Shen Jizhi: "Mm."
Jian Huan: "..."

Jian Huan paused: "Why? Why can't you repay me a portion first?"
Shen Jizhi's gaze fell on her as he calmly said: "Because you're twenty-first in line."
"What?" Jian Huan was confused.
What was this about?
"My master still has twenty outstanding debts, and those people found me before you did."
Shen Jizhi explained casually as he picked up the sack and walked out of the shade into the sunlight, heading toward the other end of the bridge.
Seeing him leave, Jian Huan quickly tucked the Mustard Seed Pouch into her clothes and hurried after him, asking curiously: "So how much do those twenty debts add up to?"
Shen Jizhi was silent for a long while: "Just under two million."
Jian Huan: "..."
She couldn't help but worry.
Would her turn ever come in this lifetime?

Jian Huan rolled her eyes slightly and told the waiter: "Just bring what I ordered, and give him a bowl of water if he wants it - he can drink it or not, his choice."
The waiter beamed at Jian Huan: "Very well! I'll take the liberty of bringing this gentleman some water, free of charge - consider it good karma."
Hearing this, Shen Jizhi looked up, his expression softening slightly: "Thank you."
The words "free of charge" had particularly pleased him.
Jian Huan: "..."

when they buy the cheapest spirit tree possible for the Ground Fruit spirit from a friend and they trick the spirit that it's a first-grade tree even though it's half dead XP
So, as long as it was a spirit tree, that was enough.
"A spirit tree?" Jiang Mian blinked, "We have one at home, but it's half-dead. My mother and I can't take care of it. Do you want to buy it? Fifty spirit stones for one."
Jian Huan: "!!!"

Jian Huan smiled warmly, gently addressing the Earth Fruit Spirit, which was sleeping like a fried egg. "Fruit, look quickly, the first-grade spirit tree you wanted has been planted for you."
With a "chirp" sound, two green little ears popped out from the edge of the fried egg.
What? A first-grade spirit tree?!
The Earth Fruit Spirit instantly woke up, jumping around in the air but unable to find it, anxiously asking, "Where? Where is my first-grade spirit tree?"
"Here," Jian Huan pointed to the tree about her height, "right here."
The fried egg stretched out two round lines, focusing its gaze.
The tree... was skinny, with sparse leaves falling off, and its spiritual energy was like that of a dying patient, barely holding on.
Earth Fruit Spirit: "..."
Earth Fruit Spirit: "???"
The Earth Fruit Spirit was greatly shocked, doubting its existence. "You call this a first-grade spirit tree?"
Shen Jizhi crossed his arms and stood by the tree, which was even shorter than him.
He suddenly spoke. "Can't you read?"
Earth Fruit Spirit: "Of course I can read!"
Shen Jizhi nodded, pointing to the paper with his finger. "Then take a good look. How do these four characters read?"
The Earth Fruit Spirit looked at the white paper, where it read:
Tree Name: First-Grade Spirit Tree.
Owner: Jian Huan, Shen Jizhi.

This was a really fun read! There were hardly any places I skimmed and that's saying a lot considering how awful the state of the world is. And especially with a xianxia. Heh every time I'm like "X is not my genre..." welp! Although this was a super great example, and I'm definitely hoping more by the author(s) gets translated soon!
There were blessedly few misunderstandings, though I did [clearly] get super mad at FL at some points - like clearly author was writing her as an asshole just for mess/it didn't even make sense, and just annoyed readers.
Aside from those few blips though, it was SO SWEET.
I do wish we'd seen more relationship *development* - it kinda was like ... man I dunno, sudden thing? Yet... not - they were together a few months [though in the three years they were apart for two...]
The end though - so good. Fun, sweet read. I can see myself re-reading it. Definitely wanted MORE MORE MORE at the end.

Sweet, fun, and hits all the genres I tend to like without bringing the angsty baggage and long fillers. I did feel like some parts were so familiar it made me question if I've read the novel before (probably not) - but I think it's just common tropes but smashed in a way that is fun to read.
