The Broken Road Cafe #2

Brothers in Arms

Rate this book
Betrayed on every front, Dan O’Leary cashed in all his chips and moved from the big city life of Atlanta to small town Blue Ridge, Georgia. While licking his wounds, he never meant to start a new relationship, especially with closeted Chief of Police Nick Oliver.

But now all Dan’s hot buttons are being pushed. One of his employees is being terrorized by seemingly upstanding townspeople. Then worst of all, he’d promised himself he’d never be anyone’s dirty little secret, and when Nick’s fear of being outed causes him to hurt Dan, Dan knows there’re problems in paradise.

With trouble on all sides—a homophobic football coach, an ex lover, and his former best friend—it takes a shot in the dark before he realizes the real danger. It’s time for Dan to figure out who he can trust and close ranks with his brothers in arms.

T.A. Webb

T.A. Webb is the writing name for the Mean Old Bear That Could. He's worked with people living with HIV/AIDS and with children in the foster care system for over twenty years, and took the smaller pay for the chance to make a difference for those who can't help themselves. After hours, he's the proud single papa of two (now three) rescue dogs, was born and raised in Atlanta, where he still lives, and is a pretty darned good country cook.

His sister taught him to read when he was four, and he tore his way through the local library over the next few years. Always wanting more, he snuck a copy of The Exorcist under his parents' house to read when he was eleven and scared the bejesus out of himself. Thus began a love affair with books that skirt the edge, and when he discovered gay literature, he was hooked for life.

5 My Head Is Spinning Stars!

description

I loved The Broken Road Cafe but this was even better! This sequel has more emotion, more action, more suspense, and more sexy! Yay for more of all good things!

To discuss the plot at all would be to spoil on the first book so... get to reading book one and then get to reading this one. Highly recommended!

Oh, and Tom? You better be typing right this second because I need book three yesterday.

I enjoyed this book just as much as the first. Tom Webb just has a gift for pulling you into a story, keeping up the pace and bringing out emotions. This picks up shortly after book 1 and Dan is settling into his new life in Blue Ridge. He is still struggling with his broken relationships with his ex, Abe, and his best friend Gary while he is trying to decide whether to continue exploring things with closeted Officer Yummypants Nick who doesn't seem to have any plans on coming out of the closet for anyone.

Things start off with a very unexpected reveal that throws Dan back onto an emotional rollercoaster. In addition, the harassment of his busboy, Charlie, escalates and the people who should be protecting him are failing miserably or actually encouraging the bullying. Gary is back trying to salvage their friendship, and the women in his life continue their helpful meddling. As if that wasn't enough, the trouble his former law partners have gotten into is worse than Dan expected and continues to pose a threat.

As with every Tom Webb story I've read so far, I laughed and cried and then begged for more. Luckily I now know there are two more planned for the series.

You know the taste test, right?
Pepsi challenge. Blindfolded, served glass #1 and then glass #2.
Can you tell the difference? Could you pick out the winner's choice?
I bet I could win a Webb challenge every time.
There is something about his writing...
it's masculine, it's unforgiving, it's dependable, it's just Webb.

Brothers in Arms is absolutely everything I love about Webb's stories. This is a continuation of Broken Road Cafe, and you will want to read them together. Book one takes you from zero to sixty and spits you out on finish line. It's a hell of a ride. This book rivals the intensity while touching on tender subjects at the same time. I think that's what I love about Webb so much; he's not afraid to take you there.

Dan is trying to start anew. He ditched his suit and tie and donned an apron instead. On a whim, he bought a cafe in a small town. He needed an escape and Blue Ridge was just what he was looking for. He's smitten with a certain sexy Chief of police, but he can't shout his love sonnets from the rooftop because his cop is firmly in the closet. Dan is not a man that hides who he is. He doesn't back away from a fight or turn a blind eye on evils in the world. Dan is a do-er. Falling in love with a firm closet-case does not bode well for Dan. He is also stubborn, tough, and a huge pain in the ass. I still love him though.

Nick makes my knees weak. He is without a doubt Chief Yummypants and I couldn't get enough. He is patient yet fierce. He is hidden yet on the front lines. He is dominant yet submissive. He is flippin' awesome. He hits a crossroads in his life. Tough decisions will have to be made. He faces the prospect of bullets flying every day, but some things in life hold more power than they should.

Drama attacks from every direction. This tale may be short, but I promise you there is no shortage of action. *snicker* Yeah, that kind of action too.
Dan and Nick are both alpha men...they tussle and then they tussle some more, sometimes with their clothes on. Hard-headed (heh) and infuriating at times, they finally admit to the fall, and I drifted to the clouds with them.
But not so fast.
Bullying, homophobes, and hate crimes pull your feet back to the ground.
The pair of not-so-innocent kitty cats are back in full effect. Charity and Patsy are a duo of Jimmy Choo's I would not want to cross. They are WAY over-the-top, but somehow, they pull it off.
Family, love, and loss...grab some tissues.
You're gonna laugh, you're gonna sweat, and then you're gonna sniffle.

*4.5 wonderful-webbtastic stars*

How can one author pack so much feeling into one book? I loved the first one, but this one got to me. There is really nothing better than reading about a flawed hero full of passion and this book has multiple. A LOT happens but it never felt jumbled or contrived. It was heartbreaking one page and completely uplifting the next. The secondary characters are just as integral to the story as Dan and Chief Yummypants (I love that) and I can't wait for book 3. Off to troll the author to see how long I have to wait.

Dammit! Even with all of the aspects of this book that frustrated me, and even with the Calmes-worthy ending (that is NOT a compliment, people), I was still somehow emotionally invested enough to shed a tear or two.

I didn't want to put this down. Absolutely loved it, just as much if not more than the original, and was very happy indeed to discover that there will be at least 2 more stories. 5 stars from me.

After the little bomb that Tom dropped at the start of the story (colour me shocked) concerning a person Dan used to be very friendly with, I was expecting anything to happen...a typical Tom Webb story.

There is a helluva lot going on in this instalment of the Broken Road Cafe series, but to say I was whistling and cheering at one stage is not an understatement, I was really happy for Dan cos what he did took serious cojones, and was definitely merited!! Does Nick come out of that Narnian closet, well...my lips are sealed. The hate campaign against Charlie escalates, and yes, we do discover who is behind it, but that's all I'm saying....read the book people, read the book.

Thank you for this and the PF stories Tom, I know the last 12 months have been particularly hard for you health-wise, and I'm really happy that you feel able to write anything at all for us TA addicts!! {{{Big Hugs}}}

As usual, T.A. Webb left me longing for more.

Dan and Nick are still bringing the heat. :D Emotional roller coaster...but one where the second you step off, you run back to the end of the line to do it all over again. Several characters have both minor and major epiphanies, and then the "who, who, who?" at the end-brilliant.

Definitely feeling the love.

Oh my freaking God! What an ending!

".... he was my brother in arms against the world."

I loved The Broken Road Cafe and I truly thought the follow up couldn’t top that but I was so wrong! Brothers in Arms is even better! It’s suspenseful, action-packed, and a wonderful emotional roller coaster ride. It’s absolutely everything I love about Tom Webb's stories.

The ending… well, the ending crushed me. Tom, how could you? :)

Highly recommended! Can’t wait for the third book of the series...

That ending... Mr. Webber knows how to write an ending.

This book is an emotional roller coaster ride. There is laughter, and sniggers, and at times, a lot of tears. But they were worth it because throughout this book -no matter what was happening- there was a strong core of hope and faith in your fellow man that shone brightly. It's what the old folks used to call "the silver lining" and it's something that this author seems to know well -for every depraved and hateful act committed by prejudice, hate or pure evil, there is someone that counteracts with brave actions of charity, love and acceptance.

And that, my friend, is something worth believing in.

I think I probably enjoyed this novel in the series more than book 1. The writing is just as good as book 1, the characters are the same, just the plot ticked more boxes for me this time round, good exciting boys own stuff, with the gay subplot.
So Nick finally gets his act together after a surprising amount of patience towards Dan, whose behaviour is frankly petulant at times.
Loved it. Definite 5 stars.

the second time around I liked is just as much. the problem is the ending .. which is the reason why it gets only 4 stars. the ending is just .... short and heart-wrenching.
I think they need a third book. and I want to have Abes story (so that he has a chance to really redeem himself) ... maybe with Jake???

I agree by heart with the content and tone of Adrianamae's review. Only I'll add that this is one of the hottest books that Tom has written.

This book is an unforgettable one and the only small flaw that it had, IMO, is that the closeness between Patsy and Gary doesn't have a lot of explanation.

If you already have read T.A. Webb, but you haven't yet read The Broken Road Café Series, what are you waiting for? If you have never read this author then you're missing the complete range of emotions that T.A. Webb's powerful voice is capable to evoke, my god this man can write!

This one didn't meet my expectations. It pussed me off that the women kept meddling in everything, I understand that the author wanted to bring out two strong women but they were so nosy! They wanted to know everything. It was just uncomfortable.

Nick and Dan just kept fighting and apologising, it got old and boring after a while. And why is does everyone want Nick to come out so bad? If they knew Dan and he were dating then just accept it that was bcs I don't see any of them having to come out. It's like he needed approval or something. Pissed me off. But that's probably just me.

The mystery part just flapped out and half of the book was about Nick not coming out. It was not... Charming. And the ending was just so... Not satisfying?

I liked the conversations and word play and the sex was good, really good. Hope u guys enjoy this more than I do!

I was so waiting to read another chapter in this series I forgot how this author rips away my heart. Mr Webb you did it to me again… WARNING.Tissues are needed for this story.
We again find ourselves back with Dan O’Leary who moved fron the Big City of Atlanta GA to the small country town of Blue Ridge GA.

Last we saw him as the new owner of a small house and a quaint country restaurant where he met Mr Yummypants oh sorry Nick Oliver the towns Closeted Chief of Police. The meeting started as an explosion of lust on both sides and now Dan has become Nick’s dirty secret.

Mr Webb takes this story having Dan’s past come to visit with all the danger it presents. His love of people have him also mired in small town bigotry that becomes dangerous as well. He and Nick also have to settle their issues of Nick admitting he is gay and all the hatred that could present.

Tom you had me from page one, the tension of the issues insure to get a rise out of a reader and the hot steamy scenes do even more. Dan and Nick are sizzling. I don’t know how you do it, with writing all the Pulp Friction 2014 stories so timely and now this is another piece of magic…Cannot wait for more.

4.5 stars. This book just hits it right. There is progression in Dan and Nick's relationship and it's not easy. There is real conflict that seems genuine. The people talk and discuss real things, and although sometimes the dialogue is a bit silly, it actually reads like the people would say these things. And it very successfully brings awareness to homophobia and bullying and why being honest and open is important for everyone. And it does all that without being overly preachy or obvious.

I love Tom Webb’s work. I have completely enjoyed everything I have read by him. He usually leaves me pissed off at him at the end of a book because I want more immediately! Brothers In Arms didn’t leave me pissed off, though! It didn’t end with a cliffhanger. Thank you for that, Tom. There is definitely opportunity for one, maybe even two more books in the Broken Road Cafe series, but I’m not sure what he has planned. I was hanging on by a thread, waiting to be left dangling when the story ended. I almost shouted with joy when there was a more traditional ending!

We met Dan O’Leary in the first book in this series. That poor man. Trouble seems to follow him like a shadow. He moved from Atlanta to Blue Ridge, Georgia when his life fell apart in The Broken Road Cafe. The trouble that plagued him and enabled him to meet the super hot macho Chief of Police is still around. And so is his kind and nurturing spirit.

Said Chief of Police, Nick Oliver (my mom always told me not to trust a person with two first names…), thinks he’s way in the closet. He and Dan are neighbors and “Back Door Men” as The Shadows of Knight sang about in the 60s. Don’t let your pervy mind go there. It means they are secret lovers and, they sneak in and out of each other’s houses after dark through the back door so no one sees them. Nick’s family pretty much knows he’s gay, he just hasn’t said it officially yet. His biggest worry about coming out is how his men will treat him at work if he does.

While cleaning up the remains of the mess made in the first book, running his cafe and worrying about the gay teenaged bus boy who is being bullied by the football team, you wouldn’t think Dan would have time for love. Somewhere in all the drama and action and surprises, he and Nick do manage to fall in love. And it was sweet watching them fall.

Dan is kind of open with his feelings and his need to protect the underdog. Nick doesn’t express himself as well and is willing, almost to a fault, to give people the benefit of the doubt. This makes for most of the conflict between the main characters. They aren’t fighting their feelings for each other so much, as is usually the case in M/M romance. Instead, they are actually fighting. They disagree fundamentally on how to handle a bullying situation and the people who may be responsible for it.

The wonder that is Tom Webb’s brain weaves a story around that conflict and the detritus left at the end of book one (including the new fallout from revelations made in this book related to the aforementioned detritus). Got all that? He brings all the threads together to make a great love story and mystery and coming of age sub-plot. The characters were all compelling; even the ones I hated were well written. I rooted like crazy for Dan and Nick to make it to the end intact. Brothers In Arms is another great book from the amazing Tom Webb. A must read!

It always makes me happy to share the company of two characters that I adore. Dan is settling down into his role as owner of the Broken Road Cafe, he's happy, loves all his new friends. His relationship with Nick is blooming even though Nick refuses to come out of the closet.

Things become complicated when Dan's ex turns up, saving his cook's kidnapped children, getting shot in the process. There are several stories in this, but the one that is front and center, is the bullying of a young man named Charlie. Dan gets involved, working to help Charlie, but it sets him at odds with Nick. Nick can't believe that the coach Nick went to school with, is behind the homophobic bullying that Charlie is being subjected to.

The bullying story line is handled extremely well. I know I got up and cheered Dan in several parts of the book. It's all too prevalent in school, and everyday life. Bullying needs to be eradicated for the evil that it is. My emotions were on a roller coaster ride with this story. I give it Nick's closet full of stars. I thank the literary gods that Mr. Webb keeps writing these great stories.

I love this author, and mentioned in my review for book one, The Broken Road Cafethat it was a change that the book didn't make me cry. The same cannot be said for this one, but it was done with Tom's usual style. His writing if heartfelt and beautiful. His stories are not those that you can slowly savour and enjoy. With a TA Webb book, you have to have enough time to read the whole thing in one go, as there is no way that you can stop once you have started.
The story continues on right where part one left off, but the author skillfully added so much more to the overall storyline. There was secrets revealed, more people to fall in love with and the continuing story of Dan and Nick. I couldn't read it fast enough. I can't wait to be able to go back and read both books again.

Really? I go through the whole book so that my heart breaks at the end? This is amazing, everything I've come to expect from this author. I love Dan and Nick to pieces, and I like how there's a LOT more to Nick than you'd expect from his behavior at first.

But Dan..... Lovely, protective Dan who made sure to show his friends and employees how much he appreciates them, Dan is my favorite and will continue to be, no doubt about that.

I really hope there are going to be more books in this series, I need more!

"The thing is, we had the best friendship ever. People would talk how we're always together. But you hurt me so much. I have every reason not to forgive you. But I do. The rest is up to you." ~ Me Skye Hamilton

Dan O'Leary is settling into his new town and enjoying running the restaurant and making lots of new friends. He's still trying to escape his painful past, trusting that things will get better eventually. Everything isn't going as smoothly as he might like, especially his relationship with Nick, the handsome sheriff, but he's trying to have patience with him. In the meanwhile, people from his past invade his present, complicating matters and bringing up bad feelings which Dan had hoped would never raise their ugly heads again. Dan is wondering if his life will ever settle down, but, every day, he's more convinced that moving here from the big city is one of the wisest moves he's ever made.

Dan is a gem; rough cut, perhaps, but with a heart of gold. He can't stay out of becoming involved with someone who needs his help even if he tries; regardless of the confusion it inevitably brings. He's no pushover though. Dan refuses to stay in a situation which is harmful to him, i.e., his relationship with his ex and his ex-best friend both of whom betrayed him, or even with his new love, Nick. Dan is proud of who he is and refuses to settle for less than the respect of which he's worthy. Dan is not above forgiving, but he doesn't soon forget either. Dan is frustrated with Nick and his macho game of playing straight. He despairs that Nick is so worried about people finding out about their relationship, but he also understands Nick’s fear of his townspeople losing respect for him, especially since he's the sheriff and needs their approval. A constant contention between them is their closeted relationship and even though Dan is trying to be patient, he's also trying his best to talk Nick into being honest and coming out. Until Nick comes out, they can't have a future together.

Nick is a good man and a great sheriff, but sometimes he plays his part of straight male too well. Nick almost loses Dan over a conflict over a homophobic man and his treatment of others which, instead of correcting, Nick goes along with. Nick has never had anyone confront him over something like this, because before now, he wasn't involved with anyone else. Now he has Dan to hold him accountable for his words and actions; Dan is quite adamant that Nick be respectful to him and other townspeople. As long as Nick is not being honest, he will never fully gain Dan's respect, or be able to truly respect himself for that matter. Nick has to decide what's truly important; blowing his cover, or keeping Dan's love and respect. This decision also involves deciphering how he feels about himself and Dan. What does he want out of life? Does he want to stay closeted and alone, or to be honest and in a loving relationship? Ultimately, he can't have both; Nick is going to have to make a stand sooner or later.

This is a great sequel, untwisting some knots, tying up others. It gave me more insight into Dan's personality as well as Nick's. The secondary characters were as well thought-out and interesting as the two main ones. I can't help but be drawn and become emotionally involved to these unique and wonderfully flawed people in Tom Webb’s books. Along with the issues of coming out or not, and being honest about your feelings, is that of bullying and forgiveness. Tom has woven them in an entertaining, meaningful, thoughtful story, with viable options to each problem, which is one of Tom's trademarks. I recommend this book to fans of the series and to new people, although I strongly suggest that you read the first book before beginning this one. Thank you, Tom, for giving me another awesome literary experience.

I like the different characters ..in fact the secondary charactors were awesome...I can see where another book could come out in the future... the first book was good but it was the tip of the ice berg and the 2nd book just took off and it was also very good..
.I may have to rewrite this cause I am just going with the my thoughts here
