Sarah McDougal is unapologetic, in life and in love. After years of casual relationships and obsessing over her work, she sets out on a relaxing Bahamian cruise. A disastrous first day takes a turn for the worst when she hears a familiar voice call out. A voice she hadn’t heard in fifteen years and never thought she’d hear again. The voice of the first woman she’d ever loved.
Jackie Taylor has always been a shy introvert. A year has passed since her divorce from her husband, and she’s concocted a mission to break out of that shell and create a life of new experiences. What she didn’t count on was the experience of a new love with someone she never expected to see again, let alone fall for.
A decade and a half after their first kiss during a game of spin the bottle, Jackie and Sarah have the opportunity of a lifetime to ignite more than just a lost friendship.
Sarah and Jackie were best friends at school, but Sarah held a secret crush on Jackie. When in their mid teens their friend group had a party game of spin the bottle. As a result Sarah had to kiss Jackie, which caused Jackie to run off and ended their friendship. Fifteen years later they met up again, after Jackie had divorced her controlling husband. After apologising about their split, Jackie wanted them to be friends once more, but Sarah still had a crush on her, and was finding it difficult. Eventually these two ended up together. This is a gentle and positive story, about love and loss, and with lots about healing. There are also some negative scenes, but the love these two women have comes through well. There are some wonderful scenes about found family, and how the family we choose can help us overcome the hurt others give us. It’s also a spicy story, with some very sexy scenes.
Sarah had a crush on her friend, Jackie when they were 15 years old. One night they end up kissing in a game of spin the bottle. Jackie was in a relationship and out of fear that he would learn about the kiss she stopped talking with Sarah.
Jackie is recovering from a divorce from her high school sweetheart. She has diabetes and PCOS and struggled with fertility. She decides to go on a cruise in an effort to get some rest post divorce. To her surprise she runs into Sarah also trying to rest from work on the cruise. Sarah, the plus sized woman who has always thought about Jackie.
I really loved the way that Lauren writes the fat rep in this book. Jackie is mid-sized and Sarah is plus sized. The way she talked about stretch marks, jiggles and rolls honestly made me so happy. I really appreciated the discussions about PCOS and diabetes.
I enjoyed the story a lot and cannot wait to see where Lauren goes with her writing, as this is a debut novel. Oh, and there is some really good spice in here. One aspect that I wanted a bit more with was the romance to be flushed out a bit more.
I had the pleasure of ARC reading Love at First Spin, and let me tell you—it was absolutely adorable. Also, snaps for the plus-sized and LGBTQIA representation! It was such a breath of fresh air to see characters who felt real, unapologetic, and fully themselves. When you can truly picture the characters as they are, without compromise, it makes the story that much better.
One thing I really loved was how Sarah stood firm on her boundaries. She knew what she needed and wasn’t willing to settle for less—no back and forth, no unnecessary drama. That level of self-respect was so refreshing to see. And Jackie? She completely surprised me with her strength and resilience. Watching her navigate her new normal while still pushing herself out of her shell when it really mattered was such an endearing part of her journey.
This book was sweet, heartfelt, and had just the right amount of depth to keep you invested. If you’re looking for a story with great representation, charming characters, and a romance that makes you smile, I definitely recommend picking this one up!Love at First Spin
I had the absolute pleasure of receiving an ARC of Love at First Spin, and it was such a sweet and delightfully spicy read!
The plot was engaging, and the incredibly diverse cast of characters felt so authentic and relatable. Sarah and her friend group reminded me of people I know in real life, which made the story all the more enjoyable.
I especially loved how confidently Sarah embraced who she was and what she wanted. She never settled, and that self-assuredness was inspiring. On the flip side, Jackie’s journey was just as compelling. Watching her find the courage to explore her identity and live her truth was both touching and empowering. Plus, her parents and sister were such a heartwarming part of the story!
This was an absolutely charming read and one of the most realistic sapphic romances I’ve come across in a while. I’m really excited to see what this author writes next!
I had the immense pleasure of reading an early copy of Love at First Spin and I didn't realize how much I needed a palate cleanser like this! Jackie and Sarah's love story is sweet and heartfelt, and I appreciated this low-angst read.
The representation is also excellent in this book. I haven't read many romances with a T2 diabetic, and I appreciated how the author handled this topic. I can't wait to read more from this author!
