No no no que hdp como vas a escribir así loco? 6 cuentos con una precisión exacta. Manejan una profundidad y extrañeza que te atrapan y te atan a la historia, te convocan y te hacen mirar lo que sea esté pasando. Termino cada cuento tensa, preguntando ¿cómo fue que sucedió? Tratando de encontrar si ¿había algo sobrenatural o solo era psicológico? Un espectáculo.

Samanta es única, la mejor cuentista actual. Sus relatos siempre me dejan pensando una banda de tiempo, me hacen dar vueltas sobre todo lo que leí, lo que entendí, y lo que no llegué a decodificar bien. Su prosa está cargada de simbolismo, y siento que en una primera lectura no siempre se puede desmenuzar todo (o al menos en mi caso). Por eso, siento que es una autora cuya obra siempre es provechoso leer más de una vez. Y seguramente "El buen mal" tendrá su relectura en el momento adecuado. Solo tengo palabras positivas para esta antología, todos los cuentos me encantaron. Sin embargo, tengo mis favoritos, que son "Bienvenida a la comunidad", "Un animal fabuloso" y "El ojo en la garganta".

I keep trying with Schweblin but something about her writing never quite lands for me in the way that Mariana Enríquez and Agustina Bazterrica, for example, do.
The six stories here are all in her trademark 'everyday uncanny' mode and I appreciate the way she finds the weird and uneasy in mundane life, especially in family relationships. There are no Gothic trappings, no obvious hauntings or identifiable monsters here.
The best stories for me are 'A Fabulous Animal' and 'An Eye in the Throat' both of which take family trauma and give it an emotive, visceral twist. But some of the other tales left me unmoved. There are some great ideas such as 'Welcome to the Club' which starts with a woman trying to drown herself, like Virginia Woolf, with stones in her pockets, but that beginning didn't quite come to fruition.
I like what these stories are doing in extending the boundaries of the weird as a literary category but I found the effect uneven. Still, the good stories are very good with a powerful elliptical quality that haunts.

It's been a couple of weeks since I finished this collection of short stories from one of my favorite modern writers, Samanta Schweblin. She once again writes about some macabre and eerie topics in a way that excites and delights. I love how she pathologizes pretty common qualities in people or issues many people face, in order to excavate their deeper, darker truths.
The first 3 stories are good. The final 3 stories are GREAT. Including one of THE best things I think she has ever written. I can't wait for more people to read this when it comes out in August (2025). I can see myself revisiting this in the future, something I don't say about a lot of short story collections.

The horror in Schweblin's six short stories is rooted in the physical and mental perils of human fragility, and while some draw on the supernatural, the hallucinatory, the most effective ones operate with feelings of guilt and loss: Life can change drastically when a loved one is harmed or killed. Granted, this is certainly the worst time in my life to read about suffering animals, but why oh why do the first three stories rely on lazy metaphors of gratuitous animal cruelty - I hate that. Then, we get a very decent story about a son and a father growing apart due to illness, then a drawn out, muddled story about death and alcoholism, and at last a story which gives the expression "anticlimactic" new meaning.
That's not the kind of literature I need in my life.

A Fabulous Animal
A 60+ architect gets a call from her dying friend who wants to talk about her late son; the child wanted to become a horse and, while leaving the world, mysteriously summoned an injured horse which survived while he passed.
William in the Window
Am Argentinian writer travels to Shanghai on a scholarship; she fears her partner at home might die due to ill-health, and when a Korean writer in the same scholarship program talks about the unfortunate demise of her mother, another death occurs. And yet again, an animal is harmed.
The Eye in the Throat
No animal cruelty, yay! A young boy swallows a battery and loses his ability to speak, which destroys his relationship to his guilt-ridden father. The now grown-up child is also the narrator, who creepily can take an omniscient perspective. Also, it's giving "Mr. Harrigan's Phone" from Stephen King's If It Bleeds short story collection.
The Woman from Atlántida
Two sisters are on holiday and escape every night into the house of an alcoholic poet whom they treat like a puppet, until she runs away to the beach and disaster strikes. In a later, intertwined timeline, the younger sister works in a hair salon and regularly washes the alcoholic's hair for free.
A Visit from the Chief
A lonely woman who misses her daughter takes home a senior citizen who fled a retirement home; when the self-proclaimed son of the runaway picks her up and pulls out a gun, well: things happen. Not very interesting things though.

Esto es lo menos Schweblin que he leído.
Oficialmente es la colección relatos de esta autora que menos me gusta, y no porque sean malos o malísimos sino porque no encuentro lo que me enamoró de su escritura. Relatos raros, relatos incómodos, relatos que me perturben un poco ya sea con el accionar de los personajes o del fondo que los rodea. Aquí de eso mucho no hay. En mi percepción, a nivel psicológico me falta esa profundidad.
🐰Bienvenida a la comunidad: es un cuento que habla del dolor, de la depresión, de la salud mental. No hay nada nuevo bajo el sol pero me gusta cierta parte hacia el final donde se habla de la culpabilidad y el cómo la protagonista retuerce todo.
🐎Un animal fabuloso: es un relato trágico de principio a fin pero me parece bello por algo en particular.
🐈⬛William en la ventana: hay michis y amo los gatos. Predecible pero me gusta el toque sobrenatural.
🔋El ojo en la garganta: lo triste que me dejó esta historia. Un cuento sobre la culpabilidad.
🌊La mujer de Atlántida: a mí me gustan los relatos triste con tonos melancólicos y por eso este me encanta.
👤El Superior hace una visita: me gustó pero quizás fue el que menos disfruté, extraño a la Schweblin que me conquistó.

Siempre se plantea nuevos retos S. Schweblin, aquí hace una propuesta distinta a las anteriores: lo paranormal y extraordinario son su sello de identidad en este recopilatorio de relatos. Esto desde luego que es lo mejor del libro, el tono uniforme que consigue aún dentro de la peculiaridad de cada relato. Esa extraña conexión entre lo humano, lo animal, lo real y lo inexplicable, eso creo que es lo más interesante.
Me gustaron más los últimos cuentos, que curiosamente son los más largos, donde tiene más espacio para desarrollar sus ideas. "El ojo en la garganta" me pareció el mejor, y el resto consiguen dejarte en un estado de intranquilidad, como con el paso cambiado.
No lo puntuo más alto porque ando todavía a la espera de encontrarme lo mejor de esta autora, que indudablemente es buena, o una novela larga suya que salga redonda de verdad. Creo que lo logrará, estaremos al acecho.

It is not very often that an epigraph reflects the overall atmosphere and mood of a particular book ideally, but Samanta Schweblin's latest short story collection Good and Evil and Other Stories opening with Silvina Ocampo's words "strange is always truer" is a great example. It is an atmospheric, quite unique, strange work about seemingly everyday situations and people that are just a little bit eerie, but never openly horrifying, yet always slightly terrifying.
Starting the collection, scattered recurring motifs such as water, horses, or rabbits might erroneously lead the reader to assume that Schweblin continued where she left her 2014 novel Distancia de rescate. Expressly the inaugural short story Welcome to the Club opens with a very dreamy, visceral, claustrophobic, but at the same time strangely comforting drowning scene in a lake. The attempt of a woman, a wife and mother of two children, at killing herself. Her striking attempt is followed by a stretch of time in which neither she nor the reader for sure knows whether she survived it or she died of it. Everything feels like between white clouds and cotton balls - muffled, dampened, dreamy (or nightmarish?) and unreal. Until she meets a certain person who went through the exact same thing: her neighbor who tells her that in order to remain in this world, you have to cause pain for the ones you love, everyday.
To readers for whom the concept of pain is a central part of what they read, such as myself, the delight this story provides will be evident and the element of pain creeps through all of the stories in the collection and leaves its trail, be it in the long distance phone call between two old friends who together recollect a sorrow from the past in A Fabulous Animal; or in what a child left unattended for a moment does that determines his whole life, and the parents' anguish over it in An Eye in the Hole; or the healing of a past encounter through help with hair and body care, the alleviation of a painful wound in The Woman from Atlantida.
So far my favorite Schweblin (I hadn't read any short stories by her before), Good and Evil and Other Stories receives my thumbs up, both for its strangely beautiful stories that leave you hanging in a state of uncertainty (but that's fine), and for its charming and skilled author.

Se Silvina Ocampo diz em epígrafe que “o estranho é o mais certo”, quem sou eu para discordar? E não é que continua a resultar?
Samantha Schweblin está menos sangrenta e brutal do que quando a conheci com “Pássaros na Boca”, mas a sua escrita está mais refinada e continua a ser a rainha da inquietação, deixando-me de coração nas mãos em todos os contos, tal é o grau de tensão que consegue instilar em todos eles. São seis contos em que pressentimos que as coisas vão descambar a qualquer instante, pelo que a leitura se torna compulsiva.
A ter de encontrar algo que os una, apontaria para a perda, as relações familiares, a distância, a angústia e as ligações que por vezes estabelecemos incautamente com estranhos que podem assombrar-nos para sempre.

Pousa o auscultador e, apesar de o clique mecânico dar por encerrado o assunto, ele pressente que a coisa não ficará por ali. O silêncio que lhe liga todas as noites fica colado a si ao longo do dia.
A mulher de Atlântida – 5*
- Há uma poeta? – perguntei eu, pois até então nunca tinha ouvido falar de uma poeta que não estivesse morta, e que ainda por cima vivia assim, no meio das outras pessoas, como se nada fosse.
O Superior faz uma visita – 4*
Perguntava a si mesma o que seria tudo isso, ou seja, para que servia toda essa história de ter uma vida. Seria algo que a determinada altura uma pessoa deveria entender? Algo que uma pessoa estava destinada a ver ou que devia fazer?

Pousa o auscultador e, apesar de o clique mecânico dar por encerrado o assunto, ele pressente que a coisa não ficará por ali. O silêncio que lhe liga todas as noites fica colado a si ao longo do dia.
A mulher de Atlântida – 5*
- Há uma poeta? – perguntei eu, pois até então nunca tinha ouvido falar de uma poeta que não estivesse morta, e que ainda por cima vivia assim, no meio das outras pessoas, como se nada fosse.
O Superior faz uma visita – 4*
Perguntava a si mesma o que seria tudo isso, ou seja, para que servia toda essa história de ter uma vida. Seria algo que a determinada altura uma pessoa deveria entender? Algo que uma pessoa estava destinada a ver ou que devia fazer?

“Lo raro siempre es más cierto” escribió Silvina Ocampo y Samanta Schweblin toma esta frase como mascarón de proa. A través de unos pocos cuentos (quisiéramos que fueran más) nos dice que hay algo en lo único, en lo que sucede una vez, en lo que es original; estas situaciones son más verdaderas que lo normativo.
La idea es tratar de romper la gran ficción de la normalidad. Ese objetivo lo logra creando ambientes en donde lo terrorífico, lo sobrenatural, lo raro, se mezcla con los cotidiano. El dominio narrativo es profundo, la tensión es constante y el lector se compenetra con las situaciones. Estamos ahí, al lado de esos personajes solitarios y sufrientes que viven atrapados sin retorno posible.
El nivel de los relatos es alto y parejo. Sobresale, si, “El ojo en la garganta” obra maestra del cuento moderno. A disfrutarlo que falta mucho para otro volumen.

Entre la lectura de la novela breve Distancia de rescate y la de estos seis cuentos perfectos y conmovedores, he podido observar la gran evolución de la autora. Ya había mostrado un gran talento para la narración del horror, y en estos cuentos escritos diez años después, además del talento y capacidad, se puede ver el oficio que da la experiencia, y que no deja hilos sueltos.
Sin recurrir a ningún elemento fantástico, ni siquiera insinuado, logra construir estos seis cuentos, a partir del horror que existe, de manera potencial, latente en la vida cotidiana, con personajes, relaciones y situaciones muy bien construidos, y entrañables.
Todos los cuentos son impecables, atrapantes, sorprendentes, inteligentes. De entre ellos, como favoritos, me inclinaría por El ojo de la garganta (los miedos que aparecen cuando se tiene un hijo); y El Superior hace una visita, (una escalada sorprendente, aunque creible y posible); pero a riesgo de repetirme, todos son excelentes y sin desperdicio.
Leí en estos días que Samanta Schweblin aparecía como precanditata para el Nobel (en las apuestas, que en general, se equivocan). Me parece poco probable: entre otras cosas, porque los cuentos, y en especial los de horror no suelen se material Nobel; y por otra parte, por los equilibrios Nobel: en tres años, ya premiaron a dos mujeres, Han Kang y Annie Ernaux. Pero tampoco haría diferencia.
Un libro perfecto.

Creo que a este punto los que leemos a Schweblin ya sabemos que es una cuentista de la puta madre. Estos seis cuentos no solo lo confirman, sino que reafirman su estética: caballos y liebres, mascotas muertas; el roce de la locura, la cruda realidad en la que alguien encuentra cierto escape paranormal: un ventanal abierto; mujeres intelectuales, sensibles y traumadas; hijos chicos, padres reales, la distancia de rescate que sigue estando ahí, siempre. Me sigue asombrando su capacidad para generar tanta tensión en tan pocas páginas: al principio los cuentos son tan cotidianos y se sienten, de alguna forma, tan reconfortantes que uno quiere quedarse ahí. Pero después vienen las sombras, la inquietud, la caída vertiginosa de una historia que te deja sin aliento: el final desconcertante.
Para mi gusto, los primeros tres cuentos van muy bien de entrada. «Bienvenida a la comunidad» es un buen comienzo, las descripciones son envolventes, es una buena tomada de mano para nuevos
lectores y un reencuentro para quienes ya la conocemos. «Un animal fabuloso» grita Distancia de rescate en sus pocas páginas, pero tiene un sabor más macabro, muy tétrico. «William en la ventana» fue uno de mis preferidos; acá se la nota a la Schweblin más Samanta que nunca. Me encantó el setting (retiro de escritura soñado), los personajes (necesito saber quienes eran esos escritores ficcionalizados) y el detalle del gato William (ojalá verlo en un momento esquizo mirándome así por la ventana).
El peak de esta colección para mí está en «El ojo en la garganta»: THAT IS HOW YOU WRITE A STORY. La historia está narrada por un niño que a los tres años se traga una pila y pierde la capacidad de hablar y respirar, así que le insertan un tubo y como la familia vive en El Bolsón, tienen que atravesar la ruta hasta Buenos Aires bastante seguido durante los años noventa. Quizás porque de chiquito, a la misma edad que el protagonista, tuve complicaciones de salud y, de algún modo extraño, recuerdo cosas por más que parezca imposible. Quizás porque mis viejos se divorciaron en esa época también, justo como pasa en la historia, y, como digo, me acuerdo cosas. O quizás porque me obsesiona la ruta nocturna y las YPFs perdidas y hasta el día de hoy tengo un vínculo fulero con mi viejo. Quizás porque la Schweblin is the motherfucking GOAT of short stories, este relato pasó a ser mi favorito de todos sus relatos. Una MASTERPIECE.
Los últimos dos relatos me parecieron muy bien, a la altura de los primeros, pero no me volaron la cabeza como lo consiguió hacer el del medio. «La Mujer de Atlántida» me sacó un par de sonrisas, se nota la nostalgia y el final fue interesante. Y «El Superior hace una visita» me resultó entretenido y bastante cómico: NUNCA CONFÍEN EN LOS GYMBROS.
Cerré muy contento y conforme esta nueva entrega de cuentos. Creo que la selección es justa, impecable, bien hecha, aplausos. BUT I WANT MORE. Suerte que a fin de mes viene Samanta a Córdoba: NO DEJEN SALIR A SUS MASCOTAS.

Ik ben een versnipperde lezer en luisteraar en kijker, ik val zelden volledig voor een kunstenaar: Rammstein, ja, daarvan vind ik nagenoeg alles goed, maar dan heb je het wel zo’n beetje, en zo zijn er van schrijvers maar weinig waar ik niet alleen alles van heb gelezen, maar ook net zo veel van waardeer.
Samanta Schweblin is er zo een, ik las haar Gif en dat vond ik zó ongrijpbaar spannend dat ik het meteen nog eens las (ik kan maar één andere titel bedenken waarbij ik dat deed), Duizend ogen is een roman waar ik wekelijks aan denk, haar verhalen huren kamers in mijn lezershart, en met Het goede kwaad heeft Schweblin zichzelf absoluut overtroffen.
Wat zij doet met de timing van haar wendingen en informatie verdient eigenlijk al een essay, hoe de lezer in het lugubere en al dan niet bovennatuurlijke wordt getrokken idem, en dan is er nog de psychologie. Dit - dit is schrijven. Dit is de pen slijpen en schrapen, snijden, schaven tot het klopt. En het klopt en het leeft. Alsof ik nog niet lyrisch genoeg ben, hier de uitsmijter: ‘Het oog in de keel’ zou verplichte kost moeten worden voor iedereen die wil schrijven, ik zie bijna niet hoe dit nog overtroffen kan worden (en bedankt voor het stampen op mijn hart trouwens dat was leuk).

Amazing collection, full of unsettling atmosphere, creeping dread and real human emotions. ‘The eye in the throat’ was my favourite one. Usually I struggle with short story collections but this one kept drawing me back in.

I loved Samanta Schweblin’s “Fever Dream,” so I was eager to read some of her stories. While these didn’t change my life or anything, (I wasn’t as enamored this time around as I was with “Fever Dream”), I definitely got the odd and disarming experience I was hoping for. Schweblin seems to write from a place that is not quite grounded in reality, but feels familiar. Her scenarios have an uncanny, dreamlike quality to them while still taking place in every day life. Like a sense of Deja vu that fills you with unease, but you don’t know why.
This is one of those collections where I don’t think I always grasped what exactly the author was saying. I’m not quite on the same wavelength as her, so I think I missed some important things. But the atmosphere was solid, and honestly, that’s what I was here for.
“An Eye in the Throat,” while a bit slow in the middle, is probably one of the saddest stories I’ve ever read. If I had been reading a physical book and not an electronic copy I would have been tempted to throw it. (Not really, but kind of.) I think that was the best story of the bunch.
My second favorite would probably be “A Fabulous Animal,” because I liked how nuanced and bleak it was and I appreciated the ambiguous ending.
I kind of hated that last story. It wasn’t bad, quite the opposite. I just really didn’t like the experience of it. (Probably the point.) I think I’m just not in the right headspace for something like that right now.
I think the thing I appreciate the most about this author though, is that she isn’t afraid to be strange and experimental and she doesn’t explain herself. I’ll definitely continue to read her work.

Son seis relatos. Algunos cuentos me gustaron más o menos y otros me fascinaron. Tres de ellos no creo que me los olvide nunca, eso para mí ya lo hace un gran libro.

Good and Evil and Other Stories is Megan McDowell's translation of El buen mal by Samanta Schweblin, collection of six short stories. This is the fifth collaboration between the pair after the brilliant Fever Dream (shortlisted for the 2017 International Booker), story collection Mouthful of Birds (longlisted for the 2019 International Booker), the sci-fi novel Little Eyes (longlisted for the 2020 International Booker) and most recently a second collection Seven Empty Houses (winner of the 2022 National Book Award for translated literature).
It's striking, given typical delays in translation into English, that this is appearing close to the original Spanish-language publication in March 2025 (the Dutch version seemingly actually appearing earlier), perhaps a testament to the success of Schweblin's work and indeed McDowell's translation.
For me Schweblin is at her best - Fever Dream the exemplar - when the work is pitche in what the literary critic Tzvetan Todorov calls in his The Fantastic: A Structural Approach to a Literary Genre "the fantastic" - indeed I think I may have come across the term when reaching for an exploration of what Fever Dream did so well. Todorov argues that an author can choose between a rational explanation for supernatural events - what Todorov calls "the uncanny" - and a supernatural explanation - what he calls the "marvellous" (and most would call fantasy). Todorov focuses on the difficult to occupy middle ground:
Mouthful of Birds occupied similar territory, but with the emphasis a little less on supernatural elements, and more on strange situations and behaviour, and Seven Empty Houses did away with anything supernatural at all, but uncanny behaviour was one common thread.
This collection, which comes with the epigraph "Strange is Always Truer" from Silvina Ocampo, feels closer to a Mouthful of Birds.
The story "William in the Window", a cat-ghost story involving two authors on a residency in China, each with worries as to the domestic situation they've left behind, comes with the intriguing comment in the author's afterword that the story 'did happen. It is perhaps the most autobiographical story I've written, and perhaps also, for that reason, it's better not to say any more.'
The opening story, Welcome to the Club, is narrated by a woman who tries to drown herself, but to her surprise seems to survive under water. When she returns to her husband and girls, she is unclear if she is still alive, or something other, and the story's title comes from a neighbour who has experienced a similar fate, and tells her that to remain in this word you have to cause pain for your loved ones every day: That will fill you with guilt, and if the guilt is strong enough, you'll need to stay to take care of them ... Do you want to stay on this side of the world? You want to save them from the damage of losing their mother. Which bodes ill for the class pet rabbit the girls have brought home for the week...
An Eye in the Throat is narrated by a boy who when two years old swallows a lithium battery and ends up surviving but with a permanent tracheostomy to breath, and the permanent loss of his voice. His father though is fixated on (or perhaps transfer his guilt to) an event that occured 6 months later, when, on a long drive back from another hospital appointment, they stop at a YPF service station. The father has a hostile encounter with the service station owner, a man named Morris, and, perhaps distracted, he and his wife fail to notice the boy has left the car, and drive off without him (thinking he is asleep under a blanket in the back seat). They drive for an hour before realising and when they return Morris has found the boy and return him to them. But from that day on, the boy loses his vitality, and the father is plagued with silent phone calls on his landline, which he is convinced come from Morris. Twenty years later he returns to the garage to confront Morris, only for the latter to put a different complexion on the silent calls.
The Woman from Atlántida was perhaps my favourite story. The story is told years later by a woman, now a hairdresser in Atlántida, a childhood holiday resort and scene of a family tragedy. She provides free haircuts to an elderly alcoholic woman, 'Pitys', a poet by background if no longer practice. She remembers, although seemingly Pitys doesn't, a key incident from her childhood that involved her, Pitys and her sister:
I wondered if she had recognised me, if she knew who I was and if that's why she came. Every once in a while I caught her looking at me. and I'd wait to see if one of us would venture to say something. I'd first met her almost forty years ago, during a three-week summer vacation. I was ten years old, and my sister was thirteen. I didn't see her again after that, and no one ever knew that Pitys was with us when the thing with my sister happened.
And then one day, a whole lifetime later, Pitys stopped in front of the window of this salon and stood staring inside until I went out to get here. When I asked what we could do for her she opened her mouth, but not a word came out. She studied my face for a few seconds, and finally looked down at her fingernails. It seemed as if she had discovered something new and soul-stirring in them, and I thought about the ceiling fan in her room, the photograph that she carried in the pocket of her robe, and the man who had told us about her that first time.
And the story she recounts, one of two precocious young girls presenting themselves as 'inspiration' to an alcoholic poet suffering from writer's block, and whose home they snuck into, is a complex one, more conventional than uncanny, but both moving and tragic.
Fever Dreams remains by favourite McDowell/Schweblin and set a high bar but this is as strong, possibly stronger, than the other collections.

An Eye in the Throat is narrated by a boy who when two years old swallows a lithium battery and ends up surviving but with a permanent tracheostomy to breath, and the permanent loss of his voice. His father though is fixated on (or perhaps transfer his guilt to) an event that occured 6 months later, when, on a long drive back from another hospital appointment, they stop at a YPF service station. The father has a hostile encounter with the service station owner, a man named Morris, and, perhaps distracted, he and his wife fail to notice the boy has left the car, and drive off without him (thinking he is asleep under a blanket in the back seat). They drive for an hour before realising and when they return Morris has found the boy and return him to them. But from that day on, the boy loses his vitality, and the father is plagued with silent phone calls on his landline, which he is convinced come from Morris. Twenty years later he returns to the garage to confront Morris, only for the latter to put a different complexion on the silent calls.
The Woman from Atlántida was perhaps my favourite story. The story is told years later by a woman, now a hairdresser in Atlántida, a childhood holiday resort and scene of a family tragedy. She provides free haircuts to an elderly alcoholic woman, 'Pitys', a poet by background if no longer practice. She remembers, although seemingly Pitys doesn't, a key incident from her childhood that involved her, Pitys and her sister:
I wondered if she had recognised me, if she knew who I was and if that's why she came. Every once in a while I caught her looking at me. and I'd wait to see if one of us would venture to say something. I'd first met her almost forty years ago, during a three-week summer vacation. I was ten years old, and my sister was thirteen. I didn't see her again after that, and no one ever knew that Pitys was with us when the thing with my sister happened.
And then one day, a whole lifetime later, Pitys stopped in front of the window of this salon and stood staring inside until I went out to get here. When I asked what we could do for her she opened her mouth, but not a word came out. She studied my face for a few seconds, and finally looked down at her fingernails. It seemed as if she had discovered something new and soul-stirring in them, and I thought about the ceiling fan in her room, the photograph that she carried in the pocket of her robe, and the man who had told us about her that first time.
And the story she recounts, one of two precocious young girls presenting themselves as 'inspiration' to an alcoholic poet suffering from writer's block, and whose home they snuck into, is a complex one, more conventional than uncanny, but both moving and tragic.
Fever Dreams remains by favourite McDowell/Schweblin and set a high bar but this is as strong, possibly stronger, than the other collections.

Es una arma de doble filo leer un nuevo libro de una autora que amas mucho y que te hizo mirar la literatura de una manera diferente y emocionante. Una quiere tener expectativas moderadas, no dejarse llevar por el amor previo de las historias anteriores pero tampoco tener esa mentalidad de esperar mucho y que te termine decepcionando. Algo parecido me pasó con Mariana Enríquez el año pasado.
Lo que me pasó con este libro es que siento que es una colección de cuentos buena, sólida, de calidad esperable para cualquiera que le encante leer cuentos e historias cortas (como a mí). O sea, si hipotéticamente yo nunca hubiera leído a Samanta Schweblin y hubiera empezado con este, estaría muy sorprendida y fascinada por lo ofrecen estas historias. Pero, al ser una lectora muy apasionada de sus libros anteriores, todos excelentes, me siento un poco... no decepcionada, pero sí confundida.
Como ya dije, los cuentos no están mal. Ninguno. Pero cuando los empecé no sentí que fuera Samanta Schweblin, sino una autora más del montón, que sabe escribir pero que no es para nada del estilo distintivo de la autora. Me acuerdo cuando leí Siete casas vacías y puse en mi reseña que yo la podría distinguir entre miles de otros... con este no puedo hacerlo. Son historias muy normales, seguras, tienen "ese" elemento que las aleja de lo cotidiano, de "la irrupción de lo inesperado", como bien dice la sinopsis, pero aun así se me presentan como algo completamente distinto, y que no logro definir si ese algo es bueno o malo.
Si trató de hacer algo nuevo, la aplaudo porque lo logró, pero, ¿era necesario? Ella es una genia de lo raro, de lo que te da miedo pero no podés definir. Me siento en un bucle confundida porque, sí, las temáticas de las historias son muy parecidas, pero son diferentes. Creo que no se me entiende así que me rindo. Ni yo me entiendo.
Bueno, dejando eso de lado, le doy una calificación alta porque sí que me gustó leerlo. Es abrirlo y verme sumergida en sus páginas, en el no parar hasta terminarlo. Ojo en la garganta es el mejor, el único que me hizo pensar 'por fin encontré lo que buscaba'. Es excelente, y está a la misma altura de Distancia de rescate y la Respiración cavernaria. Le siguen William en la ventana, que me impactó por lo personal, y la Mujer de Atlántida. Luego están Bienvenida a la comunidad, Un animal fabuloso y El Superior hace una visita, que están bien escritos y son olvidables simultáneamente, y no generaron tanto impacto en mí.
Aun así, leer lo más débil que Schweblin tiene para ofrecer es como leer lo mejor de otros autores, así que tampoco me quejo mucho (digo después de efectivamente haberme quejado).

March 10, 2025Yo me enojo con Schweblin como me enojaría con alguien a quien quiero mucho, o como una profesora de mi secundario se enojó con Favaloro porque se petisuis.
Es una excelente narradora de la economía del lenguaje, tal vez la mejor de este país. Si le robó a Carver y a Cortázar fue para ser igual —o casi, dejo de malicia— que Ocampo. Sabe muy bien donde usar cada palabra. En dónde falla Schweblin en su obra? En Kentukis, en "La respiración cavernaria", en "La valija de Benavídez", en todo relato que supera las quince páginas.
One way or another, lo que noto acá es casi vagancia, desconocimiento. Mucha guía de lectura, uso de la primera persona, enumeración de acciones; poca estructura, poca disciplina, poquísimo "Voy a escribir esto para generar esto". Que no lo digo de pword malo, sino porque la muchacha Schweblin es m-a-e-s-t-r-a en evitar todo lo que dije. La primera persona es lo más cercano al pensamiento que tenemos, rápido, permite divagar, no hay un narrador que tenga un trabajo que hacer, puede entregarse al placer del ego por completo. Cómo se suele empezar en un taller de escritura? Escribiendo un relato en primera persona. Con enumerar pasa lo mismo, "No sé qué escribir", bueno, enumerá una seguidilla de acciones, que se acumulen, y ahora qué? Otra seguidilla de acciones? Por favor no. Que todo te sirva como motor para impulsar otra cosa, no la misma. Y con la guía de lectura —momentos en los que los narradores aclaran para el lector— se termina de idiotizar lo narrado. Que lo entiendan todos. No. No todo el mundo sabe leer, leer no es para todos, no es innato, desplazá, haceme usar las neuronas. Falta confianza.
Historias raras, horror tenemos todos. Háblele a un fisura en la plaza y Stephen King va a quedar chiquitito. Lo que importa es escribirlas bien.
Bueno. Algunos ejemplos. Pocos. Porque todo está en la misma clave —voy a ser reiterativo, recíproco.
I- "Bienvenida a la comunidad": "Me suelto la nariz y bajo los brazos, el cuerpo se tensa. Una contracción llega desde los pulmones, es un espasmo, espero un poco más. Tanteo las piedras atadas a mi cintura, el nudo siempre puede deshacerse. Para evitar arrepentirme, inspiro. Lleno el pecho de agua y un frío nuevo y duro se me pega a las costillas. Quiero que esto pase sin dolor. Una decena de burbujas salen por la boca y la nariz y se elevan. Otro espasmo me acalambra y tengo miedo de lo que pueda ocurrir ahora". La enumeración es evidente. A Schweblin le sale muy bien en "Matar a un perro", porque genera suspenso, estamos atrás del narrador, acá en cambio es vulgar, "[...] es un espasmo", "Quiero que esto pase sin dolor.", "[...] tengo miedo de lo que pueda ocurrir ahora.". Dale, nenita. Son obviedades. Ya la situación es rara. Una mujer se tira al agua con piedras encadenadas a la cintura. Hacelo misterioso, hacelo schwebliniano, danos de comer menos de lo que necesitamos.
II- "Un animal fabuloso": Detalle de pword malo, la ambientación en un país extranjero para generar gancho en el mercado —se va a repetir en varios de los cuentos. En realidad no es tan de pword malo. La mejor Schweblin escribe en un "no lugar", porque el mundo es presentado extraño, lo conocemos y lo desconocemos, genera incomodidad, acá es un lugar más, sin peso. Escribe en plan "La gran autora de suspenso", Cl41r3 K33g4n, 3l3n4 F3rr4n73.
III- "nomeacuerdodelnombre": En un momento anestesian al protagonista para operarlo, dice "Me anestesian y me duermo", y se pone a narrar la operación ¿¿?? A propósito de qué trasciende perceptivamente la cercanía que tenemos con el narrador? "Me gusta", "Yo quiero", "Yo pienso", no hay otras herramientas para usar la primera persona? Uno abre Lolita en cualquier página y no se encuentra con nada de eso.
¿?- "El Superior hace una visita": Es el mejor. Hace las cosas bien. "Se había casado y se había divorciado, había tenido una hija que usó su primer sueldo para mudarse a otro continente.", qué excitante que repita el "había", ahí hay estilo, otro no lo hubiese escrito así; that's what good p*ssy sounds like. Uno se siente en un embudo sin saber a dónde va, o en el puente de Lady Gaga's new single "Abradacabra". Raro y ajustado. El único en tercera persona. Ahhh, muy lindo.
Igual la quiero.

Toen ik het laatste verhaaltje van deze bundel had gelezen was mijn eerste gedachte voor die andere Argentijn, regisseur Damián Szifron. Tien jaar geleden verscheen van hem de gitzwarte omnibusfilm 'Relatos Salvajes' (kijktip!), zes verhalen die op het eerste zicht niet met elkaar verbonden lijken, maar één groot thema met elkaar delen: wraak. Zes personages worden in evenveel korte filmpjes tot het uiterste gedreven tot er iets knapt. Waarna een groots - en soms grotesk - wraakspel in gang wordt gezet waarin ogenschijnlijk normale mensen op schitterende wijze door het lint gaan.
Zo ook in dit boek van Samanta Schweblin, nobele onbekende tot nu toe, dat mij in de handen werd geduwd in cadeauverpakking. Je krijgt zes verhalen op je bord die volledig los van elkaar lijken te staan, maar toch verbonden zijn door een overkoepelend thema. Elk van de personages komt op één of andere manier in aanraking met trauma en angst die ze willens nillens onder ogen moeten zien. Er is hen iets overkomen en dat komt subtiel maar tegelijk heel aanwezig terug om hen te kwellen. Ze kunnen het niet verklaren, wij als lezer kunnen er niet precies de vinger op leggen, maar het sijpelt naar binnen tussen de regels tot het onder je huid kruipt.
Vanaf pagina één van elk verhaal zit je er volledig in. De sfeer die Schweblin schijnbaar moeiteloos opbouwt, lijkt in het begin van elk verhaal compleet 'normaal'. Tot je op een gegeven moment - als in een goeie horrorfilm - voelt dat die sfeer kantelt of verdraait. Je komt in een andere betekenislaag terecht waarvan je onmiddellijk weet: dit zal blijven hangen. "Dit zijn geen spookverhalen." schrijft Leila Guerriero in haar review. "Het zijn iets veel ergers en veel beters: het zijn verhalen over mensen." De nagel op de kop.

Libro de seis cuentos que todos me dejaron las ganas de querer saber más y a la vez pienso que terminaban de forma perfecta. En lo cotidiano va apareciendo la depresión, el miedo, la muerte, la culpabilidad, el tedio, la falta de inspiración y de cordura y se van tejiendo cada una de estas historias, las cuales me han inquietado, me han conmovido y me han dejado pensando en cada una de ellas. Si tuviese que elegir, “Bienvenida a la comunidad”, “El ojo en la garganta” y “La mujer de Atlántida” serían las que más me han impactado, aunque pienso que todas merecen ser leídas.
No había leído nada de Samanta hasta ahora y solo me he quedado con las ganas de seguir leyéndola.
