The author opens by asking her reader to imagine walking through a woodsy area and spotting a fox. It could happen, I suppose, but I live in an area with many undeveloped spaces. Through the years I seen numerous raccoon, possums, skunks, groundhogs, and coyote, but I've only seen ONE fox and it was road kill. Are English foxes friendlier than their American cousins?
I've always thought that the fox is the most elegant of the dog family and Ms. Child points out that it has some cat-like characteristics, such as retractable claws and eyes that are especially adept at seeing in the dark. And fox babies are called "kits." Is the fox the missing link between dogs and cats?
As always happens when I read one of the books in this out-standing series, I learned some fascinating facts. I didn't know that both parents participate in raising the young or that a group of foxes is called a "leash." I knew of the Arctic Fox, but didn't know that their gorgeous (and, unfortunately, very sought-after) pelts change color with the season. I'm wondering about the foxes found in Australia. Are they a native species, or were they introduced by settlers? The very best books are the ones that leaving you wanting to know more and this author is an expert at inciting her reader's enthusiasm for exploring the natural world.
This is a fact-based educational guide to foxes to be read to children. Foxes look like dogs, but they are not domestic and friendly like your neighbor's dog. Foxes are wild, and they have enemies in the wild such as large wolves, coyotes (which are only a little larger than the fox), the lynx and eagle. You see, they are not much larger than a cat! They weigh about 13 pounds. Foxes don't live in packs like wolves, they live and hunt alone. The can be found all over the world, even the cold arctic. Read all about the families of foxes, how they live and hunt, and how they play. This is another wonderful guide to add to your collection which has been beautifully created by author Emma Child.
