Announcing Tether, the tiny prequel to my upcoming debut novel!
Jaelle needs to survive her five-year term at the Primordia Scholasticus without giving her older brother, the crown prince, another reason to hate her. But nothing has gone as planned.
She's spent her entire third year recovering from the traumatic end to her second. She pretends to be fine while ignoring the power she tasted, the toll it took on her body, and the piece of her soul she lost.
When chaos erupts at her brother's pegasus matching ceremony, all signs point to her. Now, she can no longer avoid the truth: the twenty-four hours she spent on a remote island didn't just change her. They might have rewritten her entire future.
Some highlights -
- Lots of pegasi and elemental magic flying around 😇in a contemporary fantasy setting - You meet Jaelle, my FMC, when she’s young, in training, and still flailing around trying to find her place in the world - Mostly takes place on a remote island where Jaelle and her friends have to outsmart and defeat a homicidal hermit to save themselves and innocent lives - Less than 20,000 words - easy to read in one sitting!
I received Tether as a gift after completing Rupture.
This was my first series featuring Pegasi (I would have said pegasuses but both are correct) and I really enjoyed the "partner" dynamic. As this book and Rupture are prequels, there is still so much to learn about the theory of how the tether works.
While Tether definitely comes "first" in the story, I enjoyed reading it second. I had a relationship already with the MCs and it was fun getting to know their younger selves and history in this way.
In this book, Jaelle starts to come into her own. As a leader, as an elemental earth magic user, and as part of a team. She has so much still to go with her studies and maturity, yet you can already see glimpses of her brilliance and what lies beneath.
Jaelle simply wants to graduate from the Primordia Scholasticus with her friends, where she’s learning to control her abilities wielding elemental earth powers.
What’s supposed to be a simple mission to a remote island, to bring a hermit back to the mainland, turns deathly wrong and has consequences that will follow her forever.
A short read, Tether is a prequel in the Rising of the Stars series, with strong yet flawed characters, hints of deeper political intrigue, a fantastic elemental magic system, and stunning Pegasi.
This is the perfect introduction to a new fantasy series, and had me hooked from start to finish.
A perfect quick read that’ll leave you wanting more.
What a breathtaking prequel! Tether may be short in length, but it overflows with heart, magic, and meaning. Jaelle’s struggles are so relatable even in a world filled with elemental magic and pegasi, she feels beautifully human. The island setting is vivid and atmospheric, the danger keeps you hooked, and the emotional depth lingers long after the last page. Edrie Elen has written something both powerful and enchanting I cannot wait for the full Rising of the Stars series!
This is a well-written teaser to the series that has good action pacing and makes me want to know more. While we have seen teens-fighting-on-an island, magic schools, and bonding to horses (in this case even better pm because they're pegasi), these are all things I enjoy and they were done well. I'm likely to read the first book in the series when it comes out in August 2025.
Tether is an energetic short story, giving great insight into Jaelle’s life, and the world she lives in, including Pegasi and elemental magic. I can’t wait to read more.
I received a free copy of this book, thank you Edrie Elen, and am voluntarily leaving a review.
