In an adaptation of the Christmas song "Santa Baby," a child dressed as Santa helps his mother as she decorates the tree, ties bows on gifts, and rolls out dough for holiday baking.
JANIE BYNUM is the author-illustrator of several books for children, including ALTOONA BABOONA. She says, "When I sat down to write Nutmeg and Barley, I was thinking about how opposites tend to attract. I also wanted to explore the consequences of miscommunication -- so common in all types of relationships. Finally, and probably most important, Nutmeg and Barley is about how friends nurture each other -- in spite of little tiffs or differences."
This is supposed to be based on the song, but It’s not the Santa Baby song I know. It’s given new words, that I guess work, but when trying to sing it, its hard. The illustrations feel as dated as they are, and while it’s a nice read, once the copy falls apart, the library will probably not try to replace it. #WinterGames2020 #TeamReadNosedReindeer +26
Apparently this is an adaption from a Christmas song, as there is the first verse with the music at the end of this book. I read this for my nearly 4 year old granddaughter and I simply didn't like it. I don't know if it was because the illustrations went against what the words were saying or if it was because it was so blocky (story didn't flow easy) Anyhow... we didn't like this book.
I was lucky that I roughly remembered the tune to this song while reading it, so was able to sing it to my son. He loves that and asked for me to "read it again" when it was over. The words are changed to be about a baby and its mama getting ready for Christmas, which I think is a very cute idea.
