Wastelander #2

The Outsider: A Post Apocalyptic Romance

Rate this book
The world was on fire, and no one could save me but him.

Newly homeless after being forced to abandon their camp by a group of violent cultists, Claire, John, and Kimmy set off on a long, dangerous journey to the one place that they might find safety: the Valley.

Pursued by the cultists and menaced by raiders and other hazards of the Wasteland, their journey is abruptly cut short when Kimmy is mortally wounded, and the only hope left is also the worst option: a trip back to the ruins of the Cave, the one place where life-saving medicine might still exist. To obtain it, however, they must navigate the compound that the cult now calls home and face the rising threat of its shadowy leader and his twisted obsession with Claire.

As John and Claire traverse a violent, unforgiving post-apocalyptic landscape, the bond between them only deepens, and the fierce passion between them burns brightly. Her desperation for a home and family she can call her own is matched only by John’s determination to protect the woman he loves from a world that seems hellbent on stealing her away from him.

The Outsider is the second book in The Wastelander Series and is the direct sequel to The Wastelander. Like the first book, it is a steamy post-apocalyptic romance that follows John Madigan and Claire Ainsley as they work to build a life together in a post-apocalyptic world. It features tropes like touch her and die, forced proximity, rescue romance, opposites attract, and forbidden love.

Please note: this book ends on a significant cliffhanger.

4.5 stars but rounding up cause yall need to read this because there isn't enough good romance post apocalypse and this just ticks all the boxes for a great PA series. I had such a good time reading the Outsider. It was actioned packed, and the romance was really well done. I loved being back in this world and seeing the different parts of this world, from the cult and compound to the wasteland to the valley.

One person got on my nerves alot, though, and I duno if I can reconcile with them, but we will see, I suppose. (You will know who I am talking about once you start reading)

The spice was so well done, and I loved Claire and John's love story, with Claire growing more confident with herself in particular.

It was pretty gritty in parts, but like I saw, someone else say it's not too dark! I was anxious in parts, so you know it's a well written story.

3.5 🌶

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review

Luck's novels are nothing short of extraordinary. Having read three of her works now—a full-length masterpiece, a captivating novella, and her latest—I can confidently say she is a literary force to be reckoned with. "The Wastelander" was one of my favorite books in 2024; I couldn't stop singing its praises and urging everyone I knew to read it. Her storytelling is simply magical, effortlessly drawing you in and tugging at your heartstrings while making you fall deeply in love with the characters.

I was absolutely thrilled to have the chance to read "The Outsider" ahead of its release. This book is a treasure trove of emotion and excitement—it’s everything you could wish for and so much more! It grips you from the very first page, keeping you on the edge of your seat with its twists and turns. You’ll find yourself swooning over the romance and blushing at the beautifully crafted moments. It’s the kind of book that you just can't bear to put down, and you’ll likely find yourself reading late into the night, completely captivated.

I am eagerly counting down the days until the third installment is out, as I simply can't get enough of this series. Luck's work is truly phenomenal, and I wholeheartedly encourage everyone to immerse themselves in her incredible storytelling. This series is a must-read—don't miss out on the magic!

Second novel in the Wastelander series and it is better if you’ve read the first before starting this one.

We continue with Claire, John and Kimmy’s survival in the Wasteland of post apocalyptic Canada. The cult that overthrew Claire’s compound and now her Wasteland camp seem to be tracking her every move. John is trying to stay 10 steps ahead in preparation for their arrival at Summerhurst, and they don’t like Outsiders. Kimmy is wounded and the only life saving medical treatments that they know about are back at the compound.

This is an adventurous and hopeful story of the test of love and found family, that sometimes you should trust your gut and that the path to a happy ending is never straightforward.

This second book in the gritty, post apocalyptic world of Claire and John, who come from wildly opposed and isolated communities, explores a corner of their world that is new for readers. After a long absence, John returns home with Claire: the outsider. One of her core conflicts is that she’s never felt she had true home or family.

I’m enjoying this series. Tensions are high as we see conflicts play out between characters with very different agendas. A rogue cult and another mysterious group drive some of the action. The book is pretty spicy (in a good way!) and at times a bit dark, while at other times the overly traditional romance had me eye rolling. This book ends on a cliffhanger!

There is a nickname in this book that is not my favorite, and at one moment, John has a touch of a bullying personality that echoed his behavior for part of book one. He is largely protective and supportive in this book, giving Claire credit for accomplishments that she struggles at times to take for herself. I was pleased to see Claire’s strength grow during this story. I’m definitely curious to see how some of the mysteries left open in this second book are resolved in the series conclusion!

The book has a Content Note at the start.

This is my second ARC for this author, and honestly I’ll read any book she’s willing to give me. This author is the first I ever gave a 5⭐️ rating to for an ARC, and she deserved it.

The Outsider is the second book in this series and I LOVED IT, maybe even more than the first.

I think I liked this book more than the first. The character development was top tier. I found myself connecting deeply with our mains Claire and John. I love deep character development and this book delivered. John and Claire also have incredible chemistry, and the spice was spicing! 🔥

I found myself on a rollercoaster of emotion, and for the 30% of the book I was basically wearing a hole in the carpet for how much I was pacing! It was so good and the cliffhanger ending has me just about dying for the next book.

Whether or not you’re into post apocalyptic romance, I highly recommend giving this series a chance and supporting an amazing indie author!

Okay, wow. That ending was painful! I cannot wait for the next book in this series!

I love dystopian and post apocalyptic vibes in a book, but they are often very similar because they always have such high tech. I don't know why I haven't read more books like this, where there isn't that much tech. It's mostly survival. I need more like this! Following John and Claire on their journey through so many difficult things was amazing. I loved seeing them grow as characters and seeing how smart and strong they truly are. Plus, that scene with Zach?? IYKYK. I was PUMPED! Haven't been that happy in a while! Anyway, if you like post apocalyptic/survival stories, but also want equal amounts of romance, THIS is the book for you!

What an adventure!!
I liked this more than book one. The spice and characters and events! There's twists and turns!
I love how Claire has developed as a person throughout both books and seeing more of John was exactly what I wanted. I need the 3rd book stat!
If you are looking for a plot driven adventure with delicious smut, E. S. Luck has it!

The Outsider de E.S. Luck Serie The Wastelander libro 2

Argumento:

After stumbling on to ‘The Wastelander’ last year. I was so excited to find out there was going to be a second book. I received this as an ARC from the author but this is my honest opinion.
After enjoying the first one so much, this book did not disappoint and I just could not give it less than 5*s. I loved following up on Claire and John’s story. The connection between these two is amazing.
Other elements about the post apocalyptic world were also brought in to this book, which really added to the story. The vastly different ways of life from the compounds to the gangs. Mixed in with a few twists and turns. Spot on. I would 100% recommend this book series and cannot wait for any follow up books. Because of course I need to know what happens next :).

The World was on fire, and no one could save me but him

Page 1 of chapter 1, Claire's having night terrors... Claire is ready to die when the man sacrificing her is stabbed from behind. A very graphic reliving of what had happened in book one. She didn't know who wore the mask.

Blood on your hands, you live on borrowed time, girl

She also saw Asha, asking if she'd forgotten her. Go figure, that little chip in her arm that kept her healthy was also a type of tracking device. John helps her out by letting her cuddle when needed when she had nightmares. I loved how sweet he was to her after her nightmares, letting her know he was always going to be with her and telling her she may as well be family now that he was bringing her home. Other times it seemed as if they were trying to out tease each other. It turns out our Claire is a bit of an exhibitionist, not really in public... but in a place she can easily be caught.

I want to push your limits, Wastelander, I want to bring you to your knees

I couldn't help but laugh when Claire introduced John to Asha as her boyfriend, Asha and Holly both definitely hated John while Holly was far more vocal about it.

Oh shut up, Holly, I know they've ramped up that whole cult shit to eleven here, but to me, you'll always be my best friend's little dipshit sister.

The reason they're all going after Claire is because "John J" had a"vision" that said that he and his followers hadn't ascended because Claire wasn't sacrificed.

The Vessel for his ultimate self-actualization, the true key to harnessing the power of our goddess Odessa—she with her Eye of Truth, that observes all things, all places, all times. You, the sole survivor, are the ultimate test.

At the Altar he'd lay claim to his Vessel, for from her body, she quenches all thirst. When he is sated, his Dagger of Truth will pierce her heart, and from her, he will take the core of the rebellious spirit—the heart of the sole survivor—and eat of her flesh, absorbing her power and becoming one with her, so as to complete his most sacred Ascension. All the world would be awash in his Vision, and all words of defiance will be ash in the mouths of the unworthy.

I loved that Claire slapped her sister when she wouldn't let her turn off her tracking chip. The fact that it seemed to stun her sister actually made me laugh. When Asha asked to come, I knew it was basically going to be the little bit of humanity Claire had vs the YEARS of being a Wastelander, John had of just not trusting people, but Asha was able to come. I loved when Claire finally came to her senses and told her sister that the cult would kill her for letting her escape. "Sounds like a you problem." I couldn't be more proud of her in that moment.

When they ran into the gang(?) I was happy to see John taking care of Asha the same way he was Claire, making sure she didn't get hurt and was able to escape from the gang she'd been captured by before. Then Asha's hot and cold, acting in strange ways that Claire's not used to, even her smile's weird. Thinking it's just from the time with the gang she'd been with before, Claire sees the moments where her friend is acting like her old self and tries to keep her safe.

I loved Sarah once they got to the Armstrong's farm, Claire's reaction to meeting and petting a friendly was too cute, but Sarah's instant instinct to fatten them up was sweet.

I really felt for John, Claire and Asha at the town meeting, the town had voted to basically throw out Asha and Claire, that was, until John said he had more PNC's and he wasn't handing them over unless the girls got to stay. I just always seem to have a reason to love John more as the story goes on, telling Claire that he had to disguise her and Asha because they were too beautiful when Claire was thinking she was essentially the ugly duckling because of how her mother treated her. I loved when they went to the seamstress and Claire seemed to become close friends with her while John said that Claire needed everyday clothes and a wedding dress. While quite a few people are making Claire feel welcome, Asha's constantly going out and doing her own thing.

Of course in her new surroundings, she has a small group of people trying to cause problems, at one point she had five people following her and John, saying vile things to her. Because of Zach and his minions. Claire didn't even feel safe in her new home, Zach being the the compound leader's son, he was essentially a psychopath who thought he could possibly Claire and get away with it because of his father.

John loses track of Asha and while searching sees Zach who leads her into the forest, John follows them and finds out Asha had been using her scavaging missions trying to raido out to other groups and get out of The Valley. She ended up finding The Delta, she found The Order, the people who'd been hunting down Claire in the first place, the cult now laying seige to the town. He shot Zach and Asha and had to run back to the valley. John tells Danny everything that happened in the forest and Danny seemed to be proud of John.

You killed a traitor who attacked your Chief and was going to sell us all out to a dangerous Outsider, you kept your oath, which is to the Valley, to not its chairman. You did your job.

She's found again, this time they almost seem to be more like Military Police. Delta, the people that Asha had been trying to get a hold of. My heart broke for her:

You don't need to worry, no Wastelanders will pursue us. I left a crew behind to deal with the one who was chasing you. He's been dealt with. He won't hurt you again.

John's going to hunt down The Order and get his wife back. They don't know what kind of hell they've just brought upon themselves. I can't wait for book 3

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐: Absolutely amazing writing. The author seemed to take reader suggestions, or it’s a coincidence. The plot, characters, and story gave me what I hoped for.

Introduction:
This is my book review of The Outsider by E.S. Luck. I read The Wastelander and loved it, so I couldn’t wait to dig into this one.

Summary:
The story starts where we left off in The Wastelander when their camp was attacked by The Order cult. KIMMY gets hurt. I was not okay with this. Claire offers a solution to save Kimmy’s life and she and John risk their lives to save hers (as it should be). We find Asha! She comes back with Claire and doesn’t get along with John the entire story. John gets a bad feeling about her.

In survival mode, all four of them make the trek back to the Valley in the dead of winter in Canada. Honestly, if they didn’t make it when they did. I would have given them a week until they perished in the cold. The valley doesn’t accept Claire and Asha as they are outsiders. Claire tries to gain their acceptance of the majority of the book by offering knowledge, patience, and any help that she can provide. Asha doesn’t try at all, but is snippy and snarky to Claire, Kimmy, and John throughout her time in the Valley. Asha’s arc is surprising.

The Order is hunting Claire because she is considered the Vessel; but we find out that it’s just a coverup for the cult leader to tie up loose ends as he is closer to Claire’s family than even she knows. Ultimately Claire’s device inside of her is undetectable after 500 metres (I think that’s correct) but they end up finding her through a person that we weren’t expecting. Luck writes this so well because I don’t think that anyone sees this coming.

Claire and John’s romance grows as well as their intimacy. ““I want to push you to your limits, Wastelander,” I whispered against his mouth. “I want to bring you to your knees.”” Their romance is weaved into the story beautifully. “The connection between us couldn’t be broken. What we had was stronger than what we’d been through.” They decide to get married once they settle in the Valley. Their spicy scenes are natural and grow their relationship especially after they get married; their intimacy explodes off the pages.

Character Analysis:
Claire - soft spoken, sweet, kind, and shy. Claire comes across as a woman who doesn’t know how to survive without modern amenities until she proves herself to John and Kimmy out in the Wasteland. She steps up to show genuine kindness to the people of the Valley and those outside in the Wasteland when they need help. This naivety doesn’t always bode well for her safety. The way that she is there for John when he’s at his most vulnerable is beautiful and realistic. ““Your grief is just all that love with nowhere to go.””

John - tense, serious, resourceful, and genuinely cares deeply for those in his friend/family circle. John believes that everyone will love Claire because he does. It is undeniable that he cares for her on a deeper level that may borderline insanity. ““I’ll give you everything you want, baby. I promise. But it’s our wedding night. Let me love you for a while.””

Conflict:
There are a few conflicts:
Claire being hunted by the Order (and maybe by another villain).
Claire makes peace with her relationship with her mother and how she can’t save her sister Holly.
Claire and John try to build a happy/practical life in the Valley but they won’t accept her.

Spice Level:
🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️💋: A lot of smex scenes and not a slow burn. The scenes were a great length with great description. The intimacy between John and Claire is always delicious to read.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, The Outsider by E.S. Luck was the kind of dystopian romance that I was hoping it would be. There are some mundane parts, but that helps me see how good their lives can be without disruption; almost like a foreshadowing of their happily ever after. I do wonder about this virus though. I think that it occurred decades ago and there doesn’t seem to be any flare ups in the present. However, Kimmy does develop an infection and I wonder if it has to do with the infection that wipes out the majority of the population. I would like to see if that virus comes around again.

Warning to the Readers:
There is violence, gore, cannibalism, and life-threatening high suspense.

Recommendation:
I recommend reading The Outsider by E.S. Luck; there is a cliffhanger. It is book two in the Wastelander series, so pick up the first book where you read how John and Claire’s romance started.

I received an advance review copy in exchange for an honest review.

"Post-apocalyptic novel with crazy cultists, lots of smut, yet somehow wholesome." – That’s how I described this book to my friend.

This is book two in what is planned to be a trilogy (possibly a four-book series—the author confirmed book three is in the making, but it might be split into two parts). The story picks up just days after book one ends, following our trio as they try to make their way back to the Valley. Along the way, they become a foursome, which adds new challenges as they battle the brutal post-apocalyptic winter.

Not only is this book longer than the first, but it's also more fast-paced and action-packed—except for their time in the Valley, which feels like a calm before the storm. And that storm? It arrives in the form of a cliffhanger. While it’s not as gut-wrenching as waiting to see who Negan killed in The Walking Dead, it’s also not as mild as the cliffhanger in book one. Let’s just say I stared at my e-reader for a while, hoping I had somehow missed the next few pages.

I loved seeing John and Claire’s relationship grow, especially their improved communication. Claire is gaining confidence and learning to navigate her new reality—something I was hoping to see in this book. And Luck definitely turned up the heat in the smut department.

I’m used to dark romance, but despite all the trigger warnings, I wouldn’t even categorize this as one. It’s a post-apocalyptic novel, first and foremost. And yet, amidst the chaos, there are still moments of humor and heart. One line that stuck with me:
"Love really does make you into a hopeless dumbass."

This book delivers on so many levels—romance, reunions, found family, and siblings working together. I especially enjoyed the group dynamic and how their pasts, along with the harsh environment, influence their ability to communicate and trust one another.

As for the world itself, we get three major sections:
The cult – where we learn more about their twisted ways.
The wasteland – where our foursome faces all kinds of challenges and is forced to work together.
The Valley – where, unsurprisingly, their arrival isn’t exactly met with open arms. Hence, The Outsider.

One thing I really wanted more of? A certain beloved side character who went through a lot in this book. I wish we had seen more of her perspective especially because of the challenges and struggles she faced.

Overall, Outlander is an intense, gripping, and emotional read that I couldn’t put down. Bring on book three!

This book is an epic story of survival in a post-apocalyptic romance. I've tried not to include any spoilers, but note that this is book two in the series, so if you haven't read book one then you should.

I loved book one and couldn't wait to continue Claire and John's story. We got to see more world-building in this book which set a visual picture of the landscape in this world where the outlanders reign supreme. There are cannibals, gangs, extreme weather, cults, and communities where enemies hide in plain sight.

The pacing was great, there was a good mix of action and downtime where we got to know John, Claire, and Kimmy even better. I was on the edge of my seat with the twist with Kimmy and was rooting for their characters through the entire story. My favorite part was the relationship between John and Claire. John is such a well-rounded character, and I like that we got to see a more vulnerable side to him and learn about more of his life. He will do anything for Claire, and at the same time, she will do anything for him.

Claire grew a lot in this book as well, growing stronger mentally and physically, but also showed that it's not a weakness to see the good in others. She stands up for what she believes in and I liked the vulnerability she shows, especially starting in the Valley and wanting to fit in. John and Claire are a team, and I adored the softer moments between the two of them and their journey into seeing their strengths and forming a life together. The spice was also well done and just brought everything together.

I loved getting to see Kimmy, and it was interesting to see her dynamic with a returning character briefly featured in book one. The same character frustrated me at times in the story, but it was exciting and eye-opening to see her past and hints of what happened after their separation. There was a lot of build-up in wondering what was going to happen, and I couldn't read fast enough.

There are so many great quotes in this book and I found myself rereading multiple parts just because of how beautiful the writing was. I can't give anything away, but that cliffhanger had me jumping out of my seat wishing I had book three in front of me. What an ending! I enjoyed every twist and turn and can't wait to see what happens next.

If you like romance, found family, great sibling dynamics, gritty post-apocalyptic settings, and spice then this is the book for you.

Rating: 5/5 stars
Steam level: Multiple open-door scenes

Thoughts:
The Outsider is an excellent continuation of The Wastelander Series. There is no shortage of action moments, and the romance and spice are also plentiful. This unique blend of sweetness and suspense made this book both eventful and very enjoyable to read.

John and Claire are as endearing as ever. The attraction between them burns hot, and the resulting steamy scenes truly reflect their unwavering affections; these moments were especially memorable for me. Aside from the steamy parts, there are also adorable conversations and sweet nothings that impart such a swoony quality in their relationship. Given the dire nature of their circumstances, the lingering lovey-dovey moments in this book felt extra special–almost as if there was a “stolen” quality embedded within.

There is also an interesting shift in Claire and John's dynamics during this book. Each part of the story had its unique challenges, and I loved witnessing their relationship evolve as they weathered the varying storms of each part. Relationships change over time, and the author conveyed this progression well.

Aside from the romance, the author was faithful to her characters while including meaningful development. John’s protectiveness, Kimmy’s loving nature, and Claire’s hopefulness are showcased beautifully and gradually change given their highly transformative and dangerous post-apocalyptic environment. The pacing was variable in that some parts were very fast-paced, and some slowed down with purpose, which made this book truly feel like a journey. It is unique in the sense that readers who enjoy fast-paced action would enjoy it, and readers who also appreciate the slower and routine pace of life would also feel satisfied.

There were some moments of dialogue that I could not fully connect with, but this is due to taste and not the quality of the book itself. Overall, I had a great time reading The Outsider and believe that readers who enjoy post-apocalyptic romances would enjoy this book.

I received beta and advanced reader copies of this book. All opinions are my own.

Oh, wow, this book is even better than the first.

The camp where Claire, John, and Kimmy has been destroyed by a group of violent cultists, so the three of them will start the long trip to the Valley, Their trip is abruptly halted when Kimmy is wounded, and the only chance she has of surviving is if Claire and John can get into Claire’s previous home, the Cave, to steal the medications that will save her. While they will succeed in their mission, they also learn that the mysterious leader of the cult is obsessed with Claire and will stop at nothing to capture her. An already dangerous journey to the Valley is made even more hazardous but the fact that they must avoid not only cultists, but also the roving gangs, cannibals, and the natural hazards of the wilderness to get home.
Hang onto your hats fellow readers of this series, you are in for one heck of a wild ride! This book is an action-packed, on foot, cross country adventure through a post-apocalyptic country. Murder, mayhem, bloody violence, death, sexual violence, human trafficking, steamy sexual interactions between the female and male main characters, plus drug and alcohol use, this book has all of that, so I recommend reading the author’s trigger warnings. I personally loved these characters. They are all so well written that it is easy to understand what motivates them. Complex, and in some cases twisted, personalities that kept me engrossed in the pages of this book. A wonderful romance with lots of steam, but this book ends in a cliffhanger so there is no happily ever after. I highly recommend this book, but it is absolutely necessary to read the first book before diving into this one.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary ARC I received from the author.

Oh my gosh, E.S. Luck sure knows how to write a story. Ever since reading the Wastelander, I have been anxiously awaiting the next book. IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT!! John and Claire have a special relationship that you will not find in many books. They have each other’s back and love each other unconditionally. They are patient and kind with one another and work well as a team. Claire is selfless, determined, and hardworking. She is will always fight for what she cares about and who she cares about. John loves fiercely, and takes his job as protector seriously. Kimmy is that girl, she is a fast thinker, insanely smart, and as hard as they come. If I could choose one person to help me through the apocalypse, it would be kimmy. I have felt all the feels through this book, I’ve laughed, adored, cried, and it even kicks up my anxiety here and there lol. Traveling through the wasteland and finding her true people Claire is brought to the beautiful valley where she has to fight to be accepted. Fighting from every angle, the people who don’t think she belongs, cannibals, gangs, the obsessive cults, nature, and even people she trusted. She finally feels at peace, but as we know that feeling usually doesn’t last for long. This is the type of book you cannot put down. I originally found this story by looking for spicy books. However, I’ve found myself skipping the spicy scenes (not because they weren’t amazing because they absolutely were) ,but because I was so anxious to see what happened next. I think I may die waiting for the next book, but as E.S. Luck has proven, it will be amazing and worth the wait.

So I'm not going to lie, after the beginning of the book started off so strongly, I struggled to get through about the first 25% of the book. I understand the author is trying to give us an insight to the dystopian atmosphere of the book but it became a bit repetitive. After that though, I devoured the remainder of the book.

John & Clair, Kimmy & Asha go on a long journey, mostly by foot, to try to make it back to John & Kimmy's home. Not much happened on their journey, though there were a couple of stand out scenes, until they finally made it. Even then, though there was a warm welcome home for John & Kimmy, Claire and Asha were made to feel very unwanted. Claire worked hard to become accepted by the community, while Asha decided to become a scavenger, taking her away for long periods of time. We learn a bit about them reopening their home and farm, what it takes to get it all up and running again as well as having John & Claire become closer.

Then a betrayal from no where brings the Order down on them all and Claire has to run for her life. Surprisingly someone from her past actually helps her after the Order gets their hands on her and then we go through a month or so of Claire just existing, right up until before her wedding. Finally, John has a breakthrough with her and they get their dream wedding. While away on a short honeymoon, much happens right at the end of the book that leaves you gasping and wondering just how our lovers are going to find their ways again. I really can't wait to see what happens in the next books!

Claire is just too good. She’s strong, loyal, and guided by her heart even when the world around her is falling apart. I’ve loved her since book one, and in this story she grows even more — brave, determined, and deeply human. The romance between her and John Madigan was everything: emotional, intense, and beautifully written. Their bond felt so real and gave the story so much warmth. You really see Claire open up more in this book, and the way her relationship deepens added a whole new layer to her story. I loved how the romance intensified. It felt real — messy, emotional, and hard-won — exactly what you’d expect in a world like this.

Asha, though… whew. Still not my favorite. She had me rolling my eyes more than once, but that just shows how well the author writes complex characters. And Summerhurst — it was everything they promised. The setting came alive, and the new characters added tension and heart.

Kimmy was my favorite secondary character — steady, brave, and easy to love. She added so much heart to the story without ever taking away from Claire.

The pacing and world-building were top-notch, and that ending… total cliffhanger! I closed the book saying “No way, not here!” I need book 3 now. Four stars only because it left me hanging — otherwise, another great continuation of a world and cast I’ve completely fallen for.

I didn't know The Wastelander was a series till I came across this looking for a new book to devour. When I say I was absolutely beyond excited. I loved the first book and this is no different. I can't even begin to describe the amount of emotions i had for this.

Its amazing and gives you all the emotions: Happy, Sad, Mad, Rage. Some emotions that don't even names just everything all wrapped into one book and even that even properly describe this book. I devoured this book and cannot wait for the next one to come out.

We catch up with Claire, John, and Kimmy as they make the journey to The Valley and follow all the twist and turns that come along. When i say the twists are twisting the turns are turning. They had me gobsmacked clutching pearls and even at some points pacing around my room muttering to myself like a crazy lady. The plot twists was even plottier and was absolutely unhinged.

We meet some great new characters and some not so friendly ones too. The spice was 5 peppers the book itself easily 5 stars. Need the next book to know what happens next as it does end on a cliff hanger now I'm like an addict waiting for the next fix of book.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Thank you to E.S Luck for the ARC.

Plot 3.5/5
Characters 3.75/5
Ending 3.75/5
Interest 3.75/5

Overall 3.5/5

-I wish that the romance in this book took a step back. Now that the characters are together, I would have liked the book to focus more on the post-apocalyptic and survival aspect of the story rather than have the characters sleep together whenever they have the chance and then get married. Other than that, I still quite enjoyed this book. I still really liked the different groups of people figuring out how to survive in their own way. The plot itself of infiltrating and escaping from the compound was interesting enough to keep things going.

-I still like the characters. Their development is interesting and goes along well with their situation. Except when it comes to sex. I will say this for almost every book with spice but they don’t need to be having sex or commenting on having or not having sex every chapter. Things can happen without them sleeping together every day. That’s probably my biggest issue with the book. Again, I just wish that the romance became a subplot now that their together and truly in love with nothing that can separate them. Her friend though, I knew she was sketchy.

-The ending is interesting enough to keep me questioning but not mind blowing enough that I have a need for the sequel. Will I be picking it up? Sure. But I have to be honest that I already forgot what the ending actually entails. That’s a me problem though.

✨ugh, I love this series so much. I arc read the first book, and even though it wasn’t something I normally read I fell in love with it and its characters. I was so excited when I got this one in my email because I’ve been dying to see what happens next. I loveddd seeing John and Claire’s growth, together and especially their growth on their own. It was truly amazing. I was captivated from the beginning. John only gets better, such a loving and sexy ass wastelander. 😮‍💨 I got answers to questions I had from the first book, along with even more questions I hope to get answered in the next one. I LOVED IT. & that ending, ooooo girl I was yelling at you. I know my babies are gonna get their HEA but damnnnn why did you have to do me like that?! 🤣🤣
If you’re looking for a really good, spicy dystopian romance, I 10000% recommend this one. It’s phenomenal.

I LOVE CLAIRE & JOHN
The first book was so intense and different from anything I’ve read before, this was no different. There’s A LOT that happened. And that ending had me screaming, definitely can’t wait for the next.

I’m obsessed with John I highlighted so much from him. He’s so protective and obsessed with Claire. Claire grew a lot from the first book. Getting used to this post apocalyptic world is hard, she’s a very strong fmc. I really like how caring and sweet she is though.

"ʏᴏᴜ ᴀʀᴇ ɴᴏᴛ ᴡᴇᴀᴋ. ʙᴇɪɴɢ ᴛʀᴀᴜᴍᴀᴛɪᴢᴇᴅ ʙʏ ᴀʟʟ ᴛʜɪꜱ ꜱʜɪᴛ ɪꜱɴ'ᴛ ᴡᴇᴀᴋɴᴇꜱꜱ; ɪᴛ'ꜱ ʙᴀꜱɪᴄ ʜᴜᴍᴀɴɴᴇꜱꜱ."

The plot was great. This book is very fast paced. There’s emotional moments. Of course I loved the spice! There’s some twists!!! I didn’t find this book as dark as the first. If you want a post apocalyptic romance I recommend this series so much!

Whoa. This was a wild ride. I made a joke early on in my read of this where I said that you couldn’t close your eyes or Claire would be missing... I stand by that. lol! She is just a magnet for bad luck. This second book was certainly spicier than The Wastelander - and some of it is filthy, middle of the woods in an old shed... so of course, it was hot.
There was ALOT going. And it was long. It felt like chaos and conflict the entire time. More adventure, action and thrill and less romance. But I suppose that may come with the territory of an apocalyptic romance.
I will admit that while some things were predictable, I still was shocked at a twist or two.
I hate to admit it, but I don’t love John. I think he’s kind of douchey with a superiority complex. But I’ve liked men much worse than him, so take that with a grain of salt.
Overall, I really enjoyed the second book in this series and look forward to the next books, and to see Claire and John get their happy ending, someday! (I also so hope that Kimmy can find her love too.)

Thank you to the author for the opportunity to advance read this book.

BETA READ

Listen. I devoured The Wastelander like it was the last Twinkie in a nuclear winter. So I could not wait to get my grabby hands on The Outsider.

This series? No zombies. Just mankind being the absolute worst. And when I say the worst, I mean cultists, cannibals, and cunts - pick your flavour of nightmare fuel.

Most of your faves are back, some of your not faves have the audacity to still be breathing. But the main event? The return of Daddy John, his filthy mouth, and that red-hot spanking hand. Hnngh. 🫠💦

This book has all the feels, all the tension, and just when you think you might be able to unclench? BOOM. Cliffhanger. I am unwell. ES said suffer, and suffer I did.

If you love books that strip humanity bare (both metaphorically and sometimes literally), that make you love, hate and violently crave vengeance and that make you question whether you’d survive the apocalypse (spoiler: you wouldn’t), this is for you. A fresh, brutal, spicy take on the end of the world.

Now, ES, about that next book … I have needs. Urgent ones.

Finishing this book knowing there will be book #3 had me wanting to scream! I'm so happy we will get to learn more about these characters in this post-apocalyptic world. Claire and John are the definition of love. Against all odds, they found each other, and despite what anyone thought, they knew they were meant to be together. My favorite quote from this book is: "If I am the night, you are the stars." Their strength together along with their undying attraction even in the face of danger is not only so sweet, but insanely hot. This book is full of spice, and I can't get enough.
We get to see more of Kimmy, which I love, and we learn that Asha is still alive.
We get to see the softer side of John and see Claire face so much that it should break her, but she has so much growth that nothing can keep her down. Between their new home bringing dangerous challenges, her old home haunting her, and the crazy psychos including her family after her, she is beyond strong.
Major shocking moments, plot twists, and also sweet moments. Loved this book, so much!

You do need to read book 1 (The Wastelander) before you read this book because it's a continuation of the story started in book 1. You will be lost without it.

I gave this book four stars. I liked that this book kept with it's post apocalyptic tense survival feel but explored some of the mysteries that were introduced in book 1 more deeply. We finally get to see "The Valley" where people have carved out a peaceful life in the middle of the wasteland. I don't want to post any spoilers but I have loved Claire's development as a person. I wasn't sure of her in book 1 because she seemed to be just a sheltered compound girl but she proves that she's a survivor but kept her core essence. I now see her as my favorite character in the story. The only reason I didn't give this a five star review was the middle kinda dropped off plot wise. I put it down for a bit then came back to it. I'm glad I did because it definitely ended with a bang. I'm looking forward to book 3!

I received an advanced copy of this book and these are my honest opinions.

This book was everything I hoped for and more!

I had to sit with that cliffhanger for a few days before I wrote my review. When does the 3rd book come out? 😅 my girl has to be ok!!

This gave me Walking Dead vibes without the zombies. The found family, the community, building back up from the bottom, and the strength in the will to survive!!

The spice was 🥵

Watching Claire grow into her true self made me so proud and happy.

I loved the world building, I loved when Claire got to experience new things and meet Alma 🐕 and Poppy. 🐎

I never would've thought that a post apocalyptic book could give me Pretty Woman's vibes but when Claire met Nimkii, it had me smiling and kicking my feet.

Im very intrigued to find out more about the cult leader and his secrets.

Some favorite quotes:

I want to push you to your limits, Wastelander. I want to bring you to your knees.

Im your strength. And you're my heart. That's why we need eachother.

Love really does make you into a hopeless dumbass. 😂

Stars: 4.5/5
Spice: 3.5/5

This book really delivered on the action I felt was missing in the first, keeping me completely immersed in the story from start to finish. The romance and spice were also perfectly balanced, adding depth without overpowering the plot. Claire’s growth as a character, both individually and in her relationship with John, was a highlight; I loved watching her stand up for herself and evolve into such a strong FMC. John’s emotional development was also well done, particularly his journey to open up and accept love. Kimmy’s increased presence was a treat, though I was disappointed we didn’t get a chapter from her POV—she’s a character that deserves her own spinoff! With a cliffhanger ending and a certain character’s actions still weighing heavily on me, I’m eagerly anticipating what’s next in book 3.

Overall Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ / 5

Storyline: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ / 5
Spice Level: 🌶🌶🌶🌶 / 5
Recommendation: Yes
Format: Ebook
Tropes: Second book in a series, found family, dystopian, post-apocalyptic romance
This book delivered fantastic character development, especially with John and Claire. Their ability to navigate difficult conversations and build a lasting connection kept me hooked. The story introduced a new setting and expanded the world with fresh characters, adding layers of complexity and adventure.

One new character, in particular, was tough to like. While I’m hopeful for a redemption arc, I wish she had more redeeming qualities to hint at her growth potential.

My biggest critique is the pacing—some slow sections felt unnecessarily drawn out, making certain parts of the book drag. A tighter narrative could have enhanced the overall flow. Despite this, the emotional depth, strong relationships, and quotable moments made this a compelling read.

Would recommend!

I couldn't wait to read more of this story! You will want to read the first book to find out how Claire, John, and Kimmy story starts to unfolds. It's a really good post apocalypse story. I love that Claire has been getting more confident with herself.
The spice was great, and I just love Claire and John. They are the perfect couple, I love hearing how they survive everything together. I can't wait to get my hands on the 3rd and possibly final book. This series leaves you wanting more, you want to keep reading.

I thought E.S Luck books were well written. I had forgotten these were her first books and asked for more of them. Being her first ones she of course didn't have any but she did give me GREAT recommendation for another book series to try! I absolutely LOVED that she went above and beyond to share those recommendations.
