Grasshoppers have invaded Independents, and the crops are under attack. Hunter seeks out help from the kids in Cozad, but finds them served up like cold cuts at a deli to the emaciated horseman of the apocalypse known as Famine.
After Hunter meets the eye-appealing Barbara, who prefers to be called Barbie, he has to constantly remind her that he has a girlfriend. Sometimes he reminds himself. The distraction is only temporary as he risks his life to protect the children from Famine’s hunger.
With Barbie fighting at his side to free the Cozad kids, Hunter discovers he is immune to physical harm, even though the pain from his brother’s death remains heavy on his shoulders. He knows everything will be all right if he holds himself together long enough to make it back home to Molly, unless Famine and his swarm of insects arrive there ahead of him.
Ted Hill grew up in the front pew of the Methodist church in Denton, Texas where he honed his scribbling skills on the church bulletin. He peaked as a senior in high school when he became Class President, Homecoming King, All-District Offensive Tackle, and Class Clown. He also failed Spanish II and Geometry, but graduated because of football credits. Ted then took his talents to Bethany College in the middle of Kansas where he fell in love with the heartland. He now lives in Colorado.
This has been a much anticipated book to say the least!!!
This post-apocalyptic story is set in the town of Independents. A town ran by kids because all of the adults died from a Plague in the first installment of this series. In this book we are introduced to the nasty being Famine. He has sent a swarm of grasshoppers to demolish every last morsels of food. This isn't Famine's only trick he has up his sleeve but I don't want to give any spoilers! Famine is doing his part in destroying the world but what has me guessing, is why it seems to be more severe in Independents. Some of the characters hinted that Independents is special to these Horseman and maybe Jimmy parents had something to do with the first horseman Plague. I don't know but I cannot wait until the 3rd installment hits amazon!!!
We get to read a lot more about Hunter and his part in this. I was interested in the changes he had to undergo to play his role in God's plan. I really appreciated the story and the lesson it teaches. Good job Ted. I also enjoyed Jimmy, what a twist, and that's all I can say about that.
I won his book in a Goodreads giveaway in exchange for an honest review. When I first started this book I didn't think I'd like it because it appeared to be a fantasy. But as I read it further, it seemed to be a Christian novel and although a fantasy it was a very interesting read. Hunter and Scout, along with Molly (Margaret), Barbie and Catherine battle Famine and grasshoppers while trying to save the children of Independents and the starving few of Cozad, that Hunter rescued. Hunter finds out he is immune from physical harm after several fights when he appeared to be severely injured but moments later all the wounds disappeared. The children band together and end up defeating Tommy the perv, better known as Famine and go on to plant food and try to get enough provisions for the coming winter and await the next coming apocalypse horseman-War. It seems like there might be another novel coming about their fight with War. Interesting story.
