I won this book on First Reads and as soon as it came in the mail I couldn't wait to start reading it.

Olivia "Billy" Evans lives in a world where vampires have come out of the dark and roam the earth. But what's worse, is that they are trying to control all types of government. When bitten, there is a ten percent chance that the person will survive the transformation, and once they do they will not only have to drink blood, but also kill one human every month or else they will starve. Olivia's dad is a scientist working to find a cure to stop the vampires' urge to kill humans and Olivia herself is trying to help other kids learn to shut out vampire influence as well.

The story was pretty interesting and there were things that I never saw coming which were very clever. But I had a problem about how fast paced the book was. We never got a chance to really build up the tension in a situation or anything like that because everything would fly by so fast. We never got the break we needed to fully mull things over in our minds. At the same time, we never really saw the main love interests, Olivia and Leighton, fall in love. They were just pushed together really fast and then we were told that they loved each other. These changes were just pushed on us and we didn't get to experience them or see them happening.

I was also hoping that we could've learned more about how the vampires came out, if we always knew that they were there, or whatever it was. I'm not sure if it just wasn't included or if it was mentioned in one of the earlier books. But we didn't even get much vampire action for most of the book, which was kind of disappointing.

My last problem with the book was how easy it was for the characters to get what they wanted. It just didn't feel very plausible that they could get away with pretty much anything.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention how shocked I was that we never saw or heard anything about Hitler since this is book is based during World War II. I think his name might have been mentioned once or twice but we never saw an appearance of him in person or on tv or the radio... All we got to see is Gunter with his, "Germans can't be controlled by vampires because we are so pure." speech *cue eye roll*. Some of the things that Gunter said made absolutely no sense but amused me to no end.

In short, I really liked the concept of the story but the execution of it was a little lacking to me. But if you like really face paced books than this might be the book for you.
