Nocturnos
“The night does not belong to us. She harbors her own mysteries.” Nocturnos delves into the ethereal world of the night, when the mundane vibes of the day cede to a mysterious atmosphere in which anything seems possible. In the twilight hours, the darkness feels vast and untamable, the dead can intrude upon the land of the living, and the distance between imagination and reality seems closer than ever.
Haunting narration connects a series of vignettes that capture glimpses of people’s lives as they navigate the nighttime. A traumatic collision while driving down a dimly lit road; a bedtime story that blurs the bounds of the imaginary, a walk through the woods that leads to strange symbols; this nighttime tour encompasses lush forests, dreamscapes, and the shadowy corners of private rooms. Along the way, these stories question the truths veiled in dreams, the nature of fear and loneliness, and the unknowable aura of the nocturnal world.
In Nocturnos, her most masterful work to date, Spanish comics artist Laura Pérez explores the magic and melancholy we encounter when dusk descends.

Congratulations for the Will Eisner Comic Industry Award for Best U.S. Edition of International Material (2026)!
“The night reveals, what the day conceals”--Charles Baudelaire, the epigraph for this book
Thanks to the author, Laura Perez, Fantagraphics Press, and NetGalley for the early look at the English language edition of Nocturnos (2019), released in October 2025.
I am a Laura Perez fan, having read, among other things, Totem and Ocultos in the past year. I like this one a lot, the tale mainly of a young woman, and also a young man.
“The night does not belong to us.” So this is a graphic novel or narrative essay on the nature of night and mystery. “But thanks to the darkness, we can see the stars,” she says, but this book largely is about other darknesses the darkness yields: Images of isolation; night walks and drives leading to road kill; Owls; things that go bump in the night; dreams.
Weird night-only images: A young woman looking at a cricket and then images of what the cricket sees; a woman with wings for eyebrows and a bird nose.
Abrupt shifts: One to an old man waking from a dream. . . is it this dream we have been visiting early on in the book? The night only knows.
Abrupt shift to a spider--Is this a new story or just more night creatures drifting in and out?
Vignette: A boy whispers what he says to his mom before he goes to sleep, so as not to wake the little girl (imaginary friend? ghost?) living there in his room.
Oh, you don't like the apparently random movement of the non-plot? Well, take a deep breath; you are living in night or dream logic!
Often Perez cannot help but turn her series of dream sequences and night visions into an essay about the night, which she also does in other works. Show, don’t tell, is my mantra here, Laura, but go your own way, fine! Maybe this can best be described as an illustrative--using vignettes and images to illustrate--meditation on the illusion of time passing, the difference between waking and dreaming, and death. Comics as poetry!

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
Nocturnos is a very thought-provoking graphic novel about dreaming that can take us on many journeys, allow us to fully be ourselves and gives thoughts as to even though we spend half our lives asleep/dreaming, we cannot comprehend so much about dreaming.
The illustrations are very captivating and really brought the emotions and thoughts I felt to the surfacereadingthis. I enjoyed the colour palet used and found it very befitting to the theme and messages of the book.

Laura Pérez is an incredible artist and a crap writer.
The pseudo-profound gibberish that is passed off as narration monologues at the start and end of the book are so overdone I expected either Rod Serling to pop up at the end to welcome me to The Twilight Zone or an Apple logo to appear and assure me the night-vision capabilities on the newest iPhone will change my life.
I eagerly await the day Pérez's striking artwork is deployed in support of a truly deserving story. Until then, we have musings, vignettes and dream sequences (damn them all to hell!) about the nature of night: a time of fear and loneliness, the domain of nature's wildest aspects, a bridge to the afterlife, blah, blah, blah . . .
So beautiful to look at, so banal to read.
(Best of 2025 Project: I'm reading all the graphic novels that made it onto one or more of these lists:
• Washington Post 10 Best Graphic Novels of 2025
• Publishers Weekly 2025 Graphic Novel Critics Poll
• NPR's Books We Love 2025: Favorite Comics and Graphic Novels
This book made the WaPo list.)

Nocturnos is a beautifully illustrated haunting graphic novel made of multiple vignettes that connect to explore the power of dreams.
I thought this book was beautifully done and unputdownable! The illustration are beautiful and Pérez does an amazing job of connecting the different stories together through a central them. I definitely recommend picking this up!
Thank you so much to the publisher and Edelweiss for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Pérez has a lovely and delicate mastery of color, and the images were nicely balanced and pleasant to look at. They were a little too simple to make up for the minimal and often banal prose and I didn't find myself lingering often to look at them (especially interiors...why are all the humans living in bare boxes of rooms?).
Forgettable, although I'd be happy to try something where someone else wrote the text and Pérez illustrated.

Maybe I just didnt "get" this book because I didnt really connect with the writing. Maybe it was the translation. Either way, the art style and vibes were really beautiful and eerie.

Zamiast ciągłej fabuły z klasycznym rozwinięciem i zwrotami akcji, dostajemy zbiór luźno powiązanych, wypływających z siebie w nieoczywisty sposób wątków, które łączy nocny anturaż i elementy nadprzyrodzone. Za taką interpretacją przemawiają jednak końcowe uwagi o iluzorycznej naturze czasu i przestrzeni, w której go odczuwamy.

Z knihy doslova tryská nádherná a neskutečná atmosféra.

An arresting portrayal of the night, Nocturnos explores all the ways that the night can feel - dark, intriguing, haunted, lonely, awe-inspiring, unknown, frightening, magical, dreamlike, mythological… Pérez reminds us that “the night does not belong to us.”
Told in short vignettes and featuring gorgeous evocative artwork, Nocturnos draws the reader through the page and directly into the night. If you’re skeptical about graphic novels, this could be the one that changes your mind.
Thank you to Fantagraphics Books, Laura Pérez, and NetGalley for this eARC. All opinions are my own.

(4.3) This multi-narrative story drifts between dreamscapes and reality, maintaining a deeply atmospheric tone throughout. It captures the absurd, frightening, and ominous qualities of dreams, while subtly reflecting how those same elements echo in the real world. The transitions between waking life and nighttime feel like a bridge—almost an alternate reality layered over our own. The artwork is stunning, with images of people at rest that feel both calming and quietly haunting.

This is not so much a story, but a series of unconnected vignettes exploring what happens to different people at night, and asking the question if reality happens when we are awake or when we dream.

“The night does not belong to us”
Speaking as a renowned night owl with existential tendencies, it was especially cathartic to see the thoughts in my head somehow demonstrated to me through simple, yet provoking illustrations. It’s drawn in a way that puts us in the observers seat, watching life play out in front of you and before you and after you. Who are you, anyway? I merely am.

**NetGalley ARC** (thank you!)
I found this one to be very lyrical and reflective in both writing and art style. I think that the night holds so much promise and mystery. The common thread woven throughout was that we do not own the night, even though we have tried mightily to conquer it. It got me thinking quite a bit and I always appreciate that.

Thank you for the NetGalley ARC.
I’m struggling to decide if this is a book I like or just find weirdly interesting for one read only.
*Not suggested for children due to trippy imagery/discussions about death and nude scene for sure*
On one hand the artwork illustrations are super cool!
On the other hand, what in the sleep paralysis nightmare is this book about? I mean, it’s not scary, it’s just sort of odd and eerie.

Perez brought the beauty in this one.
Nocturnos is beautiful to look at. The cover is particularly striking and I would get it in a heartbeat for a coffee table display. The story on the other hand, was lost to me. I don't think it was a translation issue; I think the story is meant to be vague and poetic, but that is just not my taste.
Pick up Nocturnos for the art and the vibes, babe. Leave the rest.

I think this book is very delicate, even though the predominant color is black. Usually, the night scares us, but this book shows you with its delicacy that there's nothing to be afraid of.
