As Maka and a team of DWMA students slip into Baba Yaga Castle in the guise of Arachnophobian guards, Black*Star opts for his usual style of loud and without a trace of subtlety! But although Black*Star doesn't seem to have changed much on the outside, inwardly he has at last found the way to harness the true power of the Uncanny Sword. And that means he's ready to test his blade in a round three rematch against swordsman Mifune! Will Black*Star's transformation be enough? Or will he once again find himself at the mercy of the great samurai?!
Atsushi Ōkubo ( 大久保篤), also romanized as Atsushi Ohkubo, is a Japanese manga author and fantasy artist known for his work on the manga series Soul Eater, which has been adapted into an anime. Okubo worked as an assistant under Rando Ayamine, on the manga series Get Backers. He also created artwork for various cards for the Lord of Vermillion game.
Atsushi Ōkubo was not a model student and was more attracted to drawing than to learning. At the age of 20, after finishing studies at a manga school where he met Rando Ayamine, the author of Get Backers, he became Rando Ayamine's assistant for two years. Finally, he won a competition at Square Enix's Gangan magazine with his first manga series B.Ichi and it was published for four volumes. After the end of his last manga, he created Soul Eater, still for Square Enix's Gangan magazine, which brought him worldwide success.
Don't mind me, I'm just casually re-reading the entire manga for the 5th time or so because A) it's one of my comfort series and I need all the comfort I can get right now, B) I own the entire thing physically so it's right there, and C) everyone is talking about fall/ Halloween reads and SE fits that to a T.
Gonna give all the volumes 5 stars as a default. There's plenty I could complain about if I wanted, namely the unnecessary fanservice/ weird sexualization of teen characters, but I'm not gonna do that right now. It pops up rarely enough that I can just pretend it doesn't exist.
I love the anime of this book. I love the characters and the humor and the amazing story.... that being said.... WHAT!?! My gosh I never saw this stuff coming and it is just awesome! I love Tsubaki and Black Star's new form. The drawing and artwork for them is just beautiful and I like how they got there better then the anime. Ox and Kim are just hilarious and so adorible. Then Kid and Free's battle with mosquito was great as mosquito kept changing forms. BUT the last like 5 or 6 pages were mind blowing with the showing of one hunky character and possible death of a beloved character.....
Soul Eater, Vol. 13 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next four chapters (49–52) of the on-going manga series.
Black Star begins to fight Mifune, and due to the training he had at Tsubaki Nakatsukasa's home, he is able to fully use Tsubaki's demon sword ability and fights Mifune evenly.
Meanwhile, inside the castle, Ox Ford battles Kim Diehl, and attempts to convince her of his devotion to her. He manages to overcome the morality machine by ripping off his own cherished hair spikes – a physical feature of his that Kim dislikes and relents by the move of this act.
Elsewhere, Death the Kid and Free encounter Mosquito, who transforms into his strongest form to fight both of them.
This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Atsushi Ōkubo. It centers mainly on the infiltration of Baba Yaga's castle – the headquarters for Arachnophobia. Outside, Black Star battles Mifune, however this time with her training their match is rather even. Inside, Ox Ford manages to convince Kim Diehl of his devotion to her and manages to override the Mortality Machine, which has lowered Kim Diehl's morality.
All in all, Soul Eater, Vol. 13 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.
I love Death the Kid. And Black Star. And Mifune. And like. So many others. But also; Why are all the characters so amazing? Literally all of them are interesting and make me want to continue reading (and reading faster, if possible).
Great! We follow our heroes into the depths of Arachniphobia's headquarters, as they attempt to shut down the Moral Manipulation machine. The manga definitely doesn't follow the anime, but it's much better, honestly. Ox, Kim and Jackie get much more face-time, and the character development is sensational. This volume starts Black Star's third battle with the sword master Mifune, and Ox and a brainwashed Kim fight...each other! The Ox<3Kim story is so sweet, and in the end we follow Kid as he battles side-by-side with the Wolfman, to defeat the could-he-just-fricking-die-already Mosquito!
I still have trouble trusting Medusa. I find her oddly fishy. I hope that Shibusen's students and teachers will not be fooled so easily. I can't wait to see what will happen in the next manga. I hope Maka will watch Medusa. I can't wait to see if Crona is in danger.
Volume 13 still finds us with the DWMA students trying to find there way to Arachne and defeat her. Black Star finds out what it means to be a warrior and goes up against Mifune (who I actually like a little). There fight scenes are epic and had me on the edge of my seat. The art did a great job of capturing their strengths and signature fighting styles. The next fight conclusion we see is Kim vs Ox. I was mostly annoyed with this one. I don't care for Kim so whether she lived or died didn't matter to me. And last but not least, Mosquito was just whipping everyone's ass and I loved it.
Mifune is still one of my favorite characters as I just love everything about him and I kind of wished he had a different rivals as I really am not a fan of Black Star granted he has changed a little but still a character I do not like. I did find Ox vs Kim to be interesting as while it does follow the usual cliche of fighting a brainwashed love interest and both Ox and Kim are not that well developed but still not a bad fight so far. But the real show was the Kid and Free vs Mosquito as the fight seems really cool so far and we even see Mosquito show off new forms that actually look cool.
This one was SO fast-paced because nearly every chapter is watching a different fight unfold, with only one wrapping up. I was on the edge of my seat flipping pages.
I don't really know how to describe this other than weird. There was no fan service for once which was better. The story didn't really make sense, but the art was good and the battle scenes were good.
There are some lovely passages in this volume: an interlude with Tsubaki and her father; a great confrontation between Ox and Kim. There's plenty of action too as Black Star (and Tsubaki) battles Mifune and Death The Kid (and Patty and Liz) takes on Mosquito. Good story, good art, good book.
Yes! We're finally seeing a divergence from the anime's plot. I'm not really the biggest fan of Black*Star, but it's cool to see him really start to shine. And even towards the end of this volume, we get a glimpse into what's going to be a great fight with Kid!
Oop. Soul has concerns (*ignored* 😭), Kid just died (anime-finale-core there), the others live, and Black Star is running a rampage (as per normal honestly) but after resolving the inner soul battle (so a now mega-rampage).
