Aliens, madmen, or horrors from beyond the stars – nothing will get in the way of my revenge.
My name is James Browning. Not long ago, I was a proud member of the 92nd Legion, the Star Ravagers. We were super-soldiers that defended humanity from aliens, heretics, and otherworldly threats. But a callous betrayal left my legion decimated, erased, and dishonored.
I thought I was doomed to spend the rest of my life on a distant penal colony. But when I suddenly find myself stranded in an alien space station, surrounded by the wrecks of lost spaceships, I know I have a chance at escape. But to do so I’ll need to defy the madness inflicted by the station, defeat hordes of man-eating aliens, and crush a cult of lunatics who worship a horrifying god. And after that... there's a galaxy of threats I must face.
But I’m not alone. During my journey I'll form a crew of beautiful, dangerous a brilliant engineer, a fragmented AI, a human-alien hybrid, a badass battle sister, and a cyborg assassin. But the danger we face is beyond mortal comprehension, a threat not just to us… but to the entire galaxy.
and I've read A LOT. I rarely write actual reviews, and I'm having trouble finding the words.
The plot is as original as I've read in years, and the worldbuilding is fantastic. It blends familiar themes and elements (and quite a few sly references for us Sci-Fi geeks) in a way that feels distinct despite its being a largely familiar grimdark setting. The action sequences are thrilling, the spicy scenes steamy as a banya, the character building and development give entirely real-feeling people. Each romantic bond is a unique and meaningful relationship between two complete individuals, broken as those people might be, finding a love uniquely their own. The overall story is a thoroughly compelling one, of both personal and universal significance, of a struggle against Eldritch and Orwellian horror- and the fight to make possible a world (galaxy) where people's lives and well-being matter, instead of their death and suffering feeding the elevation and power of an elite few.
There are a few (consistent, not random) vocabulary mistakes, generally between two similarly-spelled words, but they aren't enough to break immersion or detract from my enjoyment.
In closing: I'm going to buy this book, instead of just reading it once with Kindle Unlimited.
I just finished the book. It was one of those books that was hard to put down while reading. I really enjoy M.E. Thorne's writing style. It was a good deal for the amount of material here. The book takes place way in the future. Through wars and mismanagement the people of Earth have ruined this planet so that it can no longer support life. The person known as the Goddess has led to people to to the nearest star system Alpha Centauri, which is renamed Prime something. The Goddess was Martyred and the Saints rule in her stead. Go about two thousand years in the future and you arrive where the book starts. The main character is James Browning who is a Legionnaire, the Republic is constantly at war with anyone that it can fight it seems, so there are many Legions. James was a member of the 92nd Legion the Star Ravagers. They are betrayed, most executed and or made Thralls. A few like James are to be sent to a penal colony to rot. To travel great distances ships have to travel through sub-reality. It is in the sub-reality that the prison transport crashes on an alien spaceship. Luckily James survives. However the truths that he learns on that space station will change everything he knows about the Republic. He also gains powerful allies along the way.
This is more of a dark fantasy save-the-world-quest than a sci-fi adventure. This is the story of Legionnaire James, a warrior who lost everything he held dear, and now must gather a team to save the galaxy from dark evil gods - cuthullu space horrors - and their minions. The ods are overwhelmingly against him, but his plotarmor is even more enormous.
So he nearly dies a dozen times and by all accounts should have failed … but he didn’t.
The atmosphere is fairly dark and creepy. Most of the times the protagonist and his team are in one desperate situation or another. Personally I found the story too dramatic in the later half.
This is less about exploration and adventure and more about solving mystery, revealing the dark and terrifying truth and fighting against the
Those who are looking for a Star Trek kind of adventure are def. wrong here.
I finished this in a few days because I just couldn't stop. The characters were cool and interesting, but I think my favorite part was how terrifying the enemies were. The second book was my favorite because it had the least dread that the Outriders inspire that kinda choked the whole feel. In a good way.
This is one hell of a series. It is a long read that will keep you enthralled until you miss your bedtime. It took me three days to read it, I am disabled so I read a lot. It has highs and lows like real life and you can really connect to the storyline of you have an open mind. I loved it as it is great fantasy.
This series is very well written. I was sad that it ended honestly. This is a great read with quite a few words I had never seen before and am glad that my Kindle allows me to just tap on a word to get the definition. So I learned a few new words along the way too.
It took me a while to read it because for me this story is not as much science fiction as it is a weird mixture of horror and fantasy which is not my cup of tea. In my opinion too much of the story takes place in the world of dreams and or hallucinations making the story tedious, quite boring and difficult to follow.
Fantastic story containing well fleshed out characters! Outstanding adventure! Couldn't put the book down! Truly an enjoyable and well written book with a unique story line.
It was ok. The scifi elements were top notch. I am not a fan of harem literature so I found myself skipping a lot of the story. The ending was predictable but still good.
