Another Wednesday UF group hunting expedition with Beast!!!
I don't know how she does it! Faith Hunter has developed this series to a level where she really has to screw something badly in order for her books to get any rating lower than 4 from me. She knows how to keep us on our toes and this time we hit the ground running. Starting with a bang, Jane was in trouble almost from the first page and this time it was evil magic. This did not bode well for the plans for a peace treaty the Master Vampire of New Orleans was about to sign with the Covens of American Witches. Obviously someone is trying to sabotage the event and Jane has to make sure everyone is safe. Good thing she has a household full of allies to help her and make sure she is safe as well. Keeping Jane alive is more than a full time job and the brothers, the Bruiser, the witches and the vamps all earn their keep, having to drag her ass from the verge of almost dying all the time!!!
This was intense, I had no idea how they are going to get out alive, and this time around we actually got some answers for questions we have had since the beginning of the series. However, I wish those European Suckheads would get to New Orleans already! This has been hanging over our heads for the last several books and I really hope it lives up to its own hype when it finally arrives...
So, since I can't give away any of the plot, I am going to leave it at how much I actually laughed this time around. Loved the humor, which balanced the creepy, murdery parts of the story perfectly. Beast is still the best character in the series and Angie baby terrifies the heck out of me with her magical potential. I hope that the wolf and it's Grindelo get more page time next time around ☺☺☺!

I'm writing an early review so will be careful just how much I say. This the tenth book sees Jane moving on with her life and finally giving George aka Bruiser a chance. I'm not sure that she's ready for the l word but she is trying to heal from past hurts and the feelings of mistrust. Now this wouldn't be a Jane Yellowrock book if the suspense and action didn't drive it and boy is this such an intense ride.
Jane is still an Enforcer working for Master of the City Leo but as this story begins there's a huge logistical and security challenge. The Witches have agreed to parley with the Vampires but you just know that not everyone wants agreement and peace. To add even more pressure a powerful spell manages to get into Janes home leaving something behind that's not exactly tangible but proves to be deadly. First things first protect Leo, second track down the source of the magical attack and when that happens long dead ( or undead) secrets come to light. Just who is targeting Jane and how does it all tie in with the Witch Conclave?
O I do love this series and urge other readers to get on board and please read in order. This series is fabulous urban fantasy that unbelievably just keeps getting even wilder. So much has changed since the beginning and yes Jane and her Beast are as protective as ever but it's wonderful seeing her inner circle grow as a family truly is formed. That obviously makes her worry but these guys have got each other's backs. I know many readers want more of a settled romantic life for Jane but it's clear to this reader that the author much prefers tying her characters up in knots. This makes for a non stop thrilling ride that has you guessing with predators stalking prey and then leaves you breathless! Yes sometimes even Jane can become prey. Oh it's not all blood and magic because our snarky heroine is right on form and if anyone can put down uber arrogant and selfish Leo it's Jane. Tension rockets and then bam the comments out of Janes mouth are sheer comic genius. I guess it's all about timing and this author has it down pat. Trust me when it kicks off you will not want to put this book down.

This is one of the creepier Jane books, I say that because Jane is seeing magical eyes in people’s hands and I don’t know about you but I totally find that completely creeptastic, in an I’m watching you kind of way.
I liked this book more than most of the books of this series because there was a lot of action happening all the time. Plus Molly and Evan come to town with the kids and Angelina is probably equal parts adorable and scary all at the same time. The developments with her character in this lead me to think that she is going to be a holy terror sooner rather than later. I’m hoping that she will be firmly on our side though and just terrorize the enemy.
There is some crazy magic rolling around in this one and it wasn’t the same old same old villain Jane is up against. It seems there is a witch in the mix that is causing a bit of havoc and looking to disrupt the upcoming conclave.
Edward is the shining star in this one though. I like that vampire a lot and can’t wait to find out the reasons he ‘let’ someone win a blood challenge and take over the clan he was running. Because there is no way that didn’t happen without his willingness to give up his position to enter Leo’s service. There are reasons and I want to know them all.
I do have a few gripes though. I sometimes struggle with this series as the flow of it is sometimes a bit jumpy. One minute Jane is walking into a room, then someone she knows is attacking her for no apparent reason, then she is on the verge of death and Bruiser is carrying her to go to the rocks to shift then she is at Aggie One Feathers and Eli is there but I have no idea where Bruiser is. It just seems strange to me that Eli gets to make all of the Jane is dying what should we do calls and Bruiser gets kicked outside. I get that they have said “I love you” yet BUT….it is pretty much implied and he told her he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her so I’m thinking he gets to be the primary in death situations. Just saying
Also…how many books do we need to go through since mentioning the European Vamps. FH has been dangling that carrot for a while now and I’ve heard that book 11 they still haven’t shown up either. There is only so long that I’ll wait for said Vamps to show up before I get pissed that she hasn’t capitalized on that arc yet. If it doesn’t happen in book 12 I’m probably completely done with the series.
Overall if you have made it to book 10 then you know what you are getting with this series and this book is much better than all of the early ones in the series. I love Jane and Bruiser together as a team and how he is protective of her, but also gives her space to do her job. He seems to get who Jane is better than anyone else ever has. I’m still not sure what to do with Leo but I’m sure that will have to be addressed sometime in the future.
Looking forward to getting to the end of the completely books of this series.

Jane once again is caught up in a magical mystery. There has been random magical attacks made against Jane’s household and spells placed on powerful allies that cause them to randomly attack. Jane and her crew must unravel the mysterious magic users plot before their plans come to fruition.
Meanwhile, a master that has assumed dead is found tortured and barely alive. Who is behind the master’s entrapment?
Once again, we are provided with a meaty mystery that you can really sink your teeth into. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not all mystery. There is a lot of action, a healthy layer of romantic heat and plenty interaction with the family of main players we’ve come to love.
If Faith Hunter writes it, I’ll be reading it. It really is that simple. She writes complex characters that grow and evolve. She builds amazing worlds where the fantasy becomes reality and vampires, magic and mayhem live alongside the cities and places you know. She is a brilliant writer with a magical pen, that is my take and I’m sticking to it.
Ten full length novels and this series is still going strong.

I almost gave this book 3 stars because that was probably my enjoyment level. However when stacked against other 3 star books, this one is far superior. This was never one of my favorite series. However, I enjoy the Native American aspect and some of the side characters. Our h has grown a lot and becoming more of a character I like. As much as I hate the author for butchering my Rickybo into someone I can't like, I'm glad our h has a steady guy now. Anyway, I will keep listening to this series.

Book #10 in the series
Jane Yellowrock is the Enforcer for New Orleans under Master Leo. Witches and vampires are talking about possible peace but there are always malcontents and Jane is the one to fester them out. The witches are early and mysterious. leaving something to ponder in their wake. There is a long dead master vamp that isn't as dead as everyone thought. Jane is up to her neck once again, but she does it well with snarls and snark.
Jane's romantic life has been rough, but she is on the mend and moving on. She is feeling some love again and it is with my favorite character. (yeh !)
I loved this book. I do love the series, I love the characters, they are flawed, funny and dangerous. They all continue to grow with each book. Now, where is the next book ?

2022 Re-Read
A good, fast hit of urban fantasy entertainment! The action picks up right away and hail, hail, the gang's all here. The Trueblood family and cat are in town for the vampire/witch conclave. The Youngers have scooched over to make room for them in the house. Edmund, one of Jane's favourite vampires, has moved in too, as Leo has pretty much insisted that Jane take him on as her Primo. And he comes with accessories, namely the enormous werewolf, Brute, and the wolf's grindylow. There's not much elbow room at Jane's house these days. She's thanking the stars that she can escape to Bruiser's occasionally.
Hunter has created an intricate world and takes full advantage of her previously established details to give a really edge-of-the-seat ride. She mixes witch magic, vampire politics, and one of my favourite skinwalkers to produce a fast paced, dangerous adventure. Edmund is the star of the show among Jane's household. This guy is smart and sneaky and he's been plotting to become Jane's Primo for a couple of books now. This is a vampire who used to be a blood master and we are given to believe that he allowed himself to be bested by a weaker vamp, presumably to slither his way to better things. Just what his plans are will be most interesting. (Although I remember really liking his character on my first read through, the fine detail is gone, so I get to enjoy the discoveries all over again.)
I really should have held onto this book for a little while and tended to books with closer due dates, but when I picked it up at the library this afternoon I found it irresistible. I can't say I'm sorry to have slipped my leash.

Every time I pick up another book in this series, I remember all the things that make it awesome. From the amazing characters, to the fantastic world-building… to the dense storytelling and non-stop action… I didn’t want to put it down. It was a great ride from beginning to end.
The story centers around Jane’s efforts to prepare for the big meeting between the vampires and witches. That would be bad enough, but something –or someone– is targeting Jane with magic. What seems at first just a scan, turns into an external force that’s affecting her abilities and invading her soul home. And the insidious magic is spreading, manifesting differently in different allies, leaving Jane no clear idea what its endgame is, or how to get rid of it.
I love Jane as a character. She is so smart and tactical, so strong, vulnerable, and loyal. And this book expands on the family theme of the last one. This woman who has always been a loner has created a family that is now bursting at the seams. Her circle with Youngers and the Truebloods has expanded to include Edmund, Brute, the grindylow, and of course, Bruiser. It shows just how big her heart is, and it’s so gratifying that she is now surrounded by people who love her as much as she loves them.
The mystery is engaging. It plays in so well with what’s going on with the big meeting and the discovery of a long lost vampire. Even better, it all ties in to an even larger story with roots in earlier books of the series. It’s always such a treat when that happens. You can see the layers built on layers. And it all serves as a foundation for these amazing action scenes. Jane is pushing her limits so hard, it’s a wonder she is still alive. Yet she keeps putting herself on the line, both to do her duty and protect those who matter to her.
I like the addition of Edmund and I am curious about his past and his new role in Jane’s life. I am, however, quite wary of his seeming connection to Angie Baby. I felt like there were hints that something would happen with them down the road. Maybe I am reading too much into it. But I will say now that the squick factor would beyond my ability to set aside if there were a spinoff series where she grows up and he’s a love interest. I’m just saying that now.
That aside (and I really am not going to keep thinking about it) –this book kicks butt. I really enjoyed everything about it. And I am digging the relationship with Bruiser every bit as much as I hoped I would. I’m really interested to see how Jane’s physical issues move forward in the next book –and what happens when the European vampires come.
Such a great series.

Every time I pick up another book in this series, I remember all the things that make it awesome. From the amazing characters, to the fantastic world-building… to the dense storytelling and non-stop action… I didn’t want to put it down. It was a great ride from beginning to end.
The story centers around Jane’s efforts to prepare for the big meeting between the vampires and witches. That would be bad enough, but something –or someone– is targeting Jane with magic. What seems at first just a scan, turns into an external force that’s affecting her abilities and invading her soul home. And the insidious magic is spreading, manifesting differently in different allies, leaving Jane no clear idea what its endgame is, or how to get rid of it.
I love Jane as a character. She is so smart and tactical, so strong, vulnerable, and loyal. And this book expands on the family theme of the last one. This woman who has always been a loner has created a family that is now bursting at the seams. Her circle with Youngers and the Truebloods has expanded to include Edmund, Brute, the grindylow, and of course, Bruiser. It shows just how big her heart is, and it’s so gratifying that she is now surrounded by people who love her as much as she loves them.
The mystery is engaging. It plays in so well with what’s going on with the big meeting and the discovery of a long lost vampire. Even better, it all ties in to an even larger story with roots in earlier books of the series. It’s always such a treat when that happens. You can see the layers built on layers. And it all serves as a foundation for these amazing action scenes. Jane is pushing her limits so hard, it’s a wonder she is still alive. Yet she keeps putting herself on the line, both to do her duty and protect those who matter to her.
I like the addition of Edmund and I am curious about his past and his new role in Jane’s life. I am, however, quite wary of his seeming connection to Angie Baby. I felt like there were hints that something would happen with them down the road. Maybe I am reading too much into it. But I will say now that the squick factor would beyond my ability to set aside if there were a spinoff series where she grows up and he’s a love interest. I’m just saying that now.
That aside (and I really am not going to keep thinking about it) –this book kicks butt. I really enjoyed everything about it. And I am digging the relationship with Bruiser every bit as much as I hoped I would. I’m really interested to see how Jane’s physical issues move forward in the next book –and what happens when the European vampires come.

The action starts immediately in Shadow Rites, book #10 of the Jane Yellowrock series. A magical attack on her house throws Jane into high gear as she tries to find and fight the two witches who are responsible before the Witch Conclave happens to avoid it turning into a major disaster. Jane has fought magic users before; however; it seems that a lot of residual magic has built up in her body causing some issues. So this fun new complication related to all the whammies Jane has sustained from previous encounters with supernatural spells adds new challenges to Jane’s abilities.
When Jane Yellowrock lets fly with some cuss words, you know things are getting dire. One of the enemy witches has been drinking a lot of powerful vampire blood which is a Bad Thing. Jane meets one of her toughest challenges with the witch in question, and her mother, who are trying to sabotage the Witch Conclave where they are about to reach an accord with Leo. This is essential before the Euro vamps show up since it is likely they will try a takeover of Leo’s territory. The two uber powerful witches keep causing havoc for Jane and her security crews as well as Leo and his vamps. Jane has a houseful of help when Molly and Evan show up with their own scarily powerful daughter, Angie, and little Evan. It will take all of them to prevent an all-out war from happening because if Leo goes down, Jane knows things will be bleak once the Europeans finally arrive.
One thing you have to say for Leo, he is consistent. As in he consistently goes after “my Jane” with his “vamp hunting purr that made Beast sit up and purr back.” He speaks to her with pointed innuendo while always trying to seduce Jane into his bed: “You make the chase so delightful.” Leo continues to be a very political animal with multiple levels of plots and devious schemes to keep his power and gain more that are so complex, he could be Machiavelli’s number one student. One such plot seems to be attaching Ed Hartley to Jane in a magically bound way which of course seriously steams her.
As for George Dumas, aka Bruiser and Jane’s “sweetie pie,” their story is still developing as she notes, “we were still figuring out what kind of relationship we had,” so while they get to spend time together in between all the major crises drama, it’s not a focal point of the story because so much is going on as the bad witches always seem to be one step ahead of all Jane is doing to find them and bring them down. Such is the nature of Urban Fantasy though; more action, less love story. I think Jane cares a lot for Bruiser, but that player Ricky Bo really broke her heart so she is hesitant to be that vulnerable again. I have high hopes for them as Jane and Bruiser’s relationship continues to grow and they works well together in this story on both sides of the sheets.
For anyone this far into the series, you should know by now that where Jane goes, trouble follows or in her case, attacks with a vengeance. The pace is fast and furious as Jane and her crew deal with all witches, lethal and otherwise, and vampires as well as Jane’s own magical issues. Credit goes to Faith Hunter for keeping this series fresh and exciting; her fans will be well satisfied.

Once again I find myself enjoying a book but trying to figure out if it was really 5 Star materiel or not. I LOVE this series and Jane may be the most seriously scary heroine in the genre but while Dark Heir left me breathless, this one was not up to that level it seemed to me.
This book while action oriented as all the books in this series are, concentrated a bit more on the interpersonal relationships between all the people in Jane's life more than past novels. While this really was something that was needed and adds depth to the series, it kind of gave the book a bit of a "filler until the European Vamps get here" vibe.
Here is the thing, Jane is much more than a killing machine, we have not really stopped very long to catch our breath and take a look at the person this series is about and how her mind works. While the LAST thing I want in this series is a heroine that questions every death or person she must kill, you have to get inside her head a bit to make her a real person and not a caricature of herself.
The other thing that left me a bit more unsettled were the number of unanswered questions, when the book ended I still had several "What about X" type questions. I don't usually finish a book and feel like I need to read it again because I have this feeling I must have missed something but that is where I am today.
In the random things, I am starting to like Leo a bit more but not sure you could ever trust him (which left me with another question I did not get answered) :)
Bottom Line: This is Jane Yellowrock, understand that the worst book in this series is better than the best book in 80% of the series being written in this genre so flavor this review in that light. In comparing the series to itself and other top shelf series, this one comes up just a bit short since almost all the others were easy 5 Star and this one just did not have that WOW factor I expected. Understand also that this is book #10 in a long running series and as such there needs to be change or it loses it appeal so Jane is growing/changing, her "family" is growing and we know a lot more about her than we ever did but the fact remains that we have been waiting for the European Vamps for 2 books now and that adds to the "running in place" feeling. Additionally, I should mention that my "revenge junkie" was not satisfied. 4.5 Stars and maybe for some it will be more but in my case I rounded down to 4 Stars on this one.

Buddy read with the Wednesday UF Group. Or maybe I should say Thursday since lately we've been starting late. *snarls Beast-like* Stupid real life.
Jane Yellowrock is one of those series that slowly grows on you and gets better with time. There's an improvement of both plot and characters throughout the series (with a couple of slower and generally lower quality books here and there) and it nicely prepares the reader for this instalment. Shadow Rites starts with a bang and from the very first encounter with the big bad uglies of this book< I knew that things will be bad for our little (well not so little anymore) family.
There were a lot of great moments plot-wise. Some things that should have been said ages ago were finally verbalized, Jane was forced to face some of her inner demons and some untied loose ends from the very beginning of the series were finally given a proper end. One of my personal favourites was I seriously doubt he will change his ways because of that but hey I can hope right. I've grown attached to the suckhead. Even though I still want to kill him most of the time. Another thing that made me love this book was Molly and more specifically the fact that she finally started acting like the best friend she claims to be.
As usually the humour was great and the banter between Eli and Jane nicely counteracted the darker tones of the events. The addition of Edmund to promises a hell of a lot of fun. He's snarky and quite capable of handling jane's cat-like ways. I just want to know why he chose to throw away his status as a Blood Master. Because let's face it he totally wanted to end up where he is now. And the fangheads are excellent long term strategists.
Shadow Rites tied up one of the major overall plotlines of the series - the ongoing "war" between the vamps and the witches in the USA. And just in time to be able to help each other survive the coming of the European vamps. Hopefully we won't have to wait another ten books for those bloodsuckers to finally arrive.

The Jane Yellowrock series by Faith Hunter is one of those rare series where each book is better than the last. Shadow Rites starts out immediately with action. The witches are back in this one with some new ones stirring up a lot of trouble. Jane has a lot on her hands with getting ready for the European Vampire visit and she doesn't need the added stress of evil witches casting deadly spells but that's what she gets. I think Jane is finally getting used to the fact that she now has family, a lot of family, but it also gives her more people to protect and worry about. As Jane stays busy tracking down the evil witches she also has to deal with a spell that's been cast on her and repercussions of that spell on others. I liked that Brute and the Grindylow are back in this one, they are two of my favorite characters and always interesting. We also get some romance with Bruiser who has been my favorite since the first limo ride, and we even get to revisit that limo ride. The book holds at a steady pace all the way through with Jane trying to figure out what the witches are up to and exactly what she needs to do to stop them. The ending was so exciting that I found myself holding my breath at times. Jane is put through a lot but she also learns a lot about herself and the people she cares about the most. I know I just finished this one but I already can't wait for the next Jane Yellowrock book. I received this as an advanced readers copy through Netgalley and ROC.

5 Stars... My head is still spinning from all that occurs in this book... Peace between the witches and vampires is never more important, but not all are supporting this new détente... The past comes roaring back to the present with powerful magic set to destroy the fragile balance between these two forces... As usual, Jane Yellowrock and her makeshift family are in the center of the chaos and find themselves attempting to unravel the complex nature of the attacks and the intertwining relationships that are at the root... Amongst this complicated and dynamic storyline, is the undertone of Jane's journey towards self acceptance, forgiveness, and family culminating into some intense emotional revelations and poignant moments; however, the presence of snarky humor allows for moments of levity and connection with the characters... A brilliantly spun tale of supernatural complexity; a truly compelling series:)

At A Glance
So much black magic and brink of death scenes. Loved!
The Good
How many ways can I say that I love the kits? Angie Baby and Little Evan are my favorite characters. So freaking creepy and cute at the same time. Angie Baby scares the crap out of me but how can you ever look at that angel face and not love her? Too much power for a little girl you say, bah!! So she makes you go to sleep with a simple thought. Who cares? So she can take out every witch, vampire, and supernatural creature around by snapping her fingers. That's talent, not horrifying at all. The whole thing is so "It's a good thing you did, Billy." (If you loved the old The Twilight Zone show, you'll understand). It seriously makes the book for me. Then Little Evan has become Angie's mini me and it was just perfect
Jane has a rough go in Shadow Rites. I lost count on how many times Jane almost dies. Sure kept things interesting. But she definitely learns a lot about herself; the good, the bad, and the ugly. Shadow Rites is eye-opening for Jane in that she actually has a family now whether she likes it or not. And the clan grows quite a lot in this book. I am so excited for Jane. It makes my heart swell to see her finally getting a little bit of happiness, even if it's a bit forced on her for her own good.
The bad guys and their evil plot was super complicated so I won't even try to explain it but it was awesomely dramatic and action-packed. Lots of black magic that Jane finds difficult to fight against. I'm a little worried for Jane and the wonky things happening to her. Not a good position to be in as the European vampires arrival comes closer. But Jane and her clan will figure something out, they always do.
The Bad
The only thing that sucks was this was a filler book. Very little progression in the overall story arc. We are still waiting for the European vamps to visit and stir some shit up. Been waiting for that to happen for forever. I don't like dragged out plotlines.
The Snuggly
We get some nice bow chicka wow wow from Bruiser and Jane but the scenes cut away pretty fast so no yummy detail.
Final Thoughts
Shadow Rites is more about Jane's family growing and it worked for me overall. I love all the characters and their uniqueness. The story had enough action to keep things interesting as well. Highly recommended.

SHADOW RITES is a magical, explosive, action packed ride. In each book Jane grows as a character and in power. Jane and Eli are busy getting ready for the European Mithran to come to town. Now they have another threat in New Orleans. Somebody is using magic against Jane and the rest of the Vampires. During the search for this witch, they find the vampire, Ming Zoya of Mearkanis, who they thought was dead. During this search, Jane is knocked unconscious twice by magical items. Jane might have to give her life to catch this witch. In this story we get the same Beast snark as all the rest. We also get more of the Truebloods and Angie baby. It’s do or die time for Jane. She must find out who is doing this, before she dies trying. I love Jane and Beast. You are always in for a wild, entertaining ride, when you read a Faith Hunter book. I really enjoyed SHADOW RITES and I give it 5/5 stars.

Having watched Jane change over 10 books from a loner to embracing a few friends than over time adding a few more people into her circle of trusted companions to now owning her own home, running a business with her partners, expanding her job with the MOC Leo to include taking on other responsibilities that has translated into more people depending on her than she ever dreamed of when she first came to New Orleans with only her trusty Harley Bitsa and a few personal belongings.
The Arcane and the physical are combined to create one of the more complicated threats to Jane yet and kept a fairly swift pace reading about one of my favorite urban fantasy characters. I slowed down and savored the last of the book but it was hard where Jane Yellowrock is concerned as she captures me in a way that makes it hard to stop reading her adventures once I start.
Poor Jane, her cup and house overfloweth! The growing circle of family and friends may have Jane in a panic but it also has her happier than she has ever been so it is a good trade/balance for her new life in NOLA.
Suffice to say Shadow Rites was one of my all-time favorite installments in the series and that is saying a lot when have loved Jane since day one, she has not only grown as a woman but fully embraced her Shiftwalker powers while amping up her game as a security specialist as well!

My Thoughts
Having watched Jane change over 10 books from a loner to embracing a few friends than over time adding a few more people into her circle of trusted companions to now owning her own home, running a business with her partners, expanding her job with the MOC Leo to include taking on other responsibilities that has translated into more people depending on her than she ever dreamed of when she first came to New Orleans with only her trusty Harley Bitsa and a few personal belongings.
The Arcane and the physical are combined to create one of the more complicated threats to Jane yet and kept a fairly swift pace reading about one of my favorite urban fantasy characters. I slowed down and savored the last of the book but it was hard where Jane Yellowrock is concerned as she captures me in a way that makes it hard to stop reading her adventures once I start.
Poor Jane, her cup and house overfloweth! The growing circle of family and friends may have Jane in a panic but it also has her happier than she has ever been so it is a good trade/balance for her new life in NOLA.
Suffice to say Shadow Rites was one of my all-time favorite installments in the series and that is saying a lot when have loved Jane since day one, she has not only grown as a woman but fully embraced her Shiftwalker powers while amping up her game as a security specialist as well!

5 Stars. I know it's only January but I foresee Shadow Rites as being a 2016 favorite pick. Outstanding. Full review to follow closer to the release date.
The Jane Yellowrock Series is in my top 5 of all Urban Fantasy!! It's also one of the top series I recommend to everyone.
What I liked: Well, absolutely everything! I loved this series from the very beginning but Ms Hunter has made it better and better with each new book/novella. This series has so much going on in each installment but, Jane/Beast is one of the best developed characters I've ever read. And the good part, she's still growing, still learning, and is totally badass.
Each and every character plays an intergral part. You can't forgot about one character because if you do, that character might come back to bite you in the butt. As much as Ms Hunter has revealed about each character so far, I find myself thinking, she's only let us see so much of each one. There is a depth to the characters and the mystery surrounding each one makes the book just that much better than the next.
In Shadow Rites, many of our favorite characters are front and center and of course, when that happens, the mayhem expected will be off the charts. I'm so very glad Bruiser has evolved as much as he has so he and Jane can go their own way without too much interference from Leo. Well, Leo will always be interfering but he can't compel Bruiser as much as he used to which made it much easier for me to deal.
While Shadow Rites has a beginning and an ending, there are so many questions and situations brought up that I'm hopeful of many, many more books in this series. Believe me, when you're done reading it, you'll think "what a great book" and then realize, Ms Hunter has opened up a plethora of possibilities with several of the characters and some of the questions surrounding them.
A couple of blogger friends and I were talking about how hard/easy it is to write certain reviews. I said it was easier to write top reviews and now I'm eating my words. I can't do Shadow Rites justice in a review. I don't have the magical words to tell you how much I loved this book. What I can say is, it kept me up way past my normal bed time, I wished others had read it at the same time I did so we could talk about it and I couldn't easily put the book down and walk away. I wanted to analyze every little tidbit. See, totally obsessed.
What I didn't like: Huh, am I supposed to write something here? Yeah, I loved it all!
You know how I always have something to say on the pricing of some books....well, not in this case. As a matter of fact, if Shadow Rites was in hardcover, I would buy it. The Kindle pricing is definitely worth it at $7.99 and I also have it in audio book. I don't often buy a book across all the different ways it's published but I will with the series!!
I was provided an ARC through NetGalley for a fair and honest review. (And yet, I still ordered my own Kindle version).

This was a great addition to the Jane Yellowrock series. Jane is doing pretty well and growing her business with the Younger brothers. Things are going good between Jane and Bruiser...their relationship isn't forefront to the story but it's in there enough to let you know that things are proceeding well between them. Thankfully, although there's a brief phone convo with him, Rick doesn't show up in this book (and good riddance!).
Jane is very busy trying to get things prepared for a conclave between the witches and the local vampires while also planning things for the upcoming visit of the European vampires. Just when Jane already thought she was busy enough, they find a vampire chained in a pit with 2 dead humans and Leo tasks Jane with investigating how this happened. Molly and her family come to town to stay with Jane while attending the conclave which just makes things more interesting. Admittedly, Molly being around ends up being helpful when it appears that some rogue witches are targeting Jane and possibly the vampires and the conclave and Jane is faced with fighting magic. As usual, there's a lot going on and Jane has to hurry to figure everything out before people get hurt. Jane succeeds and they get through the conclave alright and ready for the next set of hurdles coming their way.
I greatly enjoyed this story. While I've always loved this series, there have been some books that I've liked better than others. This book I particularly liked...it had lots going on that helped me keep interested in the story but threw in some light hearted parts so the drama didn't get to be too much. I have to say I loved Beast's internal comments to Jane...I literally laughed out loud over Beast wanting to hunt a cow in Edmund's sports car. Overall, I thought this was a great story which I would recommend (along with the whole series).

This was a well done continuation of the Jane Yellowrock series. I enjoyed most of the book, although at times all the strange different magical energies Jane is dealing is getting to be a bit too much (just confusing and nothing ever seems to be resolved...just added to).
This book is mainly about the witches and vampires in New Orleans coming to some sort of accord. It was a good read, but also a bit long at times. I think the pacing was a bit off and the story covered a very short time frame which made it feel even longer.
Jane has come a long way in this series; she has a family of sorts now and has learned to accept assistance when she needs to. Her and Bruiser continue to have a stable relationship as well. I am curious to see how all her magical issues will change her over the next couple books. Eli and the Kid are an integral part of the story as well and I really continue to enjoy them.
Things are getting a bit too magically ambiguous in this series, some of the things are getting a bit hard to follow and you have to read very carefully to keep it all straight. Jane is now dealing with black energies, red energies, green energies, and blue energies in her soul home and I hope some of this is resolved soon. Even with that complaint I do continue to enjoy these books, just not as much as earlier books in this series.
Overall a good book in the Jane Yellowrock series. I continue to enjoy the characters a lot and enjoyed the progress made between the vampire/witch interactions. I thought parts of the story were a bit slow and also felt like all the magical energy stuff is getting a bit over-complicated and hard to follow. I would definitely recommend this series to fans of action-packed urban fantasy; this is a solid series that is flagging a bit but has remained consistently good throughout.

I love the Jane Yellowrock series and Faith Hunter is an awesome person. I love Eli. He is the bestest brother. EVER. I enjoy Jane’s ability to piss off Leo and when she orders him around. Just saying.
The last few books I kept thinking we would see the European vampires and waiting for it. Instead, Jane is learning and growing. She needed this time, and so did Leo, to make more and better preparations. This book is a step forward in their readiness. It was very hard work to accomplish, though.
Many of my favorite characters are here and there is plenty of action and adventure. The bad guys are really BAD. They are evil with a side of crazy. Really, more like a second entrée of insane. Jane has much experience with that type but this is different and provides some new lessons.
There are some loose ends which I’m going to worry over until the next story. They involve Angie Baby, Gee, Ming and Gregoire. I hope we will see more of the Trueblood / Everhart clan but it might be best for them if they were in North Carolina when the European vampires visit.
Edmund has quite a role and it is a bit shocking. Vampires are quite the long-term and strategic planners. This theme is recurring in Shadow Rites. One key component of learning is repetition after all (my learning in this case).
I don’t know if the next book will be the European vampires arrival or not. I’m fine with it either way since there is plenty happening without them. Do read this as part of the series, both because you need the whole story and because it’s fantastic reading. Do also read the short stories, especially Bound No More as it has ramifications here.

Hello Bruiser and Jane! It’s been far too long! Shadow Rites picks up shortly after the last book and doesn’t come to play nicely. Jane and Beast are still rattled from their electrifying jolt , and are having issues reconnecting. But, in true style, the bad guys aren’t going to wait for her to be 100% before knocking on her door like demented girl scouts trying to sell poisoned cookies. Jane and company are about to face some evil of a far greater level than they could have ever expected, her mysterious attackers put everyone she loves dear into the crosshairs.
As you all now, I can’t spoil much for you since I received such an early ARC, but I will say this is by far one of the best books of the series. Shadow Rites pulls at your heartstrings and gives you chills all at the same time. There are far more dangerous foes lingering on the horizon and Jane is preparing for the war to end all wars. Shadow Rites tiptoes the line on being the big game changer novel with what’s forthcoming. Beast and Jane are learning more and more about their new powers and position in the world. She must embrace everything in order to survive.
Be prepared for this ending. Dark days are ahead, and I’m not sure if we as readers are ready to face the foes that lie before us.

The first book in the jane yellowrock series I have given a 3 star for a long time. After all the hype and expectation, this book was a major disappointment. Oh the plot was brilliant though inane and not what the readers had expected or wanted. At this point I won't give any spoilers but you'll see for yourselves what I mean. This book was just a filler for whats to come next, a kind of pause between the hot and heavy action that occured in the preceding book and the figurative shit that is about to hit the fan. Book 11 will be something I am looking forward to now, knowing that all the action missing in this book is about to happen in the sequel.

I love this series, and I get some serious heart pit patter every time I read a YS story (too much adrenaline :D). But I have a couple of nits:
-The bad guys are so over the top to be unbelievable (even in a UF. How can they be so strong? So intelligent? So prepared?). They are unbeatable. And Jane didn't particularly come out as brilliant here. You (I) got the idea it was pure luck if she won. Not exactly a glowing endorsement.
- The ending is a bit lame.

Strange magic invades deep into Jane, disturbing her relationship with Beast and sometimes paralyzing her. This book is all about the complexity of witch magic and its effects, especially on consciousness, and at times it got very hard for me to follow, let alone keep straight.
It appears that renegade or rogue witches are trying to subvert a conclave of witch covens from all over the country (and farther wide?) at which Leo, master vampire of New Orleans and the Southeast (except Florida) intends to secure a pact between the covens and the vampires. So very powerful and very sneaky magic is being wielded against Leo and his people, especially Jane.
Jane's best friend Molly, Molly's husband Evan (secretly a double witch), and Molly's magically powerful daughter Angie Baby come to New Orleans for the conclave and have key roles in this story, and it was very good to revisit them. Edmund is assigned to Jane as her primo, whether she likes it or not, and that puts him in a key role too. As usual, Eli, Alex (the Kid), and Bruiser help Jane all they can and even so it is often doubtful that Jane and others will get out alive, much less bring off the conclave and the pact.
We know from several previous books that Jane's lover Bruiser is an Onorio, and at last I learned a little more about them:

And he treats us to an account of his peculiar magic that left me mystified about just what an Anzu is.
