I really enjoyed Gerald Graham's book. I just completed his graduate course on-line through Wichita University and the book was the basis of the course. I learned a lot about how we think leaders should behave and how they most effectively behave. For example, it's best to strive to effectively complete the mission over how we treat our staff. Sometimes we try to hard to treat our staff well despite the fact that they are not performing thus impacting the ability to meet the objectives/mission. The result is morale goes down despite the focus on the staff. Also, there is an industry around driving change in organizations under the presumption that people don't like change. Graham's debunks that contention, which changes the way organizations deal with and invest in change.
Good book and it's recommended to compare and contrast the books content and leadership assessments while watching the movie Twelve O'Clock High.
I read it for one of my first management classes. It was a great read and brought many points up that I never considered. It changed the way I view leadership and provided solid advice and evidence for making leadership decisions. I appreciate the knowledge gained from the book and will no doubt use many of the points throughout my career.
If you are interested in learning about leadership from a middle management perspective, this book is PERFECT for you.
If you're interested in leadership qualities as an employee, this book is also taylored to you.
If you are interested in learning about how to manage teams and/or be an effective leader, this book will provide great information.
Like I said before, it's tayolored toward middle management but there are many great points you can take home to use in your everyday work life.
My grandfather has exhibited a wealth of knowledge acquired through decades of hard, honest work. Communicating with people transparently and detailing expectations in clarity to instill the confidence needed to achieve the given mission of a company or team.
He has been an influential mentor in my life from the time I entered this world and has repeatedly shown me how a genuine desire to help others paired with a foundation of honesty and the commitment to grind produce serve as the necessary components to produce an environment of sustainable success.
His ability to capture complex dynamics with simple day-to-day language is a breath of fresh air in both academia and corporate channels of communication.
