Book Four in the A Wizard's Touch series

It only takes one event to change the world.

Elijah Trenton had always been considered a weak wizard. With little magic and an overpowering father he’d expected to spend his life teaching. When an accident reveals his ability to talk to the dead, new possibilities open up.

Devin Stewartson had been eyeing Elijah for months. The shy redhead drew his eye from that first day, and only the thought of a relationship had him shying away. When Elijah saves Devin’s life, Devin decides that some things are worth a chance.

Old enemies and new adversaries try to tear the two men apart, but love can withstand most anything and even death can’t part two men fated to be together.

Amber Kell has made a career out of daydreaming. It has been a lifelong habit she practices diligently as shown by her complete lack of focus on anything not related to her fantasy world building.

When she told her husband what she wanted to do with her life he told her to go have fun.

During those seconds she isn't writing she remembers she has children who humor her with games of 'what if' and let her drag them to foreign lands to gather inspiration. Her youngest confided in her that he wants to write because he longs for a website and an author name—two things apparently necessary to be a proper writer.

Despite her husband's insistence she doesn't drink enough to be a true literary genius she continues to spin stories of people falling happily in love and staying that way.

She is thwarted during the day by a traffic jam of cats on the stairway and a puppy who insists on walks, but she bravely perseveres..

She also writes under the name Mikela Q. Chase

Now that I’m back in this series, with its various werewolves, wizards, and other supernatural and magical creatures, I am thoroughly enjoying the surprises Amber Kell has ready at every turn. In this fourth volume she deals with the “art” of necromancy, and the way she did it was a little unusual. Elijah’s ability to see ghosts is different from the way most people, even other necromancers. Perceive them, and that leads to a few surprises. Devin is the second of the three triplets who turns his attention to a relationship of a more permanent kind, and he definitely has his hands full trying to understand and come close to Elijah. There are some evil plans afoot, lots of new magic to delve into, and the combination definitely had me turning the pages.

Elijah, or Eli as he prefers to be called, has not had an easy childhood. Ignored, if not despised, by his father, taunted by his more talented brother, all Eli wants is a degree and some sort of job so he can get away from his awful relatives. He is more shocked than anyone when he discovers he can see ghosts, and the way it happened was imaginative and a great scene. From then on, Eli faces surprise after surprise, has to deal with his father’s sudden interest, and makes some powerful enemies. Necromancy is a rare enough magical ability in this world that everyone suddenly wants a piece of Eli, but all Eli wants is to be left alone – and to steal another kiss from Devin.

Devin has been interested in Eli all along, but when the shy wizard’s rare talent surfaces, Devin is determined to protect him – among other things. He wants to take things slow, can’t believe he feels ready for a permanent relationship, and makes a few mistakes along the way. His idea of protecting Eli turns out to be more difficult than he expected, but determination and his brothers’ support go a long way in helping Devin deal when things turn sour.

If you like stories about wizards who think of themselves as weak, then discover they have a very sought-after talent, if you enjoy reading about men who need to figure out how to relate in the face of danger and those who want to keep them apart, and if you're looking for an entertaining read with lots of supernatural surprises and some pretty hot wizard-on-wizard action, then you will probably like this novella.

Best so far

3.75 ⭐️
I personally found this one to best the best so far. I really liked Eli and Porter is now one of my favourite characters. I liked Devlin but struggled a little bit with him holding back.
I’m now looking forward to Porter’s book

*****For full disclosure, I was given this book for review by the publisher for an honest review.****

I had only read one other book by Amber Kell, Attracting Anthony. At the time, I was not that impressed with the novel, but there was something about the author’s writing that made me want to try another book.

When I came across this synopsis, it struck me as interesting, after all, who doesn’t love a story about an under-dog who finds out he is special? In the end, I was glad I read the book.

Basic Plot:

Elijah Trention is one disappointment to most people in his life: father, brother, and instructors. Then comes the day when he saves a class from danger and everyone looks at him in awe. Devin Stewartson has had his eye on Elijah for a long time, but never had the nerve to ask him out. When he finally does, will Elijah accept his friendship or will his past keep him away?

Elijah Trention:

Eli’s perspective is someone with whom we can relate. He has low self-esteem, mostly because of his father’s lack of love and respect. He is not an overachiever like his brother, in fact, he is behind in much of his studies, never even matching his peers. We discover more reasoning behind this later on, but I do not want to spoil the suspense here.

His father eyed Eli, approval in his gold gaze. After years of seeking his dad’s attention, he now wished the man would just go away. He certainly had no desire to supplant his brother’s spot in his father’s affections. Those two deserved each other. Power seeking and ruthless, the two men had the same goals in life — taking whatever they could get and stepping on as many people as necessary to get there. Eli wanted nothing to do with them.

Now that Eli has all of this great power, he must learn how to control it and keep friends around him that will support him, not use him.

Devin Stewartson:

Devin is a character that I assume is in the other three books of the A Wizard’s Touch series. Early on we see Elijah’s view of Devin:

Besides, there was a perk to the class, in the form of Devin Stewartson. The sexy man sat two rows ahead of Eli and to the right. Eli spent a great deal of time ignoring the professor and staring at the gorgeous triplet. It just wasn’t fair that there were three of them. He’d heard around campus that Dan had bonded with a fire wizard and Dean was straight — that left Devin a his only option. Not that it mattered — he’d always been attracted to Devin more than his brothers. Devin’s upbeat personality pulled at Eli. Maybe because Eli didn’t have a bubbly personality, Devin’s charm called him.

I liked Devin, while he appeared to be popular and had a steady family, even he had questions about getting a partner and a successful relationship.

Strong Points:

I enjoyed the dialogue in this book. It’s a short novel, at 115 pages, so the author needs to be able to get us into the story quickly. Early on we see how great Porter and Eli’s friendship is:

Porter put a hand on each of Eli’s shoulders and looked him square in the eyes. “You’ll be fine. If anyone messes with you, you call upon your legion of dead.”

Eli laughed, “So far my legion consists of a single dead assistant teacher who I don’t think is going to do anything other than help me with my studies.”

“Well, legions should be functional,” Porter said in a practical tone. “Maybe you can build them up as soon as you can figure out which ones are dead.”

Porter is a great secondary character and I wished we had more time with him.

What Could be Better:

Because this is such a short book, there is very little time for getting in-depth character development. This is book 4 in a series, so I an only assume that at least with Devin, we might have already learned about him as a secondary character.

Remember the phrase, “show” don’t “tell”, when dealing with writing? Because this book is so short, the author compressed the development to “tell” rather than “show”. From the writing that we see, I believe that the author has the writing skill to be more verbose. I hope that in other series we get to see more developed world, plots, and characters. I can tell by the writing of this story that Amber Kell is capable of writing a more lengthy novel. I would love to read a longer book Amber Kell.

Conclusion:

Overall, I enjoyed this book. It was a very fast read and was great for reading on my flight to a conference. But, that being said, there was not that much deep thinking. So I give it Three Stars for a score. I did like this book enough that I will go back and read the previous three in the series.

I enjoyed reading another one in 'A Wizard's Touch' series but this one had a few twists and turns I hadn't expected. I don't want to say too much in case I give them away but I will add that I loved Reaper and hope to see him mentioned in future books. He might even replace Gideon as my favourite character in the series now.

Better than book 3!
Though a nitpick: The title makes it seem like Elijah's lover/mate/partner is a ghost. He's not. Weird choice for a title. Actually, if you change the name in the title, would fix better with book 5, not this one. "Devin's Necromancer" would make more sense.

juvenile but nice

I like the series. They are sweet and I like to follow the group of people through the series. They do feel a bit like, not kids books, but very young, soon to be adult-books with a bit of sex thrown in. There is not much of a build up or background story, and I feel like I’ve almost missed part of the book. Conversations that should have happened and certain milestones in the relationships that never comes. But with that said, I still like the books. They are sweet and funny, and they have a bit of a thrill to them.

I liked Elijah, he was an nice variation from the typical necromancer. But the story was really short, so there wasn't quite enough depth and world-building.

I recommend reading the previous books for background.

Wizard classes were proving to be a challenge for Elijah Trenton; however with the help of some friendly ghosts and his new wizard boyfriend Devin Stewartson, Eli discovered how potent his magic could be.

Elijah’s Ghost is the fourth book in the A Wizard's Touch series. As the younger son of a powerful wizard, Eli was tolerated by his family, but never received any love or interest from his father or older brother. Eli’s powers, which proved to be a rare form of magic, did not manifest until he went to wizard school. When Eli’s magic is revealed, everyone is in awe, including his pretentious father.

Devin, on the other hand, is fascinated by Eli’s shy appealing personality. Devin is one of the wizard triplets who are friends with the powerful wizard Jaynell Marley of Jaynell's Wolf. Although Devin is attracted to Eli, he is not sure if he wants a long term relationship with Eli. Devin’s attitude changes once he realizes there is an undeniable bond between them.

Amber Kell has created another exciting installment in this series. I thoroughly enjoyed Elijah’s Ghost.

Reader Advisory: This book is best read in sequence

There was one time skip that was a bit weird and annoyed me and again the writing was basic and superficial, but I still liked this one. I generally like necromancy and doggos and some action.
It was unsatisfying that with the time skip we didn't get more of Dev's dreams (also the build up of their relationship) and they never get explored more. I was also a bit grumpy about the introduction of

I have to mention again that the books in this series are very superficial and the endings are rather abrupt and without an epilogue or anything concluding. Some aspects are never fully explained or explored. It is a bit annoying but if you go into it knowing what to expect the books can be quite fun.

Elijah's Ghost

I love Eli and Devin. Eli is one of the strongest necromancer around. He has a bell hound as a avatar. Devin is starting to what happens in the future. Poor Porter we know he is a ghost with a sword that can sends souls to the underworld. To save Devin's life he told Hades he would stay their but Hades has him become part of his Reaper Corp to send dark souls back to the underworld. Can not wait for the next book in this series. Erin

Oh god. Here I was thinking, “Porter’s a really cool guy” and then… That. It figures. XD

The basic plot is really a combination of the first two books (super powerful mixed with undervalued) but since I liked those I am not complaining.

The romance side here may not be the most powerful thing, but that’s frequently the case with this author. I simply enjoyed the fast-paced story with its delicious twists or semi-twists. (It does not have to be obscure to be fun.)

So yeah. Happy readings.

I liked it, but it's a bit too much of superlatives at times. Everything that Elijah does seems to be 'Wow... it's been centuries since something like it happened!" All the way even to meeting Hades, the Lord of Underworld himself.

Still, I was happy to read about Jay again.

This is the fourth entry in Amber Kell's fantastic series "A Wizard's Touch. This fascinating tale gives new meaning to the phrase" appearances can be deceiving", and with Hades, hellhounds, necromancers, and ghosts, this book is a great read.

2.75 stars The other stories in this series were better written to me. I wanted more back story into the MC's and some of the story really didn't make sense to me. Amber Kell is usually my go to girl for a good quick read but this one did not me the cut.
