I feel like I can count this as my first Christmas book ahead of the holiday season. There’s ice skating, Christmas baking, a Christmas ball, and kissing boughs. While it serves more of a backdrop to a heiress hiding in a Duke’s household as a governess to unruly wards - I’m still counting it.
Temperance is unfairly known as the Mad Heiress due to her love for learning and conducting electricity experiments. All she needs though is to make it to Christmas Day to come into her majority and inheritance. An advertisement leads her to finding refuge in Octavius’ household as a governess. I felt for Temperance and understood why she had a hard time trusting others.
Octavius enjoys his hedonistic lifestyle but recently noticed his habits wearing off on heir and ward. Then he’s up for consideration by the Prime Minister for the President of the Board of Trade, if he can rid his house of scandal. Plus with the addition of the new governess, Octavius starts abstaining from pleasure. I really enjoyed how after this started, he also started opening himself up to emotions that led to his joy of watching others experiencing pleasure. As well as, finally confronting trauma from his childhood.
The stakes were high for Temperance and I didn’t want to put this book down. Wanting to see if or how Temperance would succeed. The children get a lot of page time and I found them endearing and essential to the story and character arcs.
I only felt there should’ve been some groveling from the hero.
Overall, it was an enjoyable story and was left intrigued with what is in store next.
Duke of Eccess is the fifth book in the Seven Dukes of Sins series.
There are two open door encounters plus an additional scene in a bonus epilogue available in a newsletter signup. There are also mentions of a room of sin and restraint that are unfortunately unrealized on page.

Mariah Stone is a new author for me and this is only my 10th book by her. I read her Dukes and Secrets series and couldn't put them down. I don't read book descriptions anymore so I have no idea what I'm reading when I start a book. Makes for a more interesting read, I think. :) I added book 2 in this series to my favorite books read list for Jan, 2025 and book 3 to my favorite books read for Feb, 2025.
I really liked this book. I liked Temperance and Octavius. I liked the storyline. I felt they were a good match. I liked the suspense of it in regards to her family. I hate that women in those days were considered "mad" or "crazy" because they had a freakin' brain. So ridiculous. It just makes me realize men where afraid for women to be smarter than them. :) I don't usually like MC to have "wards" but I did enjoy Temperance and their interactions. Overall a really good read.

False identity is either a hit or a huge miss for me. But Mariah Stone knocked this one out of the park (sorry I’ve been watching lots of baseball lately).
This well written historical romance follows Temperance, a heiress who is running from her stepmother after her father passes away, and Octavius, the Duke of Eccess. These two characters had significant growth through the book. And while yes, there was a slight love triangle, I felt that it was handled extremely well and plays into the next book beautifully.
I honestly had a hard time putting this one down because it sucked me into the story and these characters’ lives. I look forward to continuing this series and seeing what Mariah has in store next!

We have Lady Agatha Temperance Hale an heiress and lady with a wicked stepmother! Temperance loves all things electrical experiments in a space her late father created for her! Her late father also left her a substantial amount that she claim on her birthday which is Christmas Day!
Her wicked stepmother Lady Auster has planned for her to marry her cousin or be put into an asylum!
She had found a place of respite but her stepmother’s thugs have found her and she runs again!
Temperance has met Octavius before but she only realizes it when she runs to his home and sees the 6th governess leaving and applies for the position!
Octavius the Duke of Excess is desperate so he gives her a few days to prove herself! He must have himself and his wards under control before an important meeting to determine if he will become the President of the Board of Trade!
He has lived his life in excess of food, drink and women! Can he change for the position alone or to become the role model his wards desperately need!
Temperance makes life changes in the ward and in Octavius. These two fall in love and Octavius shares his deepest fears and some tragic memories! Temperance shared a few but none to the extent of his!
She is looking forward to Christmas Day and her independence! Several times Octavius all but begs her to share her secrets knowing the Duke of Enveigh, Archibald recognizes her and knows her secrets! He even invokes the credo to Octavius to stand down!
The road to a HEA never does run smooth but when Temperance biggest fear is realized she runs again! Will she choose love or fear!?? Bravo well done!

Definitely my favourite in the series so far.
I’m very lucky at the moment, because books that I’m reading are turning out to be great entertainment, and Duke of Eccess keeps up with them.
That was a great story of deception, hidden identity and nice romance.

A count down to Christmas. I’m a huge fan of the deadly sins and was so excited when the next instalment for the Duke of Sins landed on my kindle. I love the way this series weeps you into a historical time.
The heiress is on the run and a countdown to Christmas is end game. She needs to stay in hiding until she comes of age so her can escape her stepmother.
The Duke of Eccess is looking for someone to take care of the children who have ended up in his care. Ms Fields, our secret heiress applies for the job and the Duke gains more than a teacher for the children.
I really enjoyed this book and love the warming atmosphere. The world building really sucks you in and this couple have all the feels.

The fourth book in the series & whilst it could be read on its own the series is brilliant & the seven Dukes are such interesting characters. I loved Octavius & Temperance both had loads of baggage & I loved how they fell for each other but whilst he eventually began to reveal his past she couldn’t bring herself to do so. There’s also Octavius’ three wards who had seen off lots of governesses but Temperance’s calm demeanour gradually won them over, all three were a joy but James won my heart. A very well written romance which drew me in from the start & I just loved it & the surprise at the end added to the enjoyment

This series gets better and better. Not gonna lie, from the other books, Eccess wasn’t my favorite. I didn’t love him but now I do. What a troubled man (typical) who got his ish together because a woman came into it (also typical). I did want to punch him at one point but he fixed it. He could fight for me any day 😏
But what I think I liked most about this book was its leasing us to Enveigh who has set himself up to be the villain and I’m here for it. I need a good villain in my fictional life right now.

what a fantastic read. this one was a thrilling twist and turns over and over. just when you thought it was going to happen big it slowed down and it was back and forth with the drama. I loved it.

Each book in the series just gets better and better! I love the heroine's intelligence, strength and resourcefulness and the hero's unrealized depth of character. Their chemistry is electrifying and the children in the story adds to the poignancy of loss. Love it when love triumphs!.

All of that needs to change when he acquires his cousin's three children as his wards and wants a position with the government. You can imagine how three children can get into trouble.Tempest is in hiding until her twenty-first birthday. What better way to hide than as a governess in a duke's home. With patience, love and fear of discovery, Tempest changes four lives including her own. With an overlap of characters from the previous books, I would suggest reading the series in order. Very interesting dukes and ladies who become their wives. A little violence and explicit sex.

I've been waiting for Duke of Eccess for what feels like forever, because I adore this Seven Dukes of Sin series and I knew Octavius' story would rip my heart out and stitch it back better. And wow it delivered. Temperance is simultaneously exactly what Octavius needs and everything that could complicate his world. Her secret identity, her scientific curiosity, her bravery, all of it makes the "mad heiress" label feel like just the tip of the iceberg. And Octavius… I fell for him hard this time. His excesses, his scars, his guilt, and his gradual softening with Temperance and his wards, every moment was powerful.
I was glued to this book from Temperance running from her past through to all of the moments Octavius feels like he might lose her, or worse, lose himself. There are gorgeous scenes, emotional confessions, playful bonding with the children, plus that tension of "can I trust you when so much is at stake." The romance is there, but also layered: it's about healing, forgiveness, and whether two very broken people can build something real together.

I loved this book it’s a little bit different from the usual governess/nanny trope and all the better for it, The FMC/governess is an heiress in hiding, a bit of a blue stocking and turns from innocent young Miss into a saucy temptress. Quite spicy.
The MMC is a bit of a troubled lost soul, trying his best but after all he’s just a man some what lacking in emotional intelligence though with a good heart.
There are twists and turns and as always Mariah’s characters are extremely well drawn and believable. I really enjoyed the inclusion of the three children as wards of the Duke of Eccess.
This is the fourth in the Seven Dukes of Sin Series. I have thoroughly enjoyed each of the three previous books and am impatiently looking forward to the rest of the series.

Another great period drama showing the struggle women had to be taken seriously and survive
One wonders how many women were forced into asylums for made up reasons all so others could get money it seems like they would go to any length to do so maybe Mrs Bennett in P&P was right to be concerned re her daughters marrying
This tale around the seven Dukes series is great shows how some men encouraged and supported their wives in their ventures

Mariah Stone never disappoints with her books..
Temperance and Octavius are characters that you instantly just want to jump through the book and give them the love that they both deserve..
Temperance is being betrayed by her own stepmother the one person who should have protected her after her father passed away instead of trying to have her put away.. Octavius's mother left him when he was a child and his own father made him feel worthless..
Octavius and Temperance are two different people despite that one common thing.. However one thing is certain they feel passionate about each other and 3 beautiful children.. and they will do anything for those 3 children..
This story is filled with love, tragedy, humor,heartbreak, angst and holiday season romance..
I can't wait to see what is in store next for this series...

After being featured heavily in the previous book of the Seven Dukes of Sin series, it is now Octavius’s time to shine. However, the human embodiment of gluttony has had his wings clipped, metaphorically speaking, fairly early on in the story, and we find ourselves essentially becoming acquainted with a new version of him. This version may not be as entertaining as the previous incarnation, but that hardly means he’s less lovable. While his traumatic past brings a dark shadow to a character who’s previously only been used for levity, his struggling relationship with wards Margaret, James and Sophie, as well as his tenuous romance with Temperance, make him both sympathetic and relatable.
In regards to Temperance, your heart can’t help but go out to her- not only has she lost a beloved father, but she was betrayed by the very people who should have had her back from the start (at least in the case of her stepmother), and in the most insidious of ways- by either forcing her into a loveless (and undeniably abusive) marriage, or committing her to a madhouse, from which she would never escape, all to gain control of her money. Temperance’s fascination with electrical experiments may have been her stepmother’s excuse for wanting to have her committed, but it’s fairly obvious that the vile woman would have come up with *any* excuse to declare Temperance incompetent. This story gave me secondhand anxiety, as I worried for Temperance every time she left the safety of the house or had to attend a gathering with other guests (as it turned out, my anxiety was well-placed).
Her first (literal) run-in with Octavius saw her at her lowest- scared, desperate, and alone- and him at this worst- drunk, dismissive and disrespectful. Yet the attraction was there from the beginning, and never really wavered. In fact, in a very risqué move for a woman of that time period, Temperance was the seducer for a good portion of the story (once Octavius awakened her senses to all of the pleasures- food and otherwise- she’d previously denied herself). It isn’t often we see women take charge like that in a romance, which made for a nice change of pace (especially as it meant that someone as prone to excess as Constantine had to suddenly temper his *own* desires in an effort to keep her virtue intact). Their resulting affair was both believable and *very* passionate, and definitely had my stomach doing flips.
As much as I loved this story (I didn’t even touch on the well fleshed-out storyline with the children), there were parts that rankled me. Despite being so desperate for her freedom (to the point where she turned down a proposal from the Duke of Enveigh, who knew her true identity and was willing to hide her away until she came of age to claim her money), Temperance was unwilling to accept *anyone’s* help, even when it was freely offered by several people, to the point where she almost surrendered to the idea of being sent to the madhouse because she couldn’t succeed at obtaining her birth rite on her own. I wanted to shake her by the end because she was just *so* stuck in this way of thinking that she would have essentially been the agent of her *own* demise. (Thankfully, the realization that she was no longer alone struck her just before that could happen.)
Octavius wasn’t safe from my scrutiny, either, however- as was the case of the previous dukes in the series, he was constantly haunted by memories of his horrible father and the mother who abandoned him, and so it was constantly touched upon, along with his fear that he’d never be enough (ironically by being too much) for someone to want to stay with him. There was also an occasional mention of a carriage accident that haunted him, but it was never explained- perhaps it will be in the Duke of Enveigh’s story, along with Octavius’s sister who was frequently mentioned but never by name- until Archibald himself succeeded in finding her, something Octavius was never able to do. Archibald’s motives for doing this are undoubtedly for the wrong reasons, as he clearly seeks vengeance for Octavius breaking the fourth credo and claiming Temperance as his own, but we’ll just have to wait and see how that all pans out. I understand the need to connect the stories, but I do wish this one had more of well-rounded ending, rather than subjecting us to so many loose strings that we’ll have to wait heaven knows how long for.
Yet wait I shall, as Mariah Stone has crafted an intriguing overall concept with wonderful (and frustratingly human) characters that keep me coming back for more.

It isn’t often we see women take charge like that in a romance, which made for a nice change of pace (especially as it meant that someone as prone to excess as Constantine had to suddenly temper his *own* desires in an effort to keep her virtue intact). Their resulting affair was both believable and *very* passionate, and definitely had my stomach doing flips.
As much as I loved this story (I didn’t even touch on the well fleshed-out storyline with the children), there were parts that rankled me. Despite being so desperate for her freedom (to the point where she turned down a proposal from the Duke of Enveigh, who knew her true identity and was willing to hide her away until she came of age to claim her money), Temperance was unwilling to accept *anyone’s* help, even when it was freely offered by several people, to the point where she almost surrendered to the idea of being sent to the madhouse because she couldn’t succeed at obtaining her birth rite on her own. I wanted to shake her by the end because she was just *so* stuck in this way of thinking that she would have essentially been the agent of her *own* demise. (Thankfully, the realization that she was no longer alone struck her just before that could happen.)
Octavius wasn’t safe from my scrutiny, either, however- as was the case of the previous dukes in the series, he was constantly haunted by memories of his horrible father and the mother who abandoned him, and so it was constantly touched upon, along with his fear that he’d never be enough (ironically by being too much) for someone to want to stay with him. There was also an occasional mention of a carriage accident that haunted him, but it was never explained- perhaps it will be in the Duke of Enveigh’s story, along with Octavius’s sister who was frequently mentioned but never by name- until Archibald himself succeeded in finding her, something Octavius was never able to do. Archibald’s motives for doing this are undoubtedly for the wrong reasons, as he clearly seeks vengeance for Octavius breaking the fourth credo and claiming Temperance as his own, but we’ll just have to wait and see how that all pans out. I understand the need to connect the stories, but I do wish this one had more of well-rounded ending, rather than subjecting us to so many loose strings that we’ll have to wait heaven knows how long for.
Yet wait I shall, as Mariah Stone has crafted an intriguing overall concept with wonderful (and frustratingly human) characters that keep me coming back for more.

This is book 4 of the series and features the story of Octavius, the duke of Eccess. He revels in pleasure and overindulgence and in the previous books it has lead to him appearing sloppy and unreliable.
This story gives his backstory and redemption, showing the vulnerable, flawed man-boy behind the drunken, gluttonous facade. In this story, we discover much about Octavius and his family history - and it is dramatic and traumatizing leaving him deeply emotionally scarred. Hence his indulgences in food, sex, and booze - to obliterate the memories, and temporarily fill the voids in his life and soul with passing pleasures.
But his life has changed and he has become the guardian and only remaining family of three young, vulnerable orphans. Because of his fears and feelings of inadequacy, he avoids them, leaving their care to a series of governesses, and this leads to a cycle of them acting out in the face of their own losses and unmet needs - routing 6 governesses since their arrival in the Eccess household.
Lady Agatha Temperance Hale lost her own beloved father a couple of years prior, and has been put under the guardianship of her stepmother. But she has been labeled mad for her unnatural love of science and study of electricity, which was formerly encouraged by her loving father. Her mother seeks to control her inheritance and marry off Temperance to her own nephew, but Temperance runs away to avoid this until she gains her majority and can gain control of her own inheritance. She is forced into hiding when her stepmother makes public her supposed madness and the search for her, labeling her the Mad Heiress. Events prevail, including a dramatic meet-cute, leading her to hide under the persona of Miss Temperance Fields, newly hired governess for the wards of Eccess. A hidden identity, forced proximity romance with plenty of steam. Much is learned about Eccess and his childhood, leading to his current indulgences, and how they contrast with Temperance's childhood. He is in pursuit of a high profile government position, and seeks her help for the same, in managing the children, as well as aiding him in forgoing some of his former pleasures, and grows to trust her with some of his deepest secrets and fears. In the meantime, Temperance grows to love the children and Octavius, but is afraid to trust anyone with her own secrets, and fear of being exposed. This story also tests the credo of the Dukes, and appears to cause permanent breaks in the bonds of their stalwart brotherhood.
Sweet, steamy, and emotional, with some Christmas sentimentality.

Lady Agatha Temperance Hale is on the run from her stepmother as the woman wants to marry her off to her nephew or put Temperance into an asylum. So she went to her father’s solicitor for help and is in hiding being known as Miss Fletcher. So Temperance acts as Mrs. Barton’s companion while she hides and then a week later, a stranger comes with inquiries. Since Temperance is an Heiress and doesn’t want to marry her stepmother’s cruel Lord Langston, or go to bedlam, she runs again. But, it is night and she is a Lady alone on the streets. It has been 18 months since her beloved papa passed, she just has to turn 21 on Christmas Day, to get her inheritance and no longer be under Lady Auster control. Temperance loves science and electrical liquid and experiments which Lady Auster hates. Temperance is almost run over by horses, when a horse unseats its rider, who happens to be a nobleman. Temperance runs to the almshouse in Whitechapel that is run by Miss Grace Lockhart. But, she knows that other women need it more, so she is looking for a job/ place to hide.
Octavius, The Duke of Eccess, has taken in his cousin’s three children as his wards: Margaret (14), James (12), and Sophie (8). The children are too smart for their own good and the way the governesses that he hired worked with them, ended up with the women quitting and running. (lol, you’ll see). As one of the Seven Dukes of Sin, Octavius meets with the others- Sylvester, Duke of Irevrence; Archibald, Duke of Enveigh; Constantine, The Duke of Pryde; Lucien, The Duke of Luhst; Dorian, The Duke of Rath; & Roderick, the Duke of Fortyne. With the Dukes of Rath, Luhst & Pryde having married already.
Octavius has gone thru so much in his life that caused him to be the way he is, it is all understandable and heart wrenching. I cried. I laughed. I loved this book. In an advertisement she sees that a Duke is in need of a governess. So she goes and finds out that one had just quit and that it is the man she almost gone run over by. (I loved that meeting by the way- soooo entertaining). Margaret, James & Sophie need to learn and have fun and the way Temperance handle them is awesome. How they change in just a few short weeks is amazing. Temperance tells him of her life, in general, mostly not lies, and when the other Dukes comes (with those that have wives & children, coming as well), She realizes that she knows Archibald. She is terrified that he remembers her. I loved how Archibald handles the situation, but this causes problems later with Octavius. A lot of problems. The book was fun, hilarious, sweet, romantic, crazy with mischief and mayhem, steamy, heartbreaking, heartwarming, inspirational, and a bunch of other things. It was an epic emotional roller coaster ride. I can’t wait to see what happens next and it hurt me to see two of the Dukes so at odds with each other.

Eighteen months ago, Lady Agatha Temperance Hale’s father died leaving her a healthy inheritance. Agatha’s father had fostered her interest in science, specifically electricity, which her stepmother, Lady Auster, believed to be unnatural and unladylike. She declared that her stepdaughter was a danger to herself and others and threatened to have Agatha sent to an asylum. In order to maintain her current lifestyle, Lady Auster needed to access Agatha’s inheritance, thus insisting that Agatha marry her nephew Lord Bartholomew Langston, a cruel and despicable man. As Agatha was only a weeks away from turning twenty-one and reaching her majority, which ended Lady Auster’s guardianship, all she had to do was hide until then. Unfortunately, her stepmother found an unethical doctor who drew up papers stating that Agatha was indeed dangerous and needed to be committed, then publicly dubbed her the “Mad Heiress” and offered a reward for her capture. After being discovered while acting as a companion to the wife of a friend, Agatha barely escaped, later applying for a governess position with the Duke of Eccess, using the name Temperance Fields. Octavious Everard, the Duke of Eccess, had been entrusted with his cousin’s three children after they lost their parents in a fire. The three children, Margaret 14, James 12, and Sophie 8, were a handful and had gone through six governesses in one year. Temerpance was a good match for them and things quieted down. At the same time, Octavious was forced to curb is excessive ways as he was being considered for the position of President of the Board of Trade. His bid for that appointment required well behaved children and holding several social gatherings. Archibald, the Duke of Enveigh and one of the “Seven Dukes of Sin” recognized Temperance from her first Season and offered her is assistance…..and that’s when things got really complicated. The fear of being caught provides an undercurrent of angst which is only intensified by several narrow escapes. The children rally around their governess and there are multiple blissfully domestic moments. Of course Octavious and Temperance fall for each other, but Archibald and the truth she denies Octavious make things much more difficult. This story has lots of action, heartbreaking revelations, emotional ah-has, betrayal, vulnerability, steam and one delightful comeuppance. It is intense, creative, and masterfully told. This is an amazing series, with four down and three to go. I loved it!.

I have loved every book of Mariah Stone that I have read and this one has been added to the “loved” list. She always writes with depth and detail that draws me in right from the beginning. The plots are always so interesting and I don’t want to put the book down until I’ve reached the end. This particular series of the Seven Dukes of Sin has been a fantastic collection so far.
The Duke of Eccess, Octavius Everard enjoyed the finer pleasures in life; wonderful wine, the finest food and beautiful women and in generous quantities. He unexpectedly becomes the guardian of three young children when his cousin and his wife die in an accident. Eccess had an awful childhood so feels he doesn’t know how to be a proper guardian to these children who are going through a new governess almost every month. They are running wild in the household and no one can tame them.
Enter Miss Temperence Fields, who is actually Lady Agatha Hale. She is on the run from her stepmother, Lady Auster due to a choice she has been given. She just has to hide from her stepmother and her nephew for the next few weeks and then she will be of legal age and out of her stepmother’s control. Temperence turns up at the duke’s door and under her alias becomes the new governess.
Eccess notices a difference in the children’s behaviour shortly afterwards and has also noticed how attractive Miss Fields is physically and how she instinctively interacts with his wards who have quickly taken to her. She is smart and enjoys challenging the children who enjoy being challenged. Temperance is drawn to Eccess physically. Neither can stop thinking about the other. Both have issues and each could help the other overcome their problems if they can work together. But secrets have a way of coming out and possibly ending Eccess and Temperance’s future together before it starts.
I love the close relationship between all of the Dukes of Sin and the wives of three of them in these books. They are always there for each other like brothers. Although in this book there is a rift between Eccess and one of the other dukes that is not completely healed by the end of this book so I’m really looking forward to reading more about it in future books. The dukes feature strongly in all of these books as side characters. Each book can be read independently but for full clarity and enjoyment, reading the series from the beginning would be beneficial (and they are fantastic to read too).

Another great installment in the series that had me hooked from the start! The very well-written plot is once again highly emotional and brimming with angst, past dramas and traumas, anguish, a touch of suspense and danger, female empowerment and some steamy love scenes. The tropes are

As in previous books in the series, Octavius is a tortured lead who tries to repress his childhood trauma and feelings of emptiness and loss with his excessive lifestyle. Temperance is a strong heroine who was raised by her late father to live a life of moderation and purpose, but is declared mad because of her interest in electric fluid and her inheritance.
The two are lovable characters who have sizzling chemistry from the start, complement each other perfectly, and have a positive influence on each other.
I particularly enjoyed the scenes with Octavius' three wards and how the five slowly grew together as a family.
Lady Agatha Temperance Hale, known in society as "the Mad Heiress" because of her scientific interest in electric fluid, is on the run from her evil stepmother and her nephew, who want to force her to marry him or send her to an asylum. She only has to hold out for a few weeks until she turns twenty-one and becomes independent, giving her access to her inheritance. So she applies under a false name as a governess to the Duke of Eccess for his three lively wards, who have driven away all her predecessors in no time at all.
Octavius Everard, Duke of Eccess, lives his life in overindulgence to fill the void in his life, believing that too much is better than too little. However, when he applies for the position of President of the Board of Trade, he is forced to moderate his lifestyle and tame the unruly children of his late cousin. This is where "Miss Temperance Fields" comes in handy, as she is able to connect with the children and also seems to recognize his inner demons. She is the opposite of him and was raised to be measured and purposeful.
As they grow closer, Temperance still cannot confide in Octavius, because it is always the people closest to you who can hurt you the most, and Octavius does not want to lose another person...
Overall, a poignant romance with very likable protagonists, great character development, a touch of suspense and spice, that I am happy to recommend!

Oh, what a series this is proving to be. I have read all the books so far and can’t believe they just get better. Each one has such emotion, past along with the seven dukes always there for one another. Unfortunately, in this story two of the dukes will test that friendship and each will lose at the end. I was sorry to see that; I hope the next book will show how they end up and if they can remake their friendship. This is the story of Octavius the duke of Eccess. He had a horrible childhood, a very abusive father who caused his mother to flee with his sister, leaving him with the monster. Christmas is the hardest for him. He covers his hurt, sorrow and feeling of never being good enough, with overindulgence in everything he does. Racing, drinking, women all to stop his father's voice in his head, calling him the “piggy”. All due to him being a very large man, standing heads over most. Lady Agatha had a wonderful childhood even thru her mother died when she was young. Her father loved her and let her learn all that she wanted. He did not hold her back like most would be due to her being a girl. They would do experiments on electricity in his lab together. When he remarried, she thought she would finally get a mother, but her stepmother couldn’t stand her being different. Called her mad. When she finds out her stepmother plans to wed her to her evil nephew she runs. She needs to hide till Christmas when she will be granted her fathers, money and estates. She is almost run over by Octavius who is racing his friends at night, he is drunk, and she slaps him before running away. Later she finds he needs a governess and applies not knowing it is for the same man she slapped, a Duke! Oh, my what these two must overcome and learn before its almost too late. With the three children, Margaret, James and Sophie who are his wards now that his cousin and his wife died in a fire. All are super smart and in need of love and attention. He must change his way if he wants to prove his father wrong and get the Board of Trade appointment. Oh, my I could not put this book down. As Octavius and Temperance fall for the other will the secrets and lies and hidden fears be too much or will love win out? Run, grab your copy and get started. It is helpful to read the books in order, but each can be read as a stand along. I received an ARC from the author and wish to thank her. “Duke of Eccess” is book four in the deliciously sinful series penned by Mariah Stone, Seven Dukes of Sin. In this offering Octavius is the Duke subsisting on gluttony, and not just food. You name it, he indulged in it—food, booze, women, racing, recklessness, pleasures—until the day he nearly ran over Temperance with his horse in the dead of night. Octavius is such a well written character, he drives the book with his overindulgence then his struggles with sobriety and change. This man struggled with Christmastime, the result of a horrible father and a mother who deserted the family with his baby sister. I felt the jolt when Octavius met Temperance. Temperance was a lady and an heiress on the run from her greedy stepmother and a forced marriage or the alternative, Bedlam. I really like the women in this series and Temperance fits right in. She is intelligent and scientifically gifted with a love for experimenting with electricity. Unlike Octavius, Temperance had a great father whom she loved and who supported her scientific study and independent spirit. Temperance uses her upbringing as a guide when she is hired as a governess to Octavius’s three unruly wards. Biding her time until her birthday on Christmas Day, Temperance hides her identity, not knowing who to trust as well as believing she has to do everything on her own. There is high heat and passion between these two opposites. It is like a raw electrical charge pulling these two together, it gets stronger as the story develops. I liked the fact that Temperance went after what she wanted from Octavius. The world these characters live in is extremely well developed. The pacing of the story kept me interested and eager to see what was going to happen next. I enjoyed the scenes with the other sinful duke in the series, especially the married dukes with their scientifically minded wives. The unmarried Duke of Enviegh, Archibald, is a thorn in this story, at times his motives are suspect and questionable. It goes to show that even the best of friends have rough patches. This series is still going strong, I can’t wait for the next duke and the woman who completes him. Definitely recommended for lovers of historical romance, fans of Mariah Stone, and anyone who likes a good story with standout characters.

I enjoyed the scenes with the other sinful duke in the series, especially the married dukes with their scientifically minded wives. The unmarried Duke of Enviegh, Archibald, is a thorn in this story, at times his motives are suspect and questionable. It goes to show that even the best of friends have rough patches. This series is still going strong, I can’t wait for the next duke and the woman who completes him. Definitely recommended for lovers of historical romance, fans of Mariah Stone, and anyone who likes a good story with standout characters.

Mariah Stone’s The Seven Dukes of Sin series just keeps getting better, and the fourth installment, featuring Octavius Everard, the Duke of Excess, might be my favorite yet. Octavius isn’t your typical duke—he’s a man drowning his past sorrows in overindulgence, especially around Christmas, while struggling to manage his three rebellious wards and salvage his reputation.
Enter Lady Agatha Hale, Temperance, an heiress on the run from a manipulative stepmother determined to control her future. Dodging an unwanted marriage and the threat of an asylum, she takes a job as governess to Octavius’s wards, hoping to stay hidden until she can claim her independence on Christmas Day.
From their very first meeting, sparks fly. Octavius is captivated by Temperance’s sharp wit and strength, finding himself opening up in ways he never has before. Temperance, wary from past betrayals, keeps her true identity a secret, even as her feelings for Octavius deepen. But secrets have a way of surfacing, especially when the conniving Duke of Enveigh steps in, threatening everything.
One of the things I adore about this series is the bond between the Dukes of Sin. They’re not just allies—they’re like brothers. Seeing tension brew between Octavius and Enveigh was tough, and I’m anxious to see how it affects their friendship moving forward.
This story has it all—humor, heart, angst, and just the right dash of spice. Octavius is a beautifully flawed character with a tender heart hidden beneath his rakish exterior, and Temperance’s resilience and fierce independence make her the perfect match. Their chemistry is undeniable, and watching them challenge and heal each other is truly satisfying.
Will Octavius forgive Temperance’s deception? Can she embrace love without sacrificing her hard-won independence? I could go on, but honestly—you just need to read it and find out. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
With lingering tensions around the Duke of Enveigh, Stone leaves us hungry for more. While I have mixed feelings about Enveigh, I’m intrigued to see how his story unfolds. If Stone can make me root for Octavius, I’m sure she has more surprises in store. Bring on the next book!.

Goodness am I fictionally in love with Octavius, the Duke of Eccess! I want to protect that man with my last breath & defend him to the end.
I love when we get a character's backstory & it completely draws you in to the story. Octavius being so honest about his childhood trauma & how he is aware that it has led to his lifestyle just made me love him all the more. His vices attempting to drown out his fears & inadequacies made being in his POV at times very heartbreaking. How he ended up trusting Temperance so fully, had me wishing she could have trusted him in return.
Temperance was a character who I was amazed at how strong she had to be in order to survive. How she did not want to let go of her independence for anything. It was admirable. I did find it hard to connect with her character in a number of ways. I know why she couldn't trust after feeling betrayed by her stepmother but I wish she could have realised earlier that there were people who would do anything to protect her (& had been trying) if she could have given them the chance. And as someone who doesn't always love kids as essential to the plot, I truly loved Margaret, James & Sophie. Particularly James, how much he wanted to protect Temperance.
There was a lot of trust/mistrust within this novel as well as a friendship breaking attempt at a love triangle. I get why they were wielded within the story but there were points were I feel like it was taken too far. I know that friends are the ones who can hurt us the most, but in this case with these two friends there was a boundary truly crossed. I don't know how forgiveness can be forged after the events towards the end of the book.
I also will admit I missed listening to the audio for this author as I feel that the narrators do such a fantastic job of connecting the reader to the characters/story. Justine Eyre is one of my favourite narrators & Shane East has quickly become another favourite. I am hoping that they continue to be narrators for this series as they are phenomenal.

This was a really engaging story. I'm not usually one to love the governess trope but this one was very different, much more believable.
Octavius our hero and Duke is happy living his life of overindulgence and decadence but it's really a coping mechanism for him. He hides his trauma from his family history by living his life this way. No emotions, no closeness, no caring, just fun.
He now has 3 orphaned wards he is responsible for but he really has very little to do with them. He leaves them to the Governess but they have been acting out, unruly behaviour, and he has lost numerous Governesses due to them.
Its not their fault. They are acting out due to their own traumatic experiences.
Lady Agatha loves electricity and science. She isn't like the average Lady of the ton and her stepmother uses that to her advantage.
Lady Agatha lost her father and has been under her stepmothers guardianship. She is trying to control not only her but her inheritance and will go to any lengths to do so.
She has plans to marry Agatha to her nephew and has spread the rumours that Agatha is mad!
Agatha knows she needs to get away, just long enough to make it to her 21st Birthday when she finally is free of her stepmother. She leaves, creates a new identity, and has found herself the new Governess for the Duke of Eccess wards.
As Agatha's time in the home and with Octavius moves forwards, they naturally are drawn to one another, not just physically but emotionally. Their relationship evolves really nicely and naturally although they both have trauma and secrets to get past.
I really enjoyed the interesting plot. I thought the development of the characters and their relationships very believable. I enjoyed the depth of the characters, their back stories, and the emotions involved.

After her father’s passing, Lady Agatha is forced to flee from from her controlling step-mother after she forcefully arranges a marriage for Agatha to marry an abusive man - just so her step-mother can keep access to Agatha’s inheritance. As a way to hide, Agatha applies to be a governess, using her middle name of Temperance, to Octavius, the Duke of Eccess and his 3 wards. His wards are delightful characters who have lost both their parents tragically, but are written with sensitivity to their losses, with entertaining quirks which Temperance respects and quickly comes to care for.
The story flows as the relationships between Temperance, the kids and Octavius develop. However underlying it all is Temperance’s fear that she will be discovered, and hauled off against her will. Temperance’s dread and panic is really well written.
Complicating factors are that the proposed husband is a challenger to the Duke’s application for a position, her step-mother has men trying to locate her, one of Octavius’ closest friends discovers Temperance’s secret and wants to marry her for her inheritance but acts as if he wants to help her. Temperance is in a right pickle whichever way she turns.
Octavius also goes on a journey with Temperance in the house - he sees how she is with the kids and that makes him want to be closer to them. Which in turn leads to closer proximity between Octavius and Temperance and affection develops.
Temperance, and the children, are placed at risk by the men hired to capture her which generates more fear and guilt for Temperance. But can she be honest with Octavius?
Obviously there are turbulent twists and turns for Temperance and Octavius but they ultimately succeed in a HEA.
I really enjoy this author’s writing and her stories usually flow really well. This story flowed well at the beginning, lingers slowly in the middle but then picks up pace again in the latter half
