I really enjoy this series and I want to dive into what I enjoyed from this book first. I LOVED the setting, a magic castle that forms to the whims of a magical forest god with a cute pet who loves the other MC. Also gardening, chickens, picnics outside and a lake to swim in sounds like actual heaven. I also felt that the MCs had a lot of chemistry, even before they started to have some sexy times. I loved how they awkwardly spend time together, hesitant to make the first move, but flashing each other smiles and small touches. I also loved seeing Nikolai represent depression and anxiety, going to therapy and making an effort to fight through it.
However, there were a few things I didn’t enjoy about this book. I felt like once they did start having *fun* with each other, that became the main focus. It pulled away from Jule’s trauma and discovering his Herat, Nikolai and his mental health struggles, getting back on the ice and any domestic moments between the MCs that could have been really cute. Almost every chapter, every sweet moment or serious moment that I was immersed in immediately lead to that. I love spice, but I want it paired with tenderness as well; development to their relationship. It also bothered me that they didn’t talk about the mate bond, it just happened and Nikolai accepted it. Also all the nicknames and some of the lines started to grate on me a bit, but that could be because I started to get lost along the way. Overall I still think the rest of the books in the series are good, but this one just didn’t really do it for me.
