"The Damaged Souls trilogy is a triumph! Poignant, brutal, heartbreaking and yet sexy, joyful and playful." ~ Afrodyt, Guilty Pleasures
"This book was truly a joy to read. Their struggles were real, relatable and understandable. A job well done." -Readers' Favorites Book Review
Alexis Bolden has seen her fair share of tragedy and experienced enough abuse to last a lifetime. Witnessing the double murder-suicide of her parents and dealing with a string of abusive losers, Lexi often found comfort in the brutal ritual of 'cutting'. And now, narrowly escaping with her life after the last episode of abuse, Lexi finally finds the courage to press charges and start a new life.
Meanwhile, Sloan Stryker, a war veteran suffering from the physical and internal scars of war and bouts of PTSD, has found himself estranged from his disapproving parents, no job and homeless.
Through a chance meeting and dramatic rescue, an unusual friendship develops between these two wounded people. Can they work past their damaged souls to finally come together? Find out in Twyla Turner's new erotic romance, Scarred...accompanied by a sensual auditory journey.
I was born and raised in Joliet, IL. I wrote my first story in the 3rd grade and fell in love with creating my own world. But throughout the years I have lacked the discipline to actually sit down and write. Even with a minor in Creative Writing (which should have been my major). I have been a avid romance novel reader since Jr. High and have read hundreds. I have lived in Chicago, Japan, California and now reside in Arizona. And I wanted nothing more than to combine my love of romance, writing and traveling and put them in a book. So one day out of the blue while in the middle of reading another book, the story that I had started months ago kept bombarding my every thought. Until I couldn't even continue to read the book I was in the middle of. I put down my Nook and picked up my laptop and about fifteen days later, I had finished my first draft of my manuscript. It was the most exhilarating moment of my life. To know that I finally did it. That I finally finished something that I had started. And now I'm and AUTHOR and PUBLISHER! I never would have thought that was possible three months ago. I just hope that everyone that picks up any of the books I write from here on out, enjoy them as much as I did writing them.
I'm sorry but ANOTHER Black heroine with GREEN EYES???
REALLY???
Excuse me but is there something so wrong with a nice pair of brown eyes (sort of like there seems to be something wrong with dark skinned heroines) that any other shade, even when it's a rare genetic trait, is preferable?
I rate this one 6* Seriously! This was a very, just beyond hot, yet emotionally gripping tale of two wounded souls coming together while learning to live & co- exist among others in general. Just wow.
And Sloan? My GAWD! Dude had me feeling so many intense emotions. I don't know what to do with myself right now.
I have a gripe though. This one ends on a cliffy. At the end I was like... YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO ME, TWYLA!! WHY?!!!!!
Then when I realized I didn't even know when the next book was coming out, I immediately thought..
It's just not right. But I still can't wait to dive into book 2. I haven't checked yet, but I'm hoping I find that book 2 is already out *crosses fingers*
Yes, in case you haven't caught on yet, I HIGHLY recommend this read. Happy Reading :)
OMFG this book is so good! I love romances where two broken people find their way to one another and grow to love one another in the midst of healing. This story really pulls at your heartstrings. This is a sweet, romantic love. Can't wait for part 2! TW: rape and domestic abuse
This is more like a 2.5 for me, but I rounded up as I don't think it deserves a 2.
This book started out strong for me. I like the premise; battered woman who is trying to make a new life for herself, disenfranchised vet who has opted to be homeless and alone vs live a life that doesn't fit him any longer. I liked their meeting, and the way things clicked but stayed true to the heroine's state of mind.
Then, it kind of went off the rails with a few things I felt happened way too fast, and dialog that just did not ring true in any way. Like, to the point where it was constantly pulling me out of the moment. Its a bad sign when I'm repeating "People do not talk like this." over and over again. Most of it came from the hero, and I know it was intended as romantic wish fulfillment but that only works if it rings true. This didn't. All this "I want to bury myself deep within your lush body" shit is nonsense. If a man said that to me, I'd be too busy laughing in his face to get much further.
Oh, and yet another black but green eyed heroine. Writers, in the name of books, STOP MAKING GENETIC ANOMALES A COMMONPLACE CHARACTERISTIC! IT DOESN'T TAKE ALL THAT TO MAKE A HEROINE ATTRACTIVE!!!!
This is the love journey of Lexi and Sloan. Both have good reason to be scared of love. Both have been scarred by life. Will they find happiness in each other and safety or will they continue to be scared to reach out to each other. I totally enjoyed this installment looking forward to the next one to find out if they can trust each other and love each other. Without being scared to do so.
Alexis and Sloan are two broken souls, fate puts together, as a way to heal them both. Most of Alexis' damage is hidden at a glance. Sloan's face is marked forever with his ravages of war. This is the first, in a three book story arc. It mainly covers their pasts, and relationship set up. There is a bit of a cliffhanger, but knowing the series is complete, makes it easier to take.
This is well written, and both characters are equally interesting. Just the further I got into it, realized we were not a good romance book/reader match. Basically Sloan being homeless and destitute was a huge turnoff to me. He is sweet, strong, and sexy but her pocket book being constantly open kept blocking me.
But then again Gwen Guthrie was my patron saint at one point in my life. None of this takes away from this being a book worth reading. Especially for those of you leaning towards a financial equality mindset, or just burnt out on the wealthy hero trope in general.
Dislikes -Yet another green eyed, blushing black chick, I swear I'm getting a complex from seeing this mix in so many IR novels. -The insta-love, I mean for two damaged people, they leaped past hurdles quite quickly. Even though it was sensibly done, I found it to be unreasonable. -I didn't like how Dom was portrayed, when she was first introduced I thought the heroine was going to get a friend, but in the end it seems that she was just put in to create drama. -The cliffhanger, I mean far be it for me to tell the author how to do her craft, but really? Did this novel need to be split ? Not every book needs to have a part two, the Eric conflict and everything else could have been handled in one book. Likes -The writing itself was good, with only a few problems here and there, nothing to detract from the story. -I liked the fact that the MC were grown people and not in their 20s. -The cover! Wow, absolutely beautiful!
Even though there were some annoying bits, I'd recommend this book to romance readers, especially those that like IR.
Surprisingly good! Review also on: https://paperbackbookaddicts.wordpres... I've always been a fan of flawed characters, so Sloan (who's amazing) and Lexi were awesome treats. Their stories were wonderfully told and I can't wait to read the next book.
This was me most of the book Despite, or maybe because of, their pasts, this book was so darn sweet. Lexi's had more than her share of abuse and dark times. She finally decides to leave the current scumbag she's with after he's locked up for severely beating her. I loved that she was putting her fear aside to better herself and try to find happiness again. Sloan, his game was seriousssss. He had the cutest lines, but the best part was you knew he was so sincere in his treatment and kindness to Lexi. He had his own struggles and ended up homeless along the way. The world basically ignored him, until Lexi came along. This book was a slow burn, but anything else wouldn't have seemed genuine, especially on Lexi's part because she had a lot of issues to overcome to believe any man could be good to her. But when they got together. O.M.G. Not just the sex, but the level of intimacy that came with it. It was simply great. But of course, the ex is out of jail and popping up here and there in the book and you're just waiting for this a**hole to come back around. Ended on a scary note, so I'm moving on to book 2 now.
I love books about scarred heroes as much as anybody else but something about this book just didn't ring as authentic to me. We get a brief and rushed introduction to each the heroes and their sob stories and are quickly sent to the present where Alexis, a survivor of domestic violence and Sloan, a homeless war vet meet and instantly feel drawn to each other. Their first encounter in the park is followed by a few more brief moments until one day Sloan rescues Alexis from danger and she decides to take her home with her as a thank you.
NOW STOP RIGHT THERE!! You mean to tell me that this skittish and scared woman who can barely stand the touch of another human being is taking a complete stranger into her household, a man who she herself described as a fit giant with an intimidating scar...okay then...And this man does not feel even a bit wounded in his pride while being taken care of by a woman he barely knows?? I might be a terrible person for thinking this but I have little regard for a person, let alone a man who doesn't work for a living. Yep, I don't care if you do add jobs, work in a dingy bar or whatever but do something!! I don't expect you to be rich but have some dignity!! I really could not get past it all. To get back to the story, they protagonists share the same roof and as time goes by they get to know each other an open up. As I mentioned before, something about this story didn't ring true to me. Not only are some bits unrealistic but I couldn't bring myself to feel anything for the main characters let alone feel involved in their story. Something is definitely lacking with the author's writing IMO. It's not bad but it just didn't grab me or make me feel!!
This is my third book by this author and I have loved each one. She will now become one of my automatic clicks. She has a great writing style and I love how she tells a story.
This book will not be for everyone. There are scenes of domestic abuse and a rape scene so be warned!
This is Alexis and Sloan's story. Two broken people who find each other. They can see and feel the brokenness in the other person. Alexis through bad relationships involving domestic abuse and Sloan from losing his best friend through the trauma of war and being in the military for 9 years until he is released through injury.
I loved the story. I loved how Alexis reaches out to Sloan and then Sloan loves Alexis unconditionally. He is patient and loving towards her. Giving her time to relax and feel comfortable with him.
I did want to slap Alexis when she goes on a date with another man after Sloan gives her his heart and she then nearly rips it out of his chest with her ambivalence about him.
Sloan: "You know what? I'm sorry. Apparently I've asked too much of you. Go and enjoy your date... whatever."
Alexis ex-boyfriend is out there still trying to bring fear into Alexis' new start. He represents a real threat to the couple's future happiness.
I cannot wait for book 2 to see how their story concludes.
It took me a minute to finish this one. Here's the thing- I think the premise is great, but the execution was a bit meh. I loved the way the author respectfully and realistically covered heavy-hitter topics like domestic violence, intimate partner sexual violence, issues of civilian vs military PTSD, cutting, homelessness, and intergenerational violence. If I was rating her on that, I'd give 5 stars, but there was something about Lexie that I just did not like. I could not fully connect to her character although I empathized. Sloan's character was also multifaceted, but both characters went into weird romance novel stereotypes and it took away from the story. Also, I wanted the author to stop talking about her wide hips and green eyes every single chapter. We get it! Light-skin with a big ass and green eyes. Even more annoying to me were the descriptions of Lexie's outfits. Lord help me this chick owns some fugly, kill it with fire, level fashion monstrosities. Karl Lagerfeld wept! While this series had an ok start, I don't see myself finishing it. I've had enough Lexie for the moment.
This book was intense, emotional and cathartic. Ms. Turner was spot on with her writing. The metaphors and symbolism was great. I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed this book and so sad to see it end. Eric your azz is gon get it. Sloan what a man and my gurl Alexis is finding her way. Can't wait for the next one. Added Ms. Turner to my list of favorite authors.
4.5 stars. Loved the PTSD, emotional, issues from the moment you open this book, it had me at the edge wanting to know come on, guys, fall in love. Help each other recover what was lost in a battle and can be fix slowly. OMG, it was great. I got to have another book, Come on Book 2..
3.0 rating - I know I'm in the minority here but this was just okay for me. I love damaged heroines and wounded warrior heros do not exactly sure why this didn't rate higher for me. I was disappointed to know this is not a complete story, the story will be continued in another book. I wouldn't have read this book if I had known that and don't have plans to read the second book.
This is my first book by this author. I absolutely loved Sloan and Alexis! Their story is so heartfelt and beautiful! I gushed over how sweet and gentle Slaon is with Alexis. Not to mention that I love scars on a man; that and lean muscles. And to top it off, he's a Marine too. Le Sigh....on to Book 2.
I had this book on my to read list for a long time. It had some wonderful reviews and I finally got around to reading it, and I'm glad I did. Lexi and Sloan were two very damaged souls who fate brought together. An abused woman who, watched her father kill her mother and finds relief in cutting herself, finally finds the courage to leave her abusive boyfriend only to find love with a homeless Veteran suffering from PTSD, fabulous. This book was really good, perfect for a Saturday day afternoon, loved it.
This book was selected by a member of my book club this month. Women's romance is not something I would usually explore, and after reading this one, I can't say that has changed much. -- SPOILER ALERT! -- Overall: The story had good momentum (other than the 50 pages or so of flirtation and falling in love in the middle). It was a page-turner; I did want to find out what happens. CHARACTERS: Here's where some problems start. The main character, Lexi, is detailed well. We get to know her inner-workings. The male lead, however, is much more one-dimensional. He becomes little more than a walking erection; gorgeous despite his scar, perfect body, able to make love seven times in one day! There are very few other characters; the author conveniently kills off Lexi's parents; Sloan turned his back on his; and there don't seem to be any siblings or annoying friends. PLACE: The book takes place in Savannah, GA, but could have taken place just about anywhere. There are mentions of a river, park, farmer's market, etc., but that could be Anywhere, USA. More detail might have helped bring us into the environment. For example, Lexi buys a bike early in the story. Why not have her go for a ride around her neighborhood and tell the reader what she sees? The rest of the action takes place inside her house. The descriptions of the repairs are good. I liked the scene where Sloan and Lexi write the names of people who have hurt them on a wall to be demolished, then smash away. STRUCTURE: I thought this was the strongest part of the book. Things come together well at the end with a sweet moment accompanied by a sinister one. Also, the date that Lexi agrees to early on becomes a major plot point toward the end. LANGUAGE: Was the weakest aspect of the book, IMO. Not only was the text shot through with spelling errors, there were more serious errors like word usage. Sloan, for example, is said to be in the "Marine Corp." Is that a corporation run by the Marine Corps? Or, when Sloan learns, "...every detail and nuisance of her curvaceous body." Does the author mean "nuance?" Other word usage that I found problematic was the overuse of explanation, like this: "'Please Alexis, I promise I'll keep my hands to myself.' Sloan beseeched" Isn't it already clear from context that Sloan is beseeching? No need to knock us over the head, we get it. Oh, and usually periods don't appear inside of quotation marks if the sentence is continuing.
Anyway...this is a fun read. It's the start of a series, so maybe someday I'll circle back around to the next issue; they're available right now as free downloads on amazon Kindle.
Scarred (Damaged Souls, #1) Gritty and in your face with domestic violence issues and low self worth. The lead couple was a good pairing because it was so easy to imagine these characters (easy to imagine their interactions). Sloan is strong and solid male lead and Alexis is the perfect scared female lead. There are many good elements to this story but I just had a bit of trouble with the author's writing style. No matter what, the evolution of the scarred and scared heroine is communicated well. As well as the emotional scars that the hero carries.
Scarred is different than I expected it to be. I heard that it was a dark tale, and it had some possible triggers in there to say the least, but it's a love story of two damaged people who are trying to immerse themselves into the real world with the help of the other. I love Sloan and Alexis and their courage to fight for life despite their past situations and circumstances. The physical abuse that Alexis suffered and the mental abuse that Sloan experienced in his past were serious. Their brokenness is was sad, but palpable and I loved that. That brokenness only enhanced their budding love that they had to fight their inner demons for.
Their story paused on a beautiful yet frustrating note as it is a cliffhanger, but luckily I don't have to wait to read the next chapter of their lives. ;)
This book had my holding my breath a lot. I can't give anything away put there are a couple of parts that had me saying is that asshole coming I know he is. But back to Lexi and Sloan I love their courage and their love.
I'm out of sync with so many 5 star reviews. I'm disappointed because this book had the bones of a good story. Both leads are survivors - she from a series of abusive men, he's a scarred returned soldier. But too many exaggerated plot devices made the characters ridiculous. The h has been horribly abused by men, even requiring surgery from a rape. She's had therapy, finds out she is a fantastically talented painter, turns out a painting in an afternoon! She revels in the H's lovemaking, where he 'pounds' her, after a rape that results in surgery! Her new best friend doesn't listen to her, the H and h lie to each other, she lies to her friend, goes out with a om, lies to him too, her ex is stalking her and then - worse still, it's a cliffie! This writer has the talent to write a great romance, uses 'thick'to describe the h's thighs? Not romantic - just disappointing.
Good read and I hate cliffhangers. I thought this story was really old to read black heroine with green eyes. I've never read any book with a black woman with green eyes. Hazel eyes may have been a better fit for a black woman, but overall the story was good. Twyla I hope your future books do not list black woman with eyes that does not fit the black character.
I gave this 3 stars because I like the story- but I warn you that the actual writing isn't the best. It's very straightforward and kind of simple, but that's okay when you're not always looking for something over complicated. I'm going to read book 2 because I'm vested in the characters now.
