Wealth & Wisdom: Timeless Quotations and Comments About Money and Investing

Rate this book
“There has not been a concise, effective and well thought out book on investing and building wealth in quite some time. Wealth & Wisdom is that book. In a well-managed and unique structure, the reader not only receives a complete history of the time-tested, emotional platforms the market demands for success on the topic but at the same time, a process to de-mystify the art and science of investing.” —Michael W. Williams, Genesis Asset Management

This is a book for sensible people interested in wealth and appreciative of good quotations. There are no graphs, formulas, higher mathematics, or shortcuts; just common sense, for that is all you really need to wisely invest.

"Much more than a handy cheat sheet for the board room or the coffee table, these timeless maxims woven together will keep you healthy, wealthy... and witty." —François Picard, anchor, France24.

"Long before Twitter capped the maximum length of a tweet at 140 characters, wise people with pens and styluses were jotting down adages. 'Buy low, sell high,' one of their number said. The unnamed author of this aphorism did more than proffer the best and simplest item of investment advice ever recorded. He or she also wrote an 18-character guide for living. Between these covers is collected some of the best and wittiest of the world’s short-form financial wisdom. The ancients and the moderns take turns advising us when to buy, when to sell (if at all) and how to think." —from the Foreword by James Grant, author of Money of the Mind and Mr. Market Miscalculates and editor of Grant’s Interest Rate Observer

You could easily read this book cover to cover, or use it as reference when in need in specific quotes. Either way you're in for a wonderful read!! The quotes range from Lao Tzu, Voltaire, Mark Twain, to Thomas Jefferson. There is something for everyone.

Well written and researched. The author paid meticulous attention to detailing, as well as giving the book enough breathing space to grow.

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful read!!

I received Wealth & Wisdom as a Goodreads giveaway. I loved this book! It is a book that I will not pass on but keep on my coffee table. It is a treasure full of interesting quotes and information. I liked this quote "Any government, like any family, can for a year spend a little more than it earns. But you and I know that a continuance of that habit means the poorhouse - FranklinD. Roosevelt." I wish every politician in our country would receive this book!

It's all here. This comprehensive, robust, and thought-provoking collection leaves you with a solid overview of the issues, dangers, joys, and strategies of dealing fruitfully with your money. At the same time, the author does it tree by tree, gathering wisdom from the usual suspects as well as from scores of unusual ones. Each quote stands on its own, but the cumulative effect is a developing sense of relating to your money in healthy, productive, and respectful ways. A little unusual in a collection of quotations: first, the author intersperses sections and quotations with text of his own, tying together themes and adding some of his own relevant experience; second, he includes lots of women. Although women have always had much to say about money, investing, and financial wisdom, they have not very often been quoted on it. The book is made for targeted reading or for browsing. Its gift is perhaps that of getting the reader to think: is this, in fact,a good idea? how does it relate to me? does this make sense? By being obliged to think about this received wisdom, attentive readers end up with a clearer idea of their own values, attitudes, and philosophy about money.

Not a book per se, but a collection of quotes lightly interspersed with McAuliffe's commentary about investing. I'm not sure why he repeated some quotes in different sections, that seemed a bit lazy. Otherwise, worth a peek if interested.
